I would be wary of using aggressive cleaners on things like interior trim and plastics. May well eat into them and damage them. I use a citrus based carpet cleaner for interior trim, leaves a nice and fruity smell. Then again it is a BMW, so you just tip acid on the whole thing and be done with it. Hendrik Donald Snook wrote: By the way, I discovered that the Mr. Clean Magic eraser works great at removing tough greasy/dirty marks/stains on the door panels or other hard plastic. HOWEVER, do not use it on leather. My door panels have leather inserts, and when I was cleaning the door panel, I caught the edge of the leather panel with the eraser and it took the color out of the leather with one pass. Its just a tiny spot less than a quarter of an inch on the edge of the insert, but beware the magic eraser on leather. I probably need to use the clay to go over the paint sometime later. The paint looks great, but it does have some small spots where you can feel a little rough spot here and there. I think the clay is supposed to work great. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare
Maybe I've been lucky - but I've never had any problems with rebuilds - neither the ones I rebuilt or the ones bought rebuilt. I'm surprised so many have had problems (maybe not so many?). Anyway, a friend worked at a company that rebuilt starters, alternators and such - he said they could machine the rotating parts in a way that they'd fail after the warranty had run out. Don't know if that's true or urban legend but I can see machining something that would have a certain lifespan. LarryT OilAnalysis Time? you said every lane on the Interstate is a passing lane. If they were not, the speed (or lack of same) of left lane traffic would block everyone Actually, that's what I was trying to avoid - when people get in the left lane (assume 2 lanes in each direction for this case) and drive at the same speed as a car in the right lane - and they *do* block traffic and long lines sometimes form. It also makes people impatient and start to do dumb things like passing on the right or even on the edge of the road. In this case it appears to be legal to pass on the right. State laws vary on the legality of passing on the right - here's a listing of state laws : http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html It appears to be legal to pass on the right on interstates - or perhaps the state laws take precedent - which appears to be the case. Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare
what i'm saying is that it compromises our ability to fully commit to quality. a place like autohausaz shows up selling bosch at roughly their cost, which, as a bosch distributor, is lower than any mom and pop can buy it for. they have access to millions of dollars in financing, so they can spread the word on their great prices. everyone sees they are telling the truth as that alternator that seems to sell for about $140 is there for $110. This is all true and nothing can be done by mom pop about it. But then comes the sleight for hand that transforms the deal. AZ can't stay in business, obviously, selling everything at cost, but they still always have to support the notion that they are selling cheap. So rather than sell a quality part that wholesales for $55 and sells for $75, which makes them look ordinary, they simply sub a cheap chinese part they buy for $10 and sell it for $40. The consumer, now confident that AZ is cheaper can see that they are selling the same part people want $75 to for $40. In reality, AZ is only cheaper on bosch (basically because bosch lets them violate their TOS, if you will, by selling wholesale to the retail public) and has no advantage at all when comparing like with like. their solution is to convince you to compare like with unlike and conclude that AZ is cheaper mom pop are now put in the position where the customer now thinks that part X should cost him $40, which is below the wholesale cost of $55 for the quality part. at this point, what can mom pop do other than to find some kind of chinese part that costs less than $40 to sell for that $40 price? where this ends though is walmart. mom pop rapidly disappear as their customers all flock to cheaper AZ for woeful chinese parts sold by people who were working at burger king last week. AZ can now raise the prices on their chinese junk to $65, which is almost as much as the customer could have gotten a quality part for when mom pop were still around. At the end of the day, we all end up losers, except for an elite few large companies and we look back wondering what happened to the good old days. Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare
I have expressed my opinion about the wallyworld plague before, and how it literally destroyed the economy and culture of the small town I lived in in Wisconsin. Suffice to say that I patently refuse to buy anything from WalMart and will continue to do so. I know my actions have little effect, but it's the only way I can express my opinion and have an effect, albeit a small one. FWIW, we sometimes have the same thing happen selling generator parts. Some things are easily sourced from others, and when people do so, they often end up coming back to buy the good part from us. In a lot of cases it's dealers who sell stuff on eBay and online for next to nothing. How they do it, I don't know, but they can't be making enough money to be profitable, I believe. [MBZ] assist with diagnosis on no start
