I think that you can simply unscrew the sender and screw in the appropriate
pipe fitting to hook your gauge up to.

2009-05-18 Thread Jim Cathey
There is the locking rod on the lock assembly, not to be confused with
the
rod-like plastic appendage of the servo that snaps into the lock
mechanism.

This moves up and down inside the suction cup of the servo. I really
don't want to force it off...

Don't these have locking collars that pop out, releasing
the rod to be telescoped in and out to the right position,
then you push the locking collar in to secure it?

Or is that only the newer one-line jobs?

Re: [MBZ] Lexus Diesel

2009-05-18 Thread Peter Frederick
A Lexus is just a Toyota in fancy sheet metal -- the quintessential
"fake Mercedes".

Don't get me wrong, Toyotas are nice cars, and if I didn't do my own
work, I'd probably drive one, but a Lexus (or an Avalon) is nothing
like the old Crown I had. That car was a blast to drive, second to
none so far (more fun even than my 300D in good shape, although a bit
less stable). I could blast down the country road on my way home at
nearly double the speed limit and take the curves for the most part
with the throttle alone as the rear end nicely tucked on deceleration
and move out under acceleration (nice for four wheel drifts).

I've driven an Avalon, and while it's a competent transport device
and quite comfortable and quiet, it's NOT a Benz, and neither is a
Lexus -- not a single part is anything but standard Toyota.

In twenty more years they will all be junk -- no parts, and the
plastic is just as bad as GM.

The temptation to save money, combined with the fact that in most cases no

ensure that lots of well-meaning people are destroying their diesel Mercedes

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply.

I abolutely agree that svo/wvo is not for everyone.

However, keep in mind that in the northeast (of Canada, anyway), we only
have commercial access to B20 at best, due to climatic concerns with our
sustained low winter temps.

One could, of course brew one's own. But that is another issue.

Re: [MBZ] Seat Re-padding question

2009-05-18 Thread Peter Frederick
You can do an adequate job with some closed cell foam in multiple
layers, but since that rubberized matting (it's not really horsehair
any more) is molded to from the seating surface, you can only do the
seat bottom. The upper part is very, very difficult to shape, I've
tried.

Best course is to buy new pads.

That said, I used 3/8 closed cell foam with a double layer of egg-
crate sleeping bag mat with the "fingers" together to form a single
layer with one edge rolled over and sewn together to replace the pads
in my brother's 75 300D. Some extra bits are required to form the
raised sides of the seat pad -- works better on the rear seat than on
the front.

I had better luck making up new covers (service weight vinyl, which
is still there and looks pretty good 5 or 6 years later). I've got
leather for "real" covers if the car survives.

Pity; the analogy is perfect for that car and almost completely

it's a "low end' model and not too pretty although not as ugly as the Mondial.

As to the 914, I am quite familiar with it having bought a 914-6 new and
drove it for 13 years to the day. First one delivered in the Pacific NW after
a long delay and a big price increase. I still doubled my money when I sold
it. My friend ALC has a '73 914 2-liter that was recently appraised at 25
grand. It has the original tires (dangerous) and gets out perhaps once per

Actually, me too, but "right" and "left" are perspective

So I've change my thinking to nautical terms. In the US, the

My servo has a rod attached to it. This rod connects to the
latch assembly. It removes easily.

I have know idea if the replacement servo has a rod or not -
never seen one.

Re: [MBZ] HELP! LOW/NO OIL PRESSURE

2009-05-18 Thread Archer
On some of the old cars we would hold the engine revs up and loosen the
sender (actually the pressure tube on the old cars) until oil started coming
out around the threads and was obviously under high pressure. This was done
when the gauge was reading very low. WARNING! If you back it out too far
expect to get an oil bath and a big mess. Don't ask me how I know. Sounds
like a bad sender or gauge to me.

Good luck,

since there is already a known problem with the instrumentation,
wouldn't it be prudent to address that before assuming that the
instrumentation is indicating a problem, and/or verify by other means
that the oil pressure reported is indeed actually out of range?

a question for the veterans; isn't there a ground behind the
instrument panel that's known to occasionally be a problem with these
things? IIRC, isn't its failure mode pretty-much exactly like the
wonkiness with the temp and fuel gauges that's being reported here?

cheers!

