Re: [MBZ] Thrumming Gump
Fan is direct and newly installed when the water pump died a few months ago. Did a tighten up for the new alternator and belt a bit after that. Good wild guess Took her for a ten mile drive to replicate. Not able to get her to do it again. Might be related to the high rev buzz in the transmission. Going to drain and replace fluid and see if that impacts buzz and keeps thrum away as well. Got home and up on the ramps. Wiggle under and get coolant in the eye. THAT hurts! Seems one of the heat exchanger hoses was dead. Found some oil leakage around the oil pan. Grab the hex set and give each pan bolt a tweak back and then tight again. We will see how that works. Grovel around the bins of parts and snip off a bit of hose and install, then fill a few liters into the radiator. No leaking now. Got too dark to go on, so will have to tackle the thrumming. Re: [MBZ] Off Topic Hybrids
The Insight actually did get better mileage on the highway. The Prius does not. I don't know about any of the others, because I think they have stopped really using hybrid technology to get better mileage. They seem to be leaning more toward a higher performance out of a smaller engine direction now. My brother has a 1999 or 2000 Insight and does get roughly 70 mpg on the highway without really doing anything. I almost wonder how tough it would be to buy the electronic/computer portions of a hybrid and pop it into my 300SD. I've certainly got room in the trunk for the batteries. Upgrade the brakes to use the regenerative braking, and drive. I'm sure it would be costly and more difficult than I could actually do, so I won't. Chris On 5/19/07, Ralph Morton [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- LarryT [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As far as the cost of barrery replacement, take a look at http://hybridcars.about.com/od/hybridcarfaq/f/batterycost.htm which shows the batteries may cost $3000 and up to replace. As far as mpg's are concerned, I've heard and read the same as Kaleb is saying - hybrids excel at stop go city driving. Steady highway driving is better in a diesel but it doesn't get much press because of the wide-spread prejudice against diesels. As most on this list know, diesels get 25 to 30% better mileage than equivilent vehicles. If everyone converted to diesels we'd cut our need for oil by that same 25 - 30%. Of course, that's unlikely but it will help as more car companies bring diesels into the US. I believe Honda and Toyota are preparing to start selling them. BTW, did you know diesel is the primary product in refining oil? Back in the late 1800's gasoline was a by-product that had few uses until internal combustion engines were perfected. They had one of the veeps from Chevy on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! doing the Not My Job part today, and he was talking about a concept car that Chevy plans on bringing to market shortly called the Volt. It will have roughly 40 mile range on batteries, and a small internal combustion engine that will take over after that. Granted, they're looking at a commuter style vehicle, as most of the hybrids are intended to be, but it sounds interesting. RM Never miss an email again! Yahoo! Re: [MBZ] OT: Aww man...
Yeah you're probably right. In fact I wonder a little if the battery might not be causing the problem we were having. The bike would run but would then periodically just quit, like you'd shut off the key. Run the bike more often (like ride it to work 2 days in a row) and it wouldn't do it for a few days. Ride it less and it'd do it 5 times in 5 miles I wonder if the battery would decide to not take a charge and heat the stator or something goofy. I'll still look for the short though Stoopid battery is only 2 years old. The one in my bike is the same age and is just fine. -Curt Date: Sat, 19 May 2007 15:33:19 -0700 From: Jim Cathey [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Aww man... On my calculator, -- = 1.647, so it's about 65% better. You are right. How I came up with that percentage is beyond me. Which makes those gas engines of the period look even worse. THAT's quite a change in tactics! Diesel engined cars have always been *more* expensive IIRC. Unfortunately, the CLS with diesel power is not offered here currently. Re: [MBZ] Which diesel?
Unless it's a complete model change, I don't see why you'd wait a year for the bugs to be workes out. The ML270 CDI has been out for over 5 years here. That is not the V-6 Bluetec offered in the R, ML and E-Class. I think the only vehicle sold here with that engine is the Sprinter van. [MBZ] OT So that's ebay
We had our first ebay experience tonight. Decided to register with ebay and jump on and bid on a car as the auction was just about 15 min. from ending. We didn't plan to jump in at the last minute, just worked out that way. I'm sure it irritated some people, or maybe it happens all the time. Seems, though, that a number of people wait 'til within the last minute, maybe the last 5 or 10 seconds and just one-up any competitors. I imagine that there may be some people that know from experience that, based on their computer, and on the number of bidders, that they can put in their bid with, maybe 3 or 4 seconds left and leave anyone else unable to respond in time. Kinda harsh, but what should I have expected. Brian

