Except that IRT is in the Northwest Territories of Canada.

As an aside if you watch the credits at the end of Ice Road Truckers carefully
you'll see that the online editor is H. Scott Randol. I know Scott pretty well,
I've had him in class a couple times. This last time he and another guy were
out in MA for a whole week. They're from Burbank and it was a pretty tough
weather swap for them (these are post guys, they don't run camera and don't go
to Canada for the show) but they had these really nice heavy parkas. It turns
out that so many of the production people they were sending up to Canada are
from California and didn't have good cold weather gear the production company
had Colombia make up a line of Ice Road Truckers parkas and heavy pants and
whatnot. So when these guys needed to come to class in the winter they grabbed
a couple.

I'll be seeing them again for class next month so I made it known that for
bonus points on the test I'd really dig one of those parkas...

one of the breeders living there) and said That thing does pretty good! I
allowed as how it was okay for a 1964. His face lit right up, then I pointed
out its a 7 horse and he just couldn't belive it. On the next pass I lifted the
plow as I hit the snowbank and stood the thing right up on its ass. The
snowbanks here are pretty high now but the Cub has very little issue with them.
I do need to get some new rear wheels and tires though, mine are correct for a
later machine and while the wider tires are easy on the grass they don't get as
good traction (even with chains) on the snow as I'd like...

When I was a kid the neighbors had a battery powered electric mower, Case I
think. Looked like a regular rear engine rider with no motor. The old guy (he
was about a million years old when we moved there, didn't die for 20 more
years...) kept that thing going. His granddaughter and husband bought the
place. The new owner mows lawns on the side and has a big commercial walk
behind. He asked if we wanted the mower but the bug hadn't yet caught me and I
let it go by.

The rebuild kit is cheap and not too difficult. A disposable fuel filter

tested simply with a Mity-Vac or other vacuum tester.

I made a homebuilt tool to start the impossible-to-reach nut out of a piece
of copper tubing long enough to reach in and a short piece of rubber hose on
the end of the tubing to grip the nut.

So about a year ago I put a (new) used brake booster on the 300TD
after spending a lot of time chasing a no-brake-boost problem, and
finally decided it was the brake booster after huge amounts of effort on
that. Put on a new one and it was fine. So a few weeks ago same
problem, and no shutoff, I figured the used booster I put on had crapped
out too. Ordered one from the list mom, put it on last weekend, still
no brake boost. sh*t. So today I put the previous one back on and
started chasing vac problems again with the vac meter, and by isolating
things it seems to be related to the lock system (they have never really
worked) or something else not very critical, maybe in the HVAC system
(which is not working either for some time. I plugged off one tee going
to the locks, have a bit better vac now but still not what it should be,
and the car will shut off when I rev it a bit. Brakes seem to be OK,
but I gotta bleed them now, again.

So Occam's razor proves correct once again, I should have taken a look
at that first. But I am really good now at changing brake boosters and
master cylinders, in particular that last nut way up under the pedal
bracket that you have to contort to get at.

Re: [MBZ] Greetings: Thanks and Introduction!

2009-03-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Thanks for the warm welcome!

I have been with this list only about a month, but am a long-time
participant in the diesel-benz list. I do most of the maintenance of the
family fleet.

I have been retired about a year. I live in SW Washington, moved from the
east coast 17 years ago. I also maintain the family fleet of computers,
primarily ThinkPads, the Mercedes-Benz of laptops. I am pleased to see that
a lot of the OT posts also hit my interests. I enjoy playing with tools in
my workshop/garage. I especially enjoy working with metal.

I have been enjoying this list a lot so far, and gotten a lot out of it.

[MBZ] Blower motor blowing fuse, 85 TD

2009-03-08 Thread harry watkins
Kaleb, do you have a used assembly? Rusty's site shows $484. I tried to use
the link at the bottom and although the site page opens, the links do not.

Jerry called today about the fuse blowing. With it unplugged at the motor,
fuse doesn't blow. A jumper wire to the motor will run it, but wire gets very
hot.

Are there replace bearings or just the motor available at a cheaper price?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] Greetings: Thanks and Introduction!

2009-03-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Thanks Harry!

