Yeah I know, not practical for me either... I do get to work from home at
least 1 day a month. Thats $12 right there...

A friend of mine bought an Expedition back in March. The dealership had
taken it on trade for a small car and couldn't get rid of it, they had it
priced at $8k, he walked in and offered $4000 expecting to be shown the
door, next thing he knows he owns it... He's a videographer, doesn't drive
a whole lot but when he does he needs to move alot of stuff. He's also

Not possibe/practical in all (or our) cases - wife works crazy schedule at

I'm afraid the suburban lifestyle of many people makes your suggestions

I do wonder how long we'll see a single person driving a huge SUV - while

I bet the prices for used (and new) SUVs have taken a hit recently.

Re: [MBZ] OT: carfax request

2008-06-02 Thread Mitch Haley

Kaleb C. Striplin wrote:

 any difference?

The biggest difference was that Carfax made no mention of this:
06/13/2003 SOUTHEASTERN REGION 11,388 Auto Auction REPORTED AT AUTO
AUCTION
On Carfax, it was titled to the rental or leasing company in Florida at
10 miles, then titled in Michigan at 13,876 miles with no indication
of what happened in between, other than registrations and renewals while
it was leased.

On Carfax, they say that the car/deer crash was in Jackson county,
and damage was minor. On Autocheck, they give a case number for the
police report but don't say where. If you were to combine the info, you
could probably go to the Jackson County Sheriff's department and ask for
accident report #6151882, but if you only had Carfax, you wouldn't have
the report number, and if you only had Autocheck, you wouldn't know where
the crash took place.

The final difference is that Carfax shows it as advertised for sale
by a dealer in Charlotte Michigan as of 5/22/08, and Autocheck doesn't
have this info. I wonder if Carfax is using a web-crawler to search
for VIN numbers on the dealers' web sites now.

[MBZ] Annoying Brake Squeal/Service Clowns

2008-06-02 Thread Robert Rentfro
Took the E320 in for its service today. Mentioned the very annoying
everyone-at-the-stoplight-turns-their-head-and-looks squeak the brakes are
making to the service clown. He proceeded to give me a lecture on brake
pads. Now normally when one of these putzes busts out the one of the
lectures probably practiced for the unknowledgeable, big checkbooked driver,
I'll usually politely stop them in their tracks (because I am somewhat
knowledgeable and I have a wee checkbook), but for some reason I thought I'd
listen. To make his long story short since the demise of asbestos pad all
brakes have squeaked. 99 out of 100 MBs since about 1990 brakes squeak.
Maybachs were driven off of the showroom floor with squeaky brakes. He said
there was nothing they could do. I was amazed!!!

So I told him that I would listen to the next ten cars that pulled into the
service drive and I supposed nine of them would have
fingernails-on-the-chalkboard brake squeals. He then started the Curly
Shuffle. Twelve cars and no brake squeaks later I was talking with the
service manager politely requesting I get my car back with no brake squeaks.
I mentioned, in passing, his service boys story and told him that was a nice
story but if they weren't interested in making my brakes not squeak there
are three other dealerships and one MB approved indy I could go to. He
apologized, tossed the key to a new, obscenely redC320 and I was on my way.

I suspect the dealers willingness to deal was based on it being a used vehicle.
Still in December or January I'm going to buy a new pickup, my Dakota is beat.
I've already informed the wife it may be a full size regular cab since it
*seems* like the prices on those are quite flexable. Although I saw the other
day that Toyota is making the Tacoma with a 4cyl 5spd in a 4x4. Fueleconomy.gov
says 17/22, the Chevy Colorado I was considering is 16/22... Both seem to be
available for about $19k.

Subject: [MBZ] 85 300SD

Hi All,

I have an 85 300SD with approximately 290,00 on the chassis and 50,000 on
the drive train.

Almost at home, this afternoon, after completing a 45 mile each way high way
trip I heard a terrible noise. Sounded as though it was coming from behind
the dash while in the vehicle and resmbled the sound of a broken water
pressure line but more intense. However, with only a minimal loss of power,
at first, the a return to normal power all gauges showed good. no change in
water temp., oil prressure cruise or climate control activity.

