Re: [MBZ] Quantum pics available
I had the first year US Focus. Except for the 5 [?] recalls for that model I liked it. It was roomy [especially lots of headroom for you tall people] and quite comfortable to drive for hours at a time. Assuming the recall stuff got worked out in later years I think it is probably a good choice. I got about 28+ MPG with lots of interstate miles. Re: [MBZ] Be Careful Voting this year!
Tancredo's wife was at our small county fair last summer, putting literature on car windshields. I had a sudden flashback to my days at Bob Jones when I saw her. She just seemed to ooze a message that if you ain't white and if you can't speak English, you have no place in my corner of the world. Perhaps she doesn't really think that but that is how she came across. Hillary's area campaign rep was sitting at the Dem booth with me; she was born and reared in Rome. I kept trying to get her to introduce herself to Mrs. Tancredo (and do so speaking Italian) while wearing her Hillary t-shirt. She wouldn't do it. So, I suggested she say, Tancredo -- isn't that an Italian name? Still wouldn't bite. The campaign literature he distributed in Iowa didn't even try to disguise his downright racist and extremist views -- so he gets one point for honesty. [MBZ] Spork plugs
A week ago I pulled the plugs from the rough-running '82 380SL, and found #2 a bit wet, and #7 oil-fouled. I cleaned them off and it ran great again. Well, a week later and it's running a bit rough again so I pulled #7. Oily. This car supposedly had top-end work done 'recently', and the clean nature of the heads supports this. It ran great (though a hard starter before the new ignition components) until fairly recently, now it's doing this. What are the chances that this is due to something other than rings? Damaged valve stem seal? Head gasket? Would a compression test be worth doing? I can't believe you of all people would say Ron Paul comes off as a loon. Or perhaps people have accustomed themselves to the lunacy that is Washington so the only candidate that makes any kind of sense whatsoever comes off as a loon... His driving a Chevette makes me admire him more. He either doesn't care about cars or considers it a forever car that he'll just keep patching up as long as he needs to. He's in his 70s isn't he? How much longer is he likely to drive? He was treated poorly throughout the primary. Anderson Cooper needs to be slapped around for the Electability... Re: [MBZ] why do all ebay and craigslist MB's get 45 mpg?
I'll reply here so the whole world can see... The guy had offered 4 cords for the car. That was at $150 a cord a price which is apparently no longer valid... That was before I got the car, replaced the exhaust, replaced the fog lights, fixed the drivers door lock and got the sunroof all the way closed. Soon I'll have the passenger's door lock fixed, the antenna replaced and the sunroof working properly. So at this point I'm thinking its more like a 6 or 7 cord car. After all the above is finished, new moisture barriers are in the doors, and the car is painted (the infamous $50 paint job, rustoleum with rollers) and has a replacement hood it'll be an 8-10 cord car... The car is in Winchendon, MA 01475. Locust is great wood, I'd probably give a one cord discount for it. Maybe I'd even take an extra cord for wood that was cut but not split. I'm all about options. -Curt Date: Thu, 10 Jul 2008 07:52:31 CDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] why do all ebay and craigslist MB's get 45 mpg? Re: [MBZ] 1978 300D
Hi Donald, Sorry I didn;t reply before now - the 78 300D is a W123 like your previous so except for the turbo thing the '78 will be virtually identical to the 82 83. As far as accelerated wear on a non-turbo, I think that;s not a issue. With a turbo the turbo is what takes the wear - without the turbo the engine takes the wear but without the turbo the wear is limited - If the engine has seen regular care/maintanence, the engine is probably less of an issue that all the auxilliary systems. IMO the electr. windows, turn signal switch, vacuum system, rust under the doors, in the rockers, at the jack points, lower fenders quarters, floor pans, - check the rubber weatherstrips - esp front rear windshields, and if it;s an auto trans, check it for shifting. It has a small plastic bushing that causes shift problems - I can give you the p/n and instructions if you end up getting it. After this many years it;s likely bad - it makes it shift late, downshift early - all kinds of things - I had to get MB CLassic involved to locate the part. BTW, I have had a '78 240D for 20+ years - exc for the engine they;re the same - Larry T (66 MGB, 74 911, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net 800-583-8601 Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs - Original Message - From: Donald Snook [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, July 07, 2008 12:23 PM Subject: [MBZ] 1978 300D I found a 1978 300D here in Wichita cheap. