The attendant would hand pump the amount of gas you wanted into a glass cylinder at the top of the pump which was marked off in gallons, and then it would drain by gravity through the hose and into your tank. Some stations would keep the cylinder full and dispense it between the gallon marks. One day we heard a loud boom and the house windows rattled. I guess this whole being minimal thing comes easily to me so I can do it and brag about it. It just fits with my personality and lifestyle. I am pleased my simple things and living simply and minimally. Wastefulness just bothers me. And I think a major factor in this has been my poverty. For example when I was down to about nothing, and rolling dimes to buy food for the week, I started grabbing small handfulls of napkins from the fast food restaurants where I would get my $.99 burgers. I would use these napkins at home for everything, including toilet paper. So now that I (we - thanks wife) can afford toilet paper, I only use two squares at a time to stretch my dollar. This is just an example of the frugal aspect of my green-ness. And I lived without heat in Tucson. And it does indeed get cold there. No hot water either. So getting up in the morning for work and riding my bike in the 30 degrees sucked! And I only took showers after work when I was fully warmed up. Here again, I guess I was in training to be minimal. I don't mean to so much point fingers, I just share my rather extreme ways. I do recognize that there are limitations in peoples' lives. For instance, my wife was telling me how hot her 91 yr. old grandma keeps her house - she had the thermostat set to about 80!!!. I don't exactly feel she ought to change. I don't know what it's like to be that old and have my body feel cold all the time. And I know that not everybody can ride a bike either, for example. Before you expanded and explained that you need a vehicle to tow a boat and plywood, I was going to ask you, out of curiosity, why you need an F150. I think a lot of guys have a truck just because it's a manly thing to do. It does suck that when one needs a truck, one needs a truck and there's no getting around it. You either have one, borrow one, or rent one. I guess a second, more efficient vehicle is the solution. We have kept our Honda CRV even though it gets worse than 20 mpg around town. But sometimes we need to carry something big home from the hardware store or need to carry more than two people and dog which is not really feasible in one of our Benzes, unless that person really loves dogs and hair. What's more, it's been a lifesaver that we kept the CRV as my current job often involves delivering newspapers around this town which is made up largely of bumpy, windy, dark roads - some of them not paved and with big holes and dropoffs, etc. You almost need 4WD, and I wouldn't be willing to put the wear and tear of all the bouncing around and constant shifting and tight turns on one of our Benzes. So what do we do? I am forced to drive something around that gets 18 - 19 mpg in town and is bigger than I need. But at all other times, I choose the 25+ mpg-in-town or the 30+ mpg-in-town cars we have. That is IF I absolutely have to drive. If not, I ride my bike. But that's just me. I LOVE riding a bike, and HATE driving. So it comes naturally. Anyway, just more thoughts. On February 23, 2008, Hans Herrmann, one of the most successful and popular works racing drivers of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, celebrates his 80th birthday. The endurance and Monoposto specialist, born in Stuttgart in 1928, is regarded as one of the most reliable and consistent race drivers of all time. In the course of his motor sport career, Hans Herrmann won more than 80 overall and best of class victories, most of them for Porsche. Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG and Porsche Automobil Holding SE, said in praise of Hans Herrmann: “His versatility as a driver is legendary. Whether in Formula 1, hill climb or endurance races – his strong driving performance always impressed. And for nearly two decades he generally drove straight to the front, and stayed there.” He also drove for other manufacturers, but at heart Herrmann always remained a Porsche driver. The proverbial “Hans im Glück” (Hans in Luck) at the wheel celebrated his greatest successes with sports cars from Zuffenhausen: in the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, the Carrera Panamericana and of course in Le Mans, with the first overall victory for Porsche in 1970, driving a 917. His career began appropriately: in 1952, in a private Porsche 356, he took part in hill climbs, rallies and reliability runs. The very next year, he came fifth in the Lyon-Charbonnières Rally, together with Richard von Frankenberg in a Porsche 356. Thereupon Porsche’s racing manager at that time, Huschke von Hanstein, brought him into Porsche works team. In 1953, Herrmann went to the start for the first time in the 24 Hours of Le Mans where, together with co-pilot Helm Glöckler in a Porsche 550 Coupé, he gained a best of class victory in the category up to 1.5 liters capacity at his very first try. After Herrmann had also secured the title of German Sports Car Champion in the same year, he attracted the attention of Mercedes-Benz head of racing Alfred Neubauer, who integrated the 26-year-old into his works team along with Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Karl Kling. Parallel to this, in 1954 Herrmann continued to start for Porsche and gained prestigious