Re: [MBZ] MB 240D Diesel Hydrogen hybrid?

2009-11-23 Thread Jim Cathey
So how does it get the energy to extract hydrogen from the water.
Diesel fuel to operate the engine to turn an alternator to get
electricity to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen? You can't get
something for nothing.

It's either something of a catalyst, or it's worthless.
(If it modified the fuel combustion rate to allow more
energy to be extracted, that is. I know it's not a
catalyst, it's consumed during combustion.)

If you fill it so you see fuel standing in the fill pipe after having
bounced the rear end of the car several times to get the bubbles out,
you will have a very consistent fill. I've done that since 1972.

I think they take some electricity off the alternator and make some
small bit of hydrogen by electrolysis then pump it back into the

eBay doesn't have to improve their business model, or worry about

they do now. I have noticed that among a majority of the

Odometers are required by federal law to be accurate within a very small
percentage (I'm not going to bother looking it up) because of a court decision
decades ago over inaccurate rental car odometers resulting in overcharges.
This goes back to when miles were charged in addition to days.

Assuming a 115 is somewhat like a 123 you need a new throttle linkage ball end.
I had one fail on Hammie on the highway. I had a piece of wire for a temporary

I do so love my idiot child.

While I was out with the flu, he chose to drive himself to school in
Gump.  He was quite unconcerned with a hard start issue that turns out
to have been the cable from the start knob having fallen off.  In his
negligence, he killed the battery and fried the starter by cranking
and cranking until he got it to light off.  For a week or so.  By the
time I was able to roust myself from my sickbed, the damage was done,
but I did not learn the full extent until just this past week.

I put the cable back on last month, and wondered why the starter would
whine so when I would start Gump.  Was it related to the installation
of freshened injectors?  There was a knock now, maybe

Nope, it was the slow, excruciating death of the starter.  The five
year old battery would no longer hold enough charge to glow and start
Gump.  With a fresh battery install, there was plenty of glow, but not
enough spin of the starter.   Wires checked out fine.  So, off to
source a starter.

I think the starter is not meant to really be changed.  It is large,
heavy, and takes a circuitous path to extricate.  Nearly brained
myself with it as it finally came out between the firewall and the
exhaust.  Rather like birthing a baby.  Except, you have to reverse it
all to get a fresh one in.

In the process of extraction, the throttle linkage rod below the
manifold decided to no longer grip the ball with its socket.  Been
popping it back on every few block, but need a more permanent
solution.  Zip ties?  C-clamp?

I put new valve seals on my old SDL at 300K, along with a new chain. I

In my experience, even people whom know how to divide correctly and keep
track of distance and volume generally get the economy wrong by 20% or
more. Odometers are generally not very accurate, and there isn't much
consistency between the full tank shutoff at gas stations.

Both of my cars will often have a huge discrepancy between the odometer
miles/gallons from a particular fill and the more accurate calculation
from a long term average across multiple tanks of fuel, and using a
correction factor for the odometer.

A good illustration of this is on fuelly.com. Here is the page for the
190D (the '87 is mine):

http://www.fuelly.com/car/mercedes-benz/190d

There are 4 190Ds, and you will see that they all seem to vary by about
5mpg between tanks. With my own car, I've tried adjusting this for fuel
quality and the type of driving, and found that it doesn't change the
variation much- it seems like mostly "random error," probably from the
pump shutting off at different levels.

Tyler

You're giving him a lot of credit. Its usually "I drove about 100 miles
(meaning 80) and put in about 5 gallons of fuel (meaning 5.8) so thats
about 45mpg"

Very few people even really know how to calculate mpg, never mind
bothering to use real numbers.

Kaleb,

comet residue.

This has worked well for me on some "field finds" that were very moldy.

So this 87 TD I have sitting around is like a greenhouse. Its been
sitting under a tree in the back for a while, and I knew it leaked a
little water anyway, I think its leaking from the sunroof maybe.
Anyway, I have not even gone out to look at it in a while, and I opened
it up, and it smells BAD, everything inside is coated with that moldy
crap, water condensation on all of the inside glass, even the speedo
will have to be removed and cleaned up. This car is NASTY. I threw a
battery in it and fired it up and moved it out into the open, cracked
the only window that works to see if it will dry/air out a bit.

When I do finally get around to getting this car on the road, anybody
got any ideas on how to get rid of that musty moldy smell and return it
back to smelling like a MB? I have several cars like this but this one
is by far the worse at the moment.

