Re: [MBZ] Quantum pics available

2008-07-10 Thread Bill R
I had the first year US Focus. Except for the 5 [?] recalls for that model
I liked it. It was roomy [especially lots of headroom for you tall people]
and quite comfortable to drive for hours at a time. Assuming the recall
stuff got worked out in later years I think it is probably a good choice. I
got about 28+ MPG with lots of interstate miles.

No such issues. I am selling it so I can buy something with an automatic
transmission (for Debbie). Thinking either a four cylinder small pickup or
perhaps a twin of our daughter's car (Cavalier), a car Debbie and I both
like a lot. Ford Focus is another possibility. Nothing on the short list
will match the MPG of the Quantum but we will have to live with that.

The Quantum was a 'project of love' -- I couldn't stand to see the car go
off to the crusher as it was scheduled to do. But now it is time to move on
to something different.

Per the list suggestion, took off the cover plate and turned the top
(single) check valve around (as it should be, noticeable from looking at
it), put it back together, got vac but still would not shut off.
Further diagnosis showed one broken hose, replaced that, it still would
not shut off. Traced problem to the vac switch thingie (for
transmission kickdown?) on top of valve cover. Twiddled with that a bit
(not sure what I did) then all was well! Good brakes, good shutoff,
everything working.

Thanks to the list!

no
 s/r, followed by a tobacco brown/cognac leather (burlwood) 1971 300SE L

The 3.5 engine was extremely smooth and powerful, and the air suspension
 was
quite luxurious. They both had 4 speed ATs, compared to the 3 speed
transmission in the 280SE 4.5 sedans.

I was lucky enough to own a '72 28SE 4.5 - the SEL was the same except
 for
a 4 additionalm space in the rear seat area. MB engineers are known to
have commented that this was probably the best big MB sedan ever made.

The engine in mine was in pretty good mechanical condition and even so it
only got around 14mpg when tuned perfectly. But all that was forgotten
once the speedo got above 80mph - the road got quieter, the wind noise
subsided and best of all the chassis changed the whole character of the
 car.
The suspension became smooth and compliant - soaking up bumps and tar

They're amazing cars but like all from that time they can rust severely.
The front bumper support, lower fenders, headlight buckets, rockers (big

Tancredo's wife was at our small county fair last summer, putting literature
on car windshields. I had a sudden flashback to my days at Bob Jones when I
saw her. She just seemed to ooze a message that if you ain't white and if
you can't speak English, you have no place in my corner of the world.
Perhaps she doesn't really think that but that is how she came across.

Hillary's area campaign rep was sitting at the Dem booth with me; she was
born and reared in Rome. I kept trying to get her to introduce herself to
Mrs. Tancredo (and do so speaking Italian) while wearing her Hillary
t-shirt. She wouldn't do it. So, I suggested she say, Tancredo -- isn't
that an Italian name? Still wouldn't bite.

The campaign literature he distributed in Iowa didn't even try to disguise
his downright racist and extremist views -- so he gets one point for
honesty.

[MBZ] Cars for sale

2008-07-10 Thread Fmiser
I recently looked at a couple W123s

Located south of St. Louis, MO near the town of Hillsboro (just
up the road from the Goldman covered bridge park)

His email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

He has a '84 300D, asking $2200
 * practically rust free
 * fair red paint
 * broken/missing air filter mount pieces
 * tailpipe falling off
 * power sun roof
 * power steering leak - occasionally driven dry
 * evidence of water on floor ( I don't remember which one...)
 * complains that the engine vibrates
 * new motor mounts
 * looks like old style injection pump damper bolt

And then the one I really want an '85 300TD - but I want it
for _way_ less than the $5000 he's asking
 * tired and worn red-ish paint
 * sun roof
 * door locks disconnected
 * rear suspension is needs work
 * 3rd row seat
 * damp floor on passenger back seat
 * AC works, but not great
 * dash disassembled around the HVAC controls
 * glove box door latch broken
 * seems to start an run okay
 * transmission shift well

No association, I just happened to look at them and am helping
'cause he seems to be a nice guy - just wants too much for his
cars.

