I saw an R400 in the flesh for the first time a couple of months

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2007-06-25 Thread Jim Cathey
I cleaned off the vacuum pump in the solvent tank, that took a lot of
scrubbing! (It's a lot cheaper than using brake cleaner, which is for
the things that can't make it to the tank.) I did use brake cleaner
to sluice off the solvent at the end, but that doesn't take much. I
squirted a bit of oil into the bearings, then installed the vacuum
pump, I reused its (paper) gasket. It's much easier to put the pump
on if you rotate the engine to a low point in the pump's cam cycle.

That was so much fun I then vacuumed off the injector area and used
brake cleaner to clean off the worst of the gunk. I vacuumed out the
intake ports, and used fingers and rags to try to get off the worst of
the caked-on EGR slime. That was messy.

I then used a screwdriver to wedge the throttle on all the way and
cranked the engine. I got little fuel fountains out of all (I think)
of the injector ports on the IP. I'd wanted to do that to make sure
it was primed, and to make sure to blow out any junk that might have
gotten down in there. I used brake cleaner to hose out the injectors
themselves.

The valve cover and its gasket then made the trip to the solvent tank.
The gasket, once cleaned with a scrub brush, seemed very good and was
still quite pliable. I installed the valve cover using the old
gasket. Another quick round of brake cleaner followed to clean off
the solvent, etc. I'm down to my last can of the case, and am trying
to conserve.

The engine's starting to look pretty good! I laid rags over the
intake ports and the injection pump to keep out dust. I think it's
just about time to make a parts order, I need an intake manifold gasket,
the rubber blowby manifold parts, the injection line clips and bumpers,
and two brake reservoir grommets.

Does anybody have a photograph or description of how the manual
transmission 601/602's throttle damper attaches? Craig sent me
a nice picture from a 617, but it turns out that it's completely
different on this 602. I think that I might be missing a bracket
or something that carries the upper stationary ball joint. I
didn't see any place to put a ball joint on the IP body itself.

[MBZ] Tappet noise - and oil level compared to W123

2007-06-25 Thread Zoltan Finks
Question: Does the rule apply here as it does with my 240D - the one
that says do not add engine oil until the level gets down to the add
mark (in other words, don't add when it's half way between the full
and add marks?)

Now I have another thing to turn more hair grey. When I start the
engine, I hear the tappets knock (hope that's good terminology for a
diesel). And the oil gauge takes a lot longer than I want to respond -
maybe some five seconds. When the gauge does respond, the engine idle
slows a bit maybe, and the tappet noise lessens.

Now, I notice that there seems to be a tappet noise constantly as it
idles in my driveway. Unless it's an exhaust leak, but I doubt it.
I'll drive it and see how long it persists - maybe is lessening as the
engine warms up?

I appreciate all advice here - these are big questions in my mind as I
hope this is not a lemon.

Are you using Mobil 1 oil (at least 5W40 or 15W-50 - NOT 0W40)? Have you
replaced the two O rings on the oil filter cap stem recently (they
last about 20-30 kmi)? If the answer to both of the above is yes, then
your engine is worn and you MIGHT want to consider lifter replacement of
any that are TESTED and shown to be bad. If the car isn't driven or run
for a long lime, lifter noise will usually be louder until the engine is
run at 2000+ rpm for 5 minutes or so.

Thanks John - that is exactly what I need to see. I had suspected, and this

On a 1992 600SEL it takes 15 minutes to RR the oil filter including
removing the Air Filter Box, MAF and finding the Mercedes oil filter
wrench/socket.

Changed plugs today - 30 minutes. Back is screaming in pain from being bent
over the motor. I KNOW that isn't on my list of rehab exercises from the
doctor. As long as I can stand straight by the time the wife gets home from
work I'm golden.

Changed the transmission filter last week. That took two hours. An hour
longer than normal. Got stuck on the ground and couldn't get up.

Nice cars. We have one. Amazing car. The motor has 402 hp not 386. It goes
from 0-60 in 6 seconds.

In town it needs to be driven in 3rd else the motor never gets over 1300rpm
and carbons up the motor. Unfortunately the carbon gets into the oil system
and plugs one of the touchy lifters. Sea Foam seems to have cleared it up.
Car has Bio-degradeable wiring harness's under the hood as well as the ETA
that have potentiometer issues as well.

Depending on where the car lived you may or may not need an evaporator.

In addition to the wiring at 99kmi plan on doing the rear accumulators,
trans filter and hoses.

At 125kmi start planning on doing the timing chain, valve stem seals and
guides.

