Susan was driving about 35mph when a woman in a 2007 (yes, 2007) Lexus pulled
across the road; never saw my wife until they collided. Susan tried to turn
into a parking lot driveway so the left front corner took the hit but the other
car was moving hard enough to twist the front end of our car.

The front passenger side door opens but with slight resistance; oil started
running out but not before she cut the car off. I'm assuming it was the oil
cooler.

The other driver took responsibility for the incident.

We want to get the car fixed.

Any where I can post some pictures? We want to have it repaired jf we can.

This really puts a kink in our summer plans. One of our children is getting
married in three weeks and moving to Texas. My wife needs a wagon to do all the
wedding stuff as well as get our daughter's house ready to sell - all that 80

to Oshkosh in July.

Met him after the show and he taught one of the kids a magic trick.
Next day saw Yakov, that one was great also. Also checked out Ripleys,
the titanic, and the wax museum. On the way out of town, just got on
the highway from 76 and a little while down the road get a visit from

getting on the highway. I tried explaining physical impossibility of
that and the fact that folks were passing me in the left lane but that
got nowhere. So my options are to either mail in the money(they

crime has dropped quite a bit since we now have the carry conceal laws
etc. And I believe it was florida where now they target folks that look

Jim Cathey wrote:

I'm not saying that's a bad idea, but I'd be sure of the legality of it

That's exactly the sort of thing that can turn a routine police stop
into a trip-ending legal nightmare.

If it's unloaded and locked into a non-reachable box it's legal in
all states. Federal interstate transport law. Not to say you wouldn't
get into a hassle anyway, but the chances are slim. It's really
for those nighttime sleep-overs, and if you really need it the
potential cop-hassle is the _least_ of your problems. Store the
ammo separately, btw.

It's odd, but in most places it is illegal to some degree or another
to actually have the ability to defend yourself, yet that is what
you are required to do!

OT, but I believe that everybody should be able to pack heat at
all times. Just be prepared to defend your actions in court, and
be prepared to pay a heavy price if you're a fool! Does anybody
think that we'd really have more crime under such a system? It'd
be a different mix of crimes to be sure, but I think that there
really would be less of it. I can think of some 3000-odd people
that wouldn't be dead right now...

Now that I've thrown that grenade...

2006-06-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Yes, the CA uses the 722.4, and I THINK, but am not sure, that you can
use one out of a 190. In any event, the 85 version 722.3 can be used in
place of the CA 722.4

tom savage wrote:

A friend's brother has an '85 300D from California with 240k miles and
an apparently toasted transmission. I know 1985 was an odd year for the
300D/SD and even wierder for those models sold in the California
Republic. It is my understanding that Federal-spec '85s used the good
old 722.3 transmission but with a different torque convertor and other
bits, while the CA models used a 722.4 trans. Am I right so far?

I've also heard that an earlier transmission won't work with an '85
engine, but that the '85 transmission will work with an earlier engine.
So there are a few interchangability issues at the end of 123
production. Now enter the CA factor - must the tranny in a CA '85 be
replaced with same, or will a standard '85 unit work? Or maybe even an
earlier unit?

The car seems to be in good shape but while he likes it, the owner has
several other cars and just isn't sufficiently devoted to it to invest
several grand in a new transmission. He would consider a known good
used transmission, if he can find one that will work. "Otherwise he'll
probably just scrap it." And I won't let that happen, not to those
pristine rockers and wheel arches.

Here's a quick rule of thumb when replacing the serpentine belt. Check the
operation of all the drive components, idler, tensioner and so on. If any
of these have excessive play or are noisy, replace it. They don't always
last the life of the car so its a good bet to replace them if you car has
high mileage.

The original tensioner arms and idlers used on '84-'85 OM60x engines
seldom lasted more than 50-75kmi. The later ones seemed good for
75-150kmi. By the '90s they may still be better (the aftermarket ones
MAY not be - I haven't had any of them in long enough to know). Factory
shocks seem to last 75+kmi while aftermarket ones seem more likely to
fail by 50kmi. The belts on my cars seem to go for 75kmi as long as the
arm and idler are in good working order (a bad arm, idler, shock or any
belt driven accessory will cause a belt to fail prematurely).

YMMV as climatic and environmental factors DO play a role in life of
these parts.

Sticking valve. They tend to aquire deposits on the stem, preventing
them from closing properly (and in fact, may be actually shoved nearly
closed by the piston). Needless to say, all the symptoms of low

Easy to check, just pull the intake and take a look. Excessive

Whoops, I should have clarified that a bit. The metal sockets are
available separately but my approach is to scrounge a handful of
pieces at pick-and-pull. The stock OM60x links have a threaded metal
shaft and the plastic links are pressed on at the ends. You remove the
metal sockets from the junkyard rods and screw them onto your existing
links, securing the socket with the 8mm locknut. Make sure you measure
the old links first before removing the plastic sockets!

