For that 'soil' you need to do what we do in many parts of the FL Keys. You
dig out a hole about the size of a pot and fill it with dirt. Drainage is
less a problem with coral than it is with heavy clay, though.

Most of the plantings at the home we built in Wisconsin died within the
first year. Because we were on a bluff at the shoreline, the ground was
heavy (and I mean HEAVY) clay. You could dig a hole, pour a bucket of water
in it, and it would take literally weeks to drain (if the water didn't
evaporate first.)

I kid you not, I bent a shovel blade when trying to dig a hole in the stuff.
I even used a hydraulic power auger to drill the holes for my deck footers,
and I had to hang on the top of the auger arm to force it into the soil.

Check the soil -- if soaked, you will have to find a way to get the
water to drain. It should be damp, not full of water. Do not water
unless the soil is quite dry and the leaves droop.

Not sure if this is an open question to the list, but for what it's worth,
 I
use Mother's brand products, mostly the liquid wax. I find it goes on,
dries and comes off easy.. I don't think it's the hardest or longest
lasting wax, but I like to wax my cars for fun and to relax, so that's not
 a
big issue. And, it makes the cars smell nice. :-) I may try something a
little harder and longer lasting once winter arrives. For leather, I LOVE
Eagle One leather care. I've used it for about 15 years now and I think
it's great! I use Armoral too, but I try to use it sparingly and will
 often
cut it with a little water if I can't find the low sheen stuff.

So, what to believe? I err on the side of caution and only reset mine

I called Husky (Stanley) and the said that it was only available in sets at big

The problem with the 123 set up is that the little
  wheel spins on the little

shaft and what happens when you press the little
  reset button while moving
is that you put extra pressure on the little wheel
  which spins on the little

shaft and eventually the little shaft turns but the
  little wheel does not
and then you have to take the instrument cluster out
  and do a very fiddly
job of repairing the little wheel so it turns with
  the little shaft again.
Far as refuelling goes, nothing wrong with doing
what you do if there are
plenty of service stations along the way but I would
  not recommend it when
you are not sure about fuel avaiability. I realise
  the situation over there
is different to what we have here but a golden rule
  when driving in the
outback is to have enough fuel to get to not the
next fuel place but the one

beyond that. Reason being that sometimes a small
  outback fuel station may
have shut down, run out of fuel, or have another
  reason for not being able
  to supply fuel.

Resetting the trip while moving hurts nothing. The
  real issue is that a
small plastic part inside disintegrates with age.

And as far as filling up when almost empty, I do
it all the time. I burn
about 2 tanks of fuel a week filling up when I
have to means I only have
to stand in front of the pump twice a week, as
  opposed to 3 or 4 times a
   week.

Re: [MBZ] Clean, I'll show you clean

2007-07-19 Thread E M
Hi Larry,
It has a very nice smell, and mild, but nothing added things to make your
car smell like the beach or a rose patch. I use to us Lexol or something,
and what I didn't like about it was, if you got a drop of rain or water on
it, it would leave a mark. I think it started off as a saddle hide food,
and a friend of mine who rides told me that it can be hard on the stitching
too. Eagle One is rubbed in with your hands and the extra just buffed off
after a few minutes. If anything, I'd say it smells like unscented
handcream.

Not sure if this is an open question to the list, but for what it's
 worth,
  I
use Mother's brand products, mostly the liquid wax. I find it goes on,
dries and comes off easy.. I don't think it's the hardest or longest
lasting wax, but I like to wax my cars for fun and to relax, so that's
 not
  a
big issue. And, it makes the cars smell nice. :-) I may try something
 a
little harder and longer lasting once winter arrives. For leather, I
 LOVE
Eagle One leather care. I've used it for about 15 years now and I think
it's great! I use Armoral too, but I try to use it sparingly and will
  often
cut it with a little water if I can't find the low sheen stuff.

[MBZ] 300TE problems

2007-07-19 Thread Loren Faeth
Aside form the intermittent ignition problem on the 380SL, now the
300TE (88) has developed 2 possibly related or unrelated weird
occasional problems.

Twice, while making a left turn, it has died. After coming to a
stop, with the shifter in P it will restart, no problem, and all is
fine The incidents were about a week apart.

the first time, a couple hours later, the transmission didn't want to
shift out of first. Fortunately, that was close to home. The next
morning, the car ran ok.
The second time, today, both happened at the same time, on the left
turn. SWMBO drove the car the rest of the way to work in first.

Any ideas? Are these in any way related? Overvoltage relay or some
such thing? I didn't think there were any electronics that affected
the trans other than N and P switches.

The ignition problem is different than the 380, because on the 380,
when the ignition fails, it is dead until the car cools off. I think
that is the ICM. Will test the theory when I get another ICM to
swap. The TE seems to be something different, very intermittent.

