it really belongs to my kid to do work at her mom's house, but i kinda like the idea of putting in two batteries and having 7 hours of computing power. i've been working on it for about the past hour, and it's pretty solid. the cheap aftermarket power cord was endlessly cutting me off from electricity (a bad thing when you have no battery), but i little duck tape seems to have fixed that to as good as factory. the original optical drive having died, the seller gave me a giant old iomega cd-rw usb drive (almost as big as the pismo) that runs great. both the belkin pcmcia card and the verizon card are functioning flawlessly. like all apple products of this era, the pismo just oozes quality. it's a hell of a lot of laptop for $150 On 3/3/07, LT Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Kleb thinks pismo is what you do when you wake up at night and walk to the bathroom. Lookin' good there, Don. I have downloaded the program and will start using it. A suggestion for those with kids / family spread out like mine [Antigua, San Diego and moving to Alaska, Atlanta, SC moving to VA]: the free Skype online telephone program and a cheap web cam [$13 including shipping on eBay] lets you see and talk to anyone anywhere in the world with the Skype program for free using your computer microphone and speakers, or a headset. We got our first views of our quite pregnant dughter over it and chatted with her while watching her cats play around the room. One of our friends used theirs to watch, hear and talk to the grandchildren as they opened Christmas presents. Nothing but good to say about it so far. You can use it as a camera-phone to any computer and they can type responses back if they don't have a web cam or a microphone. The program lets you know how many others are making calls at the same time - usually @ 4 - 5 million. SO of the child in Antigua uses it for all international long-distance calls at his business, though calls to a regular phone do have a cost - but far cheaper than normal telephone calls. We are sending web-cam's with built in microphones to our kids. . Re: [MBZ] *Almost* makes me want to move to NY State
Andrew, Although I fundamentally agree that you get what you pay for, you may not want to pay for some of the things you are receiving in the northern states, like: Expensive road repair Snow removal Tons tons of salt 4 layers of government at 1/3 more cost (NY has 4, AL has 3) Olympic size swimming pool in your local High School (mine had one) I've lived in both states for years the list could go on. Now, for the benefits I remember loved that are not available in Alabama: Great state, county, township village parks. Wonderful summer temperatures. I'll probably think of more later... The real difference is two fold. The first is the horrendous cost of road repair snow removal. In NY, road repair often requires excavation, sometimes down below the frost line. I remember sections of road being closed for weeks months for repair. In Alabama, they just scrape off the road apply new with paving machines. If more extensive repairs are required then they are taken care of during the paving process at little additional cost. We get very little snow in Alabama. The second is cost of government. Alabama has 3 layers of government - State, County City. New York has 4 - State, County, Township village. Can you explain why NY has 4 layers of government other than it's always been that way? The third is cost of social services. I'm not saying that NY State is wrong here but NY State believes that everyone has the right to enjoy what the State offers and as a result, everyone pays through their state taxes. If you don't ever use the state park system then you can sleep happy at night knowing that a portion of your tax dollars are being spent for someone else to enjoy the state park system. If you are happy with this system then by all means, sign up to it. Alabama is more of a pay as you go state. Alabama has a wonderful park system, but you will pay a few dollars when you drive into the park. My kids went to the best High School in Huntsville. Both were in music programs we had to buy their instruments pay for any trips they went on. When the choir room needed new chairs a piano, we had to raise the fund to purchase them. The down side of a pay as you go state is that our sales taxes are high when compared to some northern states (8% in Huntsville) and we pay full sales tax on food, but I'll trade high property taxes for higher sales tax any day. Last year, my property tax was $460.00, and that was for the entire year! My house is worth about $130,000. [MBZ] Notes from the field: Center tie rod fiasco
So, I'm changing the earl on the TD last night, and think to myself, why don't I just go ahead and finally RR that sloppy center tie rod. I ordered one from Rusty, probably two years ago. The car's been pretty squirrely lately--the incorrect offset on the 17 rims really exacerbates suspension issues--so I go for it. Throwing caution to the wind, I grab my pickle-fork and hammer away at the ends, thinking nothing of the damage I'm doing to the ends. Turns out, the joints on the new tie rod are larger than those on the car--wtf? A'yup, I check the website, and sure enough, I missed the mid-year chassis split--FAWK Now the car's hosed and I need it tomorrow. If anyone needs a 124 460 12 05 (later chassis), just let know--I'll make ya a kill deal. Just remember to check those chassis numbers, ffs.

Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Center tie rod fiasco
I should've put more thought into it, when I first realized that the nuts on the new part were 19mm and the ones on the car were 17mm. The joints on the tierod point up, so I couldn't really do a thorough inspection from under the car. It's actually a real bitch to get a wrench on those nuts, too. It was a silly mistake caused by 'sheer' hubris; It's an easy job. What can go wrong? Whudda dumbass On 3/4/07, Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just remember to check those chassis numbers, ffs. [MBZ] Inspection in PA to NY, NY is a joke
Tony, Inspections in NY for diesels are $10 yearly, as diesels are exempt from the emissions inspection as is my '76 450SL gasser, whereas PA is quite a bit worse than this. Since Rochester (Salt City) has many swiss cheese vehicles on the road due to the excessive use of salt here, something one cannot get away with in PA as one has to get rust holes repaired in that state in order to pass inspection. Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Center tie rod fiasco
the new part were 19mm and the ones on the car were 17mm. Oh, that's always a bad sign! One place that didn't hurt was on the Frankenheap's recent 450 SEL fan transplant. The old fan was held on with long 13mm head bolts, the 'new', with clutch, was heald on with short 10mm head bolts, yet the threading was the same. -- Jim

[MBZ] Rousting Rusty, or new muffler for my '87TD
Bit of an odyssey over over muffler replacement. Ordered new one thru Tom at Rusty's about 3 weeks ago. WoldPac muffler as delivered was a useless pos. Rusty stepped right up and issued a call tag for return all the way to Atlanta so he could show the thing to his local WP rep. He also offered to get me a new OE muffler for just a few bux more than the offending unit, which offer I accepted with some alacrity. New muffler installed yesterday is identical to the unit it's replacing leaving me a completely happy camper - at least I will be as soon as I see a credit for the returned pos on my card statement. http://jsknight.googlepages.com/wagonmufflerpics Pics of both are to be found thru the above link. About the only reason to download the pdf is to be able to see the notes I've appended. What they point out is that the 1st bend in the inlet pipe is at the wrong angle rendering the thing useless even were I otherwise inclined to live with such an abomination. Point I want to make is that, unless WP cleans up its act in this regard, anyone looking to replace a muffler would do well to stick with OE, and not even just OEM. -joe
[MBZ] Engine Mounts Engine Stops
Howdy - Getting ready to change my front rear motor mounts on my '78 240D w/290k miles (123.123) w/AC. The WSM talks about making a tool to adjust the Engine Stop - I have never heard of this before - what does it do and should I make the tool or just position everything like it comes apart? Any words of wisdom before I start this project. BTW, when I removed the engine to rebuild it I released the engine support arms from the engine mounts and lifted away - never realizing there is a Engine Stop needing adjustment. The rear mount seems to require adjustment of the engine stop also. Lately I'd had a lot of noise while driving - it sounds like something is vibrating against metal - it didn't used to do this I strongly suspect the MMs. But I'm not sure about the Engine Stop Adjustment. The mlount on the passenger side went very easy but the drivers' side is much more difficult - hard to reach the inner bolt. Anyway - hopefully this will cure my noise problems. Anyone have any comments?? -- TIA - Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ .
Re: [MBZ] Engine Mounts Engine Stops
The front stop is only on the fours, and you can fabricate the tool or just measure to get it correct. Flat mounts will allow the carrier arm to bang on the bucket of the mount, quite loud. I had to cut a metric allen down to get the one screw out, the standard length is impossible to get in. Sawed some off the short end, then cleaned the burrs off. Make SURE it's all the way down before attempting to turn it, if you strip the screw, it's MUCH more difficult Peter
