HHH! My eyes! That body kit looks like something out of the J.C.

Re: [MBZ] My next activity

2008-02-05 Thread Timothy Robinson
I resume walking 7 miles per day each March to get ready for the summer
routine. Asked an old friend if he still had that "Schwinn for sale" and he
said, "You!? That's an expensive bike just to ride to work..."

It's not about workout. I figure each year if I don't have a stroke or heart
attack from "winter hibernation" I'm ready for the next season. Funny thing,
the "kids" can't keep pace with me on that 3mi. up the mountain every
morning and I smoke. They're supposed to be dancers?

Re: [MBZ] OT - diminished tremor, oil change, etc.

2008-02-05 Thread Timothy Robinson
When I need escape I go to my grandparents' house (they're long gone) and I
sleep listening to the old grandfather clock ticking away. It doesn't take
long to adjust to the quarter hour chimes and remember security of decades
ago. Rain on the tin roof doesn't hurt either.

Dad's got an old Western Union master clock in his den. He "procurred" it
when he closed a telegraph office years ago. The pendulum contains something
like 75# of mercury for weight? I like to sit by the fire reading and
hearing the old springs rewind (power supply instead of the old dry cell
batteries).

All about as comforting as the sweet sound of an OM617.

Seems bazaar that a non party member can vote for a candidate - In
those states can you vote in both the Rep and Dem primary? If not who
controls this?

This is handled state by state. In Alabama, I can vote for anyone I want
in the election primary. In other some states you must register to a
party when you register & then you can only vote in that party's
primary. But you can still vote for whomever you want in the general
election. In no case do you actually have to be a party member.

When I actually go to the polls tomorrow, I'll be asked if I need a
Democrat or Republican ballot. In case anyone's wondering, I will draw a
Republican ballot. I'm no happier with the current president than most
of my friends but our current foreign policy failures are no excuse to
vote a Socialist with a GOD complex into office (sorry, couldn't
resist).

Re: [MBZ] Are Mercedes pistons more precise than this?

2008-02-05 Thread Loren Faeth
Mahle has plants in the US. There is one here in Iowa, and I know I
saw another somewhere, maybe in TN? AL? I do know they mark the
exact size on the pistons (at least the last one I bought) so that
the bore can be matched exactly to the piston in a rebuild, or the
piston to the bore in mfg. The fit of the pistons in the bores of
the one factory short block I bought were amazing. Vewy Vewy tight,
as Elmer Fudd would say. At $100+ a hole, those Mahle pistons had
better be a LOT better than the $20 variety for Frods and Choveys.

2008-02-05 Thread Wonko the Sane
I was telling a co-worker just today:

In the last six months I've returned to a vegetarian diet (w/ eggs and dairy
and seafood), stopped drinking coffee as of last Friday morning -- replaced
by Celestial Seasonings tea, taking vitamins, and am exercising for fun
rather than as an obligation. ... And, if I start hand-grinding wheat to
make bread, I am then right back to my late '70s lifestyle. ... I even plan
to bike to work (pedal, not roar-roar -- the motorcycle stays in the garage,
too) come warm weather.

I could start pumping iron and once again bench press my own body weight,
like I did in the early 80s uh, no.

Of course, in the '70s I was running 5 miles a day -- but given my knees and
hips in my mid 50s, walking 5 miles would be a painful workout.

But, the bike theme remains. In the late 70s, I commuted to work (10 miles
each way) on my super-light $1800 Trek bike. Same bike is still in the
garage, waiting for spring.

I'm so frustrated by events in the news, "fiscal budget," politics... I
wonder if my vote is worth the effort and fuel to show up at the polls.
I do know that the biggest impact I can have is to be a good steward of
resources, my own finances and 'Earth.'

It's for that reason that I'm most adamant about my old MBs. They should
outlive my needs. AND... I find it ironic that I'm the one most often called
upon when the friend or neighbor needs reliable transportation as their new
(financed) vehicle didn't serve them.

Probably the best legacy to leave is the smallest footprint.

My observation over the past several years has been that individuals on this
list -- by definition, mostly Old Benz owners -- have several things in
common: a quick wit, a well developed and often warped sense of humor, and
the ability to think outside of the box.

Give us a box of crayons and we will use the wax sticks to build a model of
a 6.9 Benz. Then color it with the sole remaining silver crayon.

An amazing percentage have advanced university degrees, up to and including
PhD. I am not among the later group. I have eight years in university
classrooms and a B.A. to show for it.

The overwhelming majority of those who never darkened the door of a college
classroom all seem to have a Doctorate from the International School of Hard
Knocks and Bloody Knuckles.

We are but a winning team waiting for the right television quiz show.

