They probably still have them as front line aircraft, while we wait for
the you beaut joint strike fighter from you lot (I think it is supposed
to zero in on hippies with reefers).
There are also a couple of tiger moths for pilot training.
However it doesn't really matter because the pilots are all off driving
buses for budget airlines, seems fair, the taxpayer pays for their
training and then they give the benefit of their experience to some
wonky fly by night outfit.

Bill,
The vent issue sounds like either a vacuum problem or the vacuum pods
controlling the vents are going bad. You could check them with a mity vac to
ensure they are good.

New front fenders are pretty cheap. Try Rusty or search the net. I have one
in my shed which wasn't used on a rebuild project. I think it is the left
one. I'm in Michigan if you are interested.

My 300D is now using one quart of oil every tank of fuel (usually 320 miles
or so). Using dingo juice. It not leaking out anywhere and it's not being
pumped out by a haywire vacuum pump. The thing is running great.

What am I risking breaking if I continue to drive this thing with that oil
usage? This usage rate has been very consistent lately. It does get a bit
less when I say off the freeway.

The presence of the yellowcake AND its removal was well covered by

Yep, sort of. I first heard of it from an article in the Washington
Pest...As it turns out, I work for a company called ABS Nautical Systems.
We sell software to the maritime industry for managing maintenance on
ships...one of our largest customers is the U.S. Maritime Administration,
which manages the Ready Reserve Fleet. One of those ships, SS Gopher State
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Gopher_State_(T-ACS-4) was activated not
long ago...we didn't know where she was going, but it's not unusual for one
of these ships to be activated to move a shipment either to or from Iraq.
Afterwards, my contact at MARAD confirmed the story. Gopher State sailed
to Diego Garcia, picked up the yellowcake and took it to Montreal to deliver
to the Canadian processing company.

Re: [MBZ] Some issues with Stella

2008-08-15 Thread Curt Raymond
I'm still up so I'll take a stab.

I'd guess your speedo cable has fallen out. Any thrashing noises behind the
pod? The only way you'll know is to take the pod out and have a see.

On mileage, is the temp coming up to around the middle (80c)? If not that'll
hold the mileage down, you also might check to see if you have a sticking
brake. After a highway run feel each wheel (carefully!) if one is significantly
hotter than the others its probably a sticking brake.
Marshall always said clogged fuel filters would make mileage go down. Even he
admitted that one didn't seem to make sense. The airfilter does make sense
though as does making sure the valves and timing are spot on.

Of course you can always check your tire pressure. ;)

Stella (1985 300TD) has a few issues that I could use some help with.  Here
we go!

I was driving down the highway the other day and the Speedometer suddenly
plummeted to 0.  The Odometer, which had been spotty anyway, now doesn't
work at all.  Is there a somewhat easy fix for the Speedometer?

My Cruise Control doesn't work sometimes.  However, if I hold up on Accel,
it will, indeed, accelerate.  Suggestions?

My AC works great.  Actually, it freezes my testicles on long trips
(cryo-storage).  Sometimes, though, the vents in the center console don't
blow but the two outside vents do.  When I left her in the garage two days
ago, she was blowin' out all four.  This isn't a huge deal, but I know
someone knows what to do!

My mileage kinda sucks.  I know I cannot expect to get good gas mileage on
the highway going 80 or 85 with the AC on full blast, but I was getting 21.8
and I had hoped to get better out of the diesel.  Any ideas on how I could
squeak a few more MPG out of her?

I have a couple of places on the car that are rusting out.  Does anyone know
a place to buy, say, a whole front fender?

All right.  I suppose that is it for now!  Thanks for the help!

Bill

Re: [MBZ] Some issues with Stella

2008-08-15 Thread Peter Frederick
First, if the speedo doesn't register, most likely the cable is
broken, so no odometer or speed control -- both driven off the cable
in the speedo head. It's possible the speedo head went bad, but very
unlikely, it's just a magnet and a disk and a bushing. The odometer
may or may not work when you put a new cable in.

The AC blows out the center vents only part of the time, depending on
temperature. You will need to check the vacuum servos to make sure,
but if the outside temp is close to the setting on the dial, you will
get no center vents.

