[MBZ] OT: V-8 Engine on Snow Blower

2005-12-25 Thread OK Don
I see that they offer a Diesel option --

For the man with everything - the V8 snowblower December 1,

2005 If

you're tired of anaemic, one-lung snowblowers with their slipping

drive belts, you might consider Kai Grundt's V8 snow blower which

raises the bar on the traditional snow blower in every respect.

With

electric start, electric block heater, antifreeze heater and eight

cylinders, it has no drive belts to freeze up and you'll never get

bored with the job as the 454 cubic inch big block Chevrolet V8

produces 412 horsepower, 430 foot pounds of torque and can throw

snow

50 feet at just 3500 rpm. Nor will you get cold as the machine has

been ingeniously designed to route the engine coolant through the

handle bars, with the rear mounted, enclosed radiator keeping the

 operator nice and cosy.

The first point to make is that this is not a V8 grafted on a

traditional snow blower carriage but a purpose-built unit crafted

around a motor of this magnitude. It functions very much like a

traditional blower by way of operator input and feedback and

offers

 effortless safe operation.

Manouevering the massive beastie (it has a total wet weight of

912lbs)

is a snack thanks to the hydraulic-drive 4WD skid steer on

independent

walking beams which offers a zero turning radius. It's also as fast

as

you like, with an infinitely adjustable speed range on the drive

wheels via dash mounted flow control. At the opposite end of the

scale, it has more than enough torque to pull your car out of the

ditch before the hydraulic motors stall!

Adding to the well-balanced feel of the unit, just 15 pounds of

down

force on the handlebars will lift the auger blade off the ground in

order to climb stairs/walkways for ease of snow removal. Safety has

and continues to be paramount with spring return to centre

fail safe

type directional controls with emergency stop and tether cords.

Safety is one of the key theme, with a flashing blue light (as

required by law in many areas) being the least of the safety

features.

No-one will fail to hear you with those twin throaty exhausts,

which

come standard with 92 decibels at the controls, though if the

rhumba

of a V8 exhaust is music to your ears, you can obviously go much

louder. Even at the standard baffling, hearing protection is

strongly

 suggested.

The powerful yard machine lights and a dashboard with backlit

gauges

complete the package to ease the burden of this normally reviled

task.

The custom 42 inch, two stage auger has a Chevrolet 10 bolt truck

differential with spool and a centrifugal auger clutch with shear

pin

protection, further adding to the image of this automotive

theme

 blower.

As each unit is cutom-built, optional extras for the snowblower are

both diverse and outrageous as the base unit - there is unlimited

auger choices from single to multi stage designs and various motor

combinations to suit the religious preferences of the customer

(Chevy,

Dodge Hemi, Ford) and such exotica as a V-10 or a diesel engine or

 remote starting can be accommodated.

And if, after a while, you feel you've outgrown the 400 horses,

this

particular engine is well catered for in the performance

modification

area, with Lunati camshaft, Milodon Gear drive, Holley and

Edelbrock

components to name a few, and there's always the fuel injection

option

too, if you feel you need to throw the snow out of the county or

ensure your seat in the neighborhood blower blingster hall of

fame.

[MBZ] 240d - 300sd alternator interchange (semi-emergency)??

2005-12-25 Thread Steve MacSween
Ah, the joys of the holiday season. My alternator started to 'chatter' this
afternoon (actually, it sounded more like the water pump at the time). At 4
p.m. it seized up solid, belt melted off, etc.

My two 240Ds (w123s, 1982) are parked at a storage lot. Anyone know if a
quick change will work?

Thx and merry merry, etc.

Will it fit the mount? That is all I'd worry about in such an emergency
situation. Volts are volts coming out of the alternator; only the amps will
be different.

[MBZ] How safe is buying a car without a title and what can be done to get it titled!?

2005-12-25 Thread kayoooh @ gmail
Merry Christmas Listers,

can any of you tell me what is involved in titling a car bought with a bill
of sale!? Any pitfalls to look out for?

The seller says that it is done often enough that I need not worry and that
I can either do it my self or have a pro do it for a small fee! Is that true
and how small is small!?

The seller bought the car from a dealer in the Midwest who had bought it at
an auction in PA and the sealer lost or misplaced the title since then!!

Is it safe to buy a car on two bills of sale from two different sellers who
are in two corners of the country!?

Any input will be appreciated and thank you all,

Omar.

It's state-dependent. In WA the process for seizing a title involves
registered mail to the PO of record. I'm unsure about a car that was
titled in a different state. But your friendly DMV worker will be glad
to explain it all to you. In WA a car can be licensed sans title, so
you can be on the road while it all clears up. (Or not.)