[MBZ] Dead Gump starter

2009-11-23 Thread Redghost

Been
popping it back on every few block, but need a more permanent
solution. Zip ties? C-clamp?

Oh boy that was funny.

BTW, you really dated yourself when you said Dodge Dart.

andrew strasfogel wrote:

I guess I need to tell my fishing story (not Benz related).

Between end of exams and commencement in my senior year at college, my
roommate and I borrowed the other roommate's Dodge Dart for a trip up to
Maine from Boston. We went deep sea fishing on the last day, caught a bunch
of haddock and iced them in a plastic bag. It was wicked hot, as they say,
and the ice melted. My roommate was driving along 95 on the way back, and
he loved to tailgate and then slam on the brakes. Each time he did this,
ice water sloshed onto my feet from the fish bag.

When we got back, we extracted the bag o fish and returned the vehicle to
the owner, who put the car in the lot. The car smelled a little ripe, and I
figured that the fishy water was probably the cause but that this would go
away. A few days later, after commencement, he and his family drove back to
Ohio. They noticed a really bad smell, and got as far as NY State when the
stench just got too much to bear. They pulled over, and Chris searched to
see what was causing the vile odor. He discovered a haddock under the front
passenger seat.

Despite this, we are still friends...

I think you're right- MBs from the factory have well calibrated odometers.
Mostly, they only get off if a different diameter tire is used. Most other

The speedo in my '83 300D definitely reads several MPH above actual
speed.  Several different radar-equipped speed-limit signs in town (the
kind that show your actual speed on a display under the limit sign)
confirm this, I can drive past one with the speedo at 33 - 34 MPH and
the sign will read 29 or 30 MPH.

Re: [MBZ] WOW! 45 mpg 1984 Mer Benz Diesel - $800

2009-11-23 Thread Tyler

Yeah, my wife tends to fudge prices a bit - as in that shirt was $19.99
according to the tag - but according to my wonderful wife it was $19. She
always rounds so it's in her favor. ;-) Of course, she put up with me for

You're giving him a lot of credit. Its usually "I drove about 100 miles
(meaning 80) and put in about 5 gallons of fuel (meaning 5.8) so thats
about 45mpg"

Very few people even really know how to calculate mpg, never mind
bothering to use real numbers.

Given most of their lack of ability with basic English usage when writing
ads for ebay and craigs , I would be suspicious of their math skills as
well. "Let's see, I drove 100 miles and put 5 gallons of diesel in it -
yeah, that sounds about like 45 mpg."

Oh well...

Re: [MBZ] Faulty W123 speedometer in 1983 300TD

Move the needle (for example if your speedometer is 5 mph fast, move the
needle position about 5 mph counterclockwise), push back onto the axle,
then lift back over the stop. Install speedometer in cluster, cluster
in car.

Max, do I move the needle or the stop? Otherwise, the needle will rest
below the stop.

Thx for that - I never did fully grasp the vac system on my 79 240D. It's
been a while since I worked on it and my memory (which often fails me) was
the doors and locks were on separate systems.

Sorry - evidently that was wrong ;-)

If we are talking about a 123 or earlier, any leak in the vacuum system,
be it in the central locking, or ACC or anywhere else can cause it to not
shut down.

IMO the only vac lines that affect shutoff and start up are the 2 lines
between the ign sw and the shutoff valve on the IP.

Also if it's an easy fix why not fix it and not have to list it as a
problem?

I would also worry about a Garret turbo charger being added. Like kit
cars, stuff like this can vary widely in quality of workmanship.

Anyway - have a nice week -

Re: [MBZ] Faulty W123 speedometer in 1983 300TD

2009-11-23 Thread Peter Frederick
I think what he is saying, is determine how much you need to move the
needle to get the correct speed (that is, say, 5 mph).

Remove speedo, lift needle over stop, note where it sits, pull it
off, put it back on so that it reads, say, 5 mph different at rest.
Lift back over the stop, re-install, and see if it's reading correctly.

This will not work if you have a drive gear/differential mis-match, I
don't think, because the difference will be a percentage, not a fixed
off-set. If the speedo is always off by the same amount at all
speeds, this is the fix.