Use the temperature wheel to set desired temp. If you only get AC
with the temp wheel all the way cold, you have a climate control
problem, likely a bad interior temp sensor.

If your odometer is not accurate, you cannot easily determine you
milage unless you fill up, make a decent trip of known milage, then
fill up again That's how I found out my "new" 87 300D was getting
better than 30 mpg -- a trip to Ft. Wayne of 300 miles, filled up as
I was leaving and again while I was there, used 9.6 gal of fuel.
The odometer will slip (and won't work if the cable is messed up)
before it goes completely dead.

Check tires, brakes for drag (especially parking brake), wheel
bearings, injection timing, transmission for slip (a milage killer
for sure) and front end alignment. 21 mpg on the highway, something
is wrong, should be at least 25.

Don't now about price of rebuild, but I do know two things-these are some of
finest MB diesels (I own one) -and around here-NE they are scarce and pricey
so a rebuild might well be worth it. Have you done the tranny>?

Performance products has kits and long blocks and short blocks-or they used
to. If you get a long block there are some cheap engine shipping companies
out there-200 IIRC.

My '90 2.5L turbo is in serious need of a head gasket. It is also making a
distrubing knocking noise at idle from deep inside the engine. Since I'm
going to bear the brunt of the head gasket repair my Indy suggested
comparing the cost to an entire engine rebuild. Does anyone know of an
outfit selling a kit of parts for a rebuild of this engine? Rusty only sells
individual pieces. The car has 225k on the clock, is rust free and has had
most of the maintenance type items rebuilt or replaced in the last 50K.
Maybe a rebuild is over the top but I would like to compare the costs. Any
thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Spotty vent control? Either cracked vacuum diaphragms, or
bad solder joints in the ACC pushbutton array.

Advance the timing a bit? Check brakes for dragging. Make
sure there aren't any fuel leaks. Change fuel and air filters.

Re: [MBZ] Barry O'Bama

2008-08-15 Thread Curt Raymond
Yeah, well...

I'm stunned at work that very few of my co-workers read... I'm a computer geek,
I work with computer geeks and for the most part I'm the only one thats ever
read Douglas Adams (and I've read all of it). It seems odd that I spend so much
time reading and most other people seem to spend lots of time watching tv. Of
course that may have something to do with why I never got cable tv...

Part
of the Bush tax cuts was a $1000 tax CREDIT per child up to $2000
dollars. It is gradually phased out after $75000 a year for single
parents and I don't know the income for couples. That is a tax increase
on the LOWER MIDDLE class and the WORKING POOR.

2008-08-15 Thread Gary Hurst
hey, i wish i lived in a civilized part of the world myself, but i don't.
ilive in a place where decades of curious public policy has created an
extremely violent underclass that has little issue with murder. i live in
a place where one , if not the main, source of order is a heavily armed
populace. i live where police often do not nor will not nor even desires to
protect you. rather than wonder whether or not my life would be better off
in japan or sweden or australia or holland, i just accept the facts and
adapt to them as best i can.

the idea that taking my guns makes the world safer rather than more
dangerous does not seem to make any sense to me.

Re: [MBZ] 190e Wiper motor A-1

2008-08-15 Thread Rob
Got the wiper motor today from an ebayer.
Hooked it all up and it works like charm.
Waiting for a "sliding jaw" clip from the dealer before I can close it up.
This is the clip that slides up and down the rail inside the door.

Assuming that the same problem lies ahead in the passenger rear door,
does anyone have a good used motor? 86 190e right rear door.

Thanks-

[MBZ] Potential engine rebuild

2008-08-15 Thread R Wasser

[MBZ] Some issues with Stella

2008-08-15 Thread Bill Dunaway

Bill

[MBZ] OT ozguns

2008-08-15 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Not really sure how we'll pay for it but in effect the ban was intended
to get rid of automatic and some semi-automatic weapons and tighten up
the laws relating to ownership of non automatic rifles and handguns. It
is still possible to own firearms but it is more difficult.
For instance I could go downtown to a firing range and blast away with
handguns ranging from 22 caliber up to the 44 magnum. No license
required. I could join a rifle shooting club and blast away as much as I
want but I can't go out and buy an assault rifle and then put it in the
broom closet ready to go, just in case. Which was the scenario that lead
to the ban.
Sure mate, come on over but leave your weapons at home, like I said we
have a firing range in case you get the urge to hold onto a tool of death.

