Re: [MBZ] Apollo pics

2009-07-21 Thread Hendrik & Fay
I think they use pictures taken by the lunar orbiter in the mid 60's, so
it may not have any of the stuff left behind by the Apollo missions,
which according to some did not actually occur, or should I say they
went into Earth orbit for a few days and then came down again. Probably
just as easy to go to the moon, jump around and come home, than try and
keep a big secret, involving thousands of people. Like the say, the hard
thing about space travel is lift off and re-entry, the stuff in between
is relatively easy.

There were two incidents with high pressure ammonia transmission lines
(pipelines) when I was living in Tampa.

There was a line about 1/4 mile south of my house. It was buried, but
they had manholes where they could access control valves and
monitoring equipment. Some meth head who thought they could tap one
of the valves and get some ammonia for his lab got hosed in one of the
vaults. He lived, but probably wished he hadn't. He was severely
burned and had major lung damage. Add to this his incarceration that
was for a number of years for several charges and his life was pretty
much in the tank.

The second incident involved an idiot who rappelled off the side of a
bridge over the Alafia River, where another ammonia transmission line
was suspended under the bridge. He was successful in breaching the
line with a battery powered drill, amazingly enough. The resulting
plume of ammonia that blew out of the hole he drilled knocked him into
the river, where he was picked up by the local gendarmes. The amount
of ammonia that was released into the air caused a massive evacuation
of the area.

Another couple of good reasons why I am glad I don't live in Florida
any more

2009-07-21 Thread John Freer
In CA, DMV says you can sell as many cars as you want as long as you
aren't making a profit which would then require a license. That's an
easy qualifier for me.

There were two incidents with high pressure ammonia transmission lines
(pipelines) when I was living in Tampa.

There was a line about 1/4 mile south of my house. It was buried, but they
had manholes where they could access control valves and monitoring
equipment. Some meth head who thought they could tap one of the valves and
get some ammonia for his lab got hosed in one of the vaults. He lived, but
probably wished he hadn't. He was severely burned and had major lung
damage. Add to this his incarceration that was for a number of years for
several charges and his life was pretty much in the tank.

The second incident involved an idiot who rappelled off the side of a bridge
over the Alafia River, where another ammonia transmission line was suspended
under the bridge. He was successful in breaching the line with a battery
powered drill, amazingly enough. The resulting plume of ammonia that blew
out of the hole he drilled knocked him into the river, where he was picked
up by the local gendarmes. The amount of ammonia that was released into the
air caused a massive evacuation of the area.

This is correct, and in fact, if one were industrious enough they could wire
the adapter in line via the cable itself and not need a PS/2 to USB dongle,
though the cable might come out looking a little chewed up.

If I could get ahold of a true Model M (or two) I would hook it up. I used
to have the ThinkPad M13, that was all black and had a mouse stick in the
center. They came with the original ThinkPad docking stations. Just as well
built as the M, and absolutely no need for a mouse. Unfortunately mine was
destroyed in a move (even an M can succumb to several hundred pounds dropped
on top of it in the bottom of a box) and they are rare the last one I
found was close to $200.

A company called Unicomp has bought the old M molds and offers "new" M's
that aren't quite the same quality as the originals, but I've heard are
pretty close. But that's probably like saying a Chinese built Mercedes
(built under control with Mercedes tool and die) is the same as a German
built Mercedes. There M13's are $99.

*sighs* I miss that keyboard hey, on a related note. Clay, oh Master of
College Auctions, you haven't seen any M13's around Seattle have you?

If you have ever fought with more than 2 car seats in a car at a

[MBZ] 85 380SE for sale $600 Atlanta

2009-07-21 Thread eric peterson

I recently moved and finally got my previous house rented.  but the downside is
I lost my 3 car garage where I had the 380se waiting for the time $$ to get it
back running. New house only has a 2 car garage and parking outside is not an
option.  Soo it's gotta go as the tennant needs the space.

The good.  Body interior and almost all ancillary systems in excellent
condition.  Approx 118,000 miles.

The bad. timing chain jumped and so needs repair for timing chain and
probably bent valves etc etc.  Two small things that would also need fixed that
I just never got around to 1) AC monovalve needs fixed 2) idle sensor thing
needs looked at ( would occasionally idle fast and other times was ok.

This really is too good to go to the crusher.  Anyone know how much would need
to be changed if I decided to turn it into a 300SD??  I'm assuming you'd need
the engine, fuel/KLIMA stuff, transmission, not sure what how much a pain it
would be to add the glow plug wiring/relay stuff and not sure if you'd have to
change the ignition switch

pictures available on request.

Needs to be gone in the next week maybe two at the latest.

Good to hear somebody else has good taste in keyboards! I love these
things and have 3 of them- and use them with USB adapters on my newer
macs also.