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover. To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance Diesel Reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 2008-07-09, 9:50PM You are looking at a 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance Diesel (350 ci (5.7 L) LF9 Diesel V8), yellow in color with brown interior. When the Caddy came out it stickered at almost $20,000 and had every option available. GM at the time was trying to produce more fuel efficient vehicles so they experimented with diesel technology. Title is clear and we have been driving the Caddy around for the last six months. This car was originally purchased to do a veggie oil conversion but have too many projects and not enough time. All around the Caddy is in pretty good shape for the age. The car was owned by an old man for most of its life so it didn't get many miles put on it. I was told a new diesel motor was put in the car but do not know how many miles are on it. All owners manuals, original paperwork, and original window sticker is included. Since I purchased it we have replaced the starter (new GM starter, not rebuilt $700), alternator, 2 new batteries, belts, fuel filters, greased chassis, and performed all around maintenance checked through everything. The car runs and drives well, all lights work, power windows, power locks, and even the rear defroster works. To my knowledge the only things not currently working are the A/C (I think might be a relay) and the power drivers seat. The drivers seat could use a recovering. Also the pieces rear pieces between the body and taillights needed to be replaced (priced around $170 painted to match) and currently missing the passenger side mirror. The trim ring around the passenger side headlight is also snapped but does not affect the functionality of the headlight. The headliner is also missing in the car. Remember the vehicle is almost 30 years old. I do have the original rims in my shop if someone wants them with the vehicle. The rims and adapters are hard to find because of the way the wheel bearings are setup on this car. We replaced the stereo with a nice Alpine CD deck, new 4x6 speakers in the dash, new 6x9 in the rear deck, 2 - 12 MTX subwoofers in the trunk, with a Panasonic amp. The windows tint is 5% limo tint and not the best job in the world but gets the job done. Re: [MBZ] Nice car on ebay
They are surprisingly easy to drive given the size of them. Maybe that is because you can sort of see the corners unlike today's cars. I worked with a lawyer who had a 1974 Sedan de Ville way back when and drove it a couple of times. My recollection is that it had a lot of miles on it and did not cause a whole lot of rrouble except for some sort of AC fuse or relay that kept blowing and being replaced. My last diesel was a 90 2.5 Turbo. That car will be a ROCKET compared to this one. As far as the SDL goes, it looks like it has had some interesting and non-matching paint work done. Probably not a bad price if it has been kept up. But, 25 MPG doesn't seem like enough to justify the huge markup of diesel over gas. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Wheels?
I had them listed on eBay for $249.99, so currently $250obo plus shipping. I will send pictures offlist to anyone who is interested. Here is the information for all who are interested, copied directly from my eBay posting: Up for sale is a good condition, used set of four OZ Mercedes 14 Old Style Alloy Wheels, commonly referred to as 'Bundts' or, in German 'Barock Felgen' amongst the enthusiast community. All four wheels are size 6.5JX14 H2ET30 with a 5x112 bolt pattern. These wheels were taken from my 1977 240D and replaced with steel wheels from the junkyard before I sold it. The reason I took them before the sale of the car is twofold: 1) because OZ is one of the most reputable brands in the wheel manufacturing industry and 2) because of the rim width (6.5); this size is far less common than the typically offered 6 wheel and gives you more options when selecting a tire size. Suggested fitment on Mercedes models is as follows; however, please consult your authorized Mercedes dealer for verification: R107 W115 W116 W123 W126 These wheels ride excellent with minimal vibration. Upon visual inspection, they are free of major defects (e.g. dents, deformation, cracks, etc.). All four valve stems are also in good condition and leak free. Seeing that they are used, there are minor chips here and there, especially where the old wheel weights were mounted (see pictures); however, there is no curb rash to the wheel lip. Although four center caps are included, one of the center caps is missing the retaining clip. In addition, they could probably use a good cleaning. :-) The identification stamps on the inside of the wheels are as follows: O.Z TYP-RC M3 6 1/2JX14 H2 ET30 Made in Italy -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ed Booher Sent: Thursday, July 10, 2008 9:02 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Wheels? Gotta look for leaks then. Check the shaft seal, although that will prevent a good vac, unlike a cracked evaporator or condenser. Also check for a leaking servo on the expansion valve, they crack too. Drives you nuts, eh? Re: [MBZ] Spork plugs
Valve stem seals are the first suspect, but I'd check valve to guide clearance when replace the seals. If the valve stem will move sideways in the guide when off the seat enough to feel it, the guide is shot. I've also seen guides loose in the head, what a scary thought. You CAN replace them in situ if you are very careful with the next size oversize. [MBZ] Injection pump for W115 300D
My brother wants to replace the injection pump on his 300D -- on plunger set spills fuel all the time, no matter what the engine crank angle is, so I'm thinking it's toast (could just be seals, but it's expensive to find out). I know these are rather uncommon, but if anyone has one for sale, please let me know!