I finally found out what the problem was! Last month I posted a

pump and it has a hole in the side of the pump the size of a quarter and
another hole the size of a 'bb' on the lower right side (against the
engine). When I tilted the pump a few ball bearing rolled out of the hole. I
am suprized because my car only has 220,000 miles on it. Within a week or so
I hope to have my parts and a few specialty tools for installation. I'm sure

[MBZ] Seat refinishing

2007-07-19 Thread LarryT
Just read an interesting article about refinishing seats. SOme of you have
talked about Leatherique, etc and some other methods - this article says the
leather seats are treated very similarily to the paint on the body. For
instance, severe problem areas are sanded to reach good material. Also, the
seats being restored are in a 1991 Porsche 911. The leather was painted
originally and coated with a clear coat to keep the leather from
transferring to your pants. Deep cracks are filled with a filler which is
flexible and permanent and lasts for years. The painting must match the
original color and is then clear coated. The piping is painted also - by
hand much like pin striping.

Anyway, that's the short version.I get this magazine on CD from a frined
but it may be 6 months before he sends it to me. But at that time I can
probably share it a little easier to anyone interested.

Later ya'll

Re: [MBZ] Way too much OT?

2007-07-19 Thread Zoltan Finks
For what it's worth coming from a relative newbie like me: I think OT
is a good thing.

I realize, though, that it can annoying for those without a system like gmail.

For me, it is very much about commaraderie (sp?) with those who share
similar interests (well at least one interest - I'm not sure how much
I really have in common with most of you you successful old timerss
who know how to work on cars). I have been known to leave notes on
windshields of Benzes telling them about this list. Well, I did this
in SE Minnesota where these Benzes are very rare.

I am this way with my dog interest too - I feel all Doberman owners
have something very strong in common (the trials and tribulations of
trying to live with these hardheaded beasts).

So yes, I probably do need to get a life. In fact I know I do. But I
don't think the OT hurts the list too much.

I strongly recommend just signing up for gmail, and letting the OT
flow! It is really interesting – even helpful at times. How else would
I know that people actually employ goats for weed control?

want to socialize through a computer? that's what IM programs and
 Chat Rooms are for!
so bored that you rely on an e-mail list for your entertainment?
short of getting a real life, try browsing through the many web forums
available on the 'net; odds are if a lists activity is your idea of
entertaining, you shouldn't find it too difficult to find something that
will help you keep yourself entertained.

sorting by Subject line and deleting entire threads is what i tend
to have to do with this list; sadly, i have to do more of it for this
list than any other i've ever seen. the Signal-to-Noise ratio here is
pitiful, but i keep sifting through it for the little gems of wisdom
that occasionally (albeit increasingly all too infrequently) come through.
the fact that so many here don't seem to be able to change a Subject
Line to something relevant to the topic being discussed only makes it
more difficult to sift through the substantial chaff here, and only make
it harder to glean any relevant info for themselves or others.

 cheers!

Re: [MBZ] 300TE problems

Check the kickdown switch for a short -- this will keep the tranny in
first much longer than you want to push it, although it WILL upshift
(near the redline mark, or about 35 mph on that car, I think).

Dying on a turn left only sounds like a bad wire or defective crank
position sensor (on the rear of the block). Could be another wire
shorting out, such as a bad coil wire or coil to distributor. Also
check the cap and rotor -- these are known for defective rotors and a
left turn could be causing a problem (although why only left would
affect the rotor doesn't make sense).

Is this for a W123 or a W124 chassis? The W124 PBU is all solid state,

The thermocouple on the W124 is a thermistor, not a switch.

Most people don't go to china for high quality, high priced items, but
if they did, they'd likely find manufacturers willing and able to match
 most quality specifications.

A friend of mine, third generation owner of an airgun dealership, got
this great idea to bring back the Crosman 160 and 167. He met with an
airgun manufacturer in Shanghai, they settled on the specs, and production
began. They made barrels of incredible quality at first, but quality
declined as they refused to replace the tooling used to rifle the
barrels as it became worn. There were certain steps he insisted be
undertaken in assembly, which they refused to do. He also insisted
on top quality seals, which they refused to use. But that would
make it cost more Do it, and I'll pay more... but it never happened.

He finally had them ship the metal and wood parts to him in California
and he built the rifles himself with US sourced seals and careful hand
fitting of the parts. Then Shanghai ramped up manufacturing and sold
cheap versions of his design to other distributors. I bought a box
of five knock-offs for $195 when he was selling his rifles for $85ea.
I took them apart, had him rebuild the valves to his standards and
bought proper urethane seals from him, and fixed the triggers while
I waited for the parts to come back from California.

OTOH, I know another fellow who has high end bicycle frames built in

Re: [MBZ] quality, was Brake Lines

2007-07-19 Thread LWB250
In the late 80s and early to mid 90s, I used to do
business in Kaoshuing and Taipei, Taiwan.

Their ability to do knockoffs of darned near anything
you could bring them was nothing short of amazing.
The guy who was next to my customer was a specialist
in making milling machines. You would see these big
vertical and horizontal Cincinnati mills sitting on
pallets in front of his place. They had been
purchased out of country and shipped to him to copy.