2009-11-23 Thread Rich Thomas
I did this a coupla weeks ago on the TD that has a leaky sunroof, and
here in the hot humid it tends to grow all kinds of flora. I got some
of that orange cleaner and mixed in a bit of bleach then went at stuff
with that mix. It cleans pretty well, smells pretty good, and the
chlorine tends to repel further growth (though I did rinse it well with
a wet cloth). The carpets and stuff will probably need to come out and
be washed.

will have to be removed and cleaned up.

And Tire Rack agrees with you on the 195/70R14 stock tires.
They were right about the 185R14 on my 300SD, so I assume things changed between

Re: [MBZ] CL award winning ad writer of the day...

2009-11-23 Thread LWB250
When I was attending my college of ed. I was amazed at the amount of
psychobabble that gushed from the faculty and grad students.  My department
chair kept pushing me to stay on after my undergrad degree and do some graduate
work.  I never really understood whether she was doing it because she felt I
could make a contribution or she just wanted to keep the flow of grad students
coming into the program (this was a very small department of 12-14 profs and
about twice as many grad students.)  While I admit it would have been
moderately entertaining, I needed to earn a "real" living.

Having been in the business world for some years prior to this, I found it
rather easy to manipulate and/or comply with the expected norms within my
department.  In other words, I figured out how to play the system early on..  I
probably could have done well had I stayed on, but in doing so, would have been
living at or near the poverty level.  With the cutbacks in funding that have
taken place in the last few years I would most likely have been on the street
right now, too.

As one with advanced degrees from a "college of Education" within a university,
I can say the quality of grad students getting advanced degrees in education
was appalling.  Aside from that, the indoctrination of new teachers consisted
of just that, indoctrination in edubabble, (the ability to speak educanese, so
as the parents will be intimidated and not question what is being taught, or
how) indoctrination about all the latest fads that don't work, and nothing
about critical thinking or methods that work.  Mcguffie's reader, even the Dick
and Jane books, and phonics and real math, along with real success and failure
teaches kids to be citizens.  That is something the "progressives" just don't
want.

When several of us caught a department chair plagiarizing grad student work,
the college and university circled the wagons to silence those of us who knew
about it, so as not to bring "embarrassment" to such a prestigious university.
THe plagiarizing department chair was moved to a Michigan university and
installed as a Dean.

All of mine (603) have done that. By the time you need to add oil, the
light stays on. I tried replacing the sender once, and it mad NO
difference. Jim Cathey has it figured out, the circuitboard in the
instrument cluster goes bad, and the time delay fails, so the light
flashes off and on all the time. it is made so that it stays on all the
time when the level is at the add mark.

I have just learned to "tune out" the oil light. Not a good thing, but
otherwise, as Max is finding out, it drives you crazy.

Ozone does a decent job of breaking down things that cause odors. They
sell air cleaners that use a shielded UV lamp with a small fan to
circulate air, or that use an electrical discharge. Nothing beats elbow
grease to wipe down everything and extract the carpet. The ozone gets
into the duct work and other places you can't get to with a rag.
A buddy used them in his cleaning company. Over a few days they got rid
of most of the lingering toasty smell from fire restorations and the
dead body smell from crime scene cleanups. If nothing else, they will
make it smell like ozone for a while. France used to use Ozone for water
purification instead of Chlorine. Not sure if they still do.

The "add" mark is 2 quarts below the full mark.

Yours is behaving exactly like mine -- starts to flash once in a while
at the half-way point or so (one quart low) and is on continuously by
the add mark. I think this is how they are supposed to work, pretty
much.

For the oil consumption, check your blowby by opening the filler cap at
idle. Serious amounts of vapor would indicate a problem, typically
these engines in good shape don't make more than a wisp of vapor at idle
with the breather hose attached to the intake -- the turbo suction pulls
the usual amount out.

At your milage, I'd suspect worn valve guides. My brother is replacing
the block in his SDL (oil starvation from a broken oil pan), and his
valves seem to be somewhat loose (275,000 miles, not all on synthetic
oil). He was getting more oil "smoke" that he wanted, too. New turbo a
couple years ago, so that wasn't the problem.

If you are still using too much oil and don't have much blowby, I'd
suspect you need a new turbo -- they will leak copious amounts of oil
and not make smoke at all until there is so much oil in the exhaust it
won't burn. The key there is too much oil in the intake side -- take
the air pipe off, wipe it out, re-install run with the blowby pipe out
of the pipe (plug the hole, of course, leave the tube open) for a day,
and then take the intake pipe off between the turbo and air filter
housing. If there is significant oil on the turbo compressor wheel, the
seals are shot (and so are the bearings) -- time for a new turbo
cartridge.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Skoolz...

