Re: [MBZ] OT: AA batteries
If you wanted to go to all the trouble to save on AA batteries you'd just get some NiMH rechargeable and be done with it. I've always wondered how they manage to sell so many disposable AA batteries despite their ridiculous cost, and environmental impact. I'm sure that 6v batteries ARE made up of smaller cells, but which size might depend on the manufacturer. Also, they're probably very low capacity and would die almost instantly in most high drain devices. Tyler On Feb 22, 2009, at 5:46 PM, Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: Anyone ever try this? Each of the four 1.5 V cells has that capacity. That's 11,000 to 13,000 mAh. Or about the equivalent of 5 or 6 ultra-high-capacity NiMH cells. Re: [MBZ] European Headlights
Thanks to all who replied - I hadn't considered the difference in RHD Vs LHD light pattern - I remember well watching videos of european 911s driving in UK with bits of black tape on the headlight lens to modify the pattern. I should have known. Anyway - I was thinking about a pair of european headlights for my 1991 300D W124. Although they look better I believe the lights provide better lighting also. What's needed probably is the european metal headlight unit so higher wattage bulbs can be used and not melt the plastic used in the US units. But I'll sure you are right about any UK wrecker with some RHD headlights will likely almost give them away. Any list members in UK want to find some inexpensive HLs for me? ;-) Thx agn - Sincerely, Larry T (74 911, 91 300D 2.5T) www.youroil.net Oil Analysis Kits Porsche Posters/Weber parts Test Results - http://members.rennlist.com/oil/ http://www.scamfreetop10.com/1233.html . - Original Message - From: TE ban...@carolina.rr.com To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' mercedes@okiebenz.com; 'Banned List' ban...@okiebenz.com Sent: Sunday, February 22, 2009 11:34 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] European Headlights Speaking of European headlights, I just retrofitted my C140 (S500 coupe) with a brand new pair of European OEM Bosch Xenon headlight units. With the help of WIS and a little ingenuity, I now have probably the best upgrade I have ever done; that includes the W126 Bosch euros I installed in my 300SDL. Overall, it was a fairly easy install and the city light hookup was similar to that of other European headlights. The one downside is that the city light bulbs (W5W) still give off that yellow glow even with the Xenon's on. In an effort not to look ricey, I will probably have to live with it; although I do have a pair of Philips BlueVision W5W bulbs on the way from the UK. Hopefully they are tasteful and pure white but if they look even the slightest bit blue, I will keep the original W5W bulb in. I know the whole blue tint argument, but these are 5W city lights we are talking about so I'm hardly worried about lumen output. On the subject of comparing European headlights in a RHD vehicle versus LHD, the only difference in the two units is the lens. The refractory pattern on the glass is different for the aforementioned setups. For European headlights on a W123, W124 or W126, the lenses are fairly cheap compared to a W140 or C140. If you can get the headlight units for a steal, it still may be worth buying them and changing the lens. On another note, if anyone needs a complete W126 headlight switch bezel with vacuum adjuster switch, I have two available. It definitely compliments the complete W126 European headlight setup and is great when actually used for the level adjustment. I also have 3 European warning triangle brackets available for the W126 and 3 available for all other models (W123, W124, W140, etc.) Inquire for prices. Be advised, if you have to drive home with the headlights you may not make it as you will be running on the battery only so try and get home or to a shop before dark. Even in daylight if you have to jump it to start you may be driving without brake lights. Use caution. On the positive side, a new regulator assy. and all was well. A good thing to check before you spend the money on the regulator, if you can, is condition of the slip rings. If you have a mirror and flashlight look in the hole when you get the regulator out. I once had an alternator that the slip rings were really badly worn and in that case you should probably just get a Bosch rebuilt. I don't recommend using a McParts rebuild if you have a choice. [MBZ] OT: Trailer tires
So I've got this little snowmobile trailer, 1972 Cox, rated for 1 ton. I've had it for a few years now and its been a good enough trailer although its only been on relatively short trips (maybe 150 miles round trip). The other day I was prepping it for a trip and it occured to me to check tire pressure, which believe it or not I'd never done before. It was at ~30psi, the sidewalls say max weight is at 90psi. I pumped 'em up to 45psi before I started to get nervous (no experience with this really). On the road it seemed like the trailer tracked a little better and pulled a little easier. It stands to reason that with extra pressure there'd be less rolling resistance... So I'm thinking to go up to 50psi or more and see how it does but thought I might try asking somebody who might actually know what they're talking about. Seems like I've chronically under inflated these tires. I've had 2 tire issues over the years, once one tire shredded on the road and once a tire was flat in the morning but I didn't notice and rolled it off the rim pulling the trailer. Other than that they've been fine. Comments? -Curt -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] Alternator (and other) lamps are on