Re: [MBZ] leave it to ebay to screw sellers, raise their prices, and try to disguise it as a price drop

2008-08-15 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Perhaps some of the reasons for the general dislike of GWB is that he is
aggressive, picks on the weak and is not a team player.
The world looks for hope buts gets a gun shoved into it's hands instead.
Far as the yellow cake goes, not really a weapon is it, don't know if it
can even be used in a dirty bomb.
Far as I remember the reasons for invasion where that Iraq had WMD
(particularly biological types) and was going to/had given these to
terrorists, to use against the west.
The reason I reckon the story about the yellowcake was not widely
reported is that people would have laughed and the government would have
looked very desperate.
To give some context, South Australia is one of the worlds largest
suppliers of uranium and we got semi loads of the stuff being shipped
every year. If it was so dangerous in it's natural state I would think
that an armed escort would be provided and facilities where it is stored
would be guarded like Fort Knox.

German Bosch plugs are still available; I bought some today. The plugs

Re: [MBZ] Plugs

2008-08-15 Thread Tyler Backman
I've never seen an 80s Volvo run well for more than a week with
Platinum plugs. Their fuel systems (especially on turbo or k-jet
models) tend to run rich, which fouls the platinum plugs. Maybe a late
80s non-turbo model (lh 2.4 or newer) would run OK with platinum
plugs. The Bosch copper plugs leak combustion gasses, which will
destroy the plug wires.

The Bush tax credit is subsidizing children and an underhanded tax on people
who don't have them. The poor, working or not, would do better with classes
teaching them how its cheaper to not have children then to have them tax credit

Why don't I get a tax credit for the kids I don't have that aren't taking up

Part
of the Bush tax cuts was a $1000 tax CREDIT per child up to $2000
dollars. It is gradually phased out after $75000 a year for single
parents and I don't know the income for couples. That is a tax increase
on the LOWER MIDDLE class and the WORKING POOR.

Re: [MBZ] Yellowcake: was: Re: leave it to ebay to screw sellers, raise their prices, and try to disguise it as a price drop

2008-08-15 Thread Peter Frederick
The presence of the yellowcake AND its removal was well covered by
the press, including the massive contamination in the area resulting
from the Iraqis (who didn't know what it was) dumping the stuff out
of drums and using the drums to catch rainwater for drinking, in the
process giving them some rather nasty potential future health problems.

Never underestimate the dishonesty of the extreme right wing press.
All yellowcake shipments are highly secure, it's outright toxic along
with radioactive enough to cause serious health problems, so it's
always handled rather tightly. There is no non-government
trafficing, either, as only governments or their contract agents do
anything with it (namely enrich it for use in reactors or weapons).

That particular stuff has been sitting around since the 80s, and is
NOT a nuclear weapon, simply highly concentrated unenriched uranium
compounds (don't remember exactly what, it's not raw ore). It has to
be converted to uranium hexafluoride and "enriched" to remove the non-
radioactive isotope to be used as a weapon, and Iraq gave up on that
a long, long time ago.

Use NGK copper plugs, at the correct factory temperature rating.

Some people use Bosch plugs, but they are crap IMO. They tend to leak
exhaust gasses past the crimp on the insulator.

[MBZ] W201 190D Transmission vacuum diagram/advice needed

2008-08-15 Thread Tyler Backman
The 124 FSM pages on adjusting the transmission would be very helpful!
If you can send them I would be very grateful.

I do have a W201 manual on adjusting the throttle linkage. It's weird,
but I tried adjusting the valve on the IP to both extremes, and
couldn't notice any difference in how the transmission shifted, or how
the vacuum responded regardless of how I adjusted it.

Thanks,
Tyler

Tyler, if you haven't figured it out by then, when I get home tonight
(in about six hours) I will be happy to look at the setup of my '87
which I imagine is pretty similar to yours (though it's a 603 engine),
and tell you what line goes where.