Oh yeah pulling away from a Red Light when it goes green STILL puts a smile
on my face. It's the 70's all over again but with air bags and ABS.

2007-06-25 Thread Curt Raymond

Brian,

Your 190D should have a sensor to tell you when the oil is low. On mine its
still above the add line when the light comes on. Since its a new to you car
you probably don't know if the light works or not so keep an eye on it at
first. But yeah, don't add until it NEEDS it.

My 190D made hellacious tappet noise when I first got it, noisier than my 240D.
Now after 30,000 miles of Mobil 1 15w50 its really very quiet. Change the oil
ASAP and get some sample kits from Larry. Sampling will tell you whats going on
in the engine. Mine 190D was way badly sludged up when I first got it. Early
samples had way high iron levels. Samples now are normal.

Have you changed the oil yet? If not, do you know what's in the crankcase?
For all you know, it could be something slightly thicker than water which
would explain the problem. There are MANY out there who don't use Diesel

I agree - although I'd like a MB SUV with a diesel engine ;-) - that V12
W140 is at the top of my list when I win the lottery - until then,
fergetaboutit. Way to expensive maintanence IMHO. And I'd prefer a W140
over the newest S class - the design of which I find odd.

There's a similar car in local newpaper 93(?) 600SEL with bad engine LOL
course, dropping a diesel 2.5 turbo would be interesting - not fast, perhaps
not economical because it'd be running in turbo mode constantly, but it
would be cheap to maintain - engine-wise at least - that bio-degradable
wiring harness is such a scream! But perhaps they meant well. LOL

They're asking $500 OBO - Hey!! I've got a 89 van that won't sell (has
wheelchair lift) with a 5.0L V8 - that would be nice in that 600!

Subject: [MBZ] ,92 600SEL

OK - I see that many on the list would love to have that MB SUV. No
interest personally, as I am quite happy with my 300SD and don't need such
 a
thing. BUT, what does make me drool is something like this:

 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemih=005sspagename=

 ih=005sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AITviewitem=item=150135362950rd=1,1   -
not for me, but for my darling wife. 98k miles and I am sure everything
 is
just like they say - near showroom... OK, I'm not that gullible. I also
notice this same car sold on eBay just a few weeks ago. Wonder what
happened? The left good feedback for the buyer, but still have the car.

Donald - I still plan to buy that 300SEL you have if it is available, but
 I
gotta tell you, if this one were to stay within a reasonable price range
 I'd
jump on it - and probably regret it later.

No, evidently for their used car pre-sale service they send the car
across the street to K-Mart for the oil change. Had a generic filter
and what seemed to be 0W-20 in it (owners manual calls for 5W-30).
When I drained it it was like brown water running out.

There was a lot of clatter on start up, a certain amount of which is
considered normal for this engine but after I installed the OEM

Bottom line is, unless YOU put it in, or you COMPLETELY trust your

[MBZ] OM603 Intake Manifold

Are there any tips/tricks to getting the intake manifold off of an
OM603? I've managed to strip the hex heads on the top of #1 and the top
of #6 (only stripped one hex bolt before this... sigh). There are also
two of the bottom bolts somewhere in the middle I can't seem to get to.

Thanks!

Curt,

I recall an early 90's MBCA driving event at Summit Point Raceway in
WV... One member drove one of these on the 2 mile road course for
time trials.. We used a sundial to time him!!
He took all the heat we could give him and just smiled!
On this one, seems a little pricey but could be a great weekender for
the hills..

Take care,

Re: [MBZ] OM603 Intake Manifold

2007-06-25 Thread Loren Faeth
If you have already stripped the allen sockets, try taking a 1/4
allen 3/8 drive socket and grind a taper on the 6 faces. Just a few
thousandths on each face. Pound it in with a hammer and a long drift
pin or extension. Get a hammer driven impact driver and put a long
extension between it and the allen socket. Set the impact driver to
the unbolt position and hammer away with a big (2-3 lb) hammer. I
have found the manual driver and a hammer can work better in some
cases than air driven rattle wrenches.

Depending on how bad the heads are stripped, you might try pounding
in the 1/4: allen without grinding. it is about .013 larger than the 6mm.

Before stripping the heads: Buy a long (6) ball-head allen socket
from Snap-on. Put a 6 or so extension on and use the hand driven
impact wrench. The long ball allen lets you get around some
obstacles. Snap-on because they have it and will replace it if you
break it. Snap-on, because they make such an animal. Plan on
waiting a week or so to get it, because the local guy most likely
does not stock it.
^' because some of the heads are too close to the manifold to get in
with a short allen socket.

the large hammer blow often works better to loosen stuck bolts better
than multiple fast blows of a hammer weighing ounces in a rattle wrench.

