'twould be interesting to know exactly what the requirements are
that make MBZ spec an ATF for their old manny trannys.

It relates to the properties of the synchros.

Here's is an explanation of what Mercedes requires and why by Dr Eric
Chowanietz that appeared on another list about 8 years ago.

 > In response to THE query on a spec. for MB 'Sheet 236.2' manual

transmission fluid here is a summary of the Technical Data Sheet I have for
236.2 oil - supplied by Elf Oil Co. of France.

Elf Trans-O-Matic - Mercedes-Benz 236.2/236.5 and Voith DIWA transmissions
502-2/502-3 specification.

TYPICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Relative Density @ 15.6C0.879
Kinematic Viscosity @ 40C 36.5 mm2/s
Kinematic Viscosity @ 100C 7.1 mm2/s
Viscosity Index 160
Pour point -40C
Flash point 200C

"Applications: automatic transmissions, torque converters, power steering
systems, manual gearboxes and other applications for which a fluid Type A
Suffix A or Mercedes-Benz 236.2/236.5 is specified."

--

Basically, M-B 236.2 is an old-style auto transmission fluid without the
friction modifiers found in Dexron II/III. I tried Castrol Dexron III in my
190E five-speed, but in the winter, with a cold 'box, I got some 'snagging'
when changing up 1-2 and 2-3. I had a discussion with Castrol technical
dept. over this and they said its not so much the viscosity of the oil that
is important, but the friction modifiers. Basically, D-III is a bit too
'slippery' for the syncro's on the MB manual 'box and so they take longer to
lock up than was the designer's intention. They advised using either Castrol
TQ Type A Suffix A or Elf. Since I changed to the Elf fluid the cold change
quality is better. No damage will be done to the 'box by using D-III since
the D-III specification takes in the Type A Suffix A fluid and it is an
alternative specified by Mercedes-Benz - but the 'box won't function quite
as the designer intended. The D-III probably has better anti-wear
properties than 236.2, but then again your're catching the synchro. dogs
every now and then so maybe it evens out?

The reason that you should never use an ordinary EP oil in these manual
gearboxes is that EP oils use phosphorus-based anti-wear additives (giving
the distinctive 'EP' smell). The phosphorus additives make the oil acidic
and quite chemically aggressive to the synchro. materials that MB use.
ATF-type oils, on the other hand, use zinc-based anti-wear additives which
are far more chemically inert toward non-ferrous metals (I have the full
chemical formulae, should anyone be interested!)

For my 190E the M-B recommended change interval for the manual gearbox fluid
is 12 months or 12000 miles.

Incidentally, the spec. for MB sheet 236.3 (the 'special' power steering
oil) is very very similar to 236.2 (the viscosity is just a little less, if
memory serves me). The MB steering oil is made by Elf and I have the Elf
part number for it somewhere - I believe its a lot cheaper than the
MB-packaged version. I just used the 236.2 oil - should be OK unless you
live in a cold climate area (which I don't). My local Elf distributor
wasn't keen to order just a small amount of the PS oil - he doesn't get much
demand for it.

Mobil 1 ATF works better than anything I've ever tried (and I have tried
Redine MTL).

Re: [MBZ] ATF Type A??

2006-12-31 Thread Werner Fehlauer
John - I think you're caught up in an industry change of nomenclature. Back
in the "old days", Ford (predominantly) used what is known as Type F for the
frictional qualities required in their trannys, while almost everyone else
used Type A. Type F is almost unknown now-a-days, so you can be pretty sure
that whatever Auto Trans fluid you find out there is either Type A, or
backward compatible with it. The exception is a much more recent specific
M-B transmission that had its own peculiar oil, but that certainly did not
apply to the '80s and most of the 90s.
Also, I would think that for a manual transmission, you would gain some
benefit by using a light "weight" synthetic, such as 0W-40 Mobil1 - but
that's just my preference.

Dr. Marshall will no doubt have the specifics to corroborate this.

Re: [MBZ] 123 doesn't crank, what to check first?

2006-12-31 Thread OK Don

You should be able to turn the engine over with the power steering
pump pulley nut - to determine whether it's frozen. If not, the
neutral safety switch, starter, solenoid or ignition switch are
suspect. Jumping from the small wire terminal on the solenoid to the
big wire coming from the battery will crank it if the starter is OK.
If that doesn't work, try banging the starter a couple of times, then
trying the jumper trick again. A piece of 1x2 18" or so long and a
hammer will help here. Ground connections to the chassis from the
battery and engine are also possible points of failure.
Good luck!