True.  I had an offer from a private school, which catered heavily to the big
money in town.  Tony Dungy's kids went there, all the politicos sent their kids
there, etc.

They had no benefits to speak of, not to mention the faculty worked 9 hour days
with one Saturday a month of in-service time.

Had I been a youngster and wanted to gain some serious experience along with a
nice reference for my resume I would have jumped on it.  At the time in my life
I got the offer it just didn't make a lot of fiscal sense to do it, as opposed
to staying with the public schools, where at least I had benefits and earned a
pension.

Less than five cents to fix. Determine exactly how much it is off at
your favorite cruising speed. Pull the speedometer, lift the end of the
needle over the stop at zero. Once the needle comes to rest, mark
position. Pull needle off, move to new 'correct' position and push it
back on. Put all back in place, road test to confirm, repeat as
necessary. Marshall is, I think, my source of this fix. I've used it
exactly once with great success.

I sensed that my speedometer was "off" so I tested it yesterday. I
drove at 60mph for exactly one mile in cruise control and checked my
watch - a little more than a minute. I tried this for several miles to
verify the error, and sure enough, the speedometer was reading too HIGH.
Even at 66 mph I barely made a mile a minute. The car is a1985 300TD
with its original speedometer, tires are 205 70 14s and the transmission
is form a 1985 300TD. Could either the tire size or replacement
transmission have effected anything?
The rear axle and differential are original AFAIK.

So should I have the speedometer recalibrated or replace it with one
from an
85 W123 turbo diesel?? Or should I just enjoy the illusion of driving
really fast (e.g., 80 when it's more like only 72 mph)?

As one with advanced degrees from a "college of Education" within a
university, I can say the quality of grad students getting advanced
degrees in education was appalling. Aside from that, the indoctrination
of new teachers consisted of just that, indoctrination in edubabble,
(the ability to speak educanese, so as the parents will be intimidated
and not question what is being taught, or how) indoctrination about all
the latest fads that don't work, and nothing about critical thinking or
methods that work. Mcguffie's reader, even the Dick and Jane books, and
phonics and real math, along with real success and failure teaches kids
to be citizens. That is something the "progressives" just don't want.

When several of us caught a department chair plagiarizing grad student
work, the college and university circled the wagons to silence those of
us who knew about it, so as not to bring "embarrassment" to such a
prestigious university. THe plagiarizing department chair was moved to
a Michigan university and installed as a Dean.

Ozone does a decent job of breaking down things that cause odors. They
sell air cleaners that use a shielded UV lamp with a small fan to
circulate air, or that use an electrical discharge. Nothing beats
elbow grease to wipe down everything and extract the carpet. The ozone
gets into the duct work and other places you can't get to with a rag.
A buddy used them in his cleaning company. Over a few days they got
rid of most of the lingering toasty smell from fire restorations and
the dead body smell from crime scene cleanups. If nothing else, they
will make it smell like ozone for a while. France used to use Ozone
for water purification instead of Chlorine. Not sure if they still do.

No, they are still slightly different pads, but either one can be found in
either box. If you recall back to the list beginnings, pagid vs textar was a
hot topic of debate.

I used to use the pbr on the back of my 123s with good results. My personal
preference is for zimmermann rotors or the ate power discs (the current version
of which is called something like "premium one"). Balo has traditionally been
the choice of mb owners as they are most like original. I'll also happily use
any italian brembo or ate but not the chinese versions

Depends on how much you love the car and what kind of driving you do I think.
I did my 240D just over a year and just under 9,000 miles ago with PBR rotors
and the cheapest pads (PBR I think) Rusty had. We're talking about a car I paid
$400 for so I kept everything on the cheap. I drive mostly highway so my brakes
tend to last (90,000 on the 190D and counting) and I can report zero problems
with the brakes over the last year. Lately (last 2-3 months) I've been driving
the 240D much more so I'll start to get a better idea on how they wear.

If it were a car I was going to keep I'd spring the extra money for Akebono,
looks to be ~$30 extra over Pagid for your car. I put Akebono on my Ranger and
can already see a dramatic difference in the amount of brake dust. I haven't
bothered to clean the wheels but I can see where rainwater is washing away the
old dust in streaks and no new dust is developing.

