[MBZ] Suspension Pump Repair

2007-06-16 Thread Trampas
I finally order the correct O-ring for my leaking suspension pump on the
1991 560SEL. I took some pictures and wrote a how to that I have sent to
Kaleb such that he can post it somewhere.

Note I called a couple of different Mercedes experts and none of them knew
anything about the hidden O-ring on the suspension pump. They said that they
replace the one o-ring and shaft seal and if the pump still leaks they order
a new one for $1200 new or $800 rebuilt.

When I replaced the hidden O-ring all my leaks stopped. Of course it took me
some time to find out where to order the O-ring and actually get it, but the
$0.80 for the new O-ring verse $800 makes well worth the wait.

 Cosmoline.

 head smack

I couldn't remember the name of the stuff at the time.

You can probably find this or something similar at an
industrial engine supply house, or possibly a truck
supply place that would deal with industrial engines
 like pumps or compressors.

Cosmoline is pretty heavy duty stuff, and not
something I would put on a working engine or engine
compartment. It's meant as a moisture barrier and
 intended for long term storage.

On a related note, there are some really cool things
that aircraft engine manufacturers sell now for long
term storage on Lycoming and other air-cooled aviation
engines. They're plastic tubes that screw into the
spark plug ports, and inside the tubes is a dessicant
that absorbs any moisture that might form in the
cylinder while the engine is mothballed. I'm sure you
could use them for long term (such as winter) storage
 on an automobile engine, too.

It's an assembled unit (not made by a major
manufacturer) consisting of a Wisconsin VD4D (I think)
diesel engine and an unknown alternator.

Wisconsin engines are pretty bulletproof, so it's
probably a good deal for someone if they can get it on
the cheap. Probably no larger than 10-12kW, based on
that engine.

If I keep the 190D down to 65mph it'll do 43mpg pretty reliably. If I

Alot of people think slowing down is bunk but in most cases it really
does save fuel. On my commute I figure I save $6-$7 a week. Might not
seem like much but thats ~$312 a year.
Plus if I drive slower I find that I don't get there alot later than
I would have (couple minutes maybe on my 55 mile commute) and I feel
more refreshed and less stressed when I do arrive.

Re: [MBZ] selling cars on ebay

2007-06-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
Sunil,

You'd think so but it's not quite true.

With home sellers, those who sell a few items:
Even eBay has limits to what they can charge before they chase off
customers. Plus there are other on-line auction sites that are just waiting
for eBay to stumble and some of these sites process a reasonable volume of
on-line auctions.

The fees that eBay charges may seem high but when you consider the market
exposure, the fees become very reasonable. That is unless you sell a $10.00
item on eBay that you can easily sell locally for $10.00. When pricing for
eBay sales, you need to factor in the additional cost make sure that the
expanded market exposure will support the additional selling price. In other
words, that $10.00 item needs to sell on eBay for $12.00. If you have
something unique, collectable or not likely sold locally then you should do
well with eBay. Most sellers don't understand this ask too little for an
item or they try sell common items that really have no business on eBay.

With retail sellers:
In addition to what I stated above, retail sellers usually have their own
web store and possibly a retail location. With a business, it's more of a
cost verses gain calculation. In my case, I'd have to hire another Employee
to generate the sales that eBay generates. EBay marketing costs less!

By the way, we have 2 on-line stores, one on eBay the other a on-line (non
eBay) store:

Hi Kaleb,
Speaking of selling cars - do you ever sell cars at local auctions? We
have a auction 2x a week not far from here - there's others in the area
also - but this one is open to the public and I expect a lot of local used
car dealers buy cars there.

Any experience there? I have a Van with a Wheelchair lift - pretty limited
market - that hasn't gotten much attention in the local paper, shopper or on
AutoTrader.Com. Some will say its overpriced but it's exactly in line with
similar vehicles - plus, it has a value to me which I won;t go below. The
engine is super - I could pull the engine and save it for the Cobra I hope
to build some day. Then try to sell the lift seperately - but I'm just
thinking out loud.

My question is what do you think of local auctions?

I do not often sell cars on ebay but sometimes I do. From what I
understood it was $40 to list a vehicle and that was it. Today I get a
deal about selling a vehicle for $1 for 2 days only. So I check it out
thinking I will put a car on there just for the hell of it. I get to
reading and it says you pay $1 insertion fee then a $50 transaction fee
at the end?!?! So I get to reading the regular fees and insertion fee
is regularly $40, and you have the $50 transaction fee at the end. So
it costs $90 to sell a car on ebay?? Anybody know if this is
something that has changed because I swear any other time it was just
the $40. I thought $40 was expensive but $90, that is insane. And I
thought just the fees for selling other stuff was ridiculous.

I bought a used Dell C400 on eBay in 2003...it has been a trooper. I've
worn out 3 hard drives, a battery, added memory, and multiple docking
stations (one at the office and a couple around the house...don't ask)
upgraded from W2K to XP (it still has the sticker on it that says Designed
for XP), and it keeps on going. I like: the small size, light weight,
bright screen, Dell support...even for a non-warranty machine. I don't
like: low powered USB 1.1, 9 pin serial port, no keyboard or mouse support,
but those are all functions of the age of the machine. It was built during
the transition period between old serial and new USB. I also bought a used
Dell C400 for my daughter on eBay...same story.