In re: Ferrari 914, I didn't invent that term but I agree with it. Yes,
it's a "low end' model and not too pretty although not as ugly as the Mondial.

As to the 914, I am quite familiar with it having bought a 914-6 new and
drove it for 13 years to the day. First one delivered in the Pacific NW after
a long delay and a big price increase. I still doubled my money when I sold
it. My friend ALC has a '73 914 2-liter that was recently appraised at 25
grand. It has the original tires (dangerous) and gets out perhaps once per
year.

2009-05-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Check for flow (a bad sender usually indicates erratic pressure then
quits altogether, it won't slowly fade away), but if you think the
oil is thin, smell it.

If it smells of diesel fuel, your IP is leaking into the crankcase
and you will damage the engine soon.

A new sender is something like $30, worth a try.

Re: [MBZ] Brake booster/master 107

2009-05-18 Thread Peter Frederick
Check for worn out rotors on the front -- you are describing what my
W108 drove like when I frist got it, when the rears were flaky and
the fronts had stuck pistons.

Typical old car abuse, save some $ on brakes by not replacing thin
rotors "just this time" and then running the pistons out to the anti-
rattle spring and getting them cocked. No brakes up front unless you
STAND on the pedal.

No fade on the pedal, with engine running or not.

I pulled the vac hose at the booster. Vacuum present.

It does not act like a bad master to me, but either the fronts are
not braking, or the booster is a goner. Neither is a pleasant
thought () but the booster is worst. (almost $800)

While I was working on other things, I couldn't think of a sure way
to diagnose. Driving back home, I thought I should unhook the
vacuum hose at the booster and plug it, then drive and see if there
is any change.

Any good way to diagnose if the problem is in the booster or master?

Re: [MBZ] the joy of the german shepherd

2009-05-18 Thread Rich Thomas
A couple of months ago a cardinal flew into a window on the back porch
and knocked itself out or killed itself or something. Anyway, the poodle
pups were out there and one umped it and had it swallowed whole before I
could go get it away. I'm not sure how he managed that, and I was
concerned it would plug him up, but he has survived.

Re: [MBZ] the joy of the german shepherd

2009-05-18 Thread tyler
So if a dog breed has "german" in the breed name, can it be considered
an on-topic subject for this list?

I adopted a 5 year old black German Pinscher (rare breed almost wiped
out in WWII) last Tuesday. These dogs are generally very smart and have
a strong prey drive since they were used to guard German grainerys and
brewerys from rodents.

This morning I took him on a walk before work and he spotted a large
Iguana on the neighbors porch. He began to stalk it, creeping up on it
slowly and silently and bracing himself to jump back in case it's tail
whipped. Once he got close enough he pounced it, only to realize it was
ceramic!

It was entertaining, but makes me question his judgment a bit. A 25lb
Pinscher would stand no chance against a real 20lb green Iguana with a 5
foot long razor sharp tail -which this would have been if it were real.

He's already the best behaved dog I've ever had, but I need to watch him
to keep him from prey he can't handle!

[MBZ] HELP! LOW/NO OIL PRESSURE

2009-05-18 Thread Dan Weeks
'82 300SD 314k daily driver. Runs great. Lately, I'd been noticing oil
pressure seemed a bit low at idle, but my idle's set too low, so I
didn't think much of it. Today, I notice a half-bar at idle. Slipped
it into Neutral, and it came up to a bar. Next short trip, same day,
OP fine until car warmed up, then it went down to barely off the peg
at idle. Turned around to come home, and OP gradually tailed off to
nothing. Stopped the car. Checked oil level, which was fine. Oil
seemed a bit thin, but not watery by any means, and the engine was
hot. Looked like plenty of oil sitting on the cam when I took the OP
filler cap off to check. Started up again, and had between 2 and 3 bar
at 2k rpm. Had just a few blocks to go, so drove it back. Needle was
quite erratic--would go up to the top peg, then fall down to 0. WHen
revved up it would suddenly jump up--most of the time. Sometimes it
wouldn't move at all. Got home, with no other signs of low OP--engine
ran fine, no unusual noises, no blue smoke.