I would visit with an aunt and uncle who had an old one. You could hear the
slow tick of the gears, even up in the bedrooms. I'm sure it was the reason
I slept like a log whenever there. It was the most calming sound. I think
if we went back to putting small clocks in cars, that you could hear tick,
it would probably rid the world of most of the road rage. :-)

TD is Benz-speak for a diesel wagon. T for touring car, D for
Diesel. Ordinary sedans are labeled D only, but usually have a
turbodiesel badge when a turbo equipped engine is installed.
Occasionally you will see DT or TDT for a turbo sedan and turbo
wagon, but the badging will be D and TD, respectively.

Yup. The windings in the armature are getting old and the resistance
is going up. The result is excessive current draw that only heats
the starter up instead of turning the engine.

Replace with a proper reman or a NEW starter -- a standard "rebuild"
with a turned commutator, new bushings, and new brushes will leave
you with exactly what you have now -- a bad starter.

so did the tremor. By 4 - 5 yrs ago, had lost most feeling below knees. By
abt 2 yrs ago, I was nearlly helpless because of the tremor. Trouble
walking for several yrs, but I continued to put on good act - tried to make
it look to others like I was walking normally, but I was having to think
about every step. Started using stick/cane abt 5 yrs ago, went to 4-wheel
walker nearly 3 yrs ago. Still use walker around house (one on each floor)
and back and forth to car. I keep an elec. scooter in the car trunk for
shopping, longer treks from car, etc. I charge the scooter in the car with
Diesel, so I ride a Diesel-electric scooter; I even put a smaller, paper
decal copy of a MB DIESEL decal on back of the scooter to so designate it.

'Haven't been "bothered" by really bad pain for several yrs. - just slight
in feet/legs all the time. I've many times awakened with steady pain in
feet and legs, especially knees.  'Took two 650 mg Tylenol/day coupla yrs;
last year or so 1/day; sometimes none for 2-3 days.

BTW, 'tried Lyrica; made me feel "impaired." Also tried Prednasone,
cyclosporine, methotrexate, celcept, imuran, bunch of others, some of which
made me sick - all were ineffective; also plasma pheresis and retuxan
treatments, but nothing has worked as well as IVIG, especially for last yr @
2 weeks. Tremor is nearly (~97%) gone.

Oh, I also went to MCV (is that UVA?); saw Dr. Phillips there abt 3 yrs ago;
'been going to Duke abt 6 yrs.

Here's a neat little piece from Jay Leno on one of his bikes. I've always
loved these, and built so well in the day, I think Rolls even allowed them
to use the slogan, "The Rolls Royce of motorcycles". Also made famous by an
Englishman who liked to spend time out in the desert. ;-)

The Brits are still the champions. Every time I see something from
one of the big 3 colonies (USA, Canada, Aussie) that makes me think
they caught up to the UK, within a week I'll see a news item from
the UK that is just totally and completely mind-blowing and I realize
that no colonial wanker can compare to a Member of Parliament wanker,
or the clowns that enforce the laws in the UK.

The factory maintains wood samples from each 600 made - so if a piece of
wood is damaged it can be recreated perfectly.

I used to get a MB magazine (free BTW) and one featured the 600. It was/is
an awesome machine - would love to have one if I win a lottery so I can

It told how the 600 was created/designed and manufactured. I think they

Anyway - great cars - but I;d prefer a 280SEL 4.5 ;-)

it was an amazing movie about an amazing man - guy in his 60s or 70s had a
30s Indian he hot-rodded and took to the Salt FLats in the 50s to try for a
record of over 200mph. In the end he succeeds (based on a true story) and
one of the records still stands IIRC. If you get a chance to watch it, I

I think their point was that delivering a bio refinery is supposed to be
carbon negative because the future bio production offsets dino oil consumption.
However, they could have just produced biodiesel where they lived, and
saved all the fuel used to deliver the processor to to wherever.

Re: [MBZ] Are Mercedes pistons more precise than this?

2008-02-05 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Yes but the cost and time involved in recycling 10% would still need to
be carried. It would mean 6 minutes out of every hour is lost. I could
understand doing that to high performance pistons, especially racing
pistons where failure is a big no no.
It's like testing every tenth car that comes off an assembly line, sure
they may do that at the start of a run of new models.

Re: [MBZ] Are Mercedes pistons more precise than this?

2008-02-05 Thread Peter Frederick
They go back to recycle if defective, along with all the scrap and
turnings.

I believe the pistons in diesel engines are investment cast rather
than forged so that the oil passages can be made directly rather than
machined (the turbos have oil cooled pistons). Makes them a bit
pricey, but they last forever.