I can email you the PDFs from the 124 FSM that explain adjustment of
the IP valve and modulator, but I can tell you from experience that
there is not much point in messing with the IP valve unless you have
the accelerator linkages adjusted by the book---the whole system is
interdependent and you have to start in the right place or you'll just
be chasing your tail making repeated adjustments that throw something
else off.

Try searching on the mercedesshop.com forums for "87 300D transmission
adjustment' or some such---since there are a lot more '87 W124 diesels
than '87 201 diesels like yours out there, there is likely to be more
info. I know there are some pretty helpful threads on there.

Re: [MBZ] W201 190D Transmission vacuum diagram/advice needed

2008-08-15 Thread Tyler Backman
I have the vacuum amplifier unit, which as far as I can tell "builds"
the modulator output from 3 inputs: turbo boost, IP valve/regulator,
and vacuum pump vacuum. What I don't know is:
-Which hose connects to which port on the amplifier?
-How do I know if the IP valve/regulator is adjusted properly, and how
do I adjust it?
-How do I know if the modulator on the transmission itself is adjusted
properly, and how do I adjust it?

I *think* I have it hooked up properly, but no matter how I set the IP
valve/regulator, it's pressure never drops below 2psi at WOT (I heard
it's supposed to hit 0psi), and the pressure at the modulator never
drops below 10psi (I heard it's supposed to hit 0psi also). If I
disconnect the IP valve/regulator so that it's input is 0psi, then the
pressure at the transmission modulator drops to 5psi (what it should
at 0psi of boost), but it takes quite a while to do so, probably
longer than it should??!!

If I can't get ahold of a factory manual or anything, I might try to
make some sort of "bleed off" system, so that the IP valve/regulator
hits 0psi at WOT.

I wish mercedes had just used a simple kickdown cable system like
every other diesel vehicle with an automatic :( On the bright side, if
my efforts are wasted and I cannot fix the vacuum system before my
transmission self-destructs, I will have justification to do a manual
swap.

Thanks,
Tyler

At any rate, the tranny vac must go through a vac regulator on the IP, attached

off driving 300 miles with no tranny vacuum than with a slipping tranny.

[MBZ] Plugs

What brand of spark plugs should I use in my Volvo. NGK, Champion, Autolite,

Re: [MBZ] 560 SL battery drain

2008-08-15 Thread Mitch Haley
Seems like somebody traced a 126 current leak to a dome or foot lamp in the
back
seat area. Flick the manual override switch to 'automatic' from 'always on' and
the leak goes away. Took him quite some time to find the problem too.
I'd take a good look around the SL in the dark some time.

No, he got a 1st hand report from somebody who saw it himself.
Him reporting it to us now is 2nd hand or hearsay.

To answer the question that Larry asked, I blame Bush for the TSA and the HSA.
I
blame him for the increasing thuggery of the BATFE. I blame him for saying back
in 2001 that the terrorists hated us because we were free, and we would not
give
up our freedoms to appease the terrorists, then he strove at every turn to take
away our freedoms to show that he was 'doing something' about the terrorist
problem.
I blame him for every person who is assaulted and robbed by armed federal
agents
for walking down a street with a camera in hand. I blame him for putting people
in a cage if they want to exercise their 1A rights (free speech zones a mile
away from the 2004 Dem and Rep conventions).

[MBZ] W201 190D Transmission vacuum diagram/advice needed

2008-08-15 Thread Tyler Backman
I have a 1987 190D Turbo, and the previous owners mechanic brilliantly
"solved" a transmission control vacuum leak by hooking the
transmission modulator directly to the vacuum pump, so it flared/
slipped like crazy but didn't shift harshly. I'm trying to reconnect
everything properly, but can't seem to find a diagram that shows me
what each port is on the vacuum amplifier, injector pump leak valve,
etc. I have the Mercedes W201 manual CD, but it appears to make no
mention of the transmission or vacuum system at all (which I find
rather weird). Does anyone know where I could get this info? Even a
W124 manual would be helpful!

