Oh you are a vulture Kevin, just waiting for me to drop dead and then
swoop in and snatch Gump and Cleo.

I wouldn't worry too much. I've seen a few '72 220D's on this side of the
Columbia, most would be considered project cars. There's a guy who has a
'72 220D for sale, one of three Mercedes Diesels along with a '75 240D and
an '80 300sD. He got them all as a package deal cleaning out a construction
site. The SD started after being "Jumpered" (his words not mine), but the
other two just turned over. I have a hunch that the W115's would have lit
off too if he had known about the pullstart knob. I'm hoping for the best
as I'm going to look at the 220D tomorrow if it's still available.

Is that really possible without major modifications? I've heard
conflicting things about the hood clearance on 107s, and the 617 is
taller than any gas motor. Or maybe it was the reason they never put
the 603 in the 126 coupe? Either way, I'd sure like to have an SDC

I think it may be a turn over issue with the former owners having hit
their spending limit for updating the older diesels and getting out
from under them with intent to upgrade to a next gen diesel (ie, 115
to 126/124). Either that or just no more auto ownership and looking
at the flexcar thing.

2007-07-26 Thread E M
Well, I wouldnt' really say I have any financial advantage, it's more
picking a model and putting a percentage of its value aside for stuff you
know will need attention. Many of you drive diesels, and probably paid what
I did for my car, plus the money I put aside, just for the purchase. I just
look at the total budget, cut it in half and start shopping with that. Up
here, there are so many used mercedes, if you want one that needs a "little"
work, you can get one for $1000-1500. eg, a local CL guy was asking $1500
or best offer for a second owner '83 300 TD, no winters and all original.
It had 350,000 original kms on it. I know many of you say that isnt a lot,
but the trans is probably near its end, and few other things. I bet you
could of had that car for under $1000. I'd just want the price of a trans
rebuild and a few other parts in my back pocket, just in case. :-) Lots of
gasser W124 in the $1500 range too.

2007-07-26 Thread Loren Faeth
But what's the relationship of the ICU to the spark? the dist pickup
goes to the ICU, not the coil. If the ICU is bad, then there is no
spark also. The ICU that failed on the other 380SL had this
intermittent thing, then just quit.

Is there any test for the coil or for the ICU?

Tonight I did the Dist pickup test, and it checks out ok, so I am
down to either the coil, and it was new about 2 years ago, or the ICU.

I know, Cathey would just take out the ICU and resolder it and voila,
the problem is gone. I'm not set up to resolder electronics.

I can put in a NAPA coil and see what happens, but I am reluctant to
do that because of the electronics. I know on BMW R series, if you
mess with the "Bosch balanced electrical system" you fry things and
screw up even more things. I am thinking the ignition on this car
may be as sensitive. Has anyone run an american box stock coil on an

Re: [MBZ] better hurry, this thing is going to end cheap!!

2007-07-26 Thread E M
I really love the old S Classes too, and I'm currently looking for one, but
you have to remember, these are 20 year old sedans that were made in large
numbers. Most have high mileage, or enough mileage that they require some
mechanice attention, which will often easily cost equal to whatever you paid
for the car. I think they tend to trade hands often as they get older, as
they are cheap to buy, and yet, once you have a couple of bills, people
figure they aren't worth the investment, so dump them. These are great
cars, but even a really low mileage one will probably have 150,000 miles on
it now. As you all know, there are lots and lots of parts that can and will
need attention with that kind of mileage.

A mechanic once gave me some good advise. When buying older high end cars,
put aside 10% of the value of the car to really put them into great working
order. 10% of the original price that is, not what you just paid for it.
These Ss were over $100,000 new up here. These are shop prices mind you,
not do it yourself prices, but you can see how it could put some off.

When I got the 300E, I paid about $5000 after taxes, plates and some
suspension workf and put about $4000 aside, for things I know an old car
will need in the coming months or next year or two. It's still a pretty
cheap ride at that price, but the thing is 20 years old, and a 20 year old
car is a 20 years old car.

That's about what really nice S classes of that vintage go for up here, or

have your pick up here for that.