What gives? How can I test the gauge/sensor? Is there any way I can
temporarily wire in an aux OP gauge to check? If so, how. I have a
somewhat jumpy temp gauge and fuel gauge, and the tach is inop most of
the time, so I'm hoping it's just electrical. Is there a pattern/
failure mode for 617 oil pumps? Could something be intermittantly
plugging the pickup tube screen? I'm trying to think of everything I
can here. Car is parked until I figure this one out. Any advice/test
procedures appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Dan

I watched my Son's two Siberian Huskies while he spent a year in Okinawa.

The male used to lay quietly by the small fish pond I have in the back yard
then he'd jump & catch birds in mid-flight as they took off & down them in
one gulp. I figured his catch rate was about 30% - fun to watch.

I don't know anything about the 308GTS, but I love 914s. I don't believe

That's interesting. First I'd heard that the current 300/Charger were
being replaced. Just a styling refresh or a major redesign, I wonder?
If the latter, I wonder how cozy relations with Daimler are these
days and whether in turn the parts borrowed from the W210 (rear
suspension, transmission, etc.) will carry over? Would be a shame if
they replaced the current model with something based on one of the
larger Alfa/Lancia platforms, which are supposed to be pretty nice but
are all FWD as far as I know.

[MBZ] Info on Chrysler Dealership Closings

2009-05-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
Dear Employees,

As an important part of our creation of a new company with Fiat, today we
took a major step toward rightsizing our U.S. dealer network and aligning it
with the realities of a smaller overall market. Our goal is to create a
dealer network that is stronger, more profitable and better able to meet and
exceed the high expectations of today’s car and truck buyers.

To begin this difficult process, Chrysler LLC today filed a motion with the
U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking to reject certain U.S. dealer agreements, and
submitted a list of U.S. dealer agreements to be assigned to the buyer of
its business assets. Subject to court approval, 2,392 Chrysler, Jeep® or
Dodge dealers will continue with the new company in a global alliance with
Fiat once the sale is complete. Also, pending court approval, 789 current
U.S. dealers will see their agreements with Chrysler LLC rejected and will
discontinue selling new Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles effective June 9.

We appreciate the support of all of our dealers over the years and sincerely
regret the need to take the painful action of discontinuing our relationship
with some of them. As you know, the auto industry is going through an
unprecedented falloff in sales in the United States and international
markets. We have adapted by reducing the number of vehicle models we build,
our production capacity and employees. Now we need to make similar
reductions in the size of our dealer body.

The decisions to accept and reject dealers were based on an objective,
data-driven review process that was rigorous and thoughtful, taking a number
of factors into consideration. We plan to maintain "business as usual" with
all of our dealers through this transition, including honoring warranty and
incentive payments. We are committed to working with all dealers to ensure
an ongoing positive relationship with customers. To ease the burden on
dealers whose agreements have not been assumed, Chrysler will work to assist
in the redistribution of new vehicles and parts currently held in their
inventories.

As I wrote Tuesday, we have signed an agreement with GMAC Financial Services
to provide automotive financing products and services to our dealers and
customers going forward. A stronger dealer network, supported by GMAC’s
long-term finance options for dealerships and customers, is critical to our
viability. A smaller dealer network will help increase sales and profits at
individual dealers, enabling them to better compete with our marketplace
competitors instead of battling each other for market share.

Additional information, including the motions filed, is available at
www.chryslerrestructuring.com.

Thank you all for the support you’ve given our dealers through referrals and
by continuing to be informed and optimistic ambassadors for Chrysler, Jeep®
and Dodge products. Our quality has never been better and our fuel economy
performance is improved on 73 percent of our current models. With our ENVI
electric-drive vehicles, all-new versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee,
Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Durango, and access to Fiat platforms
and technology soon to come, our customers — and all of us — can look
forward to even more exciting vehicles from a new and vibrant Chrysler in
the near future.

Bob

Thanks,

Tom Hargrave

[MBZ] Latest from Chrysler

2009-05-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
Dear Employees,

The Chrysler renewal story continues to move forward. We are pleased with
the decision by the minority secured lenders to withdraw their opposition to
Chrysler’s proposed sale to Fiat. We believe this is in the best interests
of all of Chrysler’s stakeholders.

All of our constituents can be confident that our business will continue to
operate while we move through the restructuring process. As in the past, we
have made adjustments to our costs to align with the market, which remains
at extremely low levels.