I can't believe you of all people would say Ron Paul comes off as a loon.
Or perhaps people have accustomed themselves to the lunacy that is Washington
so the only candidate that makes any kind of sense whatsoever comes off as a
loon...

His driving a Chevette makes me admire him more. He either doesn't care about
cars or considers it a forever car that he'll just keep patching up as long
as he needs to. He's in his 70s isn't he? How much longer is he likely to drive?

He was treated poorly throughout the primary. Anderson Cooper needs to be
slapped around for the Electability... Have you got any sir? question from
one of the debates.
Theres a great clip on Youtube of Dr. Paul asking Can I be part of the debate

Re: [MBZ] why do all ebay and craigslist MB's get 45 mpg?

2008-07-10 Thread Curt Raymond
I'll reply here so the whole world can see...

The guy had offered 4 cords for the car. That was at $150 a cord a price which
is apparently no longer valid... That was before I got the car, replaced the
exhaust, replaced the fog lights, fixed the drivers door lock and got the
sunroof all the way closed. Soon I'll have the passenger's door lock fixed, the
antenna replaced and the sunroof working properly.
So at this point I'm thinking its more like a 6 or 7 cord car. After all the
above is finished, new moisture barriers are in the doors, and the car is
painted (the infamous $50 paint job, rustoleum with rollers) and has a
replacement hood it'll be an 8-10 cord car...

The car is in Winchendon, MA 01475. Locust is great wood, I'd probably give a
one cord discount for it. Maybe I'd even take an extra cord for wood that was
cut but not split. I'm all about options.

Re: [MBZ] 1978 300D

2008-07-10 Thread LarryT
Hi Donald,
Sorry I didn;t reply before now - the 78 300D is a W123 like your previous
so except for the turbo thing the '78 will be virtually identical to the 82
 83.

As far as accelerated wear on a non-turbo, I think that;s not a issue.
With a turbo the turbo is what takes the wear - without the turbo the engine
takes the wear but without the turbo the wear is limited -

If the engine has seen regular care/maintanence, the engine is probably
less of an issue that all the auxilliary systems.

IMO the electr. windows, turn signal switch, vacuum system, rust under the
doors, in the rockers, at the jack points, lower fenders quarters, floor
pans, - check the rubber weatherstrips - esp front rear windshields, and
if it;s an auto trans, check it for shifting. It has a small plastic
bushing that causes shift problems - I can give you the p/n and instructions
if you end up getting it. After this many years it;s likely bad - it makes
it shift late, downshift early - all kinds of things - I had to get MB
CLassic involved to locate the part.

BTW, I have had a '78 240D for 20+ years - exc for the engine they;re the
same -

I found a 1978 300D here in Wichita cheap. It has working a/c. so, I may
buy it before someone snatches it up. It only has 175,000 miles. I am
trying to get pics of the interior or schedule a time to go see it this
evening.

I don't know anything about the 300D that early. I had two 123's diesels,
but they were 82, 83. Both were turbo. Anything special I should look
 for on this one?

Is the mileage a little worse on the non-turbo since you have to have your
foot in it all the time? Should I expect 24-26 on the highway? (that is
what I got in my 123's). Any other information would be great.

 Thanks,

candidate and the potential damage it can to do McCain and the help it will
give obama - but a lot of people are getting behind Barr -

It's a shame the media doesn't act professionally and present him as a
potential choice instead of ignoring him completely.

Unfortunately, I probably have more management experience than McCain --
and I'd hardly think I was qualified to run a nation.
I fall back on what someone recently said -- getting your jet shot out of
the sky does not qualify you to be President. ... I went through the very
same flight training program in Pensacola as McCain. I flew in the same
squadron. He beat me to retirement by two ranks.

