In addition to whatever oil quantity is called for when replacing
a component of the AC system. (There's a table of items and oil
quantities.) For a completely dry system, of course, there's also
the total quantity that you're supposed to have in it, in which case
you disregard all those other numbers.

[MBZ] blower fan wiring upgrade?

2006-07-01 Thread Levi Smith

Has anyone done the wiring upgrade for the blower fan to allow a higher amp
fuse?

I tried a 15amp self-resetting circuit breaker today. I was hoping 1 less
amp wouldn't be noticed much and if I did pop it, I would just get it back
shortly. Well, apparently that one less amp is pretty crucial. I couldn't
even get regular AC to work for long, let alone max fan.

I'm wondering what all has to be upgraded, and where. Do I have to pull
apart the passenger dash panel underneath to get to the motor? And do I
have to replace wires out to the resistors in the right front engine bay and
to the fuse box and/or elsewhere?

If it is that complicated, I'm tempted to just run a new wire/fuse and
switch for max fan and I could just turn it on independant of that the
climate control was thinking... (and without blowing the fuse...)

Thanks!

It was I. Thank you for the info.

The "extra" is added to the oil that didn't come out when the system was
discharged. Even if you open the system to air, MOST of the oil will
remain in various places (evaporator, dryer, compressor, etc.) within
the system.

Most compressors used to come NEW with the proper quantity of oil in
them (not sure about now when there are different oils used depending on
which refrigerant is used). If you wanted to change oil, you were to
remove the oil, measure it and install the same amount of new/fresh oil.
When the system is vented, different amounts of oil will escape
depending on whether it's a slow of FAST leak. Oil that does escape
should be replaced, but too much oil REALLY decreases cooling capacity
and too little results in rapid or even catastrophic compressor wear.

I'm told that MOST systems that are serviced by people not really
skilled at AC work will be a little to a lot overcharged with oil (so
cooling will be much less than optimal).

Sounds very logical. But where I live there are few high performance
foreign cars. This is one of the places you'd call a Ford Pick-em-up area.
A few weeks ago I bought 15W50 in W'mart - had to search behind the
bottles/jugs of 10W30 to find them but they were there. Yesterday I looked
and there weren't *any* 15W50 M1 jugs or bottles. Then again, I've never
been impressed with the stocking procedures used by wmart - I am on a low
carb diet and finding stuff edible with very low carbs take some hunting.
found some snacks that were great - but after a month or so their stock ran
out and it hasn't been resupplied. This has happened on 4 or 5 different
products. I could *swear* someone is watching and saying, "OK here comes
Larry - let's see what he buys and stop stocking it." But that might be
paranoid. ;-\

Same with the oil - my MBs and 911 all need 15W50 - so today I'll check with
Pepboys. Maybe I'll wear a disguise so they won't know it's me. ;-)

availability depends largely on the area. see, as sick as this sounds to
you, stores don't discriminate inventory based on the customer base. I
worked in retail years ago at a department store with a fairly affluent
clientelle. this chain also had stores with much poorer customers. as a
general rule, the poor stores sold a very high percentage of $59 cookware
sets and the store i was at sold every $800 cookware set within 2 days of
receipt. the poor area stores couldn't sell an $800 cookware set to save
their lives. consequently, we always had tons of $59 cookware sets and
they

always had tons of $800 sets. no one was happy!

here on the north side of atlanta you simply CANNOT find the 15w50 at
walmart because of the all the euro cars. basically, if anyone dunwoody
or

alpharetta sees 15w50, he just grabs it all and runs. all that is left is
the lightweight oil.

so the answer is to go out where everyone drives modern ford pickemup
trucks

that use super light oil. those walmarts will have no 5w30, but lots of
15W50.

simple, no?

Re: [MBZ] OT: hitches

2006-07-01 Thread Jim Cathey

I'm not familiar with a Farmall 2-point hitch, though my Iseki has an
interesting 4-point hitch. Three point is a real bitch to use if the
implement is big and imobile; think rototiller or harrow, etc. But,
if the

tractor has adjustable quick release lower arms, it's a real cinch.

The 2-point hitch has a fixed-distance pair of sockets at the back,
into which various implements are put. (Including a drawbar.)
When the prongs of the implement are rammed into place, by backing
the tractor onto them usually, two cam locks snap down trapping
the implement. Then you lift and drive off, you never leave the
seat. There is a hook on a handle that you can unclip from the
console area that you reach down with to yank the cam releases
when removing an implement. Then you just lower and drive off.
Obviously PTO implements require a bit more work!

Via the hydraulics, the hitch can be raised and lowered, and its
fore-aft and left-right tilt can be adjusted. Besides being handy
for initial coupling on irregular ground (and ain't it all?), the
adjustability is a necessity for operating things like a plow. It's
a really slick system, and makes that Ford 3-point look like the
cheap nasty POS that it is.

Our Farmall 200 has this system, somehow I thought they all had it.

Between this hitch system and backing trailers all over the place,
I got _really_ good at backing up when I was a kid. (I loved being
able to hit the hitch prongs on the first shot, the faster the better.)
I still have vestiges of this talent, IMHO. At least, when backing the
car trailer I often get where I want to be with no particular
difficulty.

Gone, probably, is any talent I had for clearing fencelines using the
sickle-bar mower. The game there was to get as much grass as you
could without hitting a fence post. It's a bit weird, because the end
of the sickle bar traces something of an epicycloid path as you weave
in and out. The Farmall's tricycle gear made it a particularly
maneuverable beast, I really liked that tractor. Too bad one would
be a useless deathtrap where I live now.