Anyone who ever worked on a honda 305 motorcycle knows the
drill. Soft phillips bolts, torqued a lot, and sometimes rusted or
filled with loctite.

Good luck

Loren

Re: [MBZ] Tappet noise - and oil level compared to W123

2007-06-25 Thread Zoltan Finks
Okay, appreciate the answers. After driving around for a couple hours
and pulling back into my driveway, there is a lot less tapping.

I agree - I should change out the oil. The seller says he had it
changed with Castrol 15W 50. There is a Master Lube sticker in the
windshield the corroborates his claim of having it changed, and a
receipt that says customer oil discount.

Despite the cheapskate in me, yes, I should change the oil soon.

I guess the question that remains is: those of you who have 190Ds, how
long does it take for your oil gauge to respond, and how long to reach
the 3 bar mark? Not a crucial question, maybe, but I would like to
know.

Takes a few seconds for the gauge to come up on all my cars with gauges.

Replace the o-rings, they are very likely rock hard. I've done mine
twice now in 100,000 miles. You can check the tappets next time you
have the valve cover off -- if you can collapse them by hand with a
screwdriver (pushing straight down beside the cam loe) they are shot.

With Mobil 1 in the engine it seldom takes more than a few seconds for
the oil pressure to peg the needle. With conventional oil and with bad
O rings on the oil filter cap stem, it could take 5+ seconds. You
can't use conventional oil on an OM60x engine after 100-150kmi and NOT
have a lot of lifter clatter.

Mobil 1 is FAR superior to group III oils like Rotella and Castrol
synthetics to quiet lifer clatter.

Re: [MBZ] Tappet noise - and oil level compared to W123

2007-06-25 Thread LarryT
I had a lady call me Saturday asking about an Oil Analysis kit - seems
her 2000 Chrysler 300M's engine has a 1 dia hole in the block. She bought
it 2 years ago from a Chrysler as a Certified Pre-Owned Used Chrysler
which had th 120 point checklist and she bought the 2 year warranty which
expired the 1st of April.

Like you, she said the oil was like colored water when her mechanic
drained it.Naturally, she wanted to have it analyzed to see what it
would tell. I tried to explain that the hole in the block was more
explanatory than a test - but the test might be helpful if she takes legal
action.

I agree with the comment about being cautious if you don't change the
oil yourself.

It's very hard to find people to trust your sometimes very expensive
car. A friend took his almost new trunk back to the dealer for 12k service
and put spots of White-Out on various drain plugs. When he picked the car
up he checked the drain plugs and none were disturbed. Not the Rear Axle,
transmission of sump.

When confronted, they claimed ignorance, said it must have been a new
guy and gave him a coupon for a free service. Awful big of them.

I've never taken my cars anywhere for service and been as happy as I
would have been had I done the work myself.

That's the way things are now a days. -

I do not find any of the new Mercedes attractive or interesting. The
S-class just looks blah, about like a Honda or something.

 They're asking $500 OBO - Hey!! I've got a 89 van that won't sell (has

[MBZ] Fwd: 190e 2.6 won't start

2007-06-25 Thread Troy Kocher
Listers,

I need some advise on my daughter's car. Several weeks ago she complained
her 1990 190e 2.6 w/ 7, (I think it's actually about 15, but that's
another story) was not wanting to die when she came to an idle. By the time
I came to inspect it the problem seem to have resolved it's self, and I
couldn't reproduce it. The car has sat for 2wks, and I went out to start
it this morning and it won't start it just cranks. I checked and it appears
I'm getting spark so given last week's issues I'm thinking it's a fuel
problem. What should I look at next? Fuel filter? Pump or pump relay?
What should I evaluate next? This is the first issue I've ever really had
with her car and I'm kinda at a loss. All my previous cars were/are
diesel. I'd appreciate any advise. .

Also does anyone have access to an online parts manual?

Only a few stripped bolt heads, John? That's nothing. I had to use a

removed the intake from the old rust belt albatross. Bit of a pita

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 190e 2.6 won't start

2007-06-25 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Dump some fuel into the engine to see if it fires, do it carefully and get
advice if you have not done this sort of thing before. The fuel pump relay
is a notorious troublemaker in the 190E's. Can be found behind the battery
and can be taken apart to check soldering, although trying to find a crook
solder is a needle in a haystack job because while the solder may look good
from the top it could have issues underneath. The relay is not cheap new so
make sure it is the culprit, you can get S/H ones but they may be just as
dodgy.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 190e 2.6 won't start

2007-06-25 Thread James Zavesky
Had a 1989 E320 wagon with the same problem. Previous owner ran a wire from
the battery to a switch he mounted in the floor by the drivers seat that
then went to the fuel pump. Yanked his Rube Goldberg system out and put a
fuel pump relay in. Car started and ran fine.

