Re: [MBZ] OT: Imperial Co-President

2007-01-28 Thread LT Don

You mean the Secret Service agents? That isn't an entourage, that is
government policy. All of the wives of ex-Presidents (living and dad -- the
men, not the wives) have such protection.

At least Hillary's campaign team paid the $3000 rather than using government
funds!

I'm trying to remember if I saw protection when Senators came thru town
during the 2004 election cycle. Don't think they rate Secret Service.

Ironically, speaking of having an entourage, Vilsack came to our high school
for a meeting a few months ago, while he was still governor. One (and only
one) Chevy Suburban, him in the right front seat, his wife and his assistant
in the back, and one Iowa State Police officer (plain clothes) driving the
Suburban.

No black helicopters, no snipers on the roof, just one Suburban and one
driver/guard.

Nothing much, the 280TE was the top of the line wagon for Benz, so should
have all the bells and whistles like power windows, cruise, wood
console/dash and other bits and pieces found in the 280's.
Ecxpect to get 15l/100ks when tuned properly and running on good fuel, other
than that the 110 motor is pretty bulletproof if the maintenance has been
done.

P.S. Are you on the Ozbenz forum? http://forum.mbspares.com.au/index.php
It is more focused on Oz and NZ models than the Yankee lists.

75-80 mph. I had been looking at $2-3k W126/OM617 when I found the
1979 W116. It's quite peppy around town, I wonder if the pre-1980 cam
has more low end torque than the 1980-85, or if the lack of EGR helps
 that much?

Make sure there is no rust around the front sway bar mounting! I think
Proper disabling of the EGR makes a difference, but I believe there is a
difference in transmissions and rear axles as well. 27mpg sounds about
like what I got out of my 84. BTW i forgot to mention, I'd rather be hit
in ANY mercedes as compared to any VW (at least prior to the last
generation or two)...

I was rear-ended in a 126... maybe 35mph, I was stopped. The left side
trunk pan tore loose from the frame, the rear doors chipped paint off
their back edge and the body due to sudden excessive intimacy, the sunroof
popped open The inside of the trunk... well the bottom liner was torn
loose on the front edge (where it was hinged) and pushed forward about
4-6. I remember thinking that the spare might need to be deflated if it
were to come out... The rear bumper was pushed in hard (the forward ends
of it were definitely down. Oh yeah and I still could drive it home (75
Miles, I waited 90 mins for the Leesburg cops, wasnt gonna wait another
90 mins for towing to boot!)... When I got the trunk open (Yep it opened
right up), I was unable to re-close it because the lid had spring back out
enough that the latch tab was outside the rear panel of the car.

Did I mention that I was uninjured?

Did I also mention that the other driver's rearview mirror came UNGLUED
from the glass (his head did not hit it...) and smashed itself on the
dash, breaking plastic bits off of it?

I'll take a Benz any day coming or going. Period. Lots of people will tell
you that a car just gets you from point A to point B and that You don't
need anything that fancy... yeah a car gets you to point B, but the
hidden assumption is that you are alive to get there. THAT is the REAL
primary job of the car--to keep the occupants safe in an unsafe world
WHILE getting you from point A to point B. Comfort and style is nice (well
comfort--driving from full to empty on the tank without javing to stop for
a walk, is a good thing, IMHO), and fuel mileage is great, but Geo Metro
XFIs got great mileage (54-58 I want to say), but would you want to be hit
in a car that is made of plastic?

Anyhow

I agree with Hendrik. Up here in NZ, you hardly ever see these wagons
for sale.

Mine is insured for $ NZ9500 but as the salesman/valuer said, I could
only expect to receive that from someone who was already keen on classic
Mercedes wagons. Until I had it re-assessed for agreed-value insurance
purposes, my insurance company figured it was worth about $NZ3500 - 4000
tops. Needless to say, revaluation was essential, to avoid the insurance
company writing it off in the event of minor panel damage.

Fact is, no-one knows what a good model is really worth. A good
indication, however, is that every time I attend a car- boot sale
(trunk, for you guys down there), there is more interest in the wagon
than in my goods. Also get about 2-3 inquiries on average on and off the
street each year. Mind you, mine's a reasonably tidy example.

Cheers

That's funny, brian! It would take a bit more to disable a mechanical

by opening the hood and yanking a handfull of wires.

Or by pointing a toast the circuits gun at the car. I can't wait until
they get a production model in the hands of the same cops that would Taser
a 80 year old for wandering in the street in his pajamas, or fire 200 rounds

I've been tempted to go to one of those 'gun buybacks' where they trade

oh, hell, i'm not even going to look at vista until i have to. as
long as the one or two things i have to do on windoze can still be
done on XP, that is the end of the line for me. I imagine i have at
least 5 years.

I've found Vista to be lacking critical HW drivers for HP Tablet PCs,
and have had it lock up (or just get really slow) a couple of times.
It's not ready for prime time yet, IMHO.
