[MCN-L] A Quick Survey

2011-01-13 Thread Newman, Alan
Sam,

Since 95% of video is shot here by smartphones and small handheld cameras
the answer is yes we allow it in the permanent collection galleries.
Temporary exhibitions always come with their own set of permissions
requirements. As far as a using tripods or lights, that must be pre-arranged
with our Press Office and there are conservation and scheduling
requirements. I can send you those offline.

Best,
Alan

A couple quick questions:

Do you have a policy and if so, what is it?

Is your institution currently engaged in or planning a review of your
policy?

What do you think would be an appropriate policy now?

Many thanks for any feedback, anecdotal or otherwise.

Yes, that's the situation we're addressing. We have no intention of changing
our policy concerning shepherding professional crews with major equipment
around in the galleries... it's the explosion of personal use videos that
we're addressing.

Thanks to those how have already written (and those who might),

[MCN-L] A Quick Survey

2011-01-13 Thread Landsberg, Erik
Sam,
Our official policy for general visitors is:
?Still photography for personal use is permitted in collection galleries
only. No flash or tripods allowed. Videotaping is permitted in the lobby
only. No photographs or videotapes may be reproduced, distributed, or sold
without permission from the Museum.?

However, similar to what others are saying, due to the small size of
personal video cameras/phones/etc I doubt that the restriction on video in
the collection galleries is strictly enforced.

Here is an excerpt from our policy at the MIA. We treat still and video the
same.

*May I photograph in the MIA? *

Yes?with a few precautions to ensure the safety of visitors and artwork. If
it?s for personal use and without a tripod, feel free to use your still or
video camera. Please note: photography or filming of artworks that are on
loan to the museum requires prior permission.

*How do I know if an artwork is on loan? *

On the label, look for the words ?loan,? ?lent by,? ?private collection,? or
the name of a museum other than the MIA. Also, numbers assigned to loaned
objects begin with an ?L.? To request permission to film, photograph, or
copy a loaned object, call our Registration Office at (612) 870-3123 during
regular work hours.