class victories in the 550 Spyder in the Mille Miglia and the Carrera Panamericana. Never to be forgotten is the spectacular incident that occurred during the Mille Miglia in 1954, when Herrmann and his co-pilot Herbert Linge ducked flat under the barriers to cross the rails at a closed level crossing, right in the path of a rapidly approaching train. Later, Herrmann made a photo of the spectacular moment the subject of a letter card, with the inscription “Glück muss man haben” (“You’ve got to be lucky”). In conversation, he completed this definition in a much more serious undertone: “Glück hat, wer als Rennfahrer überlebt.” (“Luck, for a racing driver, is to survive”). When in 1955 the Daimler-Benz works withdrew from motor sport, Hans Herrmann was at the start again for Porsche. There followed the wandering years with Maserati, B.R.M and Borgward and, in 1959, the next homecoming to Herrmann’s ‘ own brand’, Porsche. Together with Olivier Gendebien in a Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder, he won the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, achieving Porsche’s first overall victory in a manufacturers’ world championship endurance race. Shortly afterwards, the combination Hans Herrmann/Porsche RS 60 Spyder, together with Joakim Bonnier, also won the round Sicily ‘Targa Florio’. In 1960, Herrmann also became Formula 2 European Champion with the Porsche 718/2. In 1962 he changed to Carlo Abarth and was active as works driver for the Vienna design engineer from 1963. Three years later, in 1966, he returned to the Porsche works team once again. Not only did Herrmann take part in all the great endurance races, besides driving European hill climb championship courses; he also carried out countless test drives in the – then newly-opened – Weissach Development Center. In 1969 the Porsche works team, with pilots Hans Herrmann, Jo Siffert, Vic Elford, Rolf

But good news doesn't scare people and without scared people willing to thro money at a problem, no one gets rich by spreading good news Larry T (66 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs . - Original Message - From: Donald Snook [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Friday, February 22, 2008 5:06 PM Subject: [MBZ] OT: The eco debate Curt wrote: So if we do nothing we die. [MBZ] Transmission modulator replacement
Hello list- Got a replacement modulator for my '91 300D from Rusty: The new modulator requires use of an updated pin (p/n 126 277 93 75) which I got. Question is this: The modulator comes with what looks like a two piece pin, with a pin thats removable from the piston. The required pin 126 277 93 75 is single piece and it APPEARS that the piston piece should be pulled from the modulator. Is this correct? I can't get it out of the bore with reasonable force. Re: [MBZ] OT: The eco debate
I'm wondering if you perhaps have a voltage fluctuation issue that causes them to burn out. Perhaps you may need to address something there. Maybe, maybe not. I have been using CFL since the '80s when I had to buy them through industrial supply houses. I still have some that I have been using for nearly twenty years. OTOH, some cheap made in China fluorescents I have purchased recently didn't last as long as an incandescent. I have NO IDEA who makes high quality CFL at the present time. Re: [MBZ] OT: CF Bulbs Burning Out
My Son burns out bulbs fast in his house, the CFs burn out at about the same rate as incandescent bulbs. I checked his line voltage it's too high. His 120VAC measures 136 VAC. Apparently CF bulbs are less tolerant than incandescent bulbs to higher line voltages. I told him that he could call the utility company they will fix the over voltage problem by moving a tap on his line transformer at no charge. Re: [MBZ] 240D Cylinder Head Removal
Set to TDC, wire tie the cam sprocket to the chain, then use a bar through the holes in the sprocket to loosen the cam bolt. Remove chain tensioner, slide cam sproket off cam, and lower sprocket and chain into the chain case. At TDC, there is no tension on the vac pump, so the chain won't move. Unscrew bolts, remove intake/exhaust, etc, and it will come right off. Re: [MBZ] OT: Chickens
sorry for late reply I keep chickens. Small city yard and this is about all that fits. Great for allergy prone kids too. They feel. both pain and emotion. Chickens are very loving birds when given love from the start. They can become feral and lose that loving feeling, but I raise mine from peeps and there is nothing comes closer to holding a chicken and petting her as she cuddles up on you. Well, maybe a new baby comes close. Chickens will imprint on their caregiver and being social animals, will take you into the flock as head chicken in charge. At least I am papa chicken. They also are able to select who they want to associate with. A chicken will decide that certain folks are just wrong, but it is individual to the bird and not a flock thing. My birds are not fond of my youngest, and one hen is pretty unhappy with me, but adores my oldest boy. go figure clay On 14 Feb 2008, at 09:32, andrew strasfogel wrote: Not sure about feelings but they certainly feel pain. This was for the first car in the family; a 1928 Oakland which had wooden spoke wheels, a cloth top, and a rumble seat. The filling station across the street had gravity flow pumps. A fellow who was putting gas in the tank of a model T Ford at the station across the street was standing over the tank which was under the front seat. [MBZ] Fw: How old is Grandpa???
