I think that that tecnhique will work with the passenger's seat because I got it to go forward once when I wiggled the switch just right (haven't been able to do it since). The driver's seat forward/backward adjustment motor turns, but doesn't move the seat, so it must be in the cable drive connection at either end, so I'll have to get in there to see if I can get the drive cable back into its socket by hand if i'ts even possible. You'll want to ask some detailed questions, such as how they fabricated adaptors for the motor mounts, how it idles (vibration issues), is there vacuum going to the brake booster (I can't make out what is happening there, in the pic), what is the throttle arrangement (no linkages visable, looks like they adapted a cable setup), how is the oil pan clearance from the crossmember (is anything rubbing on anything else under the hood in general), and so on? Also, basically is the thing actually DRIVABLE right now? Or is it a typical project where 90 pct is done and the last 10 pct (all the fiddly/irritating/not straightforward stuff, such as getting working gauges) has been left hanging? Heck, they sell kits for V8 Jaguar conversions, yet notice some time how many of those cars come up for sale, 90 pct done and then left for dead, or driven around missing such essentials as a gas gauge or even speedo. Make sure you get fresh fluids and fuses no matter what the PO claims to have done. Replace the glow plugs and fuels hoses all around. Get new filters for it, that means cabin filter too! Re: [MBZ] I found one!
Her SD tangled with a Jacked up Jeep Liberty with a Pental Hitch on the back. SD took pental hitch thru the radiator all the way to the Block, Busted the timing chain cover. Crunched the Front end to the point it wasn't repairable. Did 12 Grand worth of damage to Idiots Jeep. Teach him to tangle with a SD. Tragic indeed! I hope you do eventually find another one because they are such fine cars. I'm surprised that the Jeep was repaired rather than totaled out at $12K worth of damage! As we were driving the SD home from Albany Oregon 70+ miles in the rain and wind, I was impressed with the handling and stability. It is a sturdy, full-size car that can hold up to just about anything and keep its passenger's safe. Kevin in Hillsboro, OR 1983 300SD 284K miles, Ursula

In reading the web site about the 190, it seems the history of the car included some time as a taxi in Argentina. I did a lot of work in Argentina in the '90s and I immediately recognized the paint scheme. The high end taxis were MB, and the low end taxis were Ford Falcons built in Ford's South America plant. But...they all had that familiar black paint on the lower part and a yellow top. Solder joints internally. I've fixed a bunch of them. Do _not_ skip the step where you use paint stripper to remove the varnish on the bottom of the board. Carefully! Don't do this if you can't solder at least moderately well, the board is sensitive. If you need to, practice on something else first, in other words. Re: [MBZ] Noisy 300D engine
Peter, I would think that the engine may be carboned up and need a good run. However, new injectors WILL be noisier than older ones. Although you may prefer the smoother sound of older injectors, they are not doing them any favours. If you're hearing a nice sharp clack clack clack, then it is your new injectors doing what they need to do. Jeff Zedic Toronto/London