By "guess and check" I was able to get it working somewhat, but
pressure at the transmission modulator still doesn't drop to 0psi at
WOT, and I'm a bit worried that I'm going to fry my transmission if I
drive it with too much vacuum at the modulator.

I have to drive over 300 miles tomorrow, so I'm hoping to sort this
out tonight :(

Part of the Bush tax cuts was a $1000 tax CREDIT per child up to $2000 dollars.
It is gradually phased out after $75000 a year for single parents and I don't

And there were lots of trucks leaving Iraq in the days leading up to the

This info does not fit with the mainstream narrative; therefore, you

[MBZ] Yellowcake: was: Re: leave it to ebay to screw sellers, raise their prices, and try to disguise it as a price drop

2008-08-15 Thread Loren Faeth
I know this to be true form 1st hand reports. The son of a guy I
work with was one of the officers in charge of getting the yellowcake
the H out of iraq and to Canada. I have no reason to doubt this
officer that it was there and it was moved. It had been guarded and
kept very quiet for all these years

2008-08-15 Thread LarryT
any logic to eBay not allowing sellers to give feedback to buyers except for
positive? least I think that's the way it works now -
not sure why it was changed - seemed like a good idea to let everyone know
how others operated.

Then again, maybe it'll push some business back to the traditional ways of
selling? A lot of people will like that !

[MBZ] Help!!! (again). Anyone know how to get stainless trim off 123 roof?

2008-08-15 Thread Robert Bigham

Help!!! I need to get the little spear or scimitar-shaped piece of stainless
trim off the roof of my 123 sedan right where the roof joins the belt line just
behind the back door.

Reason? To fix rust hole right under tip of scimitar. Part of getting ready
for paint.

I have the FSM buried somewhere under tons of junk.

Anyone know how in twenty-five words or less? Anyone know if it's in FSM?

Tnak all of you.

So how does one eliminate the moisture and crud that inevitably
gets into the oil in operation? My JBI has fill and drain screws,
and a sight glass. I forget the exact function of the bleeder screw,
but you're supposed to use it in operation. If moisture in the oil
corroded the vanes in the pump then it wouldn't seal well, and
thusly not pump well.

Re: [MBZ] 560 SL battery drain

2008-08-15 Thread Jim Cathey
More leak chasing. The schematic shows eight wires on Fuse 12, and
there are two ring terminals of four wires each, which bodes well for
the schematic being correct. I put a test light in series with the
fuse power supply so that slips wouldn't cause big problems, and the
offensive current was still about 150 mA. I then used the low-current
60 A AC/DC amp clamp (a one-time Christmas gift from my brother the
mechanic, perfect for digging around in a car's wiring harness as it
has much smaller jaws than my 400 A Fluke or the 2000 A OTC that I
just bought) and clamped it in turn around each wire in the offending
clump at Fuse 12. One of the red wires was the culprit, which means
it's not the clock or diagnostic socket wire. I then reversed the
test and grounded the offending ring terminal. I went around the
car with a small 12 V battery in series with the test light. I'd
ground the battery and then probe for power wires with the test light.
When the light lit up I'd look at the meter (on the dash) to see if
the current was going through the offending wire. No joy at the back
of the car, nor at the courtesy lights, hazard switch, radio, or dome
light timer. (All customers of Fuse 12.) But when I popped out a
dome light I found my circuit! At least it's a short (!) one, though
I was out of time to chase it further.

Something is stinky about this one but I can't put my finger on it.
I had an '81 300TD that was a similar exterior color but mine was slightly

I'd like a 4spd wagon with manual everything but not that much. I know where
there is one I could probably have for $5k that has a greasecar kit in it.

The world knows Sadam needed killin'. A large part of W's problem is how
MOST of IT has been screwed up since. 'Didn't finish Afghanistan, not
enough troops, left borders WIDE open, not enough troops, watched/allowed
looting and destruction of Iraqi infrastructure, not enough troops, did away
with all gov, all police and all military and sent all those well-trained
people home mad as Hell with no jobs and with all their weapons and ammo,
then started kicking in their doors and holding guns on their wives and
children, poured cash in indiscriminately. BTW, did I mention not enough
troops? (Lay some of that on Dictator Bremmer, but he was W's man.)