Favorite tool:

That's a tough one! Depends a lot on the job at hand.

I have a pair (one straight, one Phillips) of tiny Craftsman offset ratchet
screwdrivers that will really help in tight spots. It's the right tool for
changing out voltage regulators on the W123/W126.

I always carry a folding pocket-clip knife with a well-sharpened blade.
Buck, Spyderco, Gerber or Schrade. I like AUS-8 steel. If I'm travelling I
like to have a good Leatherman tool with me. It's surprising what you can
do with one.

I have a Unimat SL-1000 in my shop. It is a jewel of a tool.

A Makita cordless drill with NiCad batteries has been in my toolbox for 20
years and still holds a good charge!

Further afield, and apropos of grape shot, I have owned several Remington
870 shotguns. They just work.

The tool I use most frequently is probably this IBM T40 laptop. I recently
saw some pictures of the interior of the space station. There were 1/2
dozen ThinkPads in the work area I saw. It's the right stuff.

Oh, and BTW: I am not above reaching for a Vise Grip when I'm beyond caring
if I round off a bolt head!

[MBZ] OT: DTV antenna, homemade

2009-03-08 Thread Loren Faeth
I just finished and tried out a $0.00 out of pocket homemade DTV
antenna. I am quite pleased with its performance, although SWMBO
decreed that it will not be in our house where it can be seen. I
guess I will hang it in the attic and run a cable down to the TV.

To be honest, I used 10 new 3/4 wood screws and 10 new #10 or #12
washers. It would cost me a little to replace them. A chunk of
redwood I salvaged off our old porch torn down 8 yrs ago, and I had
the antenna - coax dongle and I used the thin hangers from the cleaners.

Instructions:http://cachefly.oreilly.com/make/television/04/DTV_Antenna_FINAL.pdf
from Make

I wanted to plane the old paint off the 1x4, but could not find my
electric plane, so i just used the stick as is.

Why does DTV require a special antenna when it's using the same
frequency as analog TV? This is simple physics, f/234 = 1/4~ length of
the antenna, these things don't change based on the medium of transport
(i.e. digital/analog/morse code/FM/AM/SSB/packet etc).

Because they have moved most of the frequencies to UHF - the elements are
now 8' long.

I also made that antenna yesterday, worked MUCH better inside than the
single whip that came with the USB tuner for the laptop. Today I mounted it
32 ft. up on one of the HP loop supports, and got three more channels, all
solid reception.
I made mine out of aluminum clothsline wire that was left over from quad

keep all the junk around - it keeps getting re-cycled.

Almost forgot - the coax from the antenna is RG-62, stripped out from under
the computer room's raised floor during a clean-up phase a few years ago.
Old IBM terminal/controller stuff. It's the wrong impedance, but seems to
work well enough for reception. I did buy a $5.00 BNC to F adapter.

Hey,

Quick off topic. Does anybody travel for work? We've just been informed that
from now on we won't be getting any extra pay for weekend work, off shift work
or weekend travel. Previously we'd been given comp days for weekend travel and
differential pay for off-shift and weekend work.

I *think* I'm an exempt employee which makes this all nicely legal although
totally aggrevating. It doesn't affect me all that much but there are some
folks here that will be pissed. Has anybody delt with this sort of thing
before? Sounds like we're up the creek and short of leaving (not real likely in
this environment) we have no way to fight it.

We've basically been told this will happen or There will be layoffs...

[MBZ] Taking advantage of the weather.

2009-03-08 Thread E M
The weather isn't as good as in NC, but it's above freezing now. :-) Gave
the car a good wash today, waxed the wood, what little there is, and
shampooed the floor mats. I noticed one of the sills it a bit soft behind
the front right wheel. I think due to previous collision repairs that
weren't done to 100% Mercedes standards. The car does have a few little
surface spots here and there, but not bad for living through salty winters
for 20 years.

I just have to make a decision if I should put some money into this one once
the newer previously enjoyed car arrives, or should I part with it. As I go
over the car, I am adding to the list of things it should have to keep it in
proper Mercedes shape. It's probably at the point where it no longer makes
financial sense to make too many big expenditures on it, but when I see it
sitting there, all cleaned up, Jeez, I really do like that car! :-)

Anyone know if you can buy pre formed sections of the sill for replacement,
or must they all be fabricated from scratch. I know for old Porsches, there
are places that make a lot of the body panel bits up, but not sure about
Mercedes.

