The outcome here depends on the threads, in other words did the bolt just gradually back out or are the threads damaged? Best case: you get a new bolt, and you live happily ever after. If the threads are damaged, in theory you can try to machine the crank but no one I have talked to supports that on a diesel, in practice. The alternative is a new crank. I don't enjoy telling you this, but it's based on my own experience a few years ago. I was lucky... the bolt went in, tightened okay and everyone breathed a sigh of relief... when it was still there a couple of months later. Was your engine rebuilt at some point? Mac
Re: [MBZ] Crankshaft dampner off on 240D
Happened to my 81 also. It was the pulleys, not the damper. Some bolts snapped, some loose. take out the pulleys and you should be able to unscrew the broken off bolts. A dremel or die grinder to cut screwdriver slots may help. Buy 6 new allen head capscrews. (Rusty or an industrial supply place) Put the belts on the damper, put the pulleys on the damper and put the bolts in. If the damper truly is off, then you have lost the big bolt and washer. best found from a salvage engine. Make sure the alignment pins are in place and that you have the damper aligned properly so tdc is when the engine is at TDC. Replace big bolt and torque it good. I definitely suggest that you get new bolts AND WASHERS. As I remember, the washer on the big bolt is deformed, and a new one is the only way to get the proper retaining tension. All new bolts and washers (including the big washer) cost me about $20 from the dealer. Thomas E. RE: [MBZ] Crankshaft dampner off on 240D
It is a common problem. I am not sure if it is a design problem or occurs after a PO (or their mechanic) failed to torque the bolts properly. The large bolt is VERY difficult to torque, as you must find some method to keep the crankshaft from turning whist you apply the torque. I would suggest an annual check of the dampener bolt torque. All computer controled auto accessories are equipped with a thought process. The ACC saw you comming out of the store, decided the jig was up, and will play nice for a while. Unfortunately, they can also read maps and calculate distance. So if you dont take the LED's with you, about the time you cross the 100 mile border, the ACC will begin to act up again. Be prepared.. Take the blister packs.. Richard K4PKV --- OK Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I bought the LEDs to wire in and see what's going on. They are still sitting on the table in the Radio Shack blister packs. Re: [MBZ] Diagnosing problems on my '72 250C
Do you have a fuel pressure regulator in line after the fuel pump. These carbs only need a few pounds of fuel pressure and the floats may not be able to shut off anything over 4 or 5 lbs pressure. A proper fuel pump ( not electric ) might be your first cure. Check your choke flaps to see if they're working right. I don't have a regulator after the pump-if I can get one, what PSI do I want one for, or one set to? Thanks! Michael

[MBZ] Thanks for all the help on my 250C!
I just wanted to write in at this time and thank everyone that has chimed in and helped with suggestions on my 250C trouble. It has gotten a bit frustrating for me, and having some new outlooks have helped. I am going to start in this afternoon on some of your new approaches and see where that gets me. Here is a summary of what I know about the car: '72 250C w/50K original miles. Dual Zenith carbs-just rebuilt by me. I am no pro, but have probably rebuilt 30 or so carbs in the past ten or twelve years-mostly simple things like old Hollys, but also some Carters, whatever an MG had on it (I think they were some kind of Zenith, too), something off of a Renault, and whatever was on a '72 dart with a 318? Sat for app 4-5 years before I purchased it in January. Supposedly ran fine when parked prior to that. I had it running shortly after bringing it home, but once I had it running and holding idle, it would move under its own power, but only get up to about 20-25 MPH, and then would plateau. It would not stop running, not surge, not cough or sputter, but simply would not go any faster-it actually, I think, once got up to enough speed that it kicked into third on the auto transmission, but never went any faster. Not long after this I started having trouble with it even staying running. I will admit that, at first, I was trying to run it on the old fuel in its tank. I since began running it on an aux tank of fresh gas. I just rebuilt the carbs in the past three weeks to see if this helped. I can now get it to start, but have to use a spritz of ether or a dribble of gas in the carb to get it to start. Once running, it sounds pretty good. However, once running, it also seems to die after about 20-30 seconds at best. If I try to restart it will TRY to start, but won't quite go. If I reprime it with ether/gas, it will start again a few times, then won't (flooding?). I know that the wire to one cut-off selenoid that screws into the base of the carbs is off, and is not of a length that I can easily repair it. The other is still on and attached. SO, today I am going to: Change the condensor Check the ignition module beneath the battery tray Look for two boxes and vacuum diaphragms on the left (passenger) inner fender and see how they look. Check the points gap and the points. Any other suggestions for right now-just trying to update and summarize so that everyone knows what has been done and what is being done. Thanks! J. IMHO, I find that BMW do not stand the test oif time anywhere near as wsell as MBs do. I often tell people that they seem to be a 5-7 year car. After that they fall apart. Re: [MBZ] Re: Who's bright idea was this...