My company issues us Lenovo T60s. It's been bulletproof as well, and I like
having a second drive bay. Took me a while to figure out that the hard
drive is a SATA but I hadn't kept up with what they looked like. Given that
I was previously strongly anti-IBM (stinkPad, anyone???) I have been
pleasantly surprised.

So where is Maine did you go?

 Curt Raymond wrote:
On our recent vacation to Maine I kept it to 65mph at almost all
times and my Dodge Dakota 5.2 v8 turned in 20mpg which is pretty good for
what it is. Day to day around town its more like 15.
If I keep the 190D down to 65mph it'll do 43mpg pretty reliably. If I
hold it to 80 its more like 37mpg.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology

2007-06-16 Thread Gary Thompson
I beat the crap out of an IBM T-series laptop, doing over 250K airline
miles going back and forth between Dallas and Tokyo over a 1 year
period. Loved that laptop. Can't seem to keep a Dell going for more
than six months these days, and that's without all the travel. I've
told our IT guys over and over that it's false economy to buy the
Dells, but the corporate guys just see the initial $$$ and think
they're saving money..

Hands down the most durable laptop I know of is the IBM/Lenovo
T-series. These are the laptop equivilent of a early eighties benz,
just plain solid, I have had about five of these over the years
(corporate and personal) and they are nearly indestructable. NOTHING
wears out, and I carry mine around all day bumping it around. Tons of
peripherals and add-ons are available from IBM, and the software
support (drivers, BIOS updates, etc) are easy to deal with. Best part
is you can get a refurbished one from an IBM reseller on ebay for
pretty cheap and it will still have a 3-year IBM warrantee. I am
pretty sure the refurb units are corporate fleet returns that have
little to no use, the two personal units I got had absolutely no signs
 on use at all.

If you really just need a basic word processing, email, office diesel
benz type system I recommend a T42 or similar, I bet they are under a
grand for a decent one. If you want more oomph (450sl) then get a T62
 or similar.

Jim and all,

The new Silver Stars do have a shorter rated life, but 1 year of light use
should not take one out! I would jump Sylvania on it.

Or you can step up to HID. I just went to HID (4300K) on my ML which used
the H7 55 watt halogen lamp for low beams. The ML lenses diffused the light
so well that it was often difficult to tell if they were even on.
The HIDs light up the Botts Dotts on the freeway with an incredible flat
beam! And they are legal in all states!

The HID uses just 35 watts and gives 3 times the light and 10 times the life
of Halogen. The HID Kits are available for nearly all lenses using
replaceable halogen bulbs. My set was just over $100 delivered from an Ebay
dealer.

I first installed a pair of HID lights on my dune buggy over 4 years ago.
My eyes were getting old and I needed more light than the four halogen lights
I was running. What a difference! The white light makes shadows on the
dunes a 1000 feet away. The Off-road boys run as many as 8 of these and their
investment runs in the thousands, just for good lighting. The design of HID
seems to permit them to take a lot of pounding without failure. There is no
filament, just two pins that energize the gas in the lamps.

Just my $0.02

Re: [MBZ] headlights query

2007-06-16 Thread ernest breakfield
Jim,

i think if you look into it further, you may find that while HID
lights are legal in all states as installed by the vehicle
manufacturers, there are no HID 'upgrade kits' that are legal in any state.
that said, most of the H4 Q-H lights aren't legal either, but that's
due more to the archaic DOT regulations than the fact that the HID
'upgrade' kits don't put the source of the light in the same place that
the original bulb did, and that the reflectors weren't designed for HID
light sources.

of course you can buy approved HID Fog and/or Driving lamps and
mount them separately, but regulations on use of those varies by state
as well; fortunately for those of us who travel, you only have to comply
with the regulations of the state the vehicle is registered in.

cheers!

Re: [MBZ] Commie Cars, was Re: well they showed up with the bags

2007-06-16 Thread Hendrik Riessen
In Saigon you can visit the presidential palace and in the basement there is
a finnie, which was used a staff car. There is also a Huey parked on the
roof which was used by the then president to go for rides around the place.
Also there is a couple of T 56 tanks parked in the garden, not the real ones
that broke the gates down (one of the real ones is in the army museum in
Hanoi). However you can still see the tank track marks in the bitumen near
the gates.

Don't know about China but there where quite a few MB's (mostly C and E
class, 124's, 201's and 202's; I did see one 123 and one 116) in Saigon
 and
a lot of MB vans (some of which are made in Korea) and most of the
 transit
buses are MB powered. So MB has quite a presence in Vietnam. I would
 guess
that there is about 5-6 MB's for every other luxury brand.

One of my favorite lines in the movie The Killing Fields about the Khmer
Rouge takeover of Cambodia is Mercedes... Number one.