Bosch alternators fit the same across a range of sizes. But on high
output ones the terminals are different, and of course there's the
pulley type to deal with, as well as potential differences in where
the pulley's plane lies. But chances are very good it'll work, the
worst you'd have to do is transfer the pulleys, etc.

Did the 93 300SD have a 3.5 litre engine that is not a rodbender?

To render it excruciatingly clear, for whatever reason the early
W140 300SD used a 3.5l motor, contrary to most of their badging
practices, and contrary to cars that used that very motor both before
and after. OTOH, anybody _ever_ seen a 190E/D with a 1.9l motor?
The correlation between number and engine displacement is only
approximate, but the only out-and-out lies I can think of (leaving
out auxiliary badging such as 6.3, 6.9, etc.) are the early 350 SL,
 that 300SD, and the W201 190.

Re: [MBZ] How safe is buying a car without a title and what can be done to get it titled!?

2005-12-25 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Depends on what state you are in. It could be a hassle but not
undoable. Here in OK there is a procedure to go thru on cars with no
title. Basically what you are doing is putting a storage lien on it or
repair lien or whatever. You get some paperwork from the state DMV,
fill it out, you have to get a record of the last known owner and send
them a certified letter, publish the date and time of your auction,
and also post it in another public place. Think it has to be posted in
3 different placed. Anyways, after you do this, you send proof of
mailing, proof of public posting, then proof that you sold the car at
auction (to yourself) in and you get a title in your name. OR, some
states will give you a title from just a bill of sale. In OK if you buy
a car from a state that doesnt give titles on cars over a certain age,
you can get a OK title just from a bill of sale. Then there are title
companies. One is broadway title I think, they charge something like
$350 to get a title. They have a website I do believe.

The OM603.97 engine develops about 10% more torque than the OM603.96
engne did. The reason the '90-'91 603.97 engines had lower power was
because they were rev limited to about 4200rpm (max hp is at 4400-4600
rpm). After the rev limit wa removed (alowed to go to 5100) ower came
right up to 148 hp.

Alabama - at that time, Ala didn;t require a title - a bill of sale would
satisfy the state department of transportation.

I'm pretty sure they no longer allow that kind of registration - at least
not as easy as it used to be. I'm pretty sure that when they standardized
the VIN system in 1982 they put an end to that kind of practice.

While it may be possible to get the car *eventually* put in your name it
adds to the risk level greatly. You risk paying money and getting a car and
a handful of papers - but not being able to drive the car the way it is.
Add to that level of risk, *2* Bills of Sale, takes it to the next level,
then, 2 different hands on the deal in different corners of the country -
and for me, the level of risk becomes *very* high. Not that it may not end
up being a legitimate sale, but the time needed to get it to the point where
you might be able to start driving it may be lengthy - and costly.

If it were me and I really wanted the car, and the price was right - I'd ask
the *seller* to spend the *small* amount to turn the BOS into a proper
title. You need to walk away unless he produces a title. If it;s as easy
as he claims, he should be able to get a title. Since he claims it's easy
and done all the time, let him prove it by doing it himself - since he
claims it's so darned easy.

In any case, it'll be infinately easier for *you* if he does all the work

The first thing I would do is get the full VIN and stop by your local
police station. Let them know you are looking at the vehicle but the
seller claims the title was lost and you want to make sure it isn't
reported stolen before you buy it.

2005-12-25 Thread Hans Neureiter
I had experience with Alabama. The state was until 1980's a Non Title
state. If a vehicle falls in the grandfather clause, I think it has to have
a pre 1985 manufacture date, and the vehicle has never been titled in the
state you want to title it in, you transfer it to an Agency with a Bill of
Sale and accompanying money for their fees. They than register it in Alabama
and transfer it back to you with a Bill of Sale and the AL registration
records. Sounds scary, but it works.
I did it with my vintage '72 Triumph T100 Daytona. It had a Indiana title
that got lost. In order to get a duplicate, I would have had to take it to
Indy and show them the bike. I remember the fee was $ 70 for a bike. A car
was maybe double that.

603.970 = 133hp @ 4000, 228lb-ft @ 2000
603.971 = 148hp @ 4000, 229lb-ft @ 2200

Max RPM (+/- 150rpm):
603.96x = 5150rpm
603.970 = 4250rpm
603.971 = 4750rpm

For 1987 models with the trap oxidizer, the power dropped to 143hp and
195 lb-ft, at the same rpm's. I tweaked my pump to have the max RPM
limit at the upper tolerance (5400 rpm). Nitpickers will note that the
older published specs show +/- 150rpm, while later specs from the WIS
show +/- 250rpm and a 5400rpm limit. The assorted spec sheets are