Re: [MBZ] AC oil question

2006-07-01 Thread Jim Cathey

trying to figure out how to add oil to my system. It says to fill the
various components in the system, but doesn't indicate how one is to
actually accomplish these tasks. My system has no oil whatsoever, so I
gather I'm supposed to fill the compressor and dryer, but it also
mentions

the evaporator; how do you fill the evaporator? How do you fill the
compressor?

You just pour it in a handy hole. There's no point in putting it in
anything but the compressor, unless it won't hold it all. (In which
case pour some into any handy component.) The oil will distribute
itself very quickly, as it's soluble in the refrigerant. The oil
quantities specified for the various components only represent the
amount of distributed oil that resides (at equilibrium) in those
components. Except for the compressor, and to a lesser extent the
expansion valve, the oil is a useless component. The total fill
quantity is calculated to result in the correct amount residing
in the compressor, at equilibrium.

I've never seen a Wal-Mart that didn't have gallons upon gallons of 5w30 and
10w30 but rarely do I ever see any amount of 15w50 or any other useful weight.

I have a cousin that manages the sporting goods department at a Wal-Mart in
Maine. He tells how when he started they were in a bad way because theres not a
tremendous amount of bass fishing in Maine and bass gear is absolutely no good
for trout. It apparently took him YEARS to convince home office that sending
him a stack of bass stuff was only going to result in him sending most of it
back but in the winter time they could send him icefishing stuff because that
would move.
Apparently in more recent years this has gotten to be a whole lot less of an
issue. Wal-Mart is known for being the ultimate make a buck retailer so it
surprises me that they would do something that foolish, but you never can tell,
it could have been a regional guy or something...

trying to figure out how to add oil to my system. It says to fill the
various components in the system, but doesn't indicate how one is to
actually accomplish these tasks. My system has no oil whatsoever, so I
gather I'm supposed to fill the compressor and dryer, but it also mentions
the evaporator; how do you fill the evaporator? How do you fill the
compressor?

[MBZ] Vacuum Pump Driver & Injection Timer

Ha Ha Ha.
My new injection timing device arrived from Rusty, today. Now I got my
answer about the possibility of changing out just the vacuum pump driver
cam. It would be impossible. This whole timing device is a single piece.
The vacuum cam is cast or sintered right into the timing gear. I don't even
see how the centrifugal weight mechanism could be removed. Guess I'm about
to learn a lot about FI pump removals and setting FI timing.

The Castrol Syntec 5W-50 I used some 6+ years ago was a group III
(hydrocracked) oil. To achieve the broad viscosity range they had to use
substantial viscosity improver (VI). After 2-3kmi of diesel service, the
VI deteriorated (creating sludge) and the viscosity and lubricity
dropped and oil consumption skyrocketed. Really unacceptable. I can't
comment about the present Syntec oils, but almost all group III oils
need some viscosity improver to compete with group IV or IV/V oils. The
use of viscosity improvers drastically reduce the stability of any oil
and such oil deteriorates rapidly especially when subjected to high
shear forces. If you choose to use group III "synthetic" oils expect to
change them frequently - probably every 3kmi.

Mobil (and Amsoil) doesn't use viscosity improvers in their group IV or
IV/V oils.

Oops, I just followed my own link to the FAQ and discovered that German Castrol
is 0W30. It's got great film strength, but I wonder if it might be a bit thin
for the 16v and 500E. I guess you could try it and see what your hot idle
pressure is like. BTW, in the other thread about Walmart diesel oil, I've
used their 15W-40 in my 300SD and gotten hot idle pressure in the 1.5-2 bar
range.

There is Syntec "full" synthetic and Syntec "blend". One sells for a touch
under M1, the other for 2x dino prices. Castrol was the company that started
the whole "synthetic is just a marketing term" fiasco where they started selling
hydrotreated dino as synthetic. I haven't bought any fluid with the word Castrol
on the bottle since. It was my favorite brake fluid up until then.

To answer Chuck's original question, if you are paying for synthetic and
Castrol is what's readily available, make sure you get the GC stuff, which
may be superior to Mobil One. That said, pigs will take flight before I
buy any, no matter how good it might be.

I used Syntec for more than a year. It needed to be changed at 3kmi

always had tons of $800 sets. no one was happy!

here on the north side of atlanta you simply CANNOT find the 15w50 at
walmart because of the all the euro cars. basically, if anyone dunwoody or
alpharetta sees 15w50, he just grabs it all and runs. all that is left is
the lightweight oil.

so the answer is to go out where everyone drives modern ford pickemup trucks
that use super light oil. those walmarts will have no 5w30, but lots of
15W50.

simple, no?

The information that I received when I contacted them was to use the
online stores. The following are sites that they gave me to try. The first
looked like they had a good price on case lots.

http://www.autobarn.com
http://www.eliteetc.com/momooil.html
http://www.mscdirect.com/

When I drove to my nearest Autozone, they didn't have any in stock and
didn't think that they could get any Delvac 1 or Turbo Diesel Truck. They
did have Delvac 1300 which is normal oil as far as I know.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - Pro Trucks Division
No live tv but if you can make it in person, you will witness some
spectacular racing in a new division. I have read that about 20 SCORE Off
Road Trophy
type trucks have been entered! they have up to 750 HP and will likely
challenge the unlimiteds record time. I was planning to be there but it is
not to
be this time.