I bought a 82 300sd with the idea of a transplant engine for my G-wagen. My G has the 2.8 (110) engine and I wanted to dieselize it. Am I totally nuts (changing from 110 in line 6 petro to 617 diesel 5 cylinder)? Also, would the transmission on the G-wagen fit the 617 diesel? The car (300sd) is hard to start. My thought is it is the glow plugs? The glow plug light comes on and goes off (like it is supposed to do) but will not start without just a puff of starter fluid. After the engine has warmed up it starts without hesitation. It seems to run well after starting, tho I don't think the turbo is kicking in when it is supposed to do so (vacuum issue?). Anyway, I got this car for the engine (rust bucket) as it seemed to run pretty well, but is too slooow or non start (without assist). Can someone give an idea on what I need to do to get it to start like it is supposed to do? I do not like the idea of starter fluid ignition/starting ( I know is bad). Note, it has 130k on speedo (that is nonfunctional). I believe engine/car to have about 200k on it. Why? the seats are intact, pedal wear has about that (200k miles total guess on my part). That is how I arrived at about 200k. Long note, sorry for length, my knowledge is limited and hoping for some sage advice. Sadly it only takes on lunatic to ruin the peace and quiet. We are very lucky, we have had good neighbors next door for many, many years. I guess that house attracts reasonable, stable people (plain colonial with lots of knotty pine panelling). Not a pretentious house. The current folks are the best neighbors one could as for. The new house in the 'burg next door doesn't draw such nice people, being and upscale sort of place, but everyone that has lived there has been perfectly pleasant, if somewhat obsessed with lawn care. The first two got into financial trouble and had to move, luckily actually selling the house so they didn't go bankrupt, but you know what I mean. One horse's backside can make the whole place a strain Somebody needs to tell this woman about nuisance reporting -- it's at least a misdemeanor and if she keeps it up, not only could she do jail time and get a record, someday she's going to convince everyone she's just making things up and then something real will come up, and no one will respond. Re: [MBZ] assist with diagnosis on no start
Ether isn't good. Ether in a glow plug engine is very bad. In order to start, you need fuel, compression, and heat. Let's start with heat. The simplest thing to do is to glow for 30 seconds instead of cranking as soon as the light goes out. You can unplug the glow plug harness from the glow plug relay, and jumper the pins in the connector on the plug harness to test the plugs individually. You can do this crudely with an ohmmeter, or better yet, jump an ammeter between the positive battery terminal and a wire to a glow plug. The plug should draw around 20A initially and then taper down to about 10A after a few seconds. If you do that with all five, you'll see which one(s) don't act right. If the plugs are all good, plug the connector back into the relay, turn the key on, and check for voltage at a glow plug. Compression: one thing commonly overlooked is valve adjustment. If your valves are tight, it's not going to want to start when cold. While you've got the valve cover off, slowly turn the engine until the timing marks line up on the front cam tower and read the crank position on the crank damper. If the crank is five degrees ahead of the cam, you need a new cam chain. If the above check out OK, post a follow-up and we'll get into fuel issues, starting with the hand primer pump. I'd also like to see congress take a few years off - I'd even be willing to pay for their vacation - they'd do far less damage like that than when they are creating all kinds of new laws that are un-necessary at best and socialist at worst. We'd never miss them and the country would likely be better off the longer they remain on vacation. Of course, they'd never go for it (the vacation) because the population would see how little they (congress) are needed. To corraborate Mitch's excellent suggestions - all the hard to start issues i've had with 615, 616, and 617 engines have been related to one of the following: air in a fuel line, bad glow plugs, or too tight valves (other than too cold with the wrong oil). If the crank is five degrees ahead of the cam, you need a new cam chain. If the above check out OK, post a follow-up and we'll get into fuel issues, starting with the hand primer pump. [MBZ] 240D sticky throttle
