First, and most obviously, the engine is sensitive to low revs. Which
means that revs always have to kept high, especially in gears 3-5.

All your problems sound like they might be relieved somewhat
with a shorter rear end in it. Our 190D (manny conversion)
exhibits a mild form of this behavior. I believe that I also
need to swap rear ends with the donor as well. Whereas the
200D (115) is very grunty and has plenty of torque. Surprisingly
pleasant driving behavior.

Re: [MBZ] chutes

2008-10-03 Thread OK Don
The Citabria I was flying was rented out by the four owners - I
suspect they always left the chutes in as a matter of course. The OU
sailplane club rented it as a tow plane, and I rented it to play in
when they weren't using it. I never had any chute training, but always
buckled it on, and figured I'd pull the ring if I pulled the wings off
and managed to get out. It was lots of fun until they jacked the rent
up over 50% one month.

Re: [MBZ] W123 fenders .. Rusty?

2008-10-03 Thread Scott Ritchey
Mine was some kind of plastic. I don't recall the details but it took maybe
an hour to drop the vacuum reservoir. I think there were screws or nuts
under the back compartment liner. I think I used soapy water and blew into
it with my mouth via a hose to locate the leaks. You do want to remove the
tank because the leaks could be on top which is up against the
chassis/floor.

How hard is it to expose the tank in a wagon and locate the crack? Is it

Re: [MBZ] Euan

2008-10-03 Thread Euan

This is dangerous, Rolf. I could bore you cross-eyed on this subject.

The wagon was manufactured with this transmission. The PO (a Brit padre
with an RAF Tornado squadron in Holland) selected that option at the
Dutch assembly plant he toured with his options tick-sheet. I bought the
wagon from him after he emigrated to the Colonies in 1987. It had 29000
miles on it then.

Because I like to *drive* my cars, I particularly wanted the manual
transmission and was very lucky indeed to find this one. 300TDs are rare
here and most are auto trans. It was for these reasons, I suspect, that
*all* the dealers I spoke to about the asking price said the same thing:

"It's a diesel! For God's sake, man, forget it!"

"It's non-turbo? Are you serious?"

"Manual transmission?!! It's a dog! Don't touch it."

Well, I did and it ain't.

But it does have a few peculiarities which I suspect you auto-trans
drivers won't be familiar with (or would tolerate). These may be generic
to manual trans 300TDs:

First, and most obviously, the engine is sensitive to low revs. Which
means that revs always have to kept high, especially in gears 3-5. If
not revving adequately, the transmission gives you instant feedback in
the form of juddering. I'm told this is something to do with the
fly-wheel but I'm not qualified to comment on that. This feature of the
wagon appears to be a design flaw. Although I have learned to adjust
revs and gear shifting to avoid this feedback, it's the single-most
disappointing aspect of this otherwise charming wagon.

Second, the harmonic damper on the short driveshaft is twice the mass of
your auto dampers. So, the rubber spokes work harder and fracture more
readily. Because the manual trans TDs are relatively few, it's been
*extremely* difficult to find replacement dampers (MB does not sell them
without the full driveshaft). If the juddering was bad with the damper
intact, it's unbearable with no damper at all.

Third, in my wagon, the gearing is exceptionally long-legged. This is a
car built for cruising the autobahns, not suburbia. So, to stay within
the 50kph urban speed limits here, it's necessary to jockey up and down
from 3rd to 4th gear all the time, to keep the dreaded feedback at bay.

Apart from these issues, and the normal aches and pains of late
adolescence, this wagon is marvellous.

how to remove/replace the vents on the dash of the 123 chassis?

One grasps the plastic collar (and hose barb) on the back
side and twists firmly, while holding the front to keep it
from twisting too. That releases the four snap locks
that detented into it, then it just pulls off the back,
letting the body come out the front. There is a wavy spring

Re: [MBZ] Weird attack of sluggishness - W123 300TD

2008-10-03 Thread Peter Frederick
Sounds a lot like a plugged tank screen --as the fuel level gets low,
all the slop collects in the bottom of the tank. Driving on the
highway pulls huge amounts of fuel through the filters, even though
you aren't using much, so the screen plugs and fuel delivery drops
way down. As the lift pump slows, fuel collect in the filters and
you have normal power.

Time to remove and clean the tank, and replace the screen.

DON'T forget to replace all pieces of rubber hose between the tank
and the main fuel filter, or else you might still have the
problem. The hose can look perfect and let air in the lines, but
that is generally about the same effect as having a plugged fuel
filter. Your symptoms are more aligned with Max Dillon's remedy. It
is easier, so I'd try it first!

