Re: [MBZ] Electric drain/fuses

2009-06-26 Thread WILTON
It was DEFINITELY the radio amplifier in the trunk, NOT the cell phone. I
was talking 'bout the cell phone box, 'cause I thought when I got into the
trunk that that box was the radio amp; quickly realized it (the box) was the
phone; 'didn't find the radio amp 'til I was locking up for the day.
Culprit was radio amp.

'Went out this morning and plugged stuff back in; now to hope everything is
working OK. BTW, found no drain at battery; antenna and radio amp in trunk
remain unplugged.

OK, so it was definitely the radio amplifier, or definitely
the cell phone box that was the culprit? Your announcement

[MBZ] 126 Power steering pump

2009-06-26 Thread WILTON
OK, on to another project. I've been nursing the power steering pump on my 91
350SDL for years. It would get a bit noisy; I'd top it up with very small
amount of fluid, and it would be quiet for many months. Several months ago, it
was slightly noisy, and I topped it up, but it continues to be constantly
slightly noisy (not loud at all, but I hear it). 'Time to finally do
something about it. New or rebuilt one from Rusty, I'm thinking? Some are
probably going to say, Rebuild it, yourself. In earlier times, I would have,
but now, I'll just write check. Are the good shops that rebuild them? I'm
thinking, I'll just write a check (credit card) to Rusty. Working up list for
Rusty, now; shall I include power steering pump?

That is not true, perhaps increased wear but no melted pistons. I know
many people who, either on accident (myself with a rotted hose) or on
purpose (crazy people) who have run with out wastegate hose. Even with
the overboost protection removed it was not until I got to the end of a
400mile drive through the mountains that I found mine loose. It's
certainly not a good idea for all kinds of reason but there is no need
to worry about your pistons melting.

I'm 99.9% sure 'a drum' would fit in the back of a S123 laying down lengthwise.
Not so sure that two would fit back there at the same time. Reasonably sure it

[MBZ] What is a track arm?

2009-06-26 Thread Rich Thomas
Also called Track Rod/Guide Rod -- it attaches to the firewall behind
the front wheel, has a ball and socket joint that can wear out (you can
buy just that part or the arm bushings and socket both), attaches to the
back of the LCA with some sort of joint (bushings etc), which can also
wear out. Keeps the wheel from moving fore/aft. If that is what they
are talking about. The parts aren't much and the replacement isn't very
hard either. You could do it yourself pretty easily.

Track Rod Mount (big ball joints on firewall) $55
Guide Rod Mount Kit (bushings etc.) $14

you have to get it for, like $8/issue at BN. But it's great.

[MBZ] W123 Seat Compatibility

2009-06-26 Thread Smith, Todd
My wife and son are thinking about replacing the tan MB-Tex seats in our
project 1985 300CD and I wanted to find out what seats will fit. I am
assuming that the rear seat is special to the coupe? Will any 300D
front seats work?

I believe that I have read here about list members using pool noodles
and whatnot to repair the seat bottoms. My wife is somewhat skeptical
about the durability of these repairs and is curious to see how long
these repairs have lasted before needing redone or replaced.

Thanks as always

Indeed, if you want access to the back seat.
It might be possible to put the soft parts from another 123 seat on the coupe

Re: [MBZ] W123 Seat Compatibility

2009-06-26 Thread R A Bennell
If the spring base is intact, the effort to repad the seat is not all that bad.
I used a piece of scrap carpet
first on top of the spring base tied on with nylong pull ties. Then added the
fibrefill type padding on top of that
and slipped the cover back on. A major improvement at very little expense and
minimal effort. I did not put the
pool noodle into the spring base as I did not think the seat needed to be
firmer. I think now that the seat has
been used for a bit that I should pull the cover again and add a bit more fo
the padding but it is not bad as it
is. Now I have issues with the seat back as the horsehair pad is deteriorating.
Don't know if anyone has come up
with a do it yourself repair for the backs or if the general concensus is that
one just orders new horsehair pads
for the seat backs.