So those of you who weren't at the ChowdaQ didn't get the report that I brought my 190D instead of the 240D because of the throttle sticking on the 240D. I drove the 240D to work Friday and the throttle was real annoying all the way home. It'd stick at about 2500rpm which made for a nice cruise control but annoying... So today I finally got to look at it. I lubricated all the fittings save one which I couldn't get apart. I bent one bit of frame back that looked like it might have been rubbing. Lubricated all the pivot points too and still the stick. Finally in desparation I pulled the little shock thing, it turns out crud had built up in the dust shield and was making the shock sticky. I cleaned it good and now theres no problem. I took the car for a good half hour drive and it slows like it should again. I also got a look at the oil cooler bypass. My Indy did a real good job with that, he ran the new oil cooler lines I'd bought up to where they belong and then used a piece of hose to jump from one line to the other and clamped it good. I couldn't detect any sign of leakage although the car only has 3 hours runtime on it with the repair. At anyrate if/when I get an oil cooler it'll be easy to install with the lines already in place. -Curt -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare
I actually have several ideas on this front. #1. Congressional layoffs. The money saved is not just in having too many legislators (which we do) but that each legislator has too much staff... #2. No paid congressional travel anywhere other than from their home district to Washington and back. Ever. #3. All legislators will work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week for 1 month at a time. Then they go home for a month. Then another month in DC, then home. Missing votes is not an option without a berevement or medical release. In Washington all legislators will be housed in dormitory style housing. In Washington all legislators will be issued a 10'x6' office. It will have a desk, a computer a phone and 3 chairs. Connected will be one staff office, it will be 10'x10', it will have 2 desks, 2 computers, 2 phones, 6 chairs. There will be no carpet, no windows, no art. Offices are to work in. Re: [MBZ] brake job nightmare
I could go for that - actually the Va legislature works kind of like that - The General Assembly meets annually, beginning on the second Wednesday in January, for 60 days in even-numbered years and for 30 days in odd-numbered years, with an option to extend annual sessions for a maximum of 30 days.. There are usually 1000+ bills to consider but because of the time frame many are tossed out. The gov can call a special session if there are severe budget/economic problems but it doesn't happen often Also, the Gov serves for a single 4 year term, then he's gone. I really like your ideas about the fed legislature - especially the austere offices - just like Walmart actually! But for slightly different reasons - Mr Walton said his managers were supposed to be on the road and not in a fancy office. Limiting their travel to once a year would save gobs of money. Also, they should fly commercial, business class - no exceptions. No limos, they can be driven to the office in a Taurus. Count their lucky stars I'd allow a chauffer - but there's no reason they can all ride together in a few buses from the dorm! The temps in their offices must be on 78 in the summer and 62 in the winter. Work fast and you stay warm! I'd also limit their pay drastically. Can't tie it to minimum wage because they'd increase min wage, but to make it equal to what, ... say an engineer makes fresh out of college - $65 or $70k per year IIRC. I'd also (as long as we're dreaming because that's what this is) I'd say no lawyers! Only people with business degrees, engineering, scientific or economic degree's can be elected. May as well require them to have worked 5 years at some point after high school but running a business would count. Oh yeah, about campaign promises - if they don't make a concerted effort to do what they promise within the 1st 2 sessions then they must leave. Resign and find another job. Also, they take an OATH to observe protect the Constitution. If they introduce things that undermine this country (like leaving our borders open) bring them up on charges. You know? I bet we could pick the top 10 and start to push for this.. Without congress it cannot go anywhere but maybe we could get the American people behind it and require every legislature running must declare they will work within these guidelines and work to change them to the LAW! In the meantime they still adhere to them. It'd be a great vote getter for those running who choose to endorse our ideas IMO. Oh well, enuf dreamin' LarryT OilAnalysis Time? I should add this -- the problem suddenly appeared. We took the car to Omaha (about two hours away) with no issues, had dash lights all the way home. Wife mentioned that she had no dash lights in her car, and #3 fuse is what I found. Well, actually, it started with the right rear tail light being out, and then the wife mentioned the dash lights. [MBZ] OT: 747 Pilot Comments About Carrying the Shuttle