To test the fuel pump run a long heavier gauge wire from the battery to the
pump to see if the pump is good. If it is see if it works with the key in
the run position, if not - change the relay. Buy the relay new from Rusty,
getting stuck sucks especially for the daughter.

I have the EPC - send your request OFFLIST to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The bolts on one of mine were almost loose
the bolts on another were tight, but came loose.
The bolts on the third needed the cold chisel/ fire wrench/ impact

I have not tried the 4th 603 yet.

Joe's method is one I have used lots of times, but not on the intake
bolts. Came pretty close though...

2007-06-25 Thread Jim Cathey
Are there any tips/tricks to getting the intake manifold off of an
OM603? I've managed to strip the hex heads on the top of #1 and the
 top

Make sure (next time) that you clean the hole thoroughly and tap the
bit in good with a hammer. I've also heard that putting a bit of grit
on the bit first helps it keep from camming out and ruining your day.

My 602 bolts all came off easily.

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

If you find the bumpers, let me know. When I called Buy MB Parts to
 order
all the injector line clips, bumpers and brackets, Tom said the
 bumpers for
my car (190DT) were NLA. If you come up with a suitable alternative,
 (inner
 tube?) let me/us know also.

If they're NLA, it'll be two pieces of inner tube rubber glued
together. That's about the right thickness and texture. They're

If they're NLA, it'll be two pieces of inner tube rubber glued
together. That's about the right thickness and texture. They're
just a bit of rubber with a tit sticking off the bottom to poke

just tack them down with weatherstrip cement instead.

Thanks Jim. I will do that then. I wonder why a seemingly common item would
be NLA? The bumpers appear to be the same for all OM60x injector lines.
Whatever. The kids insure that I have plenty of inner tubes around.

Depending on where the car lived you may or may not need an evaporator.

In addition to the wiring at 99kmi plan on doing the rear accumulators,

At 125kmi start planning on doing the timing chain, valve stem seals and

Re: [MBZ] ,92 600SEL

2007-06-25 Thread E M
I have to say, I really like the new S Class. I looked at a new one, and
also the coupe. I think there was a big step forward in build quality over
the last S, from what I could see in 20 minutes anyway. The previous one,
(the one after the W140) was cheap junk to me. You could see the spot welds
through the paint on the ones I saw on the inner door. I ran my hand over
one once and cut my finger!! I thought it was a one off, but then looked on
other cars, and saw the same quality. I also found it really
uncomfortable. The only thing I don't like about the new S is that AMG seem
to be going a little overboard with the add ons. Are they trying to woe the
kids who buy Honda civics? Glad to see they are getting back on track with
quality. It was kind of sad to watch them over the past several years.
Now, if they could just get that proper thud in the doors back. :-)

he doesn't take off about $36k worth of Italian carbon and fiberglass

 How's about Dupont Circle?

 no genies here

 Funny story:

Was in D.C. on business some years back. Took
 the
family along to make a working vacation of it.

Walking down the steps into the Metro station on
Columbus Circle, my youngest (about 4-5 years
 old at
the time) sees some Sikh guys in their native
headdresses and shouts out, MOM! DAD! LOOK!
 Genies!

 My response:

I think they're having a convention here this
 week.

 grin

Re: [MBZ] Klima, Again

2007-06-25 Thread Jim Cathey
'Nother question: Can anyone remind me which terminals to jump in
the Klima relay socket to power the compressor for testing?

It's the usual relay terminal labeling, with extras. See:

Re: [MBZ] Ferrari vs. Benz

2007-06-25 Thread E M
See, what everyone needs in a nice old Lamborghini LM002. Big honk'n 4x4
with a Countach V12 in it. It only does about 130 mph for all that HP, but
it doesn't really care if it's on pavement or over a sand dune, it will do
130 over or through most anything. :-)

and then he does, but to creep over the speedbumps in the parking lot so
he doesn't take off about $36k worth of Italian carbon and fiberglass
and aluminum and whatever. I go get in the new 300SD and decide to
check out those speedbumps. Roll over them at a good clip, hear
whumpwhump and that is about it.