unscrew out the adjustment on the arm. When you put it back together,

Re: [MBZ] WOW! This is unique

2009-06-26 Thread R A Bennell
My mother in law had a Pacer when it was new and 2 Gremlins previous to that.
Pretty basic cars but they were not
too bad. The Gremlins were olive green and caramel colored and the Pacer was
caramel as well. I do remember the
one Gremlin squeaking terribly. They had to drive down a gravel road to and
from the highway and I think the dust
got into something in the front suspension. I recall them trying to spray WD40
or something similar in on the
spring etc but it did not help much. About enough to drive you crazy.

One reason the Pacer was so ugly was its weird proportions, which I think
were actually well-intentioned---the designers tried to make a small car
that still seemed roomy inside by making it very wide for its length.
(Wider than a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, according to Wikipedia!) Quite
different from the prevailing style in which subcompacts are tall and
narrow. I think the short, wide design is arguably better suited to
American roads, while a narrow car works better on European and Japanese
roads.

But there's no way to make a short, wide car attractive. I was at an orphan
car meet this past weekend that featured a few AMCs, including a Gremlin and
a Maverick, but no Pacers. I wanted to take a picture from directly behind,
from which angle, because of the bulging side glass and inboard C-pillars,
the Pacer looks like a fat guy wearing suspenders.

I wonder if anyone else has tried using biodiesel as a penetrating oil. I
have had exceptional luck freeing up rusted/seized stuff by soaking in it.
I have a couple of adjustable reamers that I used a long time ago to ream

in B99 they worked like new.

*FWIW - captured from another list, I make no claim for it's authenticity:*

Don't forget the April 2007 Machinist's Workshop magazine comparison test.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the
control being the torque required to remove the nut from a scientifically
rusted environment.

Penetrating oil . Average load
None .. 516 pounds

WD-40 238 pounds

PB Blaster .. 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ... 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix...53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a home brew mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone.

Note the home brew was better than any commercial product in this one
particular test.

Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with
equally good results.

Note also that Liquid Wrench is about as good as Kroil for about 20% of
the price.

National Transportation Safety Board

NTSB INVESTIGATING TWO RECENT INCIDENTS INVOLVING
POSSIBLE A-330 SPEED AND ALTITUDE INDICATION ANOMALIES

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating
two recent incidents in which airspeed and altitude
indications in the cockpits of Airbus A-330 aircraft may
have malfunctioned.
The first incident occurred May 21, 2009, when TAM Airlines
flight 8091 (Brazilian registration PT-MVB) flying from
Miami, Florida to Sao Paulo, Brazil, experienced a loss of
primary speed and altitude information while in cruise
flight.  Initial reports indicate that the flight crew noted
an abrupt drop in indicated outside air temperature,
followed by the loss of the Air Data Reference System and
disconnections of the autopilot and autothrust, along with
the loss of speed and altitude information.  The flight crew
used backup instruments and primary data was restored in
about 5 minutes.  The flight landed at Sao Paulo with no
further incident and there were no injuries and damage.
The Safety Board has become aware of another possibly
similar incident that occurred on June 23 on a Northwest
Airlines A-330 (registration unknown) flying between Hong
Kong and Tokyo.  The aircraft landed safely in Tokyo; no
injuries or damage was reported.  Data recorder information,
Aircraft Condition Monitoring System messages, crew
statements and weather information are being collected by
NTSB investigators.
Further information on both incidents will be released when
it becomes available.

If the spring base is intact, the effort to repad the seat is not all
that bad. I used a piece of scrap carpet first on top of the spring base
tied on with nylong pull ties. Then added the fibrefill type padding on
top of that and slipped the cover back on. A major improvement at very
little expense and minimal effort. I did not put the pool noodle into
the spring base as I did not think the seat needed to be firmer. I think
now that the seat has been used for a bit that I should pull the cover
again and add a bit more fo the padding but it is not bad as it is. Now
I have issues with the seat back as the horsehair pad is deteriorating.
Don't know if anyone has come up with a do it yourself repair for the
backs or if the general concensus is that one just orders new horsehair
pads for the seat backs.