I can type almost twice as fast, and without ever any wrist pain with
these keyboards. I program professionally and I couldn't physically type
all day long on these cheap newer membrane keyboards that feel like I'm
typing on raisins floating in a bowl of oatmeal. Plus they never wear
out, and have enough weight stay put on the desk.

Extended aka Saratoga. I take it that it works fine with the Mini
through a PS/2-to-USB adaptor? But how do the Control and Alt keys
map to Control, Option, and Command on the Mac?

Reminder: Our Patron Saint Marshall decreed that nothing goes into the
crankcase accept the recommended viscosity oil {Mobile1 being the preferred
distillate}

When I was young and foolish, I'd use cam lube on the camshaft & lifters during
assembly, use STP as an Assembly lube, leave the coil wire off untill I'd
confirmed oil pressure.

Hello Loren

Make me an deal on chain and tensioner. I have a new piston, spring, and wire
clip for the tensioner up top on the side of the head, but might not be able to
find them. I understand there might be any of several curved rail tensioners
inside the timing case - at least one has a replaceable plastic shoe - but I
won't know which I have until I open the beast up.

I use Castrol 20W-50 most of the time with a quart of Rislone (to make my son
happy; he says the General recommends it) and 1/3 bottle of GM Assembly Lube to
make sure there's plenty of whatever a rubbing tappet needs.

I have a box (lifetime supply) of filters bought on the cheap on ebay - Hengst,
Mann, Knecht. The cartridges are indeed small.

Horrible confession: I sometimes don't change oil as often as I should. Once I
let it go 10,000 miles, and whatever makes 20W-50 act like 50 must have worn
out. My oil pressure dropped a lot and I was really worried. Fresh oil change
restored oil pressure then. I promise to be good in the future.

Thanks for your interest

Re: [MBZ] Engine 102 oil filter draining down (Yes indeed it does).

2009-07-21 Thread Robert Bigham
Hello Wilton

It drains down. My filter housing is on the driver's side of the block. It
has a lid on top held on with a long bolt, remove bolt, take off cap, lift old
cartridge out to the top. All done from above. Drain is in the bottom and
seems to go directly into oil gallery and back through the pump into the sump.
I sent you a way to see an image of the parts on a MB factory EPC earlier.

Thanks for your interest.

If no one else comes up with a remedy other than new fuel tank, let me know and
I'll copy some information on getting rid of bacteria or whatever (black goo)
in diesel and snail mail it to you. It's supposed to be possible and even not
too idfficult - you just have to do it right.

My wife's 1980 300CD has been getting black goo in the fuel system.
Recently, we had to replace the in line fuel filter twice on a 120 mile
trip.

What to do?

I just called our local diesel repair shop. The helpful mechanic said
that there was no way to clean the tank and that we would have to have a
replacement fuel tank installed. LOL, I think not.

How do y'all deal with algae or bad diesel crapping up your filters? Any
helpful advice?

By not replacing much of anything?

The last head job I had done cost me $120. That's to disassemble, clean, mill
two aluminum heads flat, cut 12 three angle valve seats and 12 valves, trim 12
valve stems to regain the original pushrod geometry, and reassemble. Would have
been a bargain if I'd noticed they got a valve keeper in wrong before I put the
head back on the engine. That was a PITA to fix, would have taken me two minutes
if I'd inspected the head carefully before I put it back on the engine.

You need to have it towed back to front, i.e., with the FRONT wheels rolling
along and the rear wheels sitting on the dolly. I can't say if you ruined
the transmission, but there is a chance that you did. But don't despair:
there are plenty of wagons out there with good drive trains, if you can do

Here's one of those 5000 made for sale. It only has 27K miles!

[MBZ] 300TD - rear suspension

2009-07-21 Thread Michael Esh
The 85 300TD Wagon is home and we are ready to begin the transfer of
engine and such from the the 82. Is there a site that has information
on the rear suspension of the wagons that would help us trouble shoot?

Had trouble with front wheels wobbling and throwing the pickup around
at about 45 MPH so we took it off the dolly and tried to drive it for
a ways. The seller had told us the engine was in bad shape but what
the heck. We drove it off the dolly and within minutes there was loud
bang and the engine died. We ended up towing in on the dolly with
rear wheels on the ground for about 150 miles. Did we ruin
transmission as well?

Thanks to Rick Noble for the words of encouragement on the way back to
Michigan as well as the palomino seats he donated. All parts will be
put to use.

Thanks,
Mike

I was stumbling through the parking lot of an invisible 7-11, and saw
Elvis and Di pumping gas into his pink Eldo convertible. Then I saw a
naked cowgirl floating across the ceiling. My head's in Mississippi.

Wrong. There was a big rear wheel drive Olds version of this same car. But,
they stopped making them in 92 then the Buick and Chevy continued until 96.

I'd forgotten that you can't really liquify CO2 with condenser temps above 80 F