I think Hursty said Texar and Pagid are the same company now and probably the
same pads marketed under different names...

Re: [MBZ] My wagon is like a green house

2009-11-23 Thread andrew strasfogel

My '77 300D is dead-nuts on. I checked it after having been stopped and John

Where are Balo made these days, and do they weigh as much as the originals did?

What about pads, what's the price difference between Pagid and Akebono?

Musty cars don't stand a chance out here

I had one of the kids' dogs have the most horrible runniest, spewiest doggie
squirts in the back seat of my F150 while on the way to the vet. Took it to
get it detailed (imagine that conversation being translated to Spanish and
watching the faces of the hombres that were going to do the cleanup work)
and they did what I thought was a very good job (I tipped them well
considering wha they were doing), until I drove the F150 back to Illinois
for a couple of weeks in the hot, humid, rainy summer. Things became
re-hydrated enough to gag anyone who got into the truck. Wish I would have
known the coffee trick then. I was buying all kinds of stuff trying to get
the smell out. My truck smelled like a dog had crapped on the restroom floor
at the Cracker Barrel.

Did the wagons come with 185/83R14 or 175/83R14?

185/83R14 would theoretically be 30mm larger than you have now, that's over an
inch in diameter change. That would throw you off by about 4-5%, or 3mph at 60.

205/70 and 175/83 would be about 3mm different, or essentially identical.

Re: [MBZ] FW: Puzzler of the day: oil level sender '87 300TD

2009-11-23 Thread Peter Frederick

The "add" mark is 2 quarts below the full mark.

Yours is behaving exactly like mine -- starts to flash once in a
while at the half-way point or so (one quart low) and is on
continuously by the add mark. I think this is how they are supposed
to work, pretty much.

For the oil consumption, check your blowby by opening the filler cap
at idle. Serious amounts of vapor would indicate a problem,
typically these engines in good shape don't make more than a wisp of
vapor at idle with the breather hose attached to the intake -- the
turbo suction pulls the usual amount out.

At your milage, I'd suspect worn valve guides. My brother is
replacing the block in his SDL (oil starvation from a broken oil
pan), and his valves seem to be somewhat loose (275,000 miles, not
all on synthetic oil). He was getting more oil "smoke" that he
wanted, too. New turbo a couple years ago, so that wasn't the problem.

If you are still using too much oil and don't have much blowby, I'd
suspect you need a new turbo -- they will leak copious amounts of oil
and not make smoke at all until there is so much oil in the exhaust
it won't burn. The key there is too much oil in the intake side --
take the air pipe off, wipe it out, re-install run with the blowby
pipe out of the pipe (plug the hole, of course, leave the tube open)
for a day, and then take the intake pipe off between the turbo and
air filter housing. If there is significant oil on the turbo
compressor wheel, the seals are shot (and so are the bearings) --
time for a new turbo cartridge.

[MBZ] Faulty W123 speedometer in 1983 300TD

2009-11-23 Thread andrew strasfogel
I sensed that my speedometer was "off" so I tested it yesterday. I drove at
60mph for exactly one mile in cruise control and checked my watch - a little
more than a minute. I tried this for several miles to verify the error, and
sure enough, the speedometer was reading too HIGH. Even at 66 mph I barely
made a mile a minute. The car is a1985 300TD with its original speedometer,
tires are 205 70 14s and the transmission is form a 1985 300TD. Could
either the tire size or replacement transmission have effected anything?
The rear axle and differential are original AFAIK.

So should I have the speedometer recalibrated or replace it with one from an
85 W123 turbo diesel?? Or should I just enjoy the illusion of driving
really fast (e.g., 80 when it's more like only 72 mph)?

That's how the online GSA Auctions work. They do have a weakness,
however. I suppose you could make the smallest incremental bid
repetitively over several hours which would cause the auction to end
in the wee hours of the morning when no one else was awake or
motivated enough to bid against you.

For online parts auctions, it would be good if the item remained
listed for months instead of days. List a Buy-it-Now and accept
offers. I have at least a hundred items that I would gladly trade for
cash well under what a new one would cost, but which are too obscure
to put on eBay in hopes someone who needs it looks it up in the next
couple days.

Re: [MBZ] My wagon is like a green house

2009-11-23 Thread Curt