just east of the beach out over the water. Then, once we reached the NASA airspace of the Kennedy Space Center, we cut over to the Banana/Indian Rivers and flew down the middle of them to show the people of Titusville, Port St.Johns and Melbourne just what a 747 with a shuttle on it looked like. We stayed at 1,000 feet and since we were dragging our flaps at Flaps 5, our speed was down to around 190 to 210 knots. We could see traffic stopping in the middle of roads to take a look. We heard later that a Little League Baseball game stop to look and everyone cheered as we became their 7th inning stretch. Oh say can you see... After reaching Vero Beach, we turned north to follow the coast line back up to the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF). There was not one person laying on the beach...they were all standing and waving! What a sight I thought...and figured they were thinking the same thing. All this time I was bugging the engineers, all three of them, to re-compute our fuel and tell me when it was time to land. They kept saying Not yet Triple, keep showing this thing off which was not a bad thing to be doing. However, all this time the thought that the landing, the muscling of this 600,000 pound beast, was getting closer and closer to my reality. I was pumped up! We got back to the SLF and were still 10,000 pounds too heavy to land so I said I was going to do a low approach over the SLF going the opposite direction of landing traffic that day. So at 300 feet, we flew down the runway, rocking our wings like a whale rolling on its side to say hello to the people looking on! One turn out of traffic and back to the runway to land...still 3,000 pounds over gross weight limit. But the engineers agreed that if the landing were smooth, there would be no problem. Oh thanks guys, a little extra pressure is just what I needed! So we landed at 603,000 pounds and very smoothly if I have to say so myself. The landing was so totally controlled and on speed, that it was fun. There were a few surprises that I dealt with, like the 747 falls like a rock with the orbiter on it if you pull the throttles off at the normal point in a landing and secondly, if you thought you could hold the nose off the ground after the mains touch down, think again...IT IS COMING DOWN!!! So I flew it down to the ground and saved what I have seen in videos of a nose slap after landing. Bob's video supports this! :8-) Then I turned on my phone after coming to a full stop only to find 50 bazillion emails and phone messages from all of you who were so super to be watching and cheering us on! What a treat, I can't thank y'all enough. For those who watched, you wondered why we sat there so long. Well, the shuttle had very hazardous chemicals on board and we had to be sniffed to determine if any had leaked or were leaking. They checked for Monomethylhydrazine (N2H4 for Charlie Hudson) and nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4). Even though we were clean, it took way too long for them to tow us in to the mate-demate area. Sorry for those who stuck it out and even waited until we exited the jet. I am sure I will wake up in the middle of the night here soon, screaming and standing straight up dripping wet with sweat from the realization of what had happened. It was a thrill of a lifetime. Again I want to thank everyone for your interest and support. It felt good to bring Atlantis home in one piece after she had worked so hard getting to the Hubble Space Telescope and back. [MBZ] OT: Canadian and U.S. governments
(From another list:) Most Canadians think of themselves living in a democracy like USians, which is wrong (in both cases). In reality Canada, like the US is a democratic republic. The difference being that Canada evolved gradually into a democratic republic and US was designed to be a democratic republic. On the face of it, the US, being carefully engineered by the founders to protect its citizens from tyranny and the abuse of government, should be less tyrranical than Canada which evolved from a once despotic monarchy, but the opposite is actually true. I have lived in the US and in Canada, and have often wondered why this should be so. The conclusion I came to is not very original, but may fit. I think that just like people, governments live up to their expectations. The USian expects government to be abusive and corrupt, and that is what they have. The Canadian expects their government to provide order and stability without corruption, and that is pretty much what they have. That is not to say that there is no corruption or abuse by government and politicians in Canada, but when it occurs there is no tolerance for it. On the other hand, the USian expects their politicians to be corrupt and their many alphabetic agencies to be abusive, they are quick to forgive overly zealous enforcement or politicians caught with their hands in the cookie jarsnip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Are you sure that the borders aren't being closed to keep us in??? I have followed this rationale for years, but am beginning to not like the borders element of borders, language, culture (Michael Savage). Very few of us are indigenous peoples - most of us have loong history of past immigration, some more recent. I am rethinking the borders