Pulling in my dirveway, maybe 1 or 1 and 1/2 miles since the onset, I
immediately shu the vehicle down. The engine stopped but the noise did not!
Upon leaving the vehicle I could really hear the noise and it was extermely
LOUD. I opened the hood and decided the noise was comig from the area of
the air filter/turbo area. Both were shaking and I could feel a slight
vibration.

Occassionally a whif of smoke would come from the area near the transmission
dip stick and I would see aspark from the area where the transmission and
the engine unite.

I panicked and began pulling any relay and fuse I could lay my hands on, in
the area near the brake reservoir. Still the noise, shaking and smoke
continued. Finally on the passenger side/front of the engine compartment -
mounted on the wheel well - I pulled a small four connector relay apart form
the wiring and the noise, vibration, smoking and sparking stopped.

When the relay was re-connected none of the symptoms were again seen.

When trying to start the vehicle in any gear except park or neutral no
atempt to start the egine is witnessed, just as it should be. However,
when in either park or neutral I hear the familiar tonation of a burned out
starter turning while no attempt to star the engine is found.

Other than a dead battery, after sitting for several months, about two
months ago this vehcile has never given me any challenges starting/shutting
down.

Any clues folks and how could I test to see if any or your theories are
correct?

Or perhaps this is a good time to put in new speakers. I certainly
would if I were RRing my dash and hadn't already upgraded the audio
in my 300D.

Actually, when I do that job I have several customizations in mind to
make to the car at the same time, highes priority of which is to run
some tubing through the dash from the firewall down to the ashtray
area for vacuum and manifold pressure gauges. I have already cut a
custom panel out of sheet plastic to replace the ashtray surround, and
I have the gauges themselves. Just need something to hook them up to
and I can put the whole shebang together.

[MBZ] 1980 300 diesel wagon

2008-06-02 Thread Donald Snook
I found an ad for a 1980 123 wagon. The seller listed it as a 300TD. But,
does a 1980 wagon have a turbo? I thought the early ones were NA. Whether
it is NA or turbo, what sort of mileage with these get?
The price seems too low, so it might be a turd. According to the seller it
only has 200K miles.

 Don't rush!

Be careful with the dash, it's easy to poke a hole in a speaker cone
 with it out!

I should be doing this, as I discovered that the compressor died the
black death in my new 300D -- I'd be happier if I was putting a
clean condenser and evaporator in it than flushing and installing a
 filter...

[MBZ] 30 MPG? I already get it

2008-06-02 Thread W140
The Government is demanding 30 MPG and the car makers are proud of
their cars which make it there.
Heck My 1992 W-140 S350/300SD has been giving me 30 MPG since I
bought it years ago.
What I would like to see is a Diesel-Electric S Class (or any
other class for that matter).
Anyone know of a Natural Gas conversion for the Diesel?

Re: [MBZ] Annoying Brake Squeal/Service Clowns

2008-06-02 Thread Robert Rentfro
Well I got the E320 back and the brakes still squeal. Youngest daughter was
getting some time behind the wheel so I had her spin right around and I went
in to see the service manager who, of course, was gone for the day. I was
not a happy camper. I calmly voiced my displeasure with my service clown and
told him I'd likely not be back. I think I'll call the other dealerships to
see who says they can stop this noise. I'm bound to use dealers until my
Loyalty VISA is spent.

Very aggravating.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300 diesel wagon

2008-06-02 Thread David Hemsley

My understanding is that the T stands for Transport/Tourism while of course
the D equates to a diesel engine.

Kaleb is exactly correct - the initials TD, correctly used, always means a
station/estate wagon. It is not uncommon however to find those that think,
somewhat logically, that TD would mean Turbo Diesel.

Our SDL gets a pretty reliable 27, has gotten 30-31 a time or two.
The 190D used to get 42 on the highway, now it's 39. May need to
dial in the IP timing, since removing that for a re-sealing was
about the only substantive difference change made.