Re: [MBZ] W123/126 steerinb box rebuild?

2009-06-26 Thread Barry Stark
Rolf -
I think it depends on why you want to rebuild the steering gear. If it is
just leaking then you can replace most of the soft parts with pretty good
results, but if you have excessive play, then it might be pretty tough to do
a proper rebuild and get the clearances correct without having all the
special tools to hold the various assemblies while you are establishing the
necessary running torques. Take a look at the section in the manual (46-220)
about rebuilding the steering gearbox and I think that you will see what I
mean. Most folks just go down to the bone yard and buy a good used box for
about $100. If you go to a do it yourself yard you may get one even
cheaper and then you can test the play as well before pulling the box.

Hints? I have seen the DIY floating around. Doesn't look horribly
difficult if you are careful. I have 2 in the cars that need to be
rebuild and 1 123 and 1 126 that I planned on selling afterwards. For
the price they charge for rebuilts they should bring a decent penny for
a junkyard find and a $20 kit.

[MBZ] Anybody need new toys

2009-06-26 Thread Redghost

http://www.murphyauctions.net/jackcarrolls.html

Ford dealer is going on the block. One dozen two post lifts and lots
of toys that will go for pennies. I am going to see what the rolling
tool chests fetch and bring one home.

The only problem is that they are in Seattle, Washington, and not Los

2009-06-26 Thread Jim Cathey

Most folks just go down to the bone yard and buy a good used box for
about $100. If you go to a do it yourself yard you may get one even
cheaper and then you can test the play as well before pulling the box.

Mine was $22 at the U-Pull. (But they took another $13 for the

All seats are special to the coupe. I've had fairly good

I just meant streaming video that would work without a lot of pauses. Both
the PC laptop with 1.5 gigs and the desktop with 2.4 gigs do streaming video
well with very few interruptions. Don't really have to have streaming
video on this machine since this first cheap Apple computer is just to see
if I can learn how to operate an Apple and get used to it. If it works out
I'll go ahead and buy a later model Apple with an Intel chip that will
handle PC stuff too.

Found the connections on the net which look pretty much like PC connections,
but not sure if the computers require an Apple keyboard, mouse, monitor,
etc. When I repaired some back in the early '90s for some docs, I remember
that they did have to have their own mice, parts, etc. I'll wait for Penoff
as you suggest just to be sure. The guy who sells them might also have used
kbs, mice, and monitors if they're required.

Ever since CPUs were measured in Ghz instead of Mhz, glitches in video streaming
are usually from throughput on the source when watched from the internet.

My 400 Mhz Cyrex CPU and slow motherboard integrated video had some minor
problems with watching video, the 2.66Ghz Intel Celeron (crippled Pentium 4)
that replaced it could simultaneously record and play (timeshift a TV show) at
up to DVD Long Play resolution, but if I recorded at full standard DVD rates I
had to disable timeshift. (I like to start watching a one hour TV show 10-20
minutes after it begins, and skip commercials as I watch. That way I finish
watching about time the broadcast is finished.)

my new 2.5Ghz AMD dual core can do any play/record functions I might want, but
encoding and burning a DVD in Vista DVD Maker takes a couple of hours.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Which Apple should I buy?

2009-06-26 Thread Allan Streib
The iBooks should work with an external mouse and keyboard, if they are
USB. If they are older ones with the little round connectors then no.

An external monitor will need a little pigtail to connect the monitor's
cable to the mini-DV port on the iBook. Apple store sells them, be sure
you get the one for your model.