Re: [MBZ] serpentine belt drives
Does anyone know what the maximum allowable out of round dimension is for the alternator, water pump or power steering pump? I am presently getting .2mm on the water pump, .1 for the power steering pump and .1 for the alternator. I am trying to eliminate the vibration on the serpentine belt tensioner. Constantine
Re: [MBZ] 400,000 miles and still ticking
Well, I am sort of going on the basis of the fact that the diesel engine is pretty heavy. It will require quite a boat and so I am thinking displacement hull maybe rather than planing hull. It is not going to put out high horsepower but has pretty good torque which is probably what we want for turning the prop anyway. Diesel can of course be fairly noisy so we will need to put a dandy cover over the motor to keep the noise down. I like the idea but like everything else, it would need some time and money. Re: [MBZ] Headaches
Not true. I got a headache from the throbbing 1980 300D. The 83 and 85 have no such problems and are relatively quiet... despite far greater mileage. I'm not sure what's not true but I do know that my '78 300D was very noisy at speed and it wasn't nailing but intake roar. One design fault was the forward end of the engine air intake was just behind the front edge of the hood. I modified it by moving the aircleaner intake to the side, adding a new 90 deg duct into an Oldsmobile diesel intake muffler and moved the OE intake forward a bit just to the edge of the hood. These two things reduced the intake roar to a more tolerable level. There is a very good reason why later diesels (including the Sprinter van) have their intakes through slots in the RF fender. RLE
[MBZ] Interesting
Just talked to my Indy, I'd been putting off doing the voltage regulator and finally my 190D decided it REALLY needed doing. Figured it was better for him to do it... He says You've got no vacuum which I'd sort of noticed. Interestingly he can't get the car to shut off at all which fits with what I was finding when the car was cold but once it warms up its fine, shuts right off like it should. He says he put his gauge on and got no vacuum on the big line to the brake booster and just 2 on the small line... Whats interesting is that when I drove it over this morning it was normal for me like it usually is, hard brakes until I'd run it up to 3000rpm or so and no problem shutting off when I got there. Anyway, I guess I should put a vacuum pump in it. Fortunately I've been socking away a little cash against this... -Curt - Sponsored Link Rates near 39yr lows. $420,000 Loan for $1399/mo - Calculate new house payment From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Nov 21 21:06:43 2006 Received: from mailout3.parasun.com ([204.174.16.211]) by server8.arterytc8.net with esmtp (Exim 4.52) id 1GmcpG-uV-MR for mercedes@okiebenz.com; Tue, 21 Nov 2006 21:06:43 + Received: from rrcs-24-39-222-124.nys.biz.rr.com ([24.39.222.124] helo=user4ykwxvt62x) by mailout3.parasun.com with smtp (Exim 4.54) id 1Gmcn8-0005R9-3q for mercedes@okiebenz.com; Tue, 21 Nov 2006 13:04:30 -0800 Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Mike Canfield [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com References: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2006 16:04:04 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2869 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2962 X-Antivirus-Scanner: Clean mail though you should still use an Antivirus Subject: Re: [MBZ] Clay X-BeenThere: mercedes@okiebenz.com X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.9.cp1 Precedence: list Reply-To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com List-Id: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes_okiebenz.com.okiebenz.com List-Unsubscribe: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] List-Archive: /pipermail/mercedes_okiebenz.com List-Post: mailto:mercedes@okiebenz.com List-Help: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] List-Subscribe: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com, mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 21 Nov 2006 21:06:43 - Hey my Yiddish isn't as rough as I thought.. [MBZ] Think a wagon is the way to go.
I'm pretty new to the list, and for the most part, sitting back and trying to read as many posts as I can and just soak it all up. :-) After talking to one of my Porsche friends on the list about some benz models, I think I have settled on an E class wagon. I still can remember the chassis numbers, but they are ones that started in the mid to later 80s, then changed body style and ended in 00 I think? I'm just keeping an eye on eBay to try to get an idea of what I should pay. I'd like something with about 80-90K miles, nice and clean and no crashes. I'll keep looking and get back to the list when I narrow it down and see something I like. A friend had a SD years ago, and I loved that car!! I'd like one too, but at this time, I think the wagon fits the bill better. I currenly have an old ford wagon to the pets, guitars and amps around in, so the benz will replace that car. If running an old benz works out ok, I'll have my dad replace his car with a wagon too; anything to keep him out of an SUV. lol. I'll keep you all updated. Zeb

[MBZ] Window Shopping.
As I've mentioned, I'm in the market for an older wagon, but thought I'd do a little window shopping as I haven't been to the dealer in a while. I went to look at the S550 sedan, but while there, they were road testing a new CL550. I have a number of pics off the net of this car, and I can say, while it looks pretty good in the pics, it looks much better in the flesh!! Just a really nice package. Once that car left for a road test, I wandered inside to check out an SLR. It is a real Q ship in that unless you really know what you are looking at, it doesn't really stand out all that much. I personally like the car for that reason, but I would like the interior to look a little richer. Some of the interior parts just look cheap to me. I have seen a few around town now, and they have a great rumble at idle and lower speeds. I haven't heard one really wound out in person, so not sure, but from the videos I've seen of them drive on tracks, they sounds very unique when pushed. The rotors are so pretty, they sould be hanging on a wall in a gallery. Well, that was my day window shopping, so back to reality and looking for that old wagon. hee hee. Take care everyone, Zeb

Re: [MBZ] Think a wagon is the way to go.
123 wagons are up to 1985, 124 wagons after 86. The only federal model with a Diesel is the 87 300TD, of which only a few were imported. You can buy some very nice 300TE wagons from 92-95 or so for $4-5000. I have had both 123 and 124 wagons in both gas and Diesel in each variant. I bought an 88 TE on ebay for cheap, but it has taken a lot of money to turn it into a decent car. In general, the 123s are stately and dependable. The 124 is more sporty, obviously newer, and somewhat more expensive to maintain. an 87 300TD will usually go for $7500 or more because of the rarity. I know this is sacrilege, but i think the gasser is a better value. I am a 35 year inveterate Dieseller, but now, owning both an 87 TD and an 88 TE, i am impressed with the gasser. Of course, the TD is always impressive. Wifey primarily drives the wagons, so it is not too important to me. I still drive my Dissel. After 15 years or so with ALL diesel vehicles, the gasser has been better than i expected. Re: [MBZ] Nailing
Does anyone know what model of Racor filter set up to purchase? Anyone recently install a Racor filter? I've had this issue with my 240D since I purchased it 8 1/2 years ago. 120k miles and a new set of injectors three years ago have not changed a thing. It's not necessarily a steady sound but more random and very annoying. That's why my car had thirteen warranty injector replacements in 50K miles after which I installed a Racor water separator which completely ended the problem until I sold the car at 120K miles. There will now be posted several stuff and nonsense rebuttals to this and my reply will be that my post is based on personal hands-on experience. BTW, as I recall when my car was around, the injector pop-off pressure was 1750psi for the 300D whereas the 300SD was 2150psi, according to my dealer. And I recall that the turbo version was a much more even and slightly quieter combustion sound. I do know that any reasonably experienced diesel driver can tell the difference blindfolded.
