Re: [MBZ] Test and possible move to WA
Braindead Island is not inexpensive. Silverdale is no worse than Bremerton, just has a better PR person. All these places need a ferry to get to the big town, unless you want to drive around. The silly boats run on a schedule that does not support too much more than commuting. If you want to make a night of it at the Opera, best to book a room in town, so that you can enjoy the show, have something nice to eat after, then play with your favored wench in the morning before B'fast. Catch the boat home for lunch. Ferry fees just went up again. Since I do not use them, I am not too sure, but think it is close to $10 car and driver each way. The dumb things crash into docks with great regularity, thus reducing your chance of getting home in time. What is wrong with living closer to the mainland? There are just as many places about as far out that cost the same as living in the hillbilly area of the sound. I do know the railroads have to maintain their own right-of-way, while trucks and barges get the government to do it for them. ;) If you really want to get sick wondering why the roads are torn up, do some digging, the federal highway taxes are the cash cow for every politician in the country, whenever they need money for anything, they hit up an attachment to the highway funding bill, you wouldn't believe all the stuff thats paid for out of that. Not to mention that there are donor states that get fewer $ back than they give to the government in tax money. I always figured the reason our roads were so bad in MI is that we were a donor state. A good chunk of our road tax money was going to build bridges to nowhere in Alaska. Ted Stevens may not know much about the Internet, but he knows how to reel in free money for his state. Re: [MBZ] OT: hitches
I stopped at a tractor dealer a yesterday. While the small Minniapolis-Moline caught my eye, right next to it was a 6 cyl Farmall - with a 2-point hitch. So I looked at it, pushed on it, examined the pivots, etc. Two things I noticed: * It looks like the arragement of links could allow for the hydraulics to press down. That is, transfer some of the tractor weight to the implement. Can it do that? That was one of my biggest frustrations with the 3-point blade while doing road work. * It also looks like the hitch pivoted at a point just forward of the axle. If I didn't miss something (it was getting dark...), that means the implement tail would lift much more that the front. A 3-point is usually a parallelogram so the lift would be closer to level. Mostly I'm just curious. It's amazing to me that all the years I've hung around old tractors I'd never known of the clever device... -- Philip, passed on the M-M, 'cause it was gasoline

I have my fingers crossed because I have failed to find a source for what the normal hi and lo pressure should be. I have a request for that information on three websites and still looking. I suspect mine is overcharged but have no idea what it should be. With R134a pressures are higher than with R12. But if it's much over 300 PSI on the high side or 40 on the low I'd guess something is wrong. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] OT: hitches
I stopped at a tractor dealer a yesterday. While the small Minneapolis-Moline caught my eye, right next to it was a 6 cyl Farmall - with a 2-point hitch. My grandfather bought two tractors: A MM U and the Farmall 200. They're both still in use, but not the MM so much. Nice heavy tractor, will out-pull anything else the family's ever owned. Magnificent beast, really. But the Farmall gets much more use because it's much more versatile. The MM is thirsty, and primitive. (No hydraulics, etc.) The new Deere 5-cylinder turbodiesel, replacing the old Oliver diesel, is getting the bulk of the heavy work now. Last use of the MM was to pull the Deere+plow combo out of the mud. The MM and grandpa's Cat were tied off to each other and used to yard trees out of the woods, and to straighten up the barn when it got leaned over in a bad storm. * It looks like the arragement of links could allow for the hydraulics to press down. That is, transfer some of the tractor weight to the implement. Can it do that? That was one of my biggest frustrations with the 3-point blade while doing road work. Absolutely. There's a pin you can pull on the lifting cylinder if you want a floating implement that can be only lifted. (The Farmall's blade, incidentally, is either front- or belly-mount and pushes down, since it's on the forward hydraulics which don't have a float feature.) * It also looks like the hitch pivoted at a point just forward of the axle. If I didn't miss something (it was getting dark...), that means the implement tail would lift much more that the front. A 3-point is usually a parallelogram so the lift would be closer to level. It does tilt. Unless you unpin the front link of the hitch mechanism from the frame and attach it to one of the front hydraulic arms. Then you've got pitch control of the hitch at your fingertips too. (Does require manipulating two levers to keep a constant pitch as you change height, but I don't see that as much of a problem.) Not to mention that moves the pivot point a foot or two forwards, so the tilt effect is automatically diminished thereby. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] 240D Shifter
Brian- I'll try that. So, if it were working properly would I have to pull up on the shifter to get into reverse? Yeah, unless the mechanism is worn (as you suspect). Or is it push down? I think the 4-sp and 5-sp trannies differ in this area. Once I'd gone through the Frankenheap's shifter everything started working a lot better. With the slop in the bushing repaired the necessary actions got a lot crisper. (Heap had a nasty twist in the knob because one side of the shaft was unpinned in the plastic bushing. Really unpleasant to use.) Where is the worn plastic bushing and how do I get at it and fix it? It's socketed in the top of the shifter mechanism, where the shaft holding the knob goes in. I believe there is a collar that unscrews from the top that releases the shaft/pin/bushing assembly. Looks like a 50-cent part that's meant to be replaced from time to time, but isn't necessarily easy to come by! My notes, such as they are, are in http://cathey.dogear.com/frankenheap.html on December 14, 2005. -- Jim