How about 30 years of experience in the Congress/Senate? How about being
a senior Senator serving on some of the most important committees and
being apprised of classified secrets and consulting with four different
presidents on matters of national security.

This argument that McCain is not qualified to be president is totally
ridiculous! He has decades of experience. The argument is especially
ridiculous when you consider the alternative. A State legislator who
voted present on more votes in the Illinois legislature than any other
before him who then went on to win ONE statewide race for Senate. Then
served for about 11 minutes before he started planning his run for
 president.

peanuts when you consider hillary raised ~$30 mil in the primaries.

1/2 mil? Ron Paul probably has several times that much leftover after his
primary run. Too bad he had his heart set on the Repugnant nomination.

The good news is that with Barr in the race, Republican voters have somebody to
vote for. The bad news is that the Libertarians don't have anybody to vote for,
except maybe Chuck Baldwin. Barr's prosecutorial past made him a lover of
certain bun bans in the 1990s, and he'll always be a lover of the War on Some

 OLD BUTCH

John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young
 layers
(hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and
was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and
attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could
tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on
 the
porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this
morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to
investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets,
bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run
 for
cover. To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it
couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the
 next
 one.

John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair
and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the
judges not only awarded old Butch the NoBellPiece Prize but they also
awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a
 politician
could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our
planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them
 when they weren't paying attention.

VOTE CAREFULLY THIS YEAR...THE BELLS ARE NOT ALWAYS AUDIBLE

 Thanks,

 Tom Hargrave

I saw an interesting article in Sports Illustrated about this (I know
strange place to have a political article). Apparently, when Obama ran
for Senate, Mike Ditka was considering running as the republican opposing
Obama. Just think if Ditka would have won, Obama would be a nobody for
state legislator. I don't know if that means it would have been Hillary
or the dems would have put up any number of other candidates. In fact,
some people who voted for Obama might have voted for a different
republican. It could have been Romney v. Biden.

You are looking at a 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Diesel
(350 ci (5.7 L) LF9 Diesel V8), yellow in color with brown interior.
When the Caddy came out it stickered at almost $20,000 and had every
option available. GM at the time was trying to produce more fuel
efficient vehicles so they experimented with diesel technology. Title is
clear and we have been driving the Caddy around for the last six months.
This car was originally purchased to do a veggie oil conversion but have
too many projects and not enough time. All around the Caddy is in pretty
good shape for the age. The car was owned by an old man for most of its
life so it didn't get many miles put on it. I was told a new diesel
motor was put in the car but do not know how many miles are on it. All
owners manuals, original paperwork, and original window sticker is
included. Since I purchased it we have replaced the starter (new GM
starter, not rebuilt $700), alternator, 2 new batteries, belts, fuel
filters, greased chassis, and performed all around maintenance checked
through everything. The car runs and drives well, all lights work, power
windows, power locks, and even the rear defroster works. To my knowledge
the only things not currently working are the A/C (I think might be a
relay) and the power drivers seat. The drivers seat could use a
recovering. Also the pieces rear pieces between the body and taillights
needed to be replaced (priced around $170 painted to match) and
currently missing the passenger side mirror. The trim ring around the
passenger side headlight is also snapped but does not affect the
functionality of the headlight. The headliner is also missing in the
car. Remember the vehicle is almost 30 years old. I do have the original
rims in my shop if someone wants them with the vehicle. The rims and
adapters are hard to find because of the way the wheel bearings are
setup on this car. We replaced the stereo with a nice Alpine CD deck,
new 4x6 speakers in the dash, new 6x9 in the rear deck, 2 - 12 MTX
subwoofers in the trunk, with a Panasonic amp. The windows tint is 5%
limo tint and not the best job in the world but gets the job done.

Re: [MBZ] Nice car on ebay

2008-07-10 Thread R A Bennell
They are surprisingly easy to drive given the size of them. Maybe that is
because you can sort of see the corners
unlike today's cars. I worked with a lawyer who had a 1974 Sedan de Ville way
back when and drove it a couple of
times. My recollection is that it had a lot of miles on it and did not cause a
whole lot of rrouble except for some
sort of AC fuse or relay that kept blowing and being replaced.