[MBZ] Hammie update

2008-10-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Finished
up the gauge pod and put it back in place. The cable for the idle
control seems to have loosened adequately. I did managed to
accidentally pull a wire loose from the driver's side speaker. Its got
round posts (feels like it anyway) and somebody put a square connector
on the wire. I got it wedged back in place adequately I think. The
stereo seems haunted, sometimes it won't acknowledge stations at all
(plays just static), sometimes it will. Its been all static for a month
or so. Today I unplugged it and plugged it back in and it works again,
weird. I'm fairly confident its the headunit (a JVC) thats the problem.
If it continues I'll replace it. Doing so will allow me to correctly
wire the power antenna too, the problem there is somebody snipped that
wire at the stereo so I can't easily tap it.
I also took a crack at
the glowplugs. Had to replace all 4 to find that #1 was the lights out
issue, it was obviously oily and the others weren't. Still the last
time I did this I was in the parking lot of our apartment in the dark
at about 20F... Even doing it in the yard on a 60 degree day its the
sort of job that you think is never going to end. I have to stoop about
halfway over and my back just screams the whole time...
Tomorrow its brakes...

My friend's Decathlon probably has removable cushions and I haven't asked
whether he has a chute but I'm sure he has no chute training. Long ago when I
was
building hours for my commercial license, I took a ten hour aerobatic course
(just a taste, of course) in a Citabria and I'm pretty sure we pulled the
cushions to make room for the chutes. The plane had quick release door hinge
pins
so we theoretically could get out for some reason but I also knew squat about
chutes.

I never managed to pull the wings off so we didn't have to escape the thing.

So now I have to check the main and inline filters, unclog the tank vent

I didn't mention the antipatriot act, I just picked a couple of major violations
which were written by Senators currently on presidential tickets. Rifle ban is a
direct attack on the 2nd Amendment, free speech ban a direct attack on the 1st.

BTW, in the last week or two, Obama's campaign site added a pledge to renew the
ban on scary looking rifles with no functional distinction, and make it
permanent. Yet he claims that everybody who calls him anti-gun is lying and
needs to be silenced. I guess I could include Obama's efforts to silence his
critics, via threats of lawsuit and/or prosecution, as the worst campaign
attempt at killing the 1st, but it's not legislation, just Chicago style
politics. Obama's never been a fan of fair elections, that's why he sued to have
all the other Dems removed from a primary ballot to insure his win.

Andrew

I'm just catching up with this thread. Sorry if I'm covering old ground.

I've experienced a similar power loss on the highway. My wagon simply
ran out of grunt without prior warning of any kind.

It was indeed algae in the fuel. Now I have a cheap clear plastic fuel
filter fitted inline in the engine bay where I can inspect it regularly.

Finding a biocide was a bit tricky at the time -- the fuel companies
couldn't help (didn't want to admit they might have water in their fuel)
-- but I'm sure the treatments are more readily available now.

So, check your fuel filters!

The federal budget goes up by 25% or more, all sorts of crap that could not have

Alex,

Thanks for the endorsment and the message board tip. Repair Clinic has a
decent price for the part (about $75) but I've found a seller on Ebay with a
$45 price and $3 S&H.

ALDA = square thing on top of IP towards the rear, may have an adjuster screw on
top, or may have a tamperproof cap with the screw under it. The hose goes from
the ALDA to the firewall where there's a switchover valve intended to vent the
pressure to atmosphere if the turbo goes overboost.
If that hose doesn't build pressure at the ALDA, the car will run like a non
turbo. With vacuum in the hose, (don't ask me how that could happen) it might be
weaker than a 240D.

BTW, while you're poking around the IP, take a look at the hand primer pump.
Does it have a white disk at the top for a handle, or a long black cap over it
that serves as a pump handle?
The old ones with the white disk can leak air into the IP and cause severe loss
of power. Unscrew the knurled disk to unlock the pump, and give it a few
strokes. Does diesel fuel leak out?

Here's what the new one looks like, it's upside down in the picture:

Yeah, that's a great feature I forgot about. It's like an online

Andrew,

If the tank vent is plugged, at highway speed a vacuum will build in the tank
because the time-rate of fuel consumption is high.

When you slow down and engine RPM drops, the fuel lift pump cannot overcome the
vacuum in the tank and so your engine is starved of fuel.

Test: Drive at high speed long enough to cause the condition based on past
experience, then pull over and quickly remove the fuel cap. If you hear a
'whoosh' of air, the tank vent is plugged.

2008-10-03 Thread Rich Thomas
The Clintonoid Frank Raines when he took over said his objective was to
increase holdings to $1T ($10E12), a fair chunk of change. He worked it
hard, made millions for himself til bailing under less than pristine
circumstances. Criminal investigations are proceeding.