Thought ya'll might get a kick out of this - Larry T - Original Message - From: To: LarryT Sent: Friday, February 22, 2008 9:43 AM Subject: How old is Grandpa??? You probably have seen this before, but I get a kick out of it every time I read it... Don How old is Grandpa??? Stay with this -- the answer is at the end. It will blow you away. One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The Grandfather replied, 'Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: ' television ' penicillin ' polio shots ' frozen foods ' Xerox ' contact lenses ' Frisbees and ' the pill There were no: ' credit cards ' laser beams or ' ball-point pens Man had not invented: ' pantyhose ' air conditioners ' dishwashers ' clothes dryers ' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and ' man hadn't yet walked on the moon Your Grandmother and I got married first, . . . and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, 'Sir'. And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, 'Sir.' We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time sharing meant the time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends, not a purchased condominium. We never heard of FM radio, cassette decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt or guys wearing earrings. We listened to big bands, Jack Benny, and the presidents speeches on the radio. If you saw ! anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffe e were unheard of. We had 5 10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . . . but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day: ' 'grass' was mowed, ' 'coke' was a cold drink, ' 'pot' was something your mother cooked in and ' 'rock music' was your grandmother's lullaby. ' 'Aids' were helpers in the Principal's office, ' 'chip' meant a piece of wood, ' 'hardware' was found in a hardware store and ' 'software' wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us 'old and confused' and say there is a generation gap... and how old do you think I am? I bet you have this old man in mind...you are in for a shock! There are 7 girls in a bus Each girl has 7 backpacks In each backpack, there are 7 big cats For every big cat there are 7 little cats Question: How many legs are there in the bus? The number of legs is the password to unlock the Excel sheet. If you open it, add your name and send it on to see who else can unlock it. My name's on the list, where's yours?? Mine's now on the list, but OpenOffice.org won't allow saving with passwords in Microsoft formats ... kind of defeats the point. By the way, what good does the pictoral solution do once you've determined the correct answer and opened the spreadsheet? In addition, the plural of cats is misspelled: it is cats. Re: [MBZ] Whoa look at the price of fuel
usually because of the heat from office equipment/lights etc the issue is keeping the heat down. I once worked as a consultant in a Sprint owned 20 story building, during the weekend coding madness the temp would climb to 90F+ We finally said this is crazy how much does it cost to run the building A/C? Was turned off to *save* money, cause who was in the building anyway Besides 100 contractors burning overtime... Manager when away talked to the building owners. Came back and said $57 per day We charged the $114 for each weekend to the pizza/food account. I have also worked in smart building armed with a key flashlight so that we could turn the lights back on via the main electrical panel when the system's motion detectors and clock decide there shouldn't be any more staff present, no just a few consultants grinding away at 10:30 at night... [MBZ] At least one thing worked today
This has been quite a day -- developed the pictures I took of the Lunar eclipse the other night and discovered that my favorite camera is busted (dragging, now locked, first shutter curtain), so that means a tear-down shortly. All the batteries for my new Pismo are shot, so I have to re-cell at least one -- last time I tried, the circuit board let all the magic smoke out of something and it didn't work (no harm to the cells, I don't think, but I gotta change them around, the guts are different). The new 256MB memory chip won't work in that machine, typical. However, I finally got around to changing the monovalve in the 300D -- it's been reluctant to provide heat, usually only getting decently warm at speed, often gets cold at idle, and with all the ice last week, this was a major pain in the sitting part (I'd rather be in Canada, I can handle snow, the ice stinks!). Well, what do you know, the valve was stuck almost completely closed, can't blow through it at all. New one gives very