Plan's been revised. The cam is coming back off and getting cleaned of all its
Mobil 1, clean the head areas, then re-assemble with assembly lube. I tried to
turn the engine over by hand, and couldn't. I might get back into it tomorrow
morning after work. For now, I'm relaxing and sleeping the rest of the day

You will not be able to easily turn the cam over by hand because of the
pressures being applied by the lifters. Not being able to turn the cam

I have a set about like that. Guages have scale for both R12 and 134. The
high/low side hoses screw onto 134 fittings. On some cars (mb) these will

Turning the crankshaft is one of the few times I pull out my 3/4

Kaleb,

You can do this:

Hook the yellow line to a R134a tank but keep the tank valve turned off.
Screw a high side R134a adapter onto your recovery system.
Attach the gauge high side to the adapter.
Attach the gauge low side to the car low side.
Open both gauge set valves.
Evacuate the system.

My thought today was that I would go the easy, less expensive route
and change my tranny fluid, but not the filter. I want to get it done,
and not wait for shipping on the filter.

So were I to attempt this, I asume that the only way, barring suction,
to remove fluid is to loosen the pan bolts and let it drain out a
 corner of the pan?

Question is: if I do this, is the gasket likely to perform its duties
 hereafter?

AND: If I go ahead and change the filter, and simply buy one from the
local Napa store, can I trust that they will sell me a good brand? If
I have a choice of brands, which is better?

Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-08-10 Thread Jim Cathey
Cleaned, lubed, and adjusted the throttle linkage. That takes awhile!
While I was there I noticed that the cruise control actuator rocked on
its two mounting bolts. Two bolts? Aren't there three? Turns out
the bracket on the bottom for the third bolt was missing, and I think
that could possibly result in it having difficulty regulating the
speed, depending on the axes of pull versus unintended rotation. I
fabricated a new bracket out of some scrap metal, and I even welded a
captive nut to it so that it was more like the missing original. That
actually didn't take that long to do.

We're going on vacation for a week so there will be no progress to
report for awhile.

Plan's been revised. The cam is coming back off and getting cleaned of
all its Mobil 1, clean the head areas, then re-assemble with assembly
lube. I tried to turn the engine over by hand, and couldn't. I might
get back into it tomorrow morning after work. For now, I'm relaxing and
sleeping the rest of the day away.

I've got a good portion of a quart on the cam/bearings etc and will dump
more on as I crank the engine over by hand. Then I'll start it. Will
also do a dry start for oil pressure.

 And
 that's when problems start.

As Tom says, oil works as long as you have a good film.

Another method that helps is to leave spark plugs / glow plugs out and
disconnect the ignition/main power line so the engine will not start -
 then
crank until you see oil pressure on the gauge.

 Good luck.

Oil is fine as long as you are sure that you have a good coating during
assembly. The risk with oil is that so much may run or drip off that
 that
you don't have a good oil film in the bearing. But this is not likely if
 you
 oil then assemble right away.

A lot of people like assembly lube because you can verify visually that
there is enough on the part.

[MBZ] Changing ATF and Filter 190D

2007-08-10 Thread Zoltan Finks
My thought today was that I would go the easy, less expensive route
and change my tranny fluid, but not the filter. I want to get it done,
and not wait for shipping on the filter.

So were I to attempt this, I asume that the only way, barring suction,
to remove fluid is to loosen the pan bolts and let it drain out a
corner of the pan?

Question is: if I do this, is the gasket likely to perform its duties hereafter?

AND: If I go ahead and change the filter, and simply buy one from the
local Napa store, can I trust that they will sell me a good brand? If
I have a choice of brands, which is better?

Re: [MBZ] OT: AC Gauge set

2007-08-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin, work
Yea, I could do it that way. Right now, I have a set of R12 guages I am
using with 134 high and low sides connectors. The R12 center line will hook
to the machine. If I want to ad refrigerant from a 134 tank, I take one of
the lines off of a different guage set which seems to fit both size fittings
and that works. Would rather just get an adaptor for the machine and do it
the right way though. May end up just selling this R12 machine and buying
one already setup for 134

Should be fairly easy to rotate a 603 -- if quite stuck, something is
very wrong. I would remove the cam and make sure you have #1 on TDC.
Check the installation, too -- if you got it sorta cocked, it may not
turn because it's bound.

It's not hard to turn the cam with a large screwdriver inserted between
the hub and locating pin.

Re: [MBZ] OM603 camshaft installation-success!

2007-08-10 Thread dave walton
Well, something has to be stopping it all from rotating. The timing
chain goes around the injector pump, vacuum pump, crankshaft and then
the camshaft. There are a few chain guides too - the two between the
injector pump and the camshaft just site there, while the one on the
other side applies pressure to tension the chain. Maybe loosen the
chain tension and see which still have some wiggle in them? You can
get to the injector pump gear underneath the vacuum pump.

How cheap? It's an original 1976 R75 in great shape. Last I checked,
they ranged from $2600 to $4000 in the condition mine is in.

Thanks, Tom

This is easy: sell me the BMW bike (cheap) and then you have room for
another Benz.

Just pull the drain plug on the pan and the drain plug on the converter.

You really should change the filter

If you're talking about the R129 (early '90s SL)... IIRC the V-12
version was stretched in front of the passenger compartment to make
room for the longer engine. Doesn't make sense to me since there was
also a straight-six version, but that's what the magazines said. Lots
of unique body panels just to add to the stress of ownership (along
with 10 mpg or so fuel economy and of course the ridiculously
complicated computerized power top). Does anyone actually take care
of these things? I see thrashed ones (along with lots of W140 sedans
and coupes) in low-rent used car lots all the time. Look for one in a
junkyard near you!

Zoikes! I forgot that there was a drain plug on the pan. That's great!

But yes, I am thinking I will change the filter now.

Is it the same deal as on old American cars where you use some RTV, or
the like, to make the stupid gasket lay down on the pan so you can
raise it up there and begin to bolt it up? Or has the practice of
shipping AT filters folded up ceased?

Re: [MBZ] Changing ATF and Filter 190D

2007-08-10 Thread Redghost
If you go through the web site @ Rusty, they ship from the Lynnwood
Worldpak warehouse and you get it in 24 hours. At least that has
been my luck. When I call, I get long time shipping.

That said, I would not mess with trying to have the gasket work
twice. It may work out, but then, it may not. I am too chicken
after messing up Gump to go half essed on things now. If you would
like to suck the stuff out, you can come over and use the sucker I
have. Bring your own ATF and have at it. Really a quick job that
way. PITA to do the pan and gasket route, since it is a huge mess
and you remove the filter anyway (at least I end up doing that).
Does allow you to spin the TC and drain it as well.

Rusty has a filter kit. Just order that, and you have all the bits
you will need, but for the the M1 ATF. No need for RTV or ABCs just
drain, remove pan, drain TC, remove filter, wipe up, install fresh
filter, button up the pan. keep typing pain for some reason, and
fill her with four quarts of ATF. Light her off, go through the
gears to distribute fluid, check level, take for a spin to heat up,
check level, and add as needed.