The guy had offered 4 cords for the car. That was at $150 a cord a

the car, replaced the exhaust, replaced the fog lights, fixed the
drivers door lock and got the sunroof all the way closed. Soon I'll
have the passenger's door lock fixed, the antenna replaced and the
 sunroof working properly.
So at this point I'm thinking its more like a 6 or 7 cord car. After
all the above is finished, new moisture barriers are in the doors,
and the car is painted (the infamous $50 paint job, rustoleum with
rollers) and has a replacement hood it'll be an 8-10 cord car...

The car is in Winchendon, MA 01475. Locust is great wood, I'd
probably give a one cord discount for it. Maybe I'd even take an
extra cord for wood that was cut but not split. I'm all about options.

The 78 is indeed the car I have been looking at. I am thinking I might buy it,

enjoy driving for a little while. I have a feeling the 75 HP is going to
frustrate me. My last diesel was a 90 2.5 Turbo. That car will be a ROCKET
compared to this one.

As far as the SDL goes, it looks like it has had some interesting and
non-matching paint work done. Probably not a bad price if it has been kept up.
But, 25 MPG doesn't seem like enough to justify the huge markup of diesel over

Re: [MBZ] Wheels?

2008-07-10 Thread TE
I had them listed on eBay for $249.99, so currently $250obo plus shipping. I
will send pictures offlist to anyone who is interested.

Here is the information for all who are interested, copied directly from my
eBay posting:

Up for sale is a good condition, used set of four OZ Mercedes 14 Old Style
Alloy Wheels, commonly referred to as 'Bundts' or, in German 'Barock Felgen'
amongst the enthusiast community. All four wheels are size 6.5JX14 H2ET30
with a 5x112 bolt pattern.

These wheels were taken from my 1977 240D and replaced with steel wheels
from the junkyard before I sold it. The reason I took them before the sale
of the car is twofold: 1) because OZ is one of the most reputable brands in
the wheel manufacturing industry and 2) because of the rim width (6.5);
this size is far less common than the typically offered 6 wheel and gives
you more options when selecting a tire size.

Suggested fitment on Mercedes models is as follows; however, please consult
your authorized Mercedes dealer for verification:

R107
W115
W116
W123
W126

These wheels ride excellent with minimal vibration. Upon visual inspection,
they are free of major defects (e.g. dents, deformation, cracks, etc.). All
four valve stems are also in good condition and leak free. Seeing that they
are used, there are minor chips here and there, especially where the old
wheel weights were mounted (see pictures); however, there is no curb rash to
the wheel lip. Although four center caps are included, one of the center
caps is missing the retaining clip. In addition, they could probably use a
good cleaning. :-)

The identification stamps on the inside of the wheels are as follows:

O.Z
TYP-RC M3
6 1/2JX14
H2 ET30
Made in Italy

Gotta look for leaks then. Check the shaft seal, although that will

Valve stem seals are the first suspect, but I'd check valve to guide
clearance when replace the seals. If the valve stem will move
sideways in the guide when off the seat enough to feel it, the guide
is shot.

I've also seen guides loose in the head, what a scary thought. You
CAN replace them in situ if you are very careful with the next size
oversize.

Subject: [MBZ] Injection pump for W115 300D

My brother wants to replace the injection pump on his 300D -- on
plunger set spills fuel all the time, no matter what the engine crank
angle is, so I'm thinking it's toast (could just be seals, but it's
expensive to find out).

I know these are rather uncommon, but if anyone has one for sale,
please let me know!

expansion valve is new

Peter Frederick wrote:
Gotta look for leaks then. Check the shaft seal, although that will
prevent a good vac, unlike a cracked evaporator or condenser. Also
check for a leaking servo on the expansion valve, they crack too.