As Nancy Rae notified all salaried employees earlier today, conditions of
our DIP financing also include a mandatory two-week unpaid leave for our
salaried work force to achieve a cost reduction equivalent to two weeks of
salary. While this two-week leave may need to be implemented, we are
assessing our progress toward the budget savings that were described in our
court filings and hope to achieve sufficient savings to delay any unpaid
leave or to render it unnecessary. As we put increasing demands on many
employees to help launch a new Chrysler, it also may make it difficult to
implement unpaid leave for many employees.

As we go through this transitional period, it’s important that we let
consumers know that we’re building a company that will deliver the kind of
vehicles they’re looking for – cars and trucks with great design, improved
fuel economy, future electric drive options and soon-to-come, world-class
technology from Fiat. So this coming Monday, we will launch a new corporate
advertising campaign on prime-time network television that highlights our
current and future vehicles, and our rebirth as a global automotive company.
The campaign uses the theme line that we introduced in print advertisements
on May 3: “We’re building a new car company. Come see what we’re building
for you.” The advertising tells consumers why they can have trust and
confidence in the future of our company.

More details on these U.S. and international advertising campaigns are
available at HYPERLINK

coop.chrysler.com.HYPERLINK
"http://scoop.chrysler.com/2009/05/08/new-ads-highli…mpany-productsnew-ads-h
ighlights-company-products/"

Despite the difficulties of the past several months, we can look forward to
the future with a renewed sense of optimism. If we stick together and stay
steadfast on the course we’ve set, I am confident we will reach our goal of
creating a sustainable, vibrant and globally competitive company.

Bob

Thanks,

Tom Hargrave

Re: [MBZ] the joy of the german shepherd

Wait until she tries it with a hornet. They are easier to catch than flies.
I had a GSP that chased insects. I think he got three hornets and a yellow
jacket over the years. No joy there, but he'd be chasing flies again in a day or
two. What a doofus.

Re: [MBZ] Nissens radiators not as good as Behr

2009-05-18 Thread Luther
To answer your last question first, yes, you are missing the point by
using a nuke to find a needle in a haystack. See below.

the biggest problem with nissens is not the quality of their product,
Why didn't you stop here? That answered my question (telling me they
are a quality product worthy of my Benz) well enough, no need to bs on
and on and on and on, my friends. Cause it's the song that never

Luther

but
that they are difficult to deal with as a company. they change pricing
often and somewhat capriciously and have very much an "our way or the
highway" attitude. while nissens has been steadily raising prices, behr has
been keeping their prices in line and even dropping some of them. as a
consequence, nissens has been losing market share among my customers to behr
and to alternative aftermarket companies such as valeo.

it's a high happiness product though. i don't think anyone has had any
complaints about them at all until kleb. then again, i have customers write
to me every day about how they get their parts in one or two business days,
while it somehow takes kleb six weeks to get them.

but again, if you want a behr, then get a behr. i'm very much a creature of
habit so i tend to gravitate towards the same brands: behr, bilstein,
stribel, eberspacher, lemforder, sachs, phoenix, beru, graf, akebono, et
al. i'm very comfortable with the european, north american or japanese made
products of these companies (although some of the stuff from china has been
dissapointing despite claims that they are "identical" to the products
formerly made in germany". i have no bad feelings about, say, a hepu or a
geuine water pump, but will always use a graf. i don't dislike bosch plug
wires, but i will always choose a beru or, to save money, karlyns made with
beru or bremi components. i will always prefer ate slotted rotors for my
front brakes, but i think plane jane zimmerman or balo discs are pretty good
too (in fact, italian made ate or brembo seem to be slightly less
troublesome than the german brands, although i'm avoiding brembo entirely
now as nearly all of their aftermarket rotor production is now chinese). i
will always choose akebono pads for the front, but can happily recomment
textar/pagid to anyone. (and i will use chinese crap for the most part on
the rears, but can see why someone else wouldn't). i will generally prefer
brand new ate brake calipers over rebuilts, but i can see why someone would
want to spend $60 on rebuilts instead of $200 on new ones.

so if you don't like nissens, buy a behr. i'll generally buy a behr myself,
but still am confident that nissens is a very high quality product. i only
use mobil1 and brad penn oil, but if you want to use havoline or valvoline,
i'm not going to say you are a bad person using a bad product.

i use a ceramic "steel" to keep the edge on my knives, but you can use a
steel one and get even better results than i do.

is there something here i'm missing about what kleb and luther are trying to
say?