fast, hot air out the vents! At least tomorrow I can melt the snow we are supposed to get. Cars between the late late 90's, up until recently, didn't interest me much, but before that, and several of the current models look great. There are still a few models on the showroom floor, from the period I don't care for, but as they are replaces, I'm sure they too will be for the quality of the latest offering. I know I wouldn't say no to a new S or CL. :-) Even the C looks pretty good. Still not sure how they get the 6.3 in that car. They must dehydrate the engine, install, and then add water. That's correct, although the networks (Visa, M/C) do voluntarily give some of the protections to debit cards, at least if you process the charge in the manner that runs it though them (signature, not PIN). Another reason to use credit cards, besides warranty and chargebacks, is that credit card companies pay me a couple thousand a year and I'm not eager to give that up. Re: [MBZ] OT: Debit cards [was Re: W220 rust]
We live in entirely different economic environments. I buy diesel (and, regrettably, gas for Debbie's Buick) on the debit card. I buy groceries on the debit card. I do PayPal for eBay on the debit card. Other than that, I take money out of the ATM and pull out some $20s. About the only reason I can think of to have a credit card is to rent a car. Last time I rented a car was in 1995, when I flew to Indy to give Debbie her engagement ring. Story here: http://don.homelinux.net/~don/debdon.html Call me, if you will, a former/reformed Yuppie who decided that Visa was only Satan trying to screw me over. Personally, I think every credit card VP should be taken out and shot as a war criminal. These are the folks who have fu**ed over our economy while they got rich on corporate bonuses. For me, it is a cash economy. If I can't pay for it today, I ain't buying it. D. I didn't say you should use credit cards for the credit they can provide. You can use them as if they were debit cards -- which is really the only way they should be used. I use a credit card but pay my bill off every month. Re: [MBZ] blah blah blah
Just have to remember, somebody had to pay those big bucks up front for the new cars, to allow for all that fine German engineering. The stuff that went into making a W123 great, didn't come cheap, and someone paid for it. I don't poo poo the the guys who paid the big bucks up front for new ones, but I do question why more don't see the value in the older ones. Even $5-6000 for a used 560SEL in good shape, with gas at $1.25 a litre, is still an amazing deal in my eyes. It's like getting a Concorde for the price of a Lear. :-) Ed 300E On 23/02/2008, Gary Hurst [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: if i were out to bust crack and meth heads, i'd get a list of new mercedes buyers On Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 10:07 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i figure the only people who would consider buying a new mercedes are the people still shopping at places like sears. stupid, lost, addled by substance abuse, etc. You figure. Re: [MBZ] W220 rust - now new MB's and $$$
A friend deals with car/train accidents for a major RR. He said I would not believe the number of new and late model MB's [and other high end cars] that suddenly develop engine problems causing them to stop in front of a train - just after the person making the payments loses a job. Yes, many people who buy/lease a new MB can't afford them. Re: [MBZ] W220 rust - now new MB's and $$$
My boss is actually the guy who represents the company and who's signs my contract. Today we were talking and he says, Why don't you buy a new Mercedes? Obviously you like the cars. My response (we've just negotiated the next season's contract), ...Then I'd be like you, so deep in debt with your leased car and adjustable rate mortgage that I'd have to agree to just any number you threw at me as I would need the income. Instead I drive these old Mercedes that are paid for and have the luxury of turning down a contract if I don't like the terms. That is why I actually have the advantage which could afford me a new car. Re: [MBZ] Brand new car
Lease? Cash? Long term debt? Depreciation to date? Current value vs. price paid? Cash. What the hell does it matter, anyway? You sound like all that matters is studying your spread sheets. But seriously, folks. When you live out in the middle of nowhere, a new car doesn't make any sense. Where can you go? Back and forth to the Git n' Go ain't much of a thrill. Or over to watch the loading at the elevator. RLE ** Ideas to please picky eaters. Watch video on AOL Living.