One. It's a little black crescent shaped cover on the back of the alternator. Takes two straight bladed screws to remove it. When you take out the old one, you'll see what everyone is talking about, as the brush holder/brushes are a part of the unit, and there won't be much of anything left of the brushes. The new one goes in the opposite of how the old one came out - sort of put it at a 45 degree angle and rotate it into place so the brushes seat on the slip rings, then tighten the screws. There will be some pressure from the new brushes that will give some resistance to getting it in place, so be prepared. An offset screwdriver works really nice in this situation. You can do this from underneath the car if you get it up on ramps or jackstands. It's all of a half hour job, and much of that is just getting everything together. Re: [MBZ] OT: AA batteries
Except in applications that need a long shelf life. The new EnergyOn type NiMH cells are better, but alkaline still rules if you want more than 6 month shelf life. That's true. I use NIMH batteries in low drain devices, but rotate them out once a month or so with charged ones such that they never go dead. I find this more convenient than waiting for alkalines to go dead, because I never have a device with an unexpectedly dead battery. This is especially nice for bicycle lights, GPS, etc. I can understand alkalines for REALLY low drain devices like remote controls, smoke detectors, alarm clocks, and other things that can last years on a set, and don't cause a serious problem when they run dead. Well, a typical 6V lantern battery is rated for 11-13 Ah. Each of the four 1.5 V cells has that capacity. That's 11,000 to 13,000 mAh. Or about the equivalent of 5 or 6 ultra-high-capacity NiMH cells. Or about 11 or 12 standard capacity NiMH or alkaline cells. I didn't realize that a 6V lantern battery had only four cells. I was thinking that if they really were AAs (or some other small cell) in parallel they'd probably be cheap dry cells, and nowhere near the 2,500mAh or so modern AAs can store. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT: Trailer tires
It can get bouncy running max pressure and light loads. I might consider 3/4 pressure for half load, or maybe even 1/2 pressure for a long return trip with an empty trailer. Are those tires rated for a lot more load than the trailer, or are we talking about tiny 4.80x8 snowmobile trailer tires? My Hobie Cat trailer runs those dinky things, and I keep them inflated to the max, even though the whole boat/trailer weighs about the same as an individual tire's max capacity. My tires are only load range B, so I think they are only rated for about 780lb/tire at 60psi or some such, the Cs would take more like 90psi. The rig weighs about 750lb and I've never been tempted to run it below 60psi. Re: [MBZ] Alternator (and other) lamps are on
Starting to think this might be the alternator itself after all. I drove the car over the noon hour and though the alternator lamp was initially lit it went out after a few minutes of driving. When I arrived at lunch and parked, I noticed a rattling sound accompanied by intermittent squeeking. I opened the hood and it seemed to be coming from the alternator. The belts were tight but it looked like the alternator pully was wobbling a little. Sort of hard to tell in that setting, but before I go buy a new regulator I am going to remove the belts and see if the alternator spins freely and has any signs of worn out bearings. Thx for the info John - What what I can tell, the Euro lights don't look much different from the US lights - based on what my lights look like at least - so I'm guessing the difference is in the bulbs each can take - right? Re: [MBZ] OT: Trailer tires
The correct pressure is load-dependent. Too high and you get excessive center-wear on the tread. Too low (worse) and you get sidewall heating and side-wear on the tread, and early tire failure. The pickup truck tires are rated at 80#, but they only have that when the camper's on it. I think 50# is more of an unloaded rating, or 65# as a compromise. I believe the owner's manual (that un-read rag!) actually has a chart in it. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT: Trailer tires
Yeah, replying to my own post. A search for 4.80x8 tires shows I've probably got load range B tires with max load at ~580# @90psi. Also most websites I went to said to always run max inflation on trailer tires unless theres a problem with ride (like pogo stick bouncing). One site said that 3 years was the max lifespan for trailer tires It looks like load range C costs ~$10 more per tire. One of my tires has fairly significant weather checking so I think in the fall (trailer basically only gets used in the winter time, its a snowmobile trailer after all) I'll switch everything but the spare (which has lived inside and looks perfect) to loadrange C. Then maybe next year I'll change the spare over... That should give me a little more confidence... For awhile I was carrying two spares all the time even though I've only had a few blowouts. I hate seeing trailers sitting forlornly on the side of the highway... -Curt --- On Mon, 2/23/09, Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Trailer tires To: Diesel List mercedes@okiebenz.com Date: Monday, February 23, 2009, 4:51 PM Dinky, In fact I think they're rated for LESS than the max capacity of the trailer although I'm sure I've seriously overloaded them many times. Mitch. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] Timing chain switch
It is usually the top guides that get cooked over the years because there is more heat at the top of the motor. The tensioner should be alright as it is tensioning rail that gets the wear as opposed to the whole assembly. Matter of seeing if you can inspect it from the top. However I know bugger all about the MB Diesel engines. Hendrik Wilton Strickland wrote: Me, too, but what's all this talk 'bout just running a new chain in behind the old one. What do I REALLY need? Re: [MBZ] Growly and vibrating tandem pump 300TE