Wlll, apart from the #1 valve being pretty much closed, before, I don't
think we'll ever be able to say for sure.

My theory (which is mine, which is to say it belongs to me) is that the
valve not working properly caused a buildup of deposits in the upper
chamber, which I guess I am now burning away.

How that relates to the way it's behaving now (erratic idle) is beyond my
skill set or imagination to explain, tho.

What I *can* say is that it sounds completely different now, than when I
first drove it last year. Sounds better than my SD, as a matter of fact, and
that is running really nicely right now (looks around frantically for piece
of wood).

The newest revised Mercedes supplied intake manifold gasket has a
silicone seal bead (not sure that any aftermarket gasket has this) that
is there to prevent any oil accumulation at the #2 intake runner (and to
a lessor degree #1 and #3) from wicking thru. The use of M-1 rather than
ANY group III/II or I oil helps and disabling the EGR and cleaning out
the intake manifold of soot/oil sludge seem to help too. It is USUALLY
not a matter of tightening the manifold in a specific manor, but doing
it evenly. The torque may have been increased from 25 to 30 Nm.

I know this is kinda dated, but I've been out of town for a few weeks.

I'd be much more concerned about the state of the climate control than
I would about the wiring harness. Changing an engine wiring harness is
relatively painless (and cheap) compared to pulling the entire
interior to preplace a leaking evaporator!

Seriously, replacing the engine wiring harness is not that difficult a
DIY job. If I routinely traveled in lower altitudes, I'd go with the
'95 over the turbo.

The '95 E300Ds with the OM606.91 engine (124.131) have the bad wiring

[MBZ] Throttle Linkage - was GP Install - 91 300D 2.5

2006-06-02 Thread ned kleinhenz

Aaron suggested:
<< Another thing I recommend doing is replacing the plastic throttle
linkage sockets with the old-style metal ones. The plastic ones are
prone to breaking and when they do, you'll be stranded with a car that
just idles. >>

Wait a minute - wait a minute, Aaron! You make that recommendation like
anyone can just walk up to a parts counter and specify metal sockets instead
of plastic ones. What more can you tell us about how to do this? I
recently broke one of those plastic linkages while trying to pry it off.
Rusty sent me an identical plastic one to replace it. (an offical MB part)
Each one of those links has a specific length, configuration and socket
orientation. So, I didn't expect to find a one size fits all type. Does MB
or some after-market supplier sell metal ones for the OM-60X engines? I
agree those plastic ones are a PITA, and I suspect they embrittle with age.

Not wishing to count chickens before, etc., I am pleased to report that
the

240d seems to be improving by the day.

I have driven it for about three hours in the last three days and it now
idles with almost no smoke (and it smoked some even before #1 cylinder
packed it in).

It runs very nicely on the road, and the power is coming back. Best
indicator, aside from the seat of my pants, is that I can now get into 4th
without using up a mile of tarmac ;-). Other automatic 240d owners will
understand what I mean

HOWEVER, we aren't out of the woods yet as it's a complete tossup as to
what

it does, once you come to a stop. Sometimes it idles so close to perfect
it's scary. Other times it's back to behaving like an unbalanced old
Kenmore

washer, chugga lugga chug chug cough splutter rock'n roll'n bounce.

Keep your collective fingers crossed on this one. I figure my chances are
about 50/50 to be back driving it within a week, OR to report I've blown
it

up on the next test drive.

In any case, all of the list input on this one was hugely appreciated.

How practical would steam cars be using WVO?

steam engine in an MB?

Quote from steamcar website:
"I personally believe the ability to run a modern steam car easily on
biodiesel is very important if the green image is the one used to sell -
also perhaps takes the heat off the drawback that our vehicle cannot

September 2003.

"In a reversal of fortune for German-American automotive giant

was more of a drag on sales. In May, Mercedes-Benz sales grew 21 percent

Did the ATF change on the e300d sunday and it came out as clean as the
day it went in. I think I had the shop change the fluid in Charleston

whatever lived in there before. What came out had 20k on it, so I am
thinking that I just change fluid and filters at the same time and no
intervening fluid change.

needed a tranny flush (burned fluid). Reasonable enough I suppose,
though I did change the tranny fluid a year and half ago or so. I
know

that does not get the TC fluid out, which continues to be old stuff.
There was a bit of discussion on this flush technique a few weeks ago,
sounds like an OK procedure. I am wondering though, how the tranny is
set up -- does TC fluid actually mix with the pan fluid in some
fashion

while operating? Is draining/refilling a time or two a close enough
approach to cleaning out the TC? Tranny fluid is cheap enough
compared

to the flush cost ($50), seems like it might do pretty close if just
cleaning the fluid is the main benefit.

Thoughts?

Re: [MBZ] 82 300TDt -wrecked

2006-06-02 Thread Harry Watkins
Joe Knight wrote this back in April. His approach paid off.