I have a G4 PowerBook 1Ghz and 768M RAM it does streaming video,
e.g. YouTube just fine with our cable internet service; can't speak to
how it would work on DSL i'd guess it might have a little more chance of
being choppy but that really just means you're trying to suck more through
of the pipe than it can deliver.

People forget that the i-Everything was post-ADB, post-SCSI,
and after firewire came along. If the CPU's faster than about
300 MHz, in other words.

Our 400 MHz pismo has a little trouble with youtube, but will
play a DVD just fine, much bigger and with a faster frame rate.
So it's a bit on the edge. Anything faster will probably be
just fine.

Gerry,

I'm going to wade into this discussion and take the Devil's Advocate
position. In the spirit of full disclosure, I do own Apple stock, and
generally prefer Mac OS X over all other operating systems. That being said:

The G4 iBook was a very nice machine, and these two examples will allow you
to run Leopard, the last PowerPC version of the Mac OS. If you are going to
buy one of these machines just to learn the OS, then one of these would be
my recommendation.

This machine will not officially run Leopard. You will have to learn how to
force Leopard onto this system, and as such may become frustrated.

With that being said, personally, I wouldn't offer any of these machines to
a first time Apple buyer for several reasons without knowing specifically
what you want to use a Mac to do. So I will make some assumptions and
attempt to talk you forward based on that.

First, the PowerPC (PPC) architecture is well and truly dead. Snow Leopard,
Mac OS X 10.6, is Intel only and has absolutely no PPC code left in the
system. Most games already are using a series of code that allows Windows
games to be quickly ported to the *Intel* version of the Mac OS by using
some of the WINE code to compile into the code to make the Windows API
specific parts of the game think they are running on a Windows machine. This
means that there is already software that simply will not run on any version
of the PPC Mac OS, and that will only get worse as new software is written
specifically for Snow Leopard.

Second, out of all of the choices offered above the best ones are the G4
iBooks. These iBooks were introduced in 2004, and as such are already 5
years old technologically. The video processing (which is important for the
video you mention) is only 32 MB in an ATI 9200 Radeon chip on the high end.
Can you perform video functions with this chipset? Yes. Will it be fluid?
Depends on what you are watching. YouTube regular video? Probably ok.
YouTube HD video? Really pushing it. Hulu, CBS, ABC, etc? Depends on bit
rate and resolution. Basically, bandwidth is important to get the data to
you, however, it's still up to the video processor to decode and display
that information.

Third, while I am confident you will love the Mac OS if given an open and
honest chance. There is always that learning curve for new ideology.
Meaning, if you have Windows so ingrained that you just can't get your mind
to wrap around how the Mac OS does things, you'll always feel like it's
mocking you. Making you angry. With a PPC Mac, you are stuck with the Mac
OS, or PPC Linux/BSD. Reference the First point and you increase the
probability that this machine will sit unused.

Fourth, while $235 will not buy you even a Core Solo (Intel) Mac Mini, when
you can find them $399 will. In fact Power Max (
http://www.powermax.com/parts/show/c-u66060) has one in stock right now. 1.5
Ghz Core Solo, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB hard drive and 64 MB Video RAM with the
Intel GMA950 integrated graphics system. Also not a powerhouse video card,
but better at video decoding than the ATI. $599 will get you a Core Duo iMac
with integrated 17 LCD monitor. $595 will also get you a 1st Generation
Core Duo MacBook as well, if a laptop is truly important to you.

What does your $164 (for the Core Solo Mini) in difference get you? Peace of
Mind Insurance. The Intel Macs can run Windows. In fact several PC magazines
say the best Windows PC to buy is a Mac. So if the Third point comes to pass
that you just have to have Windows, you can remove the Mac OS and install
Windows and chalk it up as a bad exercise. It also buys you the chance to
use Snow Leopard (though in the case of the Core Solo, not at full strength.
Snow really loves multiple core/multiple processors) which will be out in
Sept, and will keep your Mac current for the next generation, thereby also
allowing you to have less
