[MBZ] 190D Odometer breaks and Brake warning light works

Yipee! I now have a broken odometer.
And also reported by the wife, a yellow light came on. To her credit, she
actually took note, and looked it up in the manual. She says it means that
the pads need replacing. Is there such a light?

[MBZ] 300SD RV

2008-09-19 Thread Max Dillon
Judging by the number and size of the pics, the owner/creator is quite proud of
it.

I'll bet it will be a great survival vehicle post-iranian attack because the
diesel engine will not be affected by the EMP from the high-altitude nuclear
detonations they'll use to take out our critical information infrastructure.
Plus, it is converted to run on veggie oil.

 Subject: [MBZ] S350 diesel sedan

 Hi all,

OK, so I started making biodiesel about a year ago. It's running very
well
in my tractors and skid loaders. I get the bright idea to look for
diesel
cars as I already have a gas pickup (that's paid for). I started with
the
VW's , wanted a little bigger vehicle. A friend suggested looking into
 Mercedes diesels.

I set my Ebay search to watch for MB diesel cars. I find a S350, very
reasonable price, very nice condition. I win the bid, get it home and
then
find out I bought a rod bender!

I'm trying to decide to sell it again or keep it and give it a shot. It
runs great, doesn't seem to be consuming hardly any oil. Body interior
in
 great shape.

I've done quite a bit more research and I've been getting about 10-1,
horror
stories to good stories with the S350's. I'd sure like to hear from
others,
good or bad. Keep it or sell it while I can!

 Thanks

 Nick in Wi

Yup. The one that looks like this: (O)

indicating an intermittent short in the pad-thickness-detection system

Re: [MBZ] Carfax?

2008-09-19 Thread andrew strasfogel
Thanks!! I owe you, Mitch.

This has some very interesting information. The car was sold to me from
someone in MO, and represented as having been in TX prior to that. Yet, the
Carfax shows nearly 6 years spent in between in Bella Vista ARK. WTF.

It's amusing to think that someone might have tampered with an odometer that
registers 318 K miles.

DC exempts diesel passenger vehicles from tailpipe emissions testing, but
when I passed DM inspection it registered as having also passed the normal
emissions test for gasoline vehicles. Whatever.

Re: [MBZ] Charlie's Benz gets him in trouble

2008-09-19 Thread andrew strasfogel
You have just made a powerful argument for outlawing civilian ownership of
tasers and other dangerous weaponry.

But you're still missing the larger point. The Gov. said she would
cooperate with the Troopergate investigation and now has reneged, which may
be understandable in light of her being handled by McCain campaign
attorneys. But why won't Mr. Palin testify? If you say the Troopergate
investigation is politically motivated, I would make the same argument
against the Republicans who are going after Charlie Rangel.

BTW, shouldn't you cast partisanship aside for one brief moment in support
of a fellow MB enthusiast, who just happens to be a liberal Democrat?
Senator John to hell with partisanship McCain would commend you for such a
gesture!

[MBZ] Another new problem

2008-09-19 Thread Curt Raymond
Took the 190D to my Indy because of a squeeling symphony the other night
driving home from work. It appears it was caused by a sticking parking brake
cable - Whew!

On the negative side the annoying rumble I've been hearing appears to be a
differential bearing. He's nervous about being able to replace the bearing
without screwing up something else inside. He also figures it'll cost more in
labor than a replacement would cost.

So, anybody got a differential for an '85 190D 2.2l 5spd manual? I found one
online (so far) in CA for $150 which seems like a good price but I bet the
shipping will be spendy.

I've also called Dwight's buddy Fred as I *think* he has a 190D 2.2l.
I'd also appreciate it if anybody knew of any other differentials that'd work
(correct ratio I mean).

Thanks!

Frederick Moir might have an extra from his 190Dt parts car. It would be a bit
taller (2.65:1) than your 2.2 5sp however. I've heard that a 2.5 turbo with
2.65
and 5sp is a bit slow off the line, 2.2 NA with that gearing would be worse. I
don't think Cathey is overly thrilled with his 2.2 converted to 5sp with a 3.07?
diff from the 2.2 auto.

On the whole, $150 for a fairly rare diff doesn't sound bad, especially if they
will ship it for another $50 or so.

you must go broke paying somebody to fix your cars all the time.

That's how they get really expensive, really fast! This is why I've always
replaced belts, shocks, brakes, radiators and anything else that can be done
easily enough in the driveway/garage. Then, there's the time element when
you just need it running NOW! It's not so critical with my RC trucks, but
if I paid someone $15 or $20 per hour for the time I've spent getting 5
cheap used ones back into shape, I could have bought new ones! It started
out with 3 gas-powered ones that needed some work to run. I ended up with 2
runners and one with a bad engine. One of the runners was sold, the other
was traded for another gas-powered fixer, and the one with the blown engine
traded for a running battery-powered electric truck. The fixer is fixed
now, runs well and is up for sale. The electric one is running as good as
new, and is going to be my neighborhood terrorizer.

[MBZ] OT Friday humor Politics Fw: illegal aliens

2008-09-19 Thread Kris Gilmore

- Original Message -
Subject: illegal aliens

just kidding ... i think ...

From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada (a very underground paper): The
flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada
has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased
patrols to stop the illegal immigration.

The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus
among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to
hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of
sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians
crossing their fields at night.

I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood
producer huddled in the barn, said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield,
whose acreage borders North Dakota .

The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. He asked me if I could
spar e a latte and some free-range chicken.

When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to
show him my screenplay, eh?

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher
fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing
speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. Not real
effective, he said. The liberals still got through, and Rush
annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk.

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet
liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station
wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves.

A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions, an
Ontario border patrolman said. I found one carload without a drop
of drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often
wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors
have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing
re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to shoot wolves
from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them
for the Rapture.

In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of
crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on
bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a
half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian
immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the
supposed senior-citizen passengers on Pe rry Como and Rosemary
Clooney hits to prove they were alive in the '50s.

If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk
Show, we get suspicious about their age, an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are
creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan
Sarandon movies.

I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just
can't support them, an Ottawa resident said. How many art-history
and English majors does one country need?
