Isn't it possible to have more than one clicker for a door? IF so,
how do you go about doing this?

They vary, our Wayne Daltons will accept up to four different
remotes. Three were used, we have three doors and three
three-button remotes. The lifts are programmed individually,
and it's pretty easy to lose earlier trainings if you're
not careful.

You have to open the opener's receiver and push the programming button,
then key the remote you want to program.

Your instruction manual should have the procedure listed. Note: If you
hold the programming button down, it erases all of the remotes that have
been programmed into it. Good for when you lose a remote; not so good when
you are trying to add one.

SHoeGoo or silicone form-a-gasket of any color should work. Clean up
the boot surface good with petroleum based cleaner, about the same

[MBZ] OT: garage door opener wireless

2009-08-29 Thread Loren Faeth

I have a question for the wireless gurus: (Yeah, dumb questions)

I am new to the world of garage door openers. Have two doors with
openers. One door had a remote "clicker." The other door was set up
for it, but didn't come with a "Clicker."

I went to the store, bought a 2 door clicker, managed to program it,
but now the old clicker doesn't work. I guessed the clicker was
matched to the code the door opener transmitted. Evidence seems that
the door opener changes to match the clicker code.

Isn't it possible to have more than one clicker for a door? IF so,
how do you go about doing this? One opener is a lift-master
(Chamberlain) and the other is another brand (I forgot what brand) Thanks!

Don't even think about try to 're-boot' the axles. Special tools required, and
between the cost of the kit and the labor for paying someone else with the
special tools to do it, you're money ahead to buy good used ones or even new
ones from Rusty.

If they aren't leaking yet, you may be able to research a good rubber
preservative and treat them to prevent the cracks from getting worse. MOPAR

including rubber seals, so try that avenue. I think they use naptha, but I'm

I also noticed today that the rubber boots on the rear axle are looking
dry and have surface cracking. I don't think any of the cracks are all
the way through yet, I don't see any grease coming through.

I've replaced CV boots on a front wheel drive car, is there anything
significantly different about doing them on W123 rear axles?

The MB boots are a different animal as I have been told. I can recall
doing the boots on a Type 2 transporter - an easy job. However, the
MB can is a different animal requiring some can crimper tool that is
special. There was a guy that did the can crimp carefully with vise
grips but I have not seen the website in years. I used to think it
was Richard Hattaway's site, or in his neighborhood, but I don't know.
Purchase a rebuild axle from Rusty or the local CarQuest /

they will warn you with noises much before they go to failure mode and
harm your travel.

doesn't, ask them to. But then we usually save MORE than 10% by
buying from Rusty. Since I have no workable dealer within 100 miles,
I just buy from Rusty. Much less hassle, other than the wait. I
have enough cars, that if one is down waiting for parts, it is an
inconvenience, but not a big problem.

I don't think it would kill any of you to invent a screen name and

missing something here?).

Regardless, attached are three of the pics.

[MBZ] cv boots

I also noticed today that the rubber boots on the rear axle are looking
dry and have surface cracking. I don't think any of the cracks are all
the way through yet, I don't see any grease coming through.

I've replaced CV boots on a front wheel drive car, is there anything
significantly different about doing them on W123 rear axles?

[MBZ] OT: MBCA Membership cost

2009-08-29 Thread Max Dillon
Dwight,

Catching up on digest so this may already have been answered, but a one year
membership is $45, two and three year memberships are discounted slightly. On
some stuff my dealer gives me about the same prices as Rusty, on some their
price is not as nice. The advantage is that I can walk into the dealer and
pick up some stuff 'in stock' vice waiting three or four days for a Rusty
shipment, plus no shipping cost but I do pay taxes.

The folks that this really pays off for are those who get all their work done
at the dealer; they get a very nice discount on the parts (but not the labor)
and the membership quickly pays for itself. Fellow at work bought a membership
at my suggestion, and when his wife's next service was done he saved about 4x
the cost of the membership. I doubt he'll ever go to an event as he's a
private pilot and a ham radio junky and has numerous grand kids to spoil, but
he'll probably be a member as long as his wife owns the car.

Re: [MBZ] grrr. siezed caliper

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
Depends on why it's stuck. If the piston is cocked in the bore, you
can usually persuade it to come out, then you need a rebuild kit.

Otherwise, yeah, they are all pretty much the same.