Maybe I should clarify my gripe... tintint law itself isn't a problem. The way that it is being enforced I disagree with. Some states have cards with text of varying level of contrast on them. Based on which line is readable you can tell the tint level (or at least legal or not... been a while since I read about that). The law went into effect with no notice, and no grace period. Nobody has the machines to certify, etc. Nobody can get their regular inspection sticker now because the regular inspection sticker can't be given out if the tint sticker is given out, etc. Basically its overkill for the level the problem is... Re: [MBZ] Re: Who's bright idea was this...
The tint law has been in effect in NC for years. It is largely ignored by the officers, however. My 300TD was a Georgia car, with windows that were darn near black. I drove it that way for a year, with a state inspection sticker on the window, and was not stopped. But I decided not to press my luck, and removed the tint. That was a *JOB* btw. I'm not a law enforcement officer either, but understand their point in spades. For the folks who want a cooler car in the parking lot, get a cover. [MBZ] price of diesel...interesting theory...
I know these threads get tiring, but I am still in my first year of dieseling and I recall from this past winter the mantra Diesel is always higher in the winter because of demand for heating oil. Gas is higher in the summer becuase of the travel season Fall agricultural use also uses alot of diesel it was said...can't see, personally, how it's more than planting in winter - it should be less. Plow, till, rotovate, plant, cultivate, etc...harvest is nothing in comparison. ANYWAY, What the hell is the story now? From what I know, there are no diesel refineries, there are oil refineries and all sorts of stuff gets separated out. It can only be two things, it seems: 1. Higher demand. Well, I doubt that as train shipping has jumped substantially (this happens in uncertain economic times and confirmed by my friend who works for one of the big rail freight lines) and trains use ALOT less diesel to move the same freight as trucks would. Is trucking up so much to offset this and create higher demand? 2. Conspiracy (unproveable speculation here). The oil companies remember that the '70's oil crisis caused a jump in the sale of diesel vehicles. It's happening again. Many new diesel models introduced. Front cover of local car mag advertized the diesel Passat Wagon at 30-whatever mpg, etc. Fed gov just passed a $4,000 (!) tax credit for the purchase of a new diesel vehicle. The oil co's didn't care in the 70's/80's as they sold gas and diesel. WHAT IS DIFFERENT NOW is that BioD is becoming increasingly popular (log way to go, but no doubt it is happening). I am wondering if they are not keeping the cost high to DISSUADE the purchase of diesel vehicles which in a few years might be able to fill up on BioD for less than dinoD, which will mean $0 from THAT customer to big oil (unless they are in the BioD game too (I would be if I were them)). In Germany BioD is the CHEAPEST fuel available...so with economy of scale, price will come way down. (Euro fuels are so high becuase they are about 70% tax). Thoughts on the conspiracy theory? P.S. THe old 240D (new to me) is working great. Fun...going from the SD to it is like driving a Mercedes go-cart...peppier than I thought (W115 might be the reason). Thanks. Same with oil. The refiners are making windfall profits. The future price of a barrel of crude goes up on a the market at noon, by two the price of fuel at the pump has gone up. We the consumers are hostage to the monopoly so we pay up. The price of fuel goes to $2.50 then drops to $2.30 and we think we are getting a bargain. Then the price of fuel goes to $2.70 and drops to $2.50 and again we think we are getting a deal. The actual cost of the fuel we are using now was probably $40 a barrel. Eventually, this should bring about inflation or the perception of inflation, causing interest rates to rise. Which will depress the economy even further. Enough doom and gloom. Re: [MBZ] Diagnosing problems on my '72 250C
Okay-cannot seem to get a condensor for now. Cannot seem to access any of the connectors to the ignition module under the battery tray for now. I went out and looked, and yes, to whomever asked, there are two small black boxes and two small vacuum diaphragm style modules on the passenger inner fender. Underneath these were two small vacuum hoses that were going to nothing. One of the vacuum modules had a vacuum hose connected, while the other had an open port on its top, and two open ones underneath. Before doing anything, I hooked up a CLEAN fuel supply, and tried to start it-no go on its own. I gave it a spritz of starting fluid and it roared to life, and sounded pretty good for about 10 seconds, then began to dwindle and died after it struggled to stay alive under my feathering of the accelerator pedal for about five more seconds. I tried to start it again-no go, tried to open the choke setting slightly-had it almost completely closed. No start. Tried it like this with starter fluid. No start. Attached the two vacuum lines. No start. Tried this set up with starter fluid. No start. Switched vacuum lines and tried again. No start. Closed choke back down, tried. No. Starter fluid. No. So after the initial run, which was longer than it would have lasted with just the starter fluid, it would not start even when primed with starter fluid. So I am back to thinking that ther ehas to be a flooding issue. Anyone agree, or am I just an idiot? Thanks! Michael

The problem is in determining the capacitance specifications. Better yet, throw the points and condenser away and get an electronic trigger (Compufire, Petronix, et. al.). This is the best solution, IMNQSHO. How do you know your condenser is malfunctioning. Unless your points are burning badly in a short period or you have a hot start problem, the condenser is fine. I know: everyone changes them when they change points. I do not; I rarely change condensers. My points last as long as those that have the condenser changed. I can't remember the last time I changed points on anything. The jeep has at least 35k on its set, and is just starting to get a hint of spark scatter :) K
[MBZ] FTP SERVER NOTICE!!
