Does this PC to MD cable have a model number so I can search for it online?
Is it available now? From?

Thanks for the note Shawn, I'm forwarding it to the MD mailing list. I
had also heard something about this new digital version, and that you
will be able to do titling (to an MZ-R90/91) with it. If you (or
anyone) finds a URL for the new device, I'd love to put it in the
news. -Thanks, Rick

Hi, just wanted to say I love your site and have some news for you to
put on your website (I also posted it on the MP3 to MD discussion
board). I asked Sony about their first announcement on the PC to MD
cable being sold separately for $49.99 which is now being bundled
with the MZR-37 and MZR-55. It looks like the USB cable bundle is
analog, because Sony emailed me today and said while the USB cable
won't be sold separately they will be selling a *digital* version in
the spring (see below). Cheers, Shawn

Dear Sony Customer:

Thank you for contacting Sony.

I apologize that Sony will not be manufacturing the ANALOG version
(PC-to-MD Interface) that is referenced in this News Release.

However, Sony will be coming out with a DIGITAL interface sometime
after May 2000, and it will be sold as a separate item.

Please advise if you have any questions, or if I may be of further
assistance.

Thank you for your interest in Sony products.

Best regards,

Sony Internet Department

I saw this news release on your site and was wondering when the item
below will be available for sale. I know the item is being bundled
with the MZ-R37 and MZ-R55 but I already have a Sony minidisc MZ-R91
and would like to buy the cable separately. Regards, Shawn

PC-to-MD Interface: Internet Music Files Now on Your MD "A growing
number of people are compiling music on their PC," Boire said. "With
the PC-to-MD interface, you can now create custom compilations from
music stored on your PC and record onto an MD for playback anytime,
anywhere." The PC-to-MD interface is a cable-and-software bundle
that allows digital music to be recorded from your PC on to an MD
recorder. Music is recorded in real time. Two versions of the cable
are available, linking an MD recorder with either a USB or parallel
port of a PC. The software included in the bundle is Secure Digital
Music Initiative (SDMI)-compliant and will allow you to manage your
music files and create song lists to listen to on your PC or record
onto an MD. This new PC-to-MD interface will be available in the
first quarter of 2000 at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of
$49.99.

Excellent! I haven't really been following 2.3 development very closely.
Does the Sony device comply to the USB audio specs?

A thing about USB 1.1 is that there is provision for "vendor devices".
These devices do not fit in one of the standard device classes (USB point
to point network cables are a good example of this). Each vendor device
requires a driver written just for it.

So, to answer your question, we do not know, yet. If it is a USB Audio
device, then it should work. If it is a USB Vendor device, then specs on
the device will need to be acquired from Sony and a driver written for it.

At last! How long have we been waiting for this?

Just a pity it's going to be USB (and probably expensive if Sony are
making it) because I don't have any USB ports (an extra 10 UKP) and I
won't be able to use it with Linux unless somebody hacks a driver for it
in 2.3, which will probably take at least 8 months... On the other hand
the parallel version might work but the drivers will still take ages to
come out (unless Sony uncharacteristically supplies programming info...
hmm...rather unlikely I think)

Does anybody know if it will have a digital input as well? That's what I
really need (already have a digital output on my sound card).

Jonathan