Well, the mats are drying, and if the weather holds, I'll pull the wheels
tomorrow and see what the winter has done to the brakes and rotors, and what
else needs to go on the to do list. hee hee.

[MBZ] A Work Associate is in the Fold (83 00D euro)

2009-03-08 Thread Bob Rentfro
A work associate just called and told me he bought an '83 300D euro, 192K
(not sure M's or Km's), $1500. Crank windows, manual hvac (cold AC), white
with blue cloth, operable sun roof, pretty much complete. Says the coolant
is green (seeping froma hairline crack on top hose nozzle), PO has the vac
lines on passenger side of firewall plugged, says it flares a little before
it kicks down when you tromp on it. Says it has a little vibration at
certain speeds.I'm sure he will have more to report to me after he drives it
a bit. He asked me to come and drive it next week, I already gave him the
Marshall Lecture (diesel purge, change ALL fuses, and drive it like you
STOLE it). I'm going to invite him into our world.

Kaleb, do you have blue cloth drivers seat? Got euro lights for that (he
say's they are cracked but they both work)?

Re: [MBZ] OT: DTV antenna, homemade

2009-03-08 Thread Tim C
Doesn't, but many of us were too lazy/cheap to put up a good antenna when the
rabbit ears were working passably. Since DTV is all-or-nothing we find
ourselves needing a higher-gain antenna to get the same stations.

Why does DTV require a special antenna when it's using the same
frequency as analog TV? This is simple physics, f/234 = 1/4~ length of
the antenna, these things don't change based on the medium of transport
(i.e. digital/analog/morse code/FM/AM/SSB/packet etc).

To be honest, I used 10 new 3/4 wood screws and 10 new #10 or #12

Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel

2009-03-08 Thread Peter Frederick
You must be compensated for work over 8 hrs per day/40 hrs per week
in any case, there are no exemptions from compensation. There IS an
exemption from overtime pay, but the employee must receive
compensation for all hours worked, and the employer MUST document them.

There is a common misconception floating about that salaried
employees don't get payed anything for work over the 8 hrs/day 40 hrs
per week, but that is not true (as WalMart and Radio Shack discoveredl

Time off counts, which may be OK for you and may not, but it IS
compensation and it's tangible. Not getting fired is NOT tangible
compensation.

If you document hours worked and are denied compensation (which I
strongly recommend, by the way), the Labor Relations Board will be
interested. You are in fact due compensation for each hour
worked. Not shift differential or weekend pay, necessarily.

Hey,

Quick off topic. Does anybody travel for work? We've just been
informed that from now on we won't be getting any extra pay for
weekend work, off shift work or weekend travel. Previously we'd
been given comp days for weekend travel and differential pay for
off-shift and weekend work.

I *think* I'm an exempt employee which makes this all nicely legal
although totally aggrevating. It doesn't affect me all that much
but there are some folks here that will be pissed. Has anybody delt
with this sort of thing before? Sounds like we're up the creek and
short of leaving (not real likely in this environment) we have no
way to fight it.

We've basically been told this will happen or There will be
layoffs...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel

2009-03-08 Thread John Freer
Peter,
I must kindly disagree, If you are classified as an Exempt Employee,
than there are no limitations on how many hours, days, weekends,
travel time, etc you spend at the job. There are no 8 hour days, 40
hour weeks. You are paid an annual salary and you work until the job
is done.

You are discussing Non Exempt employee status which, by the name,
implies that there are numerous rules that must be followed.

While I have quoted Federal regs, there may be various State
variations but the term Exempt and Non Exempt still apply.
Probably the Unions also have a say in this in some industries.

you need a blower motor? I dont know if I have one but I will sure look.

harry watkins wrote:

Kaleb, do you have a used assembly? Rusty's site shows $484. I tried to use

Jerry called today about the fuse blowing. With it unplugged at the motor,
fuse doesn't blow. A jumper wire to the motor will run it, but wire gets very
hot.