Change the rotor -- I suspect the piston is stuck because the rotor
is too thin and the backing plate on the pad will contact the anti-
rattle spring on the top. This forces the piston to cock in the
bore, drag, and roast the rubber parts.

I have spare doors, windscreen, lights (front and back) euro lights,

more. I could fill Gump with parts and still need a van to haul the

Should I consider a 94 w140 vergasser? A solid w126 with a rebuilt

Except suspension is easy. Bang out old, install new, get aligned.

Hardest part about suspension work is getting ball joints out. If that's
a problem, unbolt the thing with the ball joint and pay a shop $20 or so to
swap the joint. You have to align it anyway.

Re: [MBZ] Latest Project - NOT MB

2009-08-29 Thread LWB250
Actually, these games post date that type of insulation. The wires have what I
understand to be a cloth covered woven insulation, which, while not ideal,
holds up fairly well over time as long as it doesn't get wet.

The worst thing that happens to these machines is lack of use. My Gottlieb
single player machine is a perfect example of that...

While it did have some minor electrical and mechanical issues when I got it, I
fixed the mission critical items and left the rest alone. Then I encouraged
everyone to play it as often as possible. Within a week the majority of the
functions were working as intended.

This is a perfect example of what I used to refer to as "basement machines" -
the family pinball machine that was abandoned in the basement and left to sit
unused. When someone finally did turn it on and try to play it, things were
all wonky. I would get a call about repairing it, and pretty much tossed up my
hands or offered to take it off their hands.

Most of these that I can recall would "come back to life" after some aggressive
playing for several days or a week.

The document state "multiviscosity oils are not recommended".  It
does NOT mention synthetic oils by name or type, which is why I would
like to see the data (tables) not included.  It does state that any
oil meeting the listed SE/CD rating is adequate for use.  This would
presumably include CH-4 and CI rated oils..  One oil change (of
normal durration, not the 100,000 50 gal over the road truck engine
application) should tell you if you are getting adequate engine
protection and acceptable oil consumption.

I would not disagree that many multi-viscosity oils are inferior in
high heat applications to single viscosity oils, but that is purely a
matter of formulation, and modern multi-viscosity oils are much
better than they were a few years ago.  I would assume that is true
for single weight oils, but I don't know -- the market for single
weight oils is quite small.

It also clearly states that any oil not on the list should be tested
regularly for wear and degradation and may be good (or not),
including any oils single viscosity oils NOT ON THE LIST.

There is a huge difference between adding a viscosity extender to a
single weight dino oil and the extended viscosity characteristics of
synthetic base oil.

MB does not recommend any 10-W40 oil, including Mobil 1, but does
recommend the use of  15W50 and 5W40 Mobil 1, last time I looked, for
the OM603.

Ohmygod...

The first time I read Dan's post I saw "Fran Liebowitz". Then when I saw
Andrew's reply I got thinking "He should have written Fawn Liebowitz". Then I
read the orignal post again...

"Do you mind if we dance with your dates?"

When I was in college there was a girl that was a "house groupie" for the
townhouse I lived in. I actually can't remember her name as we only ever called
her Fawn. In retrospect it seems odd to have had a groupie but Fawn was an odd
girl... Nobody ever let her into the apartment but she was always there.
Sometimes you'd wake up in the morning and there she was, snuggled up but as
far as I know nobody ever had sex with her, I certainly didn't.

My great uncles still farmed when I was little, there was this one French
Canadian guy that drove a potato truck for them and had terrible trouble with
oil consumption on his pickup. One time Uncle Pat asked "do you ever check the
oil in that truck?" "Yessir" the man replied "I keeps it filled right to de
top!"

The guy was going through GALLONS of oil trying to keep it full... One of those
stories I wouldn't believe if I hadn't been there and seen the look on the

Turns out the oil man had only changed the oil once in 50,000 miles
or so -- and that was the factory 200 mile service.  He just added
non-detergent oil to keep it full and drove it..

How about $200 a month for 9 months? Its usually the lump sum they complain
about...
How much would she be spending on a new ride in payments? People tend to never
think of that.

I'm such a New Englander. Our conversation would end with "its my dammed car
and I'll spend on it what I please." which works well considering I'm the
primary breadwinner in our house.

Which reminds me I need to go finish installing the trim around the new stereo
in Dory. Don't tell my wife but the old one hadn't actually failed, the plug
had come off the blasted fader thing in the console (again!). I was fooled
because the PO had direct wired the left front speaker leading me to believe
the entire right channel was dead.
I direct wired the other front speaker in process of figuring it out which
gives me 4 discrete channels. This unit supports USB playback so 4 channels
might be fun to play with.