Re: [MBZ] 123 doesn't crank, what to check first?

2006-12-31 Thread Zoltan Finks

Yes, I hope it's something like a neutral safety switch, or electrical. But
when the 240D I had purchased, and not gotten to use many times yet, showed
me the symptoms you describe, it was a siezed engine.

People told me to look for a broken timing chain and perhaps something
jamming up the camshaft or something like that.

Also was told to look for something jammed into a drive belt pulley.

In the end, in my situation, I think it was a blown head gasket? that had
been left to sit long enough that rust took over in one or more cylinder? At
any rate, there was an abundance of rust in the radiator. (I had bought the
thing sight-unseen).

Re: [MBZ] 115 Dash Clocks`

2006-12-31 Thread Jim Cathey
Working on getting a working clock into my 115 and have come across
two OE

VDO clocks. My question is. One is a VDO Kienzle and the other is a
VDO Quarz-Zeit. What is the difference between the two? Is one more of
a mechanical (ticking) clock?

Exactly. Other differences: the quartz clock is likely to still
work, the mechanical one is not. The quartz one is a royal b**tard
to open, the mechanical one opens easily.

Also what would be an easy way to power them up for a test should
I not have the car available to pop them into.

Hook +12V to the spade lug hanging out the back, and ground to
one of the mounting screws. Monitor for correct timekeeping.

The quartz clock is unlike modern ones with a stepper motor in them,
it's more akin to the old wall-powered synchronous motor clocks. Except
in this case it's driven by AC sourced from a divided-down quartz
oscillator. So it'll sound like a small motor quietly running.
'cause it is. Unless it doesn't. Then you don't want it. Unless
you can get it open. Did I mention that's very difficult to do?
You have to peel back the crimp on the front chromed bezel sufficiently
far to get the bezel off, but not so far as to impede putting it back
or screw it up cosmetically.

I tried to install a quartz in Gump, but the pin
out for posts was wrong.

Que? Both of my 114/115's are now sporting quartz clocks, and didn't
come that way.

I am not too sure why the heat comes off and on in the habitat. Once
the car is started, the heat works fine. It is a bit later that the

it be the heater temp. sensor or? Any suggestions?

Has anyone suggested the monovalve insert yet? (Just got back to 400

[MBZ] MBZ history?

2006-12-31 Thread Werner Fehlauer
I apologize if this has been cussed and discussed, but I've lost the bubble
as to the sequence of events (and perhaps a bit of reasoning) behind how
these "nets" have transfigured themselves.

I am aware and dismayed about how the original technical (and leader's list)
net that had more or less the blessings of MBCA were summarily closed in the
"Saturday Night Massacre", and how Kathy Kennel (RIP) did her best to keep
some civility in the succeeding mbz nets. But it appears that there are now
a plethora of nets, that IMO have reduced the content we used to have -
where a lot of technical issues arose daily, and usually 6 or more responses
appeared almost within hours.

So what historical events have I missed??

TIA

Amen, Hans! But I suspect that the proper capitalization of the name will be
lost on most people. Just like "coke", "Kleenex", "Zerox" have become
synominous with a class of product, making the first letter of a person's
name is beyond hope, it seems. But I will do my best to keep the capital
"D" in Diesel!

Other examples: Volt, Ampere, Hertz, Newton, Pascal, etc.

Knocked a vacuum line loose. Maybe at the keylock or at the IP or just
anywhere else.
Besides, its Diesel, not deisel (just in respect of Mr. Rudolf).

Re: [MBZ] todays crackhead

2006-12-31 Thread Steve MacSween
Ah, Hendrik, let me be the one to explain that posting links to bizarre
eViLBaY items is a proud tradition that originated on the former mbz.org
lists. Kaleb was its most enthusiastic (but by no means sole) practitioner.
I am especially fond of its near cousin, making fun of people who choose
enthusiasm over skill in their photography.

Happy New Year

as long as they are not just huge, all you have to do is attatch them to
an email and send to the list.

If some one out there would accept these photos, I will try to send these to
you so you could post them on the list.

Thanks.

It's right in Hillsboro, so I would be more than happy to go check it out.
Heck, I'm hoping someone beats me to it so I'm not tempted to buy it!