"Finally! Just heard from the Farmers agent from up in the Redding
area. She'd just gotten back from the body shop and has authorized
repairs totalling a tad over $7200, supplements to follow. Anybody
think of anything else I should be asking for beyond direct expenses
and compensation for loss of use? I think it's probably a little late
to bring a chiropractor into the picture. ;(

More history, to which there is a bit of a point if you'll bear with
me. Accident, for which the other driver was clearly responsible,
happened Feb 16. Took 'em quite a spell to come up with any sort of
admission of liability, which came in the form of an offer to settle
and total the car accompanied by a check for $3800 & change. While I
was psyching myself up for going toe to toe with them in a legal arena
someone suggested I get the wagon appraised. So, not alltogether
optimistically, I did a little surfing for auto appraisers and came up
with a website for the Auto Appraisal Group, nationwide outfit, that
for the nominal sum of $25 does a thing called a Value Range
Report/survey/whatever. So thinking only that this might give me a
clue as to whether it might be worth my while to spend significantly
more for a full blown appraisal, I filled out the online form and
authorized the $25 and a couple of hours later I had by email evidence
that my wagon should appraise somewhere between $9500 & $13500.
Couldn't foresee any problem with passing this little gem on to
Farmers, whose agent had previously suggested I buy my own appraisal,
so I did. Right away, I got a call from them and suddenly they wanted
to buy an appraisal. Few days later the appraiser came out and I
supplied her with the comps I'd been collecting and the Value Range
thingy from AAG and let her do her thing. Next morning came another
call from Farmers informing me they'd decided to fix the wagon after
all when the appraisal came in at $11500. Today's call pretty much
set that in stone so far as I can tell.

The appraised value was arrived at by averaging the listed prices for
which 3 'comparable' vehicles were being offered. The nice appraiser
used two of the comps I'd supplied her, after verifying them I later
learned, and another kind of lowball example, no doubt a rustbelt
beater.Could have been a bit higher but was more than sufficient
to the purpose. Warmed the cockles of my wee heart that Farmers got
to pay $372 for the appraisal only to find they were going to have to
put out what will no doubt turn out to be more than double their
original settlement offer.

So the moral to this story is to keep in mind the potential power of
an independent appraisal should any of you find yourself in a similar
situation and are sure that your local market will support a much
higher assigned value to your ride than what resulted from an
insurance company's internally generated valuation. I suppose that
even if you have to spring for the appraisal youself and it turns out
to support your position you should be able to include that in the
costs for which you are due restitution. Reminds me, I need to
include that $25 in my expenses resulting from this fiasco. :)

joe"

A follow-up from Joe:

Actually, Loren, it was the 'dood from California's' sales records
that provided me with 2 of the comp's my appraisal was based on. He's
also doing the repairs, including an upgrade to the late production
hood/grill & headlights. I'm just now getting off an email to Speed
to see if I can pick up a pair of '94-'95 lenses to go into euro
headlight housings I've got - fortunately I have a spare to replace
the one that got mangled. There was also a recent sale on ebay that
somebody with the handle of farmerandy, from up Washington way,
snagged for a buy-it-now price of $13.9K; I'm a bit miffed that the
adjuster didn't factor that one into my appraisal, but no matter.

container to catch the old stuff. Start her up and pump about 10 gallons
through and you should have got out pretty well all of the old stuff. Wastes a
bit
of fluid but should be cheaper than having the flush done at the dealer.>>

And I would suggest that you do not try this. Was it on this list or one of
the other two where someone attempted to disconnect these lines for some reason
and damaged the fittings which resulted in buying replacement lines? Further,
just how much does ten gallons of ATF cost? If this were the lifetime (now
39K miles) fluid, ten gallons at dealer retail would cost $592.40. ATF at
WalMart would be less, admittedly.

My own car was in for some warranty repair yesterday and today and I directed
the dealer to change the trans fluid and filter, knowing that only four of
the eight quart capacity could be changed because the torque converter has no
drain plug. Of course, I could have put the thing up on stands in my garage and
pulled the pan to get at the filter. And then measure what I got out so as to
replace just the right amount since there is no built-in dipstick. And
although I could probably use the "shop tool" calibrated dipstick I sometimes
(rarely) use to dip the engine oil, I could not interpret the numbers anyway
without
a printout from the MBUSA tech website for my trans. And then clean up the
mess and me.

So, four quarts of fluid (of the eight quart capacity) plus the filter and
gasket was $241.17 of which $147.20 was labor. I could have had the trans
flushed which would have cleaned out the torque converter but would have cost
another $150 or so. I declined.

Replaced today was the modern equivalent of the vacuum element on a heater
door someplace, a stepper motor. Found by stored error code. And the panel for
the HVAC system since one of the temp adjustment buttons was getting sticky.
All covered under the extended factory warranty I purchased in 2001.

And even though the free loaner car with service ended at the four year
point, they rented me a car anyway. A Cobalt, not nearly as bad as I expected
and
better than the Corolla rental I had six months ago.