Are there replace bearings or just the motor available at a cheaper price?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Work travel

2009-03-08 Thread Tom Hargrave
In a non-union world, the difference between Exempt and Non-exempt is that
Exempt Employees are self directed don't punch a time clock while
Non-exempt Employees are directly supervised labor and do punch a time
clock. Exempt Employees are expected to be self motivated and even though
they have a direct Manager, are expected to get the job done. But this is
very general.

Some Exempt Employees are paid over time, usually at straight time rates but
some over time does not start until you cross 48 hours for the week.

Some companies consider 50 hours / week normal for Exempt and they build the
pay into the compensation package. Their HR department will tell you up
front that Saturdays, some Sundays and long hours are expected. If you don't
want the hours than its easy enough to say NO up front, even in today's
job climate. You might be surprised at what they counter with.

I've worked for organizations where I was classified as Exempt but they
still required me to be in the office from 8 to 5 even though I did not
punch a clock. I've also worked for organizations where I was expected to
fill out a time sheet and if I did not complete at least 50 hours / week and
show up most Saturdays, I was talked to about my commitment to the
company.

The most interesting negotiation I had was when I was a Quality Manager.
The Plant Manager called me into his office to chastise me for not working
Saturdays while all of his other Managers were working Saturdays. I
explained to him that if I could not trust my staff to do their jobs on
Saturdays then I had hired the wrong people. Then I asked him why his other
Managers were coming in every Saturday? He had nothing to say for about 3
minutes from then on the other Managers rotated Saturdays. I came in
Saturdays, but only for special projects.

I've also worked for companies where the Manager / Director was concerned
about any Exempt Employees working more than 40 hours / week. Even to the
point where some insisted that I accumulate comp time for any extra hours
spent during the week.

The Union world is a little more clear cut. If you are salary, you are
Exempt, if you are hourly you are Non-exempt. More often than not Salary
Exempt Employees get overtime pay at the straight rate or 1.5X pay. I've
worked in the Union world too and the work environment is really no
different.

These days, when I'm not selling kegging supplies at www.kegkits.com, I'm a
consultant who bills hourly for my services. I've been a consultant for 8
years - I design deploy custom SQL Server based database solutions for
small and not so small businesses.

Right now, I spend 2 - 3 days / week at one organization where the Exempt
Employees are expected to work what's required. I spend 1 - 2 days a week
at another organization where the office staff works 40 hours / week and
store Management works an average of 70 hours / week. But the Managers are
compensated with a bonus program that is tied to store efficiency and
profitability and they want to work 70 hours / week. The third organization
I spend 1 - 2 days / week at has 2 high level Managers who work what's
required - 40, 50, 70+ hours / week while the hourly Employees work 35 - 40
hours / week. No-one punches a time clock at the last one.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

200 foot or 2000 foot tower like OK Don would! Just propped it up in
the LR for a trial. Course, I figgered if OK Don went that high with
an antenna, he'd have to have a bigger antenna too. Could probably
get stations form Kamchatka or Moscow

I wanted to plane the old paint off the 1x4, but could not find my
electric plane, so i just used the stick as is.

Re: [MBZ] OT: DTV antenna, homemade

8 is more realistic for UHF. The standard large TV antenna usually was
based on 1/2~ (40 give or take per side for the longest elements) log
periodic array. Most of the single elements worked well to make a 2m
1/4~ beam. Trim the aluminum tube down to length, drill the 3/8 holes
through the old mast, and tap them in place with a sheet metal screw.
Add a basic L balun, tune, and we're up and running. I made one of
these nearly 20 years ago that measured out around 13.5dBi on an 8ft boom.

He probably meant 8.

Re: [MBZ] OT: DTV antenna, homemade

2009-03-08 Thread OK Don
I tried it propped up near the ceiling, and it was better than the whip, but
I got three more stations with it 32 ft. up the mast. I'm 25 to 30 miles
from the transmitters. I'm afraid that the receiver isn't up to the task of
DX work.
I suspect that the s/n ratio would be improved with a reflector behind the
array.
Yes - that was supposed to be 8 - silly shift key!