I stopped in and talked to the owner one day. He told
me that he could make a copy of one of these machines
in about a week, and it was difficult for the average
person to tell the difference between the real one and
the knockoff.

They had good Rolex knock-offs, too.

Re: [MBZ] Odo reset 190DT

2007-07-19 Thread Hendrik Riessen
However it is good practise to only reset the tripmeter when the car is
stopped, particularly on the 123 chassis.
A good driver shouldn't be fiddling with reset buttons while they are
driving anyway.
I know, I know, most drivers do anything but drive. They do things like read
the newspaper, talk/text on the phone, do the nails, fiddle with the stereo,
eat/drink, have sex, etc, etc
Then when the big bang occurs they come out with the old I only took my
eyes off the road for a second, which is all very nice except for the dead
kid who was just chasing his football.
I don't know the situation over there but here the authorities are busy
dumbing down the laws to take into account peoples stupidity. Some roads
around town you can only 40k's an hour and getting caught talking on the
phone is a couple of hundred bucks. There was just a case where someone got
fined for talking on his hands free because the police deemed pushing the
talk button on the phone was illegal. Kinda stupid when you consider that
you can fiddle with the radio all day long.

Re: [MBZ] Chinese quality, when needed

2007-07-19 Thread Tom Hargrave
My 2 cents (ok, maybe $2.00) worth.

I have a set of wrenches in my tool box that I've owned for over 25 years.
They are Chrome Vanadium steel, have served me very well over the years
were made in China. My great grandchildren will be using these cheap (but
high quality) wrenches because they refuse to die. I wish I knew who made
them - they have no name brand but they have a very durable chrome plating,
are marked with Chrome Vanadium and Made in China. I bought the entire
set from a retail outlet that is no longer in business.

I've split more Craftsman sockets than I care to count I've broken 2
Craftsman ratchets - at least they replace them for free.

I twisted the end off 2 Great Neck 1/2 drive breaker bars (VW rear axle
nuts / 200 lb feet of torque) - Auto-Zone also replace them for free.

I've worn out several dozen Philip tip flat blade screw drivers.

I've damaged my share of fittings with worn out tools.

My overall experience with tools?

Buy tools made of Chrome Vanadium steel, regardless of the manufacturer. Buy
sockets ratchets breaker bars from local suppliers who will replace them
on the spot - you can't wait for one to come in the mail if your car is
sitting on jack stands in your driveway today. Never use a worn out tool on
a fastener - it's never worth the damage.

Oh, and we currently import chrome plated beer towers beer faucets from
India the finish is absolutely perfect, better than the product we buy
from stateside manufacturers.

Re: [MBZ] [OT] Chinese planes.

2007-07-19 Thread E M
I just finished reading a book by the guy how was pretty much behind the
design and building of the 747. While working on the 747, he was in China
and noticed what was pretty much a copy of their then 707. The idea was
that China wanted to make their on inhouse plane. I believe it never left
the ground. Japan made the tail and other parts for the the SP version of
the 747. The book made for a very interesting read, not only for those
interested in aviation, but also, a look at some pretty impressive
management skills!

Anyone how is willing to buy planes has an involement in that they get a
say as to the final specs. I think the 747 pretty much exists because of
PanAm at the time. I think Japan will play a much larger roll in aviation
in the future, and if anyone builds a concorde replacement, they will
probably partner with someone else to make it happen. India is also growing
quickly, currently developing their own planes. I think much of what has
happened with China has been to make the odd thing for other companies, like
MiG etc. Much the same as we Canadians saying we build cars. We just put
the bits together for others. :-)

I will second what John said. I've bought from the dealership in Des Moines
twice, in both cases to buy really small/cheap stuff that I needed. I had to
be in Des Moines anyway, but even if I'd had to drive the 90 minute round

Besides, it is FUN to make a few slow laps around the dealership going
CLATTA-CLATTA and seeing the sales floor empty into the parking lot to watch
an old 240D (highly polished for the occasion) drift proudly buy.

Tom:

My rule of thumb is this: Craftsman in my garage (many hanging on a
pegboard). Cheapo stuff in my Benz trunk's toolbox for emergency repairs.

I guess I am a product of the GSA cheap crap that we were issued in the
military. It got so bad that I finally turned in my GSA tools, purchased
everything I needed from Craftsman, and went back to fixing airplanes with
tools that actually worked right. At the time, I made about $10,000 a year
as a mid-level enlisted supervisor. But hey, the Coast Guard philosophy is
that the guys who fly in the planes are the same guys who fix the planes. My
job was avionics, which meant that it was MY SKILLS the determined whether
or not we achieved to a successful landing during fog.

This was in the late 1970s. I am still using 99% of those same tools in
2007. The other 1% I either lost or had stolen during the years, and have
replaced with Craftsman.