Re: [MBZ] My next activity

2008-02-05 Thread E M
I read an article, written back in the 80s I think, that said in the UK, the
energy used to manufacture a new car was equal to driving the then average
new car about 50,000 miles, if my memory serves me. It was from an old car
mag, and they were trying to make the point of how restoring an old car,
even though it used more fuel and no emissions equipment, was still easier
on the earth than junking it, and buying new for many people. Everyone
twists facts to fit their agenda, but if you factor in the fuel to mine the
steel, or even to gather and recycle metal to make it into something usable
again, I can see it.

Re: [MBZ] another addition

2008-02-05 Thread LWB250
Not really, unless it was a diesel. Most of these 123
LWB cars came over from western Europe after seeing
service as taxis. AS a result, nearly every one I
ever saw while searching for the former Klebmobile was
ratted out or near the end of it's useful life.

Because these are fairly rare (mine was a privately
owned import that just barely snuck in before the EPA
closed all the loopholes) people think they are:

1.) Worth boatloads of money. They're not.

2.) Limousines. Again, not.

The 123 LWB chassis was, like many European 123s,
intended as a basic bottom of the line piece of
transportation. Many had manual windows, manual
seats, no AC, velour upholstery (mine) and other basic
trappings. The jump seats are just that - jump seats
- and are not intended for anything other than city
driving, if that, as they have no restraints.

The one good/bad thing about it was the later model
M123 inline six, an engine that was an updated variant
of the venerable M130 from the days of the 114
chassis. It was pretty bulletproof, but had two
Achilles heels - it was carburated (sp?) with a Solex
that was a major POS (far worse than any Zenith) that
warped bases so badly you couldn't keep one on it for
more than a few hundred miles before it warped again.
And the M123 was still afflicted with the #5/#6
cylinder water jacket erosion and valve guide wear
that was common to the M130, too.

I really enjoyed mine when I had it, but it was still
impractical for carrying large numbers of people
safely due to the lack of seatbelts. The AC was
woefully inadequate, too, which required dark window
tint to make the rear cabin habitable on hot days.

Of all the MBs I've had over the years (check out the
list at penoff.com) I miss my 1963 300SE the most.
That was a cool car, and probably the only one I ever
made money on when I sold it.

How the heck can that be carbon negative, to me carbon negative means
removing carbon from the air.
Perhaps the greenies are no longer satisfied with the term 'carbon
neutral', although my understanding is that the combustion cycle will
always produce some carbon no matter what the fuel used.
Although this part is yet to come
http://www.biotruck.co.uk/index.php?men=measure wonder why?
And I quote "However, the drive will still produce 500kg of CO2, so
without the offsetting project it cannot be considered carbon negative,
or even neutral." from this page
http://www.biotruck.co.uk/index.php?men=measure&con=How%20Carbon%20is%20Measured

so basically it is not carbon 'negative' or even carbon 'neutral'.
Ahh that's right because they used an old truck they saved 8 tonnes of
carbon, fuzzy logic.

Hendrik
who saved the planet yesterday because I did not drive the car but I can
drive twice as much today and furthermore since my car is second hand I
am carbon 'negative', which offsets the fact that it has not O2 sensor
or cat

I bet it could hardly make it up the driveway into the garage with a 500E
powertrain in it. lol Even lambo tried to upgrade the engine in later
models with a version of its larger marine V12, but the added weight took
away any advantages the increased HP provided. Eddie Van Halen still keeps

Re: [MBZ] 600 parts prices

2008-02-05 Thread E M
They're a funny size, huge and at the time in the early 80s, were about
$3500 each. NOS is great for trim bits and fenders, but NOS tires are junk
unless the car is going under glass, and then, what would be the point of
owning it.

As for shows, guess it depends on the level of competition. I know often
guys will have their show rims and tires and swap them. Some will give you
points if the car starts and others will swab the tail pipe for any dirt and
shake their heads at you. I like Leno's take on it. He says, "restore them
to 100 point cars, and have fun driving them down to 2 point cars again".

If everyone was out putting lots of miles on their 600 SWB cars, bet a water
pump wouldn't cost $5000 to replace. People don't drive them much, so they
don't break often, and so little reason for mercedes to keep a lot of parts
on the shelf for one. They do keep them, but if a water pump sits on a
shelf for 15 years, they still have to pay the rent to store it for you.
Best way to ensure a future supply of parts for our old cars is to keep
driving them and using them up, that way, we create a reason for someone to
keep making parts for us. Luckily for us, mercedes is great at helping to
keep their old cars on the road. Not many manufactures stand behind and
support their products for so long.

reinstalled the stock paper filter. i'll never buy another one of those,
even for my RC car! I used a chrome K&N crankcase breather filter on one of
my cars since it fit just right on the carb as an air filter. oil-soaked

What, are they a funny size or something? Or do you mean getting the
original make/model of tire for a show? If the latter, what's wrong
with NOS? You don't really have to drive on them.

