Re: [MBZ] 87 300TD Fixer

2007-05-18 Thread Rick Knoble

No rodbender. No wiring harness problems. Ac evap is a PITA to
change. '87 300TD's are one of the Holy Grails of Mercedes
dieseldom. It is the only year diesel 124 wagons were imported. It
is also the only year that particular engine was imported in the 124
chassis. Very powerful.

OK so assume the head is trashed. I suppose a replacement could be
scavenged from somewhere -- how much $$? Can that piston be changed
out with the engine in the car? Would it be better to just try to
find a complete donor engine?

'87 heads are the 14 heads and are prone to cracking. Replacements can be
purchased used from salvage yards, eBay and perhaps our list sponsor Kaleb.
I believe the latest update on that head is a 22 casting number. New heads
can be purchased from Rusty. I think you can change out the piston in the
car, but that question would be better addressed by some of the other list
guru's. Replacement engine? ask K'leb

Thx, Jeff, but I already got mine. John is mulling that prospect, but
it's my possibly mistaken understanding that the MB factory hitches
weren't exported to GB. IIRC, there's a thriving market for aftermkt
hitches on Brit ebay. Shipping's probably a major hitch to bringing
any of those things over as they are pretty heavy, plus unless you've
got a contact on the ground near where you're buying from you've got
to convince a potential seller to jump thru the extra hoops involved
in pond hopping.

Re: [MBZ] Postage Rate Increase

2007-05-18 Thread Christopher McCann
uh...Jim...rethink. It's a postal INCREASE. In the past, the increase was based
solely on weight, they did not care the dimensions, now they do. Your price
went up and I realize that your package hasn't changed, but you have no idea
how to account for the $1.55 difference. It may be solely the weight of the
package (they charge MORE for the same weight...that's an increase) and it may
also be becauase of the DIMENSIONS of the package...that was never a
consideration in the past.

For example. a letter in a standard envelope under 1 oz WAS 39 cents. It is now
41 cents. the letter hasn't changed, the rate has. Another scenario. That same
letter in a 9x12 envelope WAS 39 cents (weight based only), but now is MORE
than 41 cents (don't know how much more, but it is more than 41 cents, I know
that) because of the DIMENSION. Get it?

This weekend I might be going to look at an '85 300D. According to the owner
it drove great last fall, then wasn't started for a few months and now
struggles above 40mph.
I'm thinking water/algae in the fuel and a shot of cleaner and new fuel
filters should get it going again.
The pictures look good, very clean, no obvious rust.
She's asking $1500, I'm thinking if it looks in person like the pictures
I'll offer $1000 and see what happens.

Actually, I think there have been extra charges for odd/oversized
letters for some time. Not sure what the exact limits are, though.

I do recall having to put extra postage on a greeting card envelope
several years ago, not due to weight but to the dimensions.

I think it has to do with whether the dimensions are such that the
automated equipment can't handle it and it kicks out for manual
sorting.

It's been overimproved, to say the least. The poor guy's reserve price is
probably 5 figures... Sadly, it has no sunroof. It might be better if it
were a really early VIN, e.g. 0 - 25.

Still, someone may pay a lot since it is so spotless.

The trailer wiring harnesses here are a lot different than North American
ones. It's a big round plug, approx 2 inches across and sits to the right

the hitch. My new Audi A4 TDI manual has a factory hitch! VERY nice!

Is that all that's wrong with it? It might also be something broken in
the
throttle linkage that limit the accelerator, or a bad vacuum control

that disables the turbo.

[MBZ] Off Topic Hybrids

2007-05-18 Thread Donald Snook
My wife told me she really likes the Ford Escape Hybrid and may want to
sell/trade her Explorer to get one. I am a little leary of hybrid
technology while it is still so new. Does anyone know anything about
the reliability? Or the cost to replace the batteries when they will
inevitably need to be replaced. I read an article that talked about
the fact that with the cost of the batteries all the fuel savings is
gone. Any information would be great.

2007-05-18 Thread Levi Smith

I don't know much about the Escape in particular and I tend to steer clear
of most American vehicles. They're usually good enough but from my
experience they're not as reliable as the Japanese stuff.
Still, overall from what I've seen, in terms of cost, if you're planning on
keeping the vehicle for 100K miles or more there's a good chance you'll make
up the difference in fuel cost compared to the extra you paid for the Hybrid
part. If you're only going to keep it for a few years and maybe 60K miles
it's kinda doubtful that you'll recover that fuel cost compared to buying
the cheaper model. You just don't generally get THAT much better mileage
compared to the extra cost. Make sure you're aware that you will NOT get
the mileage ratings on the window for city and only the highway rating if
you accelerate slowly and keep it to 45mph... They are changing the ratings
now to make a bit more sense (especially in regards to hybrids that might
complete half the test without ever starting the engine, but not getting to
the point of having to recharge)and the Prius is about to lose around 12mpg
in the city rating.

As for batteries, that's going to FAST becoming more of an issue in my
mind. I've been watching the Honda list lately as the Insights were the
first around 2000. And as expected, the batteries last around 6 years it
seems. Honda seems to be doing pretty good and for the most part replacing
them for free even on a 7 year old car with 178K miles on it. But I'd say
you could expect to pay somewhere in the $500-3K range if and when your
batteries die and you decide to replace them.

I haven't really heard any reliability problems with them other than the
same thing with pretty much ANY battery in that it's hard to make them last
more than somewhere around 6 years...

I *LOVE* the idea, but there are a lot of caveats with it. I'd love to pick
up one of the original Insights that ACTUALLY got 70mpg on the highway.
That could be done for like $6K too... It would still get near that mileage
if the battery pack was toast too. Unfortunately they've more or less got
it tied into the system so that if the battery pack gets completely useless
there's no way to charge the normal 12V battery that would run the
electrical system...

I agree with you on all points. The technology is still not proven
over the long term. Battery replacements every 5 years will be a
source of recurring unhappiness. And what about the environmental
impact of producing and then disposing of those batteries?

As I posted the other day with reference to the TDI, the actual $$ you
will save on fuel will be fairly small and eaten by interest on the
note, opportunity cost of the new vehicle, higher insurance, etc. etc.

And what of all the environmental impact of producing all that

AFAIK they just compile average purchase price data from public
records of title transfers. So that should take into account the
sheer joy factor too.

Now that I say that, I remember that it's a common practice for
private parties to under-report the actual sales price on the title
paperwork to lower the sales tax burden of the buyer. So that could
skew the numbers down somewhat.

This sounds just like my 300SD with a plugged see through filter.
Take a couple with you, they are only $2 each.

That same letter in a 9x12 envelope WAS 39 cents (weight based only), but
now is MORE than 41 cents (don't know how much more, but it is more than 41
cents, I know that) because of the DIMENSION. Get it?

I've been mailing several 9X12 envelopes weekly for some years and the rate
has always been 68 cents be cause it's oversized. How are you using 9X12 and
paying #10 envelope rates?

The 1980 300D I owned for 2 years was anthracite grey with a sienna (reddish
brown) interior. Now that was a combination looked great.

Tow it a block or three, out of sight of the PO. Bring the
seethrough filters, but also bring a couple of main filters. Change
the filters, then drive it off. Having to tow it off will gain you
more than the cost of the tow. Chances are it has algae in the tank.

The hp rating on the 24v OM606 with variable intake tuning is 14x.
The hp rating on the 12v OM603 turbo (1987 D and SDL) is 14x.
The '87 W124 is a little quicker than the NA W210, but not by much.

perfect, exterior is VERY nice (except for lots of rock chips on front
bumper - remainder of the paint looks great). MB tex interior cd