OK so I put a new seal kit in the tandem pump but the noise is still there, new hose from MB is 570 oz beans and they come from Germany. The reason I am talking hose is that I rebuilt the original high pressure expansion hose after it blew a hole in it. Everything was sweet for a while but then this noise started. My plan now is to take the guts out of the tandem pump (the little pistons out of the SLS part and vanes out of the PS part) to see if this eliminates the noise. I have tried to find a SH hose but have not have much luck locally. Does anyone see a problem with removing those parts out of the pump and then running it? Hendrik who is being driven bonkers by this noise Loren Faeth wrote: Both fluids full up? Growling is usually cavitation from lack of fluid. If fluids are full, start looking for a pump, I guess. The pumps can be rebuilt, but getting the new seal in is a bear. I ruined one, so my rebuild cost me $160 for the 2 kits. To get a kit, you have to have all the info off the pump plate as well as the VIN. At 07:47 PM 2/5/2009, you wrote: The tandem pump in my 89 300TE makes a growling noisy and vibrates at 1300rpm, fine at idle and above 1500rpm. Got the missus to turn the steering wheel while I held the motor at 1300rpm but made no difference to the noise. Power steering is fine and ride level control seems to be working OK, fluid is being pumped as I can see it flowing back into the reservoir. Is this noise an indication that the pump is heading south, are there any other tests I can do? I eliminated the AC compressor but it may be the water pump but like I said the tandem pump is vibrating, whilst the water pump is not. Ahh well the good news is that it is not the motor or the gearbox because when the fan belt is removed the noise is gone. Unfortunately I can't run components individually, this is an advantage of the multi belt set up. It would appear that this person is new to ebay and as such has a bit of a learning curve. However blowing 7.5K plus for an old 220D is not outrageous if it is in very good condition, remember that website with the old 123 Diesels that went for ~18K (presumably prior to the banks shutting their doors). Re: [MBZ] Timing chain switch
I've not replaced the chain, rails, and tensioner on a 603 in situ, but have on the 61x series. There is a test in the manual for the tensioner, IIRC - something like place it in a coffee can full of oil, and see if you can compress it - should be really hard to do (I'm not sure about this - RTFM, don't take my word for it). The tensioning rail was easy to replace. The others would require removing the front case. I only replaced the tensioning rail, being lazy. Peening the new link was the most difficult part of the job, because I had no help. No 16's didn't really appear widespread till the late 90's, those are the stock mags used from about 84 (14 inch) until the early 90's (15 inch). Re: [MBZ] Alternator (and other) lamps are on
You may also have an internal short causing trouble, not just a dead regulator. If the light gets brighter with higher rpm, it's not the regulator. Happened to me just a few months after I put the new regulator in, so I put the dud back in the old alternater when I swapped it. Good thing, as my new 300D needed one shortly after I got it. Re: [MBZ] European Headlights
I will second that -- the DEPOs I got for my old 300D were a vast improvment over the DOT ones. Might even have been able to avoid the damned wood rodent that caused me to get new headlights in the first place. May not last as long or be as sturdy as Hella or Bosch, but they work just fine and have the level adjuster if you want to go to the trouble of getting the replacement bezel for the headlight switch and adjuster wheel and running some vac lines. Re: [MBZ] European Headlights
Don't look anything alike at all at closer than quick glance. On the W124 (and W018 at least, probably everything else too) there is a one piece glass cover for the entire assembly, not a headlight with a plastic ring around it. The reflector is different, giving much more light spread on the road directly in front of the bumper and there is a dead zone in the beam to the upper left, where oncoming traffic is. Far better distance illumination on high beams, but again there is a dark zone on the upper left to avoid glare into the eyes of drivers going the other way. All round much better. Note that 94 or 95 W124's came with Euro lenses on some models, and these are highly desirable since the headlight wipers work. Can't use the DOT headlight wipers on the Euro assemblies, as they are on the opposite side and rotate the other direction. Only if the guides have slots worn in them. You cannot reliably seal the front cover unless you remove the head. I've not seen significant wear on mine, at 245,000 miles. Re: [MBZ] Timing chain switch
I dont' know about the tensioner slide, but to remove the other one you have to pull the front cover, and that really means pulling the head since the head gasket seals the front cover to the front of the head. No need to replace them if they are not badly worn, though, and the 603 doesn't wear guides much. Re: [MBZ] '94 or '95 W124 Headlight Lenses/Wipers [was Re: European Headlights]
Euro headlights on a W124 have a single (removable no less) glass cover over the entire headlamp -- from the parking/turn signal lamp to the grill. No plastic surround at all, the glass extends from the trim at the bottom to the hood and from turn signal to grill, including over the fog lamp. Wiper pivot is toward the outside, not the inside, and the wiper is longer so that it will wipe the fog light area as well as the headlamp. Impossible to mistake one for the other, especially if the DOT plastic cover over the fog lamp has not been replaced by now, it will be yellowed, dirty, and usually cracked. I've done wheel myself, but they are a royal PITA to deal with. I took my old 15 hole wheels on my 300SDL, stripped them, sanded them, primed them, sanded them again, applied adhesion promoter, sanded again and applied the paint. It held for a while, but the first time they go dirty for longer than 2 weeks they are shot. My advice would be to send them to Prince Wheel Service here in Monroe, NC. The guy does great work refinishing and straightening wheels for the local MB and BMW dealerships. He only charges $100 per wheel and will either apply a baked powder coat or traditional paint.