If that won't fly, how about an alternative? Pick

'Apprentice' LT to him for however long seems right to

wash cars, fetch coffee, pick up dry cleaning (by bus!)
etc., whatever unskilled labor the Indy can use that
can be worked out. Maybe even offer LT the choice of

This only works if 'or else' is real, else LT will
just L his T-ly way along. But if it works, perhaps
it provides a little extra motivation to do well in

This poor thing lived in a basement for who knows how many years with no glass
and lots of crap stacked on top of it. I got it from the guy for next to
nothing, but I've also got a *lot* of work ahead of me...like stripping the
playfield of the "home repair" that some idiot did with varnish or some sort of
clear finish.

What I didn't realize was that they had done the same to the outside of the
cabinet... I thought the orangish tinge was the typical "spent lots of hours in
a smoky bar" patina. If you look at the lower front right side of the cabinet
you can see where I worked on this to see if it would come off - and the
original color of the cabinet.

Want to know what takes this off? Magic Eraser soaked with alcohol. And a lot
of elbow grease.

She has been on the get rid of a car warpath for a few years. Her
car is not bad at all. The rolling crap I drive makes her nuts. When

not even attempt to drive Gump. Left with a 17 year old previa that
smells of kid vomit. I just haul construction stuff or car parts in
it. Occasional field trip, but I have not been invited in few years
for that duty.

Oldest boy, (lazy turd) finally got his license and is now able to
drive. My theory was he would drive Gump. Pansy can not manual
shift. Slow enough to keep him legal and built like a tank. Simple
parts to keep fixed and education on car care that will serve him in
future. Insurance is nothing.

Myself, not bold enough to tackle the work. Every time I tackle a big
job, I seem to hit a snag that results in needing to tow Gump to the
shop to unbugger the mess I made. Witness the transmission, water
pump, glow plugs, engine and trans mounts. After my ham handed work,
she no longer allows me to do work that disables the car.

Perhaps, and NO! But I'm biased. Gump is a perfectly
classy and odd little ride. Have you considered doing
this stuff yourself? I was scared of that sort of thing
initially, but the parts are cheap enough that I tackled
several ball joints now, which has made me bold.

Or keep asking around. Painting cars is not cheap, for example,
but the $300 I had put into Ethelred has had an _amazing_ effect.
Finding the $300 guy was the hard part. (See:

So why change? If you _like_ the car, keep it going.
You've put a lot of work into it, you will get near
zero ROI on all that, versus the continued enjoyment
of driving it.

Should I consider a 94 w140 vergasser? A solid w126 with a rebuilt

I looked on their webpage. Though there are not too many pictures readily

I had $92,000 in student loans once I finished law school
and took the bar exam. Most of that was for Law
school, but about $30,000 of it was from undergrad.
AND this is with fairly significant scholarships in law
school. The cost of education (especially any kind of
graduate school) is getting out of control.

Back in 2000, I was accepted to the University of Michigan
Law School (one of the best in the country). After
scholarships, the cost of Tuition was going to exceed
$15,000 per year (regular rate back then was $30K per year).
In grad school a student can only borrow $18,500 per
year. So, I would have to borrow that much just to
cover tuition and have nothing to live on.

Needless to say, I didn't go to Michigan for law school. My
student loan payment is about $750 a month (and that is
consolidated at 1.9% interest on the extended plan). I
have friends who went to medical school who have $200,000 in
student loans. Even the new public service
program for forgiveness of student loan debts requires years
and years of payments. I don't have an answer, but I
know it's a problem.

Re: [MBZ] Older

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick

MB does not recommend any 10-W40 oil, including Mobil 1, but does
recommend the use of 15W50 and 5W40 Mobil 1, last time I looked, for
the OM603.

Re: [MBZ] sludge

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
Amsoil is NOT non-detergent dino oil, it's basically jet engine oil
re-packaged. Supposed to have the same base as older formulations of
Mobil 1. The "inventor" was a jet engine maintenance guy in the USAF
and recognized the great superiority of synthetic oils and a
marketing opportunity. In fact, to illuminate the difference, I
believe the crash of the "flying wing" in the late 50's turned out to
be substitution of regular engine oil for the then exotic synthetic
oil required for the engines. Carboned up the bearings in the
engines, causing one to explode suddenly and down she came.