Re: [MBZ] [OT] Linux drivers wanted

2007-07-26 Thread Trampas
I have a IBM T60p and was using FC6 until one day after installing some
updates gnome was gone. So I figured it was time to install FC7. I installed
FC7 and nothing worked, suspend didn't work, took forever to get wireless
working, etc. Finally after a week of trying to get suspend working I
installed ubuntu and everything except compiz worked after install. I was
impressed!

For example in FC6 it took me about 2 weeks to get my HP 5si network printer
to work, under Ubuntu it found the printer and installed it for me by
clicking add printer. Under FC6 I had to compile my wireless driver and
configure NetworkManager, while it just worked with Ubuntu.

Needless to say I will not be returning to Fedora...

Re: [MBZ] 380SL ignition problem

2007-07-26 Thread OK Don
If you have electricity to the coil while cranking, and no spark
(therefore on electricity out of the coil), I'd guess that the coil is
breaking down when hot, or at least has an intermittent short or
break. A "scope" on the coil to distributor wire would tell you
whether it's putting out any voltage, and how much. Of course, you
have to catch it "in the act" again.

Re: [MBZ] 380SL ignition problem

2007-07-26 Thread Loren Faeth

Got a little further with the problem last night. It quit here. I
went out and tried to start it, and it would not start. I took the
coil wire off the dist. cap and laid it on the cap, and told Daughter
to crank-it. Got fire and it started. Left it idle while she got
her stuff to go home, and it died. Ran the same test, and it had no
fire from the coil.

Then I tried grounding the (--) terminal of the coil with the
ignition on. On a points ignition, that is what triggers the
spark. No spark. I am pretty sure the problem is either the ICU,
the coil or the electronic pickup in the distributor. At least with
points, this kind of thing was easy to diagnose. I'm not positive
which of the 3 components is the true culprit, or could it be a bad
crank (Rev) sensor?

For OK Don: there is no resistor in the ignition circuit. Full 13 V
to the coil + terminal. About 10 volt on the - terminal while cranking.

2007-07-26 Thread Peter Frederick
If it's an 87, it's a W124 300D turbo, hot car but not 36 mpg. Later
300Ds with the 2.5L turbo get milage like that.

The E300 with a 605 3.0L non-turbo diesel are later (95 or so), good
performance for a non-tubo and at least 36 mpg, maybe more. Some
models also have a turbo, GREAT cars except for the W210 chassis...

Apparently one of my parents neighbors has a 6cyl diesel that says e300 on
the back. They're thinking late 80's early 90's.

Yes, that's the one with the 606.912 NA engine with the variable length
intake runners. The '95 model was a W124 (clay owns one) while the '96 and
'97's were W210's. '98 and '99 were the same car but were turbo Diesels.

My experience is that the vacuum switch in the driver's door
is the most problematic item. A brand-new one failed within
a few years on the 450 SL.

Larry, did you have any trouble "burping" the system to get the air

[MBZ] 6 cyl e300 diesel?

2007-07-26 Thread Levi Smith
OK, I dunno much about the Benz's other than the w123's I've been studying
for the last couple years but this came up the other day:

Apparently one of my parents neighbors has a 6cyl diesel that says e300 on
the back. They're thinking late 80's early 90's.
I've heard that:
-It's really fast with a lot of power
-gets 36mpg
-trannies are only good for about 180K miles

Who can tell me what this beast might be and how accurate those facts are?
That mileage seems pretty high... But then I don't know that much about the
newer stuff...

Chris,

Do you have a URL for that story? My wife has had seizures and we got the
particular GSD we now have because her grandfather is an outstanding
seizure alert dog (warning typically 20 minutes before a seizure,
sometimes 45 minutes).

My wife is also a diabetic and it would be a great help if Ori would let

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 20, Issue 141

2007-07-26 Thread Robert Bigham
Regarding condensate and drains:

With AC running, it ought to puddle big time under the car
somewhere, generally about in line with the dash, because
the evaporator where all the condensation occurs is there.

Simple test: Get front up on stands, run AC. Wherever
the puddle material is coming from is the condensate drain.

If it's not puddling big time, that is the problem.

Curt, if I remember correctly, the 900 can have either a cable or

Clutch cable has a sort of tensioner behind the pedal. Very quick fix