I worked for Enron, Enron was an employer of mine, and this thing is no
Enron -- it is about 100X bigger if you can imagine that. The
criminality involved pervades our whole political system, and is being
visited on the American people, and indeed a large part of the world, by
people whose objectives were little different from the smartest guys in
the room. In this case they are our elected representatives, their
hangers-on, and greed-motivated financiers. It is not unexpected that
any of them would behave in this way, it is what they do. What is
unexpected is the scope and magnitude of it all, a lot of it by people
who have been entrusted to behave otherwise. In retrospect it is not
too surprising though, given the mindsets and characteristics of many
who were intimately involved.

(and then places blame on those for failing.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aSKSoiNbnQY0

It's a pretty interesting article. Here is the most important part:

"What happened next was extraordinary. For the first time in history, a serious
Fannie and Freddie reform bill was passed by the Senate Banking
Committee. The bill gave a regulator power to
crack down, and would have required the companies to eliminate their investments in risky
assets.

Different World

If that bill had become law, then the world today would be different. In 2005,
2006 and 2007, a blizzard of terrible mortgage paper fluttered out of the
Fannie and Freddie clouds, burying many of our oldest and most venerable
institutions. Without their checkbooks keeping the market liquid and buying up
excess supply, the market would likely have not existed.

But the bill didn't become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it on a
party-line vote in the committee, signaling that this would be a partisan
issue. Republicans, tied in knots by the tight Democratic opposition, couldn't
even get the Senate to vote on the matter.

That such a reckless political stand could have been taken by the Democrats was
obscene even then. Wallison
wrote at the time:
``It is a classic case of socializing the risk while privatizing the profit. The
Democrats and the few Republicans who oppose portfolio limitations could not possibly
do so if their constituents understood what they were doing.''

Mounds of Materials

Now that the collapse has occurred, the roadblock built by Senate Democrats in
2005 is unforgivable. Many who opposed the bill doubtlessly did so for
honorable reasons. Fannie and Freddie provided mounds of materials defending
their practices. Perhaps some found their propaganda convincing.

But we now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and Freddie, including Barack
Obama,
 Hillary
Clinton
 and Christopher
Dodd,
have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the years."

There has been a lot of talk about who is to blame for this crisis. A look back
at the story of 2005 makes the answer pretty clear.

Oh, and there is one little footnote to the story that's worth keeping in mind while Democrats point fingers between now and
Nov. 4: Senator John
McCain
was one of the three cosponsors of S.190, the bill that would
have averted this mess.

There is a (likely formerly) clear plastic tube that runs from a fitting
on the very back of the intake manifold, right up against the firewall,
across the firewall thence to the ALDA, a boost pressure signal conveyor
that controls how much fuel gets squirted, I guess. Or an overboost
protection signal or something that controls how much fuel gets squirted
(or not). Anyway, if that thing gets clogged (likely stuff that gets
stuck in the little fitting on the intake manifold, inside) you have to
take it off that fitting and then stick a wire or something in there to
sorta ream it out. Or maybe that hose is cracked, broken, looks like
some Home Depot rigid poly would work OK as it is just a hose, and the
Benz part number is obscure. It takes about 5 min to do that, worth a try.

institutions.

The Democrats and the few Republicans who oppose portfolio limitations could
not possibly do so if their constituents understood what they were doing.''

But we now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and Freddie,
including Barack
Obama,
 Hillary
Clinton
 and Christopher
Dodd,
have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the
years."

There has been a lot of talk about who is to blame for this crisis. A look back
at the story of 2005 makes the answer pretty clear.

Oh, and there is one little footnote to the story that's worth keeping in mind
while Democrats point fingers between now and Nov. 4: Senator John
McCain
was one of the three cosponsors of
S.190, the bill that
would have averted this mess.
Donald H. Snook
1990 Volvo 240DL (with a McCain sticker on it).

Yup - the next morning the paper had a story about the seasonal lake
turn-over that happens every fall. Top 2-4 inches of water get cooled
at night enough to fall to the bottom, displacing the algae filled
(from a nice long summer of warmth and sun) bottom water which rises.

However, the more nutrients, the more algae the water can support.

OK Don wrote:

There is the minor discrepancy where he's decrying the lack of free
market principles, when it's those uncontrolled free markets that got
us into this mess.

I think it's uncontrolled government meddling that got us into this mess.
As stated in an email I received from a Congressman on 9-25:

Dear Friends:

The financial meltdown the economists of the Austrian School predicted has
arrived.

We are in this crisis because of an excess of artificially created credit at the
hands of the Federal Reserve System. The solution being proposed? More
artificial credit by the Federal Reserve. No liquidation of bad debt and
malinvestment is to be allowed. By doing more of the same, we will only continue
and intensify the distortions in our economy - all the capital misallocation,
all the malinvestment - and prevent the market's attempt to re-establish
rational pricing of houses and other assets.

Last night the president addressed the nation about the financial crisis. There
is no point in going through his remarks line by line, since I'd only be
repeating what I've been saying over and over - not just for the past several
days, but for years and even decades.