You can use ANY oil for extended service IF you change filters
regularly (3000 to 5000 miles, depending on what you find in them
when you change them) AND do oil analysis to determine wear and
degradation of the oil so you can replace the oil when critical
characteristics are inadequate. Needless to say, synthetics have a
much more uniform and stable base oil, so they last longer under
extended service IF the particulates and acid collection are not a
problem. For diesel use, soot accumulation is usually the worst
problem, and even the 61x series of MB diesels do not always benefit
from the use of synthetic oils for this reason. If you have to
change the oil at 4000 miles due to soot accumulation, you gain no
benefit from using synthetic except easier cold weather starts. On
the 60x engines, soot accumulation is much less of a problem.

Amsoil is as good (or better) than Mobil 1, it's just too expensive
for regular use. If it's still around, I've not seen ads for a very
long time now.

Besides Gump is a classic which cannot be replaced with a later model.

is that they run quite hot in comparison to liquid cooled engines, and
the single weight oil is less subject to viscosity loss at that neat

*Most modern gas engines are designed for 5-30, heavier oil will

Non detergent oil means less foaming, also a concern with a splash

However, I use 15W50 M1 in my lawn mowers -- they use less oil since
the viscosity at operating temp is somewhat higher than straight 30
weight so long as the viscosity package and the base oil hold up (and
with Mobil 1 this is not a problem).

Dino oils with viscosity extenders will probably go thin at high temp,
and given the applications, I would expect trouble due to thin oil/low
oil pressure and excessive consumption.

Synthetics are a different animal, but I would still follow
manufacturers CURRENT recommendations, not those from 1955

Perhaps, and NO! But I'm biased. Gump is a perfectly
classy and odd little ride. Have you considered doing
this stuff yourself? I was scared of that sort of thing
initially, but the parts are cheap enough that I tackled
several ball joints now, which has made me bold.

Or keep asking around. Painting cars is not cheap, for example,
but the $300 I had put into Ethelred has had an _amazing_ effect.
Finding the $300 guy was the hard part. (See:
http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/SL2/SL2ntp3.jpg)

I have spare doors, windscreen, lights (front and back) euro lights,

So why change? If you _like_ the car, keep it going.
You've put a lot of work into it, you will get near
zero ROI on all that, versus the continued enjoyment
of driving it.

Re: [MBZ] Older

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
I read the document about oil for Detroit 2-strokes. Sounds like
Mobil 1 would be fine (although not recommended) IF you do oil
analysis checking for wear. Certainly, M1 15W50 is going to have
better film strength and higher viscosity at running temp than 30
weight oil, anyway, and has vastly better detergent power to keep the
crud out of the ring grooves, etc.

The main drawback is going to be soot accumulation, as per usual, and
the only cure for that is more frequent changes. If the change
frequency, as determined by TBN and soot accumulation, gets to less
than twice that for dino oil, there is no advantage to using synthetic.

The only problem with using detergent oil in an engine with pressure
feed lubrication (as opposed to splash lube) is that any accumulated
varnish and sludge is going to be suspended, driven through the oil
pump, and will clog the filter(s), leaving you with unfiltered, dirty
oil in the bearings. If the engine has been recently or newly
rebuilt, there is absolutely no advantage to using non-detergent oil
-- the crud belongs in the disposable filter and into the trash, not
the bottom of the oil pan and other "dead" spots in the engine.

If you have an old engine with serious accumulations of sludge, I'd
advise cleaning it up first before changing to detergent oil, for the
above reasons. Non-detergent oil will work fine until you tear it
apart for some reason, but after that, there is absolutely NO reason
to use non-detergent oils in any engine with an oil filter.

My favorite non-detergent oil story is supplied by my barber. He got
an early 70's Ford pickup from an old farmer for a pretty good price
because it "smoked a little". He got it home and tried to change the
oil, since he knew the old man was a cheapskate and used the cheapest
oil he could lay his hands on. No go -- took the oil plug out, and
nothing came out of the sump. Had to drive a large screwdriver about
4" in to break up the hard sludge enough to get the oil to drain, so
he dropped the pan and removed the oil filter. Filter weighed about
3 lbs -- when they cut it open, it was packed with solid sludge. The
oil pan was filled with sludge with just a small clear area around
the oil pickup, and they ended up just rebuilding the engine rather
than trying to clear it out -- heads were full of crud too.