The bases will fit, the seats themselves will fit as well except that I can't say if there will be enough clearance for the original w126 driver's armrest between the seats, without it rubbing the passenger seat... it's pretty wide. I am bound to say, however, that unless you are stuck on the idea of a power seat, I would not trade w126 seats for w123 ones -- especially the late w123 style. I don't suppose it's possible to re-dye MB-Tex is it? You can. Leatherique will do it. It's probably not a real good idea, as the original color would start to show through with wear. [MBZ] OT: Ford Ambulance F/S
Kleb and others: Does anybody want an E450 ambulance? I saw one about 7 miles from my house (mid-michigan) this AM, green on white (usually they are red on white) price on the windshield was 2xxx. Most of them come with 7.3L powerstroke diesel (non-intercooled in vans, no rrom for an I/C in the nose). They cut a van off behind the driver's seat and join the ambulance body up to it, so now the thing has no back wall on the cab. I think it's feasible to put rails on it and carry a car as long as an SDL, but if you extended the cab for back seats or sleeper you probably couldn't get the CG of the car in front of the back axle. I don't know what it would cost to extend the chassis and put a used rollback bed on it, but the total would probably be cheaper than a good used diesel rollback. I don't need any more projects, or I'd buy it and keep my eyes open for an old TransVan motorhome body. (in fact, I think I know where there might be an $800 TransVan right now, about 100 miles north of me) Mitch.

They do have a pre-powerstroke F350 (pickup chassis) ambulance, complete, not stripped, for $1950. This one has the old 7.3 International IDI engine. For $2k that could hold a lot of seats (or a gurney/bed) and tow a car trailer, but I doubt it will get the MPG of newer trucks. http://www.airportautoinc.com/carview.php?view=474

PS: If you decide to buy from Rusty, It's better to call vs. use the internet. Rusty and his guys know their merchandise and have a lot of experience that they'll share. The web site is just the World Pac catalog (same as everybody else used except performance products). Ritchey

Given the evidence of salt etching on the engine etc under the hood, I sure would want to check out the body carefully for rust issues. My 76 looks better under the hood. Re: [MBZ] OM60X low-oil circuit board
At the U-Pull today there is a 190E, and a 76 300D. Unusual in the 115 is that the dashboard is nearly uncracked, there's only one starting at the speaker hole. The speaker grille is not nearly as ratty as most I've seen. The dash is wood-paneled, but most of that is not looking so hot. -- Jim
[MBZ] (no subject)
Was back at PnP today trying to fetch the puegot IP, walked past a 300D. This is a euro model 300D. Engine looks REALLY good. Still complete enough. I was not able to attack it too much since I did not have the tool I wanted to liberate the IP and injectors. Reason for it being in the yard -- sideswipe passenger side (doors) and rust through in the floor panels. 206k miles on the clock, interior is ok, paint on not crunch side old, but no rust. Auto trans, retrofit AC, good radiator and oil cooler, no turbo. I am not going to try to transplant that 617 into Gump, so you who need it, should come and get it.