Still, at least a few observations are necessary.

The president assures us that his administration "is working with Congress to
address the root cause behind much of the instability in our markets." Care to
take a guess at whether the Federal Reserve and its money creation spree were
even mentioned?

We are told that "low interest rates" led to excessive borrowing, but we are not
told how these low interest rates came about. They were a deliberate policy of
the Federal Reserve. As always, artificially low interest rates distort the
market. Entrepreneurs engage in malinvestments - investments that do not make
sense in light of current resource availability, that occur in more temporally
remote stages of the capital structure than the pattern of consumer demand can
support, and that would not have been made at all if the interest rate had been
permitted to tell the truth instead of being toyed with by the Fed.

Not a word about any of that, of course, because Americans might then discover
how the great wise men in Washington caused this great debacle. Better to keep
scapegoating the mortgage industry or "wildcat capitalism" (as if we actually
have a pure free market!).

Speaking about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the president said: "Because these
companies were chartered by Congress, many believed they were guaranteed by the
federal government. This allowed them to borrow enormous sums of money, fuel the
market for questionable investments, and put our financial system at risk."

Doesn't that prove the foolishness of chartering Fannie and Freddie in the first
place? Doesn't that suggest that maybe, just maybe, government may have
contributed to this mess? And of course, by bailing out Fannie and Freddie,
hasn't the federal government shown that the "many" who "believed they were
guaranteed by the federal government" were in fact correct?

Then come the scare tactics. If we don't give dictatorial powers to the Treasury
Secretary "the stock market would drop even more, which would reduce the value
of your retirement account. The value of your home could plummet." Left unsaid,
naturally, is that with the bailout and all the money and credit that must be
produced out of thin air to fund it, the value of your retirement account will
drop anyway, because the value of the dollar will suffer a precipitous decline.
As for home prices, they are obviously much too high, and supply and demand
cannot equilibrate if government insists on propping them up.

It's the same destructive strategy that government tried during the Great
Depression: prop up prices at all costs. The Depression went on for over a
decade. On the other hand, when liquidation was allowed to occur in the equally
devastating downturn of 1921, the economy recovered within less than a year.

The president also tells us that Senators McCain and Obama will join him at the
White House today in order to figure out how to get the bipartisan bailout
passed. The two senators would do their country much more good if they stayed on
the campaign trail debating who the bigger celebrity is, or whatever it is that
occupies their attention these days.

F.A. Hayek won the Nobel Prize for showing how central banks' manipulation of
interest rates creates the boom-bust cycle with which we are sadly familiar. In
1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, he described the foolish policies
being pursued in his day - and which are being proposed, just as destructively,
in our own:

Instead of furthering the inevitable liquidation of the maladjustments brought
about by the boom during the last three years, all conceivable means have been
used to prevent that readjustment from taking place; and one of these means,
which has been repeatedly tried though

it's a very funny thing to me, how people think. people always ask "how

By the same token, how can someone be IRS or DEA? no one ever asks that
question, and this is the key to understanding why all war is silly.

But, the Decathlon is an aerobatic aircraft and the seats do allow for a
backpack if required (when doing aerobatics) which was not the case in this
instance. Anyway, running full tilt into a rock wall is not going to be
something in

[MBZ] Sheesh

A couple months ago when I went to Iowa I left the lights on on my 190D. 2 days
later you can imagine how dead the battery was.

Yesterday when I returned from Burbank I realized I'd left the dome light on.
As my grandfather would have said "Jumpin Jesus, bald headed Christ".

So now I know that the battery in my 190D is good enough to leave the dome
light on for nearly 4 days and still start the car. Not with any extra mind you
but the car did indeed start.

Yeah battery life is definately shortened I'm sure. Worst part is the battery
isn't even a year old.

Jim, you really are a genius. Just don't let it go to your head.

My mechanic says to check for algae in the tank, or a clogged inline fuel
filter. The awkward part is that to make the problem appear, I need to
drive at high speeds for X minutes, and the risk getting rear ended when I
slow down to a crawl while on the (uphill) exit ramp. What I don't get is
why the car performs flawlessly on hilly terrain until I take it out for a
60+ mph spin. Which of the suggested underlying causes best dovetails with
this observed behavior?

Which car?  If an 85 190D, the www.fueleconomy.gov site says 26mpg
city and 35mpg highway.
Taking those as an example, the shorter route is more like city
driving, so 21 miles at 26mpg =
0.8 gal.  The 25 mile route sounds like highway driving, so 25 miles
at 35mpg = 0.7 gal.

If the shorter route is partial steady state driving (1/2 mile
constant speed between stop signs), and there are some stops on the
longer route (getting to and from the highway), I'd guess that it's a
wash.
Take the fastest route and forget the fuel difference. It's too small
to mess with.