You tell them the auction number, how much to snipe for, and how soon before the end of the auction to submit the bid. I usually do it manually, about 10 to 15 seconds before auction close. Craig

Not a detail kind of cleaning where each spoke is waxed and polished (I'm thinking wire wheels at the moment) but in general chrome can be rinsed with the hose and 99% of the dirt comes off. Non-chrome surfaces can have tiny crevices that collect stains and trash making them tough to clean. YMMV of course. Re: [MBZ] Diesel vs gas mileage
So, what then does CDI mean as in 320CDI starting in 2005? I thought we were talking about gasoline. CDI is a common- rail DI engine. Those have a single high-pressure fuel supply rail and gate-valve injectors, solenoid actuated I believe. Those have been around awhile. The OM352 in my Unimog is direct injection. MB has made both DI and IDI engines forever. The solenoid control of a CDI engine allows for multiple small fuel pulses at idle, resulting in engines that idle nearly as quietly as gasoline engines. What they choose to sell in the USA is all about our charming marketdroids and not about the the technology. As a datapoint about the industry, it is useless. -- Jim

Turns out he has a 6.6 liter Duramax with a PPE Turbo charger (or two?). Claims some 6 or 8 hundred h.p. with some 1400 lb. ft. And claims a 0 - 60 time of 3.5 seconds. [MBZ] Question for list about 300TD fixer
Check out this listing (someone else posted it here last week also): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=140119061737 Scroll down to the photos, there is a picture of the center console showing a yellow rocker switch. Is that something that is factory? Looks a bit out-of-place. Also I note that the center pushbutton on the ACC is missing. Also it looks like something had been mounted to the passenger side of the transmission hump -- old-style car phone maybe? I think the only sane approach to bidding on this is to assume that the motor is trashed. So what's the rest of the car worth? Allan -- 1983 300D 1966 230
Re: [MBZ] CDI?
So, what then does CDI mean as in 320CDI starting in 2005? Common-rail direct injection. But, we are talking about gasoline direct injection here. And those '05 diesels for the US market were not Bluetec technology. There was a C320 V-6 Bluetec sold in the UK about that time, according to an enthusiastic road test article in Mercedes Enthusiast. RLE ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

The yellow rocker switch is definitely an aftermarket switch some hack put in the console. RM Yahoo! oneSearch: Finally, mobile search that gives answers, not web links. http://mobile.yahoo.com/mobileweb/onesearch?refer=1ONXIC
Re: [MBZ] 300SL DI?
... next year when MB's direct injection engines appear. They are a little late to the party, as usual. The party that started in the 50's with the 300SL? Wasn't it DI gas? The 300SL was the first gasoline FI but if you can quote a reliable source that says it injected into the combustion chamber, I'd like to read it. I can't find one. In any case, today's gas DI increases power and torque while reducing consumption and emissions. Look at the numbers regarding the new Cayenne V-8 DI engine as just one example. If nothing else probably all the regular maintenance has been neglected. -- 1983 300D 1966 230

I've entered bids on items, and been immediately informed you've been outbid. I'm not sure how they'd break a tie of two bidders with the same maximum, probably by whoever placed it first. Where to begin?? the were no non-turbo's in 84 so the engine has been replaced by some cheap bastard. Looks like the guy spent at least $20 in silver spray paint in the engine compartment. News to me that MB OM617.95X blow head gaskets as a matter of course.or that the turbo is expensive to replaceseems like he's scare-mongering to justify the dog non-turbo engine he put in by mistake.