Turns out the oil man had only changed the oil once in 50,000 miles
or so -- and that was the factory 200 mile service. He just added
non-detergent oil to keep it full and drove it..

[MBZ] Get rid of Gump?

2009-08-29 Thread Redghost
SWMBA is of the opinion that spending $1700 +tax to rebuild Gump's
front end is a waste and a newer vehicle should be procured.

This bedevils me. I am befuddled. What would I replace her with?
What to do with Gump and all her spare parts? What would she be worth
with all her parts and a wonky front end?

I have spare doors, windscreen, lights (front and back) euro lights,
new brake set (rotor and pads) chrome trim, relays, and more. Much
more. I could fill Gump with parts and still need a van to haul the
rest.

Should I consider a 94 w140 vergasser? A solid w126 with a rebuilt
engine to install? One of the ubiquitous late 90's C series?

SWMBA is thinking I dump Gump, end up in the 95 E300D and she gets
some rolling piece of shite. Not really a turd, but one of the

[MBZ] Dodging a bullet (again).

2009-08-29 Thread Peter Frederick
It's been a couple of interesting days here again -- called my parts
supplier (retired MB mechanic) to get parts, this time bolt kits for
the rear links on the 300D and a few other bits. So he says, "what
about your brother's engine?" I say "what about it, which engine?".

Seems he got a visit from Sam (my brother) about his SDL having now
oil pressure.

Wife cracked the oil pan on a railroad crossing, all the oil drained
out all over the road (slowly, I presume), and the car started
shifting very badly. Tranny rebuilt a couple months ago, should be
prefect, but Sam went up to his mother in law's and drove it to see
what was going on, looked at the dash (as pre usual) and saw zero oil
pressure.

He had visions of a dead 603 from oil starvation, and a couple weeks
hard work getting the engine out of my smashed 300D and
transmorgrified into the SDL application, including a new head.

Hans' advice was to JB weld the oil pan and fill it with cheap oil
and see how it ran before getting all torqued up, so Sam did that
last night.

Today, it runs perfectly -- no noise, excellent oil pressure, turbo
spins up, etc. Still shifts weird, so I told him to replace all the
rubber bits in the vacuum control system and check the tranny fluid
in case it has a tranny leak (unlikely, no puddle of tranny juice).

Second time we've dodged a rebuild on that car -- first time Sam got
the seal for the chain tensioner crimped after a chain replacement,
that was a mess, 8 qts of dirty oil sprayed all over the engine
compartment! No damage though, since his wife stopped before the oil
pressure went to zero.

Just goes to show that synthetic oil, even as foam with next to no
pressure, does it's job so long as you don't get crazy.

I presume that's "grape seed" oil. Does the rosemary extract
prevent the vegetable oils from going rancid?

Yes, and one hopes so. (Also the bitter grapefruit seed extract.)

Re: [MBZ] More Re; colleges

2009-08-29 Thread Bill R
If we are suggesting good small colleges, I'd suggest checking out Lynchburg
College in Lynchburg VA. Very good facilities, very good faculty [at least
when I was there]. Because it is in the frozen Northland [which they would
hotly dispute] they have indoor as well as outdoor sports facilities. The
control panel for the first nuclear powered ship was designed on campus:
good science school. My ex-roomie got good prep to become a veterinarian,
and no complaints about my liberal arts education there either. I was about
as ready for grad school as I could be. Pretty highly rated school; very
good campus social life.

Interesting, a friend has a farmall cub I think that he bought a year ago and
uses modern oil. Every time he/we (I help him when I visit) it is all cloudy.
That detergent oil must be breaking everything up.

I've been using 10w30 in my '52 Farmall Super M for almost 10 years now. It
runs just as good now as it did 10 years ago. I was VERY careful when I started
using detergent oil to only use a little detergent oil at first and change the
oil more often so that as the crud broke up from the oil pan it wouldn't cause
problems, and it didn't. This is a pretty common practice in the old tractor
community and although my Uncle Reg said I was going to "destroy that tractor"
he's been dead 6 years now and the tractor continues on...

I have no real data supporting my position. Marshall, please chime in
hear and tell Curt NOT TO USE A MULTIGRADE OIL IN A 2 CYCLE DETROIT.

That being said, if you use any oil that does not meet the manufactures
spec, you own it when it blows up. Why would you risk that?

F-250 has 2 big batteries and very good glow plug system {When the
solenoid works}.