thing, as it seems a sham strawman that should be dropped. What to do with some of the issues open borders brings - I don't know, but I am growing to reject the closed border thing. It sounds more like a boondoggle that is becoming a federal program that never ends, doesn't do any of what it set out to accomplish, and costs more and more dollars. They smiled and shook their heads as if to call their Captain an amateur...okay, at that point I was. The tires were so hot you could smell them in the cockpit. With the aircraft moving forward through the air, any smell from the tires would not be able to get to the engines to get funneled into the compressor air directed to the cabin ventilation system. Besides, every time a plane lands, there is a LOT of smoke from the tires. Have you ever smelled ANY burning rubber on landing? We were burning fuel at a rate of 40,000 pounds per hour or 130 pounds per mile, or one gallon every length of the fuselage. The websites I consulted say a gallon every length-and-a-half of the fuselage. Airliners and even a flight of two F-16s deviated from their flight plans to catch a glimpse of us along the way. Extreme doubt. We dodged what was in reality very few clouds and storms, They have a lead plane that seeks out the smooth route for the 747/shuttle. I had an idea...let's fly low and slow and show this beast off to all the taxpayers in Florida lucky enough to be outside on that Tuesday afternoon. So at Ormond Beach we let down to 1,000 feet above the ground/water and flew just east of the beach out over the water. Another extreme doubt. Yet another extreme doubt (YAED). In addition, the following two extracts seem to contradict each other: The 747 flies with its nose 5 degrees up in the air to stay level, and when you bank, it feels like the shuttle is trying to say hey, let's roll completely over on our back So at 300 feet, we flew down the runway, rocking our wings like a whale rolling on its side to say hello to the people looking on! With a $6 Billion shuttle?! Re: [MBZ] Parts exchange
Sounds like a plan. However, my supply of new and used parts just got drastically smaller. At 07:10 AM 9/11/2009, you wrote: If you want a easy to access place to list used parts, Yahoo Groups is pretty easy to set up - I can create a group for OkieBenz if needed - the only downside is people need to subscribe to a Group before gaining full access but the groups offer lots of flexibility in what can be posted. A folder for parts available would be super easy - if you see something you want, just email the owner and make a deal. Then the owner removes the sold part from the group folder and that takes care of maintenance. It would also be available for non-okie members to join also so you may end up with a larger audience for selling parts. Let me know if you want me to create a Yahoo Group for a parts sales tool. Someone would need to monitor things to make sure it stays accurate and doesn't get hit with spam - I can monitor who joins the group is you wish - LarryT 91 300D OilAnalysis Time? It is simple (yeah, I know, it is fleabay, but it is simple and it works) If it gets really successful, we could also add an auction format, so that when getting rid of something is more important than price, we could list it and let the fun begin. Re: [MBZ] Linux webserver botnet pushes malware
Uh, Wonko, what was that about no virus on linux. We all know it is invincible because it is open source... RIGHT! WHO IS THIS REALLY? (Noah) At 03:23 PM 9/12/2009, you wrote: Attack of the open source zombies ... A security researcher has discovered a cluster of infected Linux servers that have been corralled into a special ops botnet of sorts and used to distribute malware to unwitting people browsing the web. Each of the infected machines examined so far is a dedicated or virtual dedicated server running a legitimate website, Denis Sinegubko, an independent researcher based in Magnitogorsk, Russia, told The Register. But in addition to running an Apache webserver to dish up benign content, they've also been hacked to run a second webserver known as nginx, which serves malware. What we see here is a long awaited botnet of zombie web servers! A group of interconnected infected web servers with [a] common control center involved in malware distribution, Sinegubko wrote here. To make things more complex, this botnet of web servers is connected with the botnet of infected home computer(s). The finding highlights the continuing evolution of bot herders as they look for new ways to issue commands to the hundreds of thousands of infected zombies under their control. It came the same day anti-virus provider Symantec reported Google Groups was being used as a master control channel for a recently discovered trojan. Four weeks ago, a researcher from Arbor Networks made a similar discovery when he found several Twitter profiles being used to run a botnet.snip http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/09/12/linux_zombies_push_malware/ ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com Loren Faeth ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