Hehe, I just got 34.1 on the last tank (Shell, with a good tire
instead of a half flat one).

I think the Sumitomo tires at 45 psi help quite a bit, the old on

I do drive carefully, especially after getting hit.

My brother's SDL gets 29 or so on the highway. Nice to make our

There are problems with the brakes on the W210, it's very hard to
keep them from squealing for some reason.

Ditto for the Volvo 740 -- I have one that sometimes screams, and an
aquaintance of mine worked for Nato in the 90's -- the border guards
stuck their fingers in their ears every time they drove up, never did
find pads that didn't howl.

I'll ask my friend Hans, but I remember him saying he'd had a couple

I'm still waiting for that. I still get a 1-2-3-3-4 shift, and occasionally
a 1-2-3-4-3-4 shift pattern. Except for that the thing is in pretty good
shape as long as the frame welds hold.

This is why our '90 300D 2.5 is named Rattled - as in past tense.
One motor mount was totally collapsed when I bought it - wife was
certain that I was out of my mind for trading good money for a car
that made that kind of racket. She's amazed at how nice it is with new
 mounts.

amazingly quieter when the engine mounts and the frame are
 not in direct contact.

Trashed motor mounts were the first thing I replaced in my
just-departed '91 300D. Nice and easy, with near-instant payback. But
for rewards its hard to beat a transmission rebuild with everything
working well after the pressures are dialed in right!

Re: [MBZ] 30 MPG? I already get it

2008-06-02 Thread Peter Frederick
No, contact patch is pretty much normal as far as I can tell -- no
abnormal wear in 1 miles, good traction, etc. Max inflation
pressure is 51 psi.

My brother though the tires on his car were low -- but they were 32
psi, just like the label says. However, they are 46 psi max
inflation tires, and were running on the sidewalls until he raised
the pressure to 40 psi. I think the sidewalls on the high pressure
tires are softer.

You get lowered rolling resistance and a little bit harder ride, no
other differences. The Sumitomo tires aren't great on ice (a real
problem with a diesel) and one was falling apart (bad puncture
repair), but otherwise they are fine.

Re: [MBZ] A more graphic description of diesel gas prices

2008-06-02 Thread Steve MacSween
If it's any comfort at all: I paid CDN $1.52 a liter for diesel last week.
That is about $6.90/gallon (imperial) or about $5.75 a US gallon.

Highest in my area for gasoline is about $5.15/US gal, most closer to $5.

Heck My 1992 W-140 S350/300SD has been giving me 30 MPG since I
bought it years ago.
What I would like to see is a Diesel-Electric S Class (or any
other class for that matter).
Anyone know of a Natural Gas conversion for the Diesel?

A more graphic description of diesel gas prices, including a cost
 breakdown.

 http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/gdu/gasdiesel.asp

They list the following info on the pumps to the right,

Gasoline at $3.46/gallon

Taxes 11% =$ 0.3806

DM6% =$ 0.2076

Refining 10% =$ 0.3460

Crude 73% =$ 2.5258

Diesel at 4.08/gallon

Taxes 11% =$ 0.4488

DM7% =$ 0.2856

Refining 21% =$ 0.8568

Crude 61% =$ 2.4888

Something seems fishy here:

Why is DM 38% higher for diesel?

Why is Refining 148% higher for diesel?

Surely the new refining techniques didn't make refining gasoline cost
40% of the cost of refining diesel, did it?

Diesel still uses less crude than gasoline.

Anyone have any answers?

Re: [MBZ] Annoying Brake Squeal/Service Clowns

2008-06-02 Thread Robert Rentfro
So not only do the brakes still squeal I looked at the detail job they did
for me and all over the right front fender there is over spray from what
ever product they used on the tires. And the carpets were still damp from
shampooing and of course I wasn't thinking so by the time we got home my and
my daughters shoes were completely clean on the bottom with the damp carpets
acting as the cleaning agent. Now they are ten time more dirty than when I
too it in. I am tight.