Re: [MBZ] 600 parts prices

2008-02-05 Thread E M
I was doing some reading on the 6.9. Seems Corker make the proper 15" tired
for the 6.9 for about $400 a piece.

It's not related, but I wonder where one goes to get a set of replacement
tires for an old Lamborghini LM002? They made two versions in the day, one
better suited for road and light off road, and more more aggressive for real
off road. Later, they dropped the "off road" tire and just offered the
single style. I can't find a listing on Coker or Pirelli. I have seen NOS
on eBay, but who would want to mount a tire more than 2-3 years old anyway?
Wonder what these guys do. There must be others with some vintage mercedes
in the same boat.

And at what point does the factory price get high enough that you are
better off taking the broken part down to the corner machinist who
will make you a new one from scratch?

I love this idea of a machine renowned as the highest-tech, best-built
automobile of its time being kept on the road by painstaking hand
craftsmanship---basically pre-Industrial-Revolution,
pre-mass-production methods. The 20th century meets the 18th!

yeah, one door latch is about $1800 and a new water pump is $5000. There

This reminds me: In the program they said that every tenth piston was pulled
out and water poured on it so they could check for imperfections. I wonder
if these pistons are thrown back in the mix for use? Or does it not
adversely affect them?

And in Cuba supposedly they make piston rings by cutting slices out of
old soup cans.

But neither of those examples have much to do (we hope!) with how
modern mass-produced car parts are made. I can't imagine there is ANY
human being directly involved, other than maybe a QA eyeball now and
then, in the manufacture of parts for, say, a Toyota Camry engine.

Watch that movie "The World's Fastest Indian" (a true story about that
guy) and in it he makes some pistons for his Indian motorcycle by
melting down a bunch of aluminum scrap and pouring it in a mold he made
(in his "shed"). I don't remember them showing him machining it down,
but it was kinda cool. It's a fun movie too.

There was one of those car shows that had a segment on a company that
makes pistons for all kinds of obsolete engines, their process is pretty
similar.

Even back in the time when everyone referred to it as
"American Iron" many of the subassemblies, such as
carbs, were made offshore.

I always chuckled when I heard someone make that
comment. For a couple of years I had an end flap from
an H-D carb box that had very tiny discreet lettering
that said something like "portions of the contents
were made in Japan" or something to that effect.

Re: [MBZ] Are Mercedes pistons more precise than this?

2008-02-05 Thread E M
Cleaned off the burs with a pocket knife? Those pistons must have been
heading for a Ferrari. hee hee. I read an article once on how early
Testarossa's, not the early early ones, the flat 12s, had beautifully
machined cranks, but then, they often wouldn't bother to clean off the metal
shaving all that well before assembly. Still, who can't help but love those
red cars. :-)

I saw the same show - they are more precise than you'd think from the
video.

Subject: [MBZ] Are Mercedes pistons more precise than this?

Just watched pistons being made on Discovery Channel's "How It's Made".
Was surprised how rudimentary the operation seemed. Started with a 10'
long
aluminum rod of about 2 1/2 or 3 inch diameter.

After heating it up a lot, it went into a (2000 ton?) punch press.

The parts that surprised me were the various drilling and milling
operations. They seemed like any other drill press operations. But maybe
the
presses were a lot more precise.

At the end, a guy with what looked like a pocket knife scraped off rough
edges and then used a belt sander to smooth edes.

I know when I had my 440 V8 built, I thought it sounded cool that I had
TRW
forged aluminum pistons. I think I just saw some being made.

Though these on the TV program were for use in a V-twin motorcycle
engine, I
believe.

Re: [MBZ] OT Tube testers

2008-02-05 Thread Jeff Zedic
That was me looking for a tube tester. I have a tube cd player and pre-amp
and lots of tubes left over from my tube monoblocks. I wanted a tester so I
could match tubes.

Randy in Manitobe has sent me some info on testers.

Could cost you by the page but you might try a library. My wife works in a
university library and I believe they
have things like old newspapers and periodicals on fiche and reels that people
use for research. They also have the
readers that will make prints for about the cost of a photocopy if I'm not
mistaken.

Hi Larry, thanks for your offer. I'll have to look around for a reader that
makes copies. You know, I had a huge reader, with a built in photocopier
which I bought just to read all my Porsche manuals which are on micro. I
printed them all up, and then got rid of the reader. I couldn't give it
away, and once I tossed it, about a half dozen friends all came forward
saying they wanted it. lol

Again, thanks for you offer, but I'll hold off until I can find a reader
again. lol