To all list members... Today someone on the list accessed the FTP server I have set up. Instead of logging in only once, the user decided to log in 25 times to start simultaneous downloads. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated. If it happens again, not only will the users IP address be banned permanently, but the server will be shut down for good. I am hesitant to set up a limit because I remember what a headache it was with Mickey's server. Please only log in once and have only one download at a time. If you want to download multiple files, please queue them up and be patient. The computer is not a dedicated server and I simply do not have the bandwidth to support such a large amount of file transfer. [MBZ] Re: Who's bright idea was this...
If you got inspected, and if they checked it, yes they would make you fix it. I've only taken one vehicle through the process and it was pretty basic. They checked the Vin # on the post and the vin stamped under the hood. Thanks for stopping by, have a nice day. That's not to say on a slow day they might not check more, but it was a simple process that I observed. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The reason I needed inspected was the car had been part of a bankruptcy proceeding and didn't have a proper title. When I brought a car in from out of state, twice now, there was no inspection at all. Since the titles were in order they simply transferred them to a WA state title in the office with no other problems. I'm gonna ask, since I might be moving out there soon...would my non-working parking brake cause my car to fail inspection in WA? I'm not sure yet whether I'll bring it or sell it before I go, but if I decide to bring it that would be a concern.
[MBZ] Re: What......
That explains it. No money in the inspections so why invest in the machinery. Sounds like it's gonna suck to have ANY tinted windows. My car has the tint because it came from California. I wouldn't have done it myself, but the tint has kind of grown on me. I like to look of the black car with the black windows now. [MBZ] Re: Cost of Dist Condensor
Actually condensors have a value that is important to prevent point failure. The old timers actually looked at how the points were wearing and would adjust the condensor value to prevent transfer from one contact to the other. If you knew the value of the stock condensor you could find a cheap alternate to replace the obscenely priced MB product. One said they couldn;t even get the condensor for my car ('72 250C), and the other said they could have one here tomorrow morning. However, the cost for it was $25.00, basically. Does that sound right? I thought someone on this list that recommended I try changing it said it would only be about $5.00. Except for the mounting bracket, condensors is condensors. You might see if there's a VW part that fits.
Re: [MBZ] Re: WA state emissions testing
the old days of georgia inspection were the best when i moved here, my car immediately failed georgia emissions. I explained to the guy at the major chain muffler shop how confusing this was to me and he told me not to worry but to go to a certain address with $50. so i drove to this place and told them my story. the fella asked me for $50. i gave it to him. he gave me a sticker. i was now legal! those glory days are long gone, my friends, but what days they were BTW, when i moved here a decade ago, many cars on the road weren't even tagged. alas, that has changed as well :( At 06:00 PM 7/7/2005, you wrote: As I understand the rules King, Pierce and Snohomish counties check emissions. Only portions of Pierce and Sno, are required so there it depends where you are living. The emissions check has a standard you must meet. If you don't meet the standard then you must spend a certain amount of money on repairs at a certified repair facility. After that you get reinspected. If you don't meet the spec then, you still get your cert, simply because you spent the money to fix it. As I understand it you cannot get the exemption for work done yourself, it has to be a certified facility. What about emissions? How strict are they on tampering? Would a missing ALDA cap be a disqualification? From what I recall, emissions testing on diesels varies by county. The county that seattle is in (King?) required testing from what I recall, but they were more interested in opacity than anything. I'd wager that a missing cap isn't something that will cause problems provided they don't have a reason to go hunting. My 190D, being a 2.2 five speed, doesn't have an ALDA, and was registered in a county that did not do emissions testing on diesels. You should probably tell the list where you are planning on moving so that someone from that county can give you more specific details. It'd be King county. ___ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] For new parts see www.buymbparts.com For repairs see www.oldworldauto.com To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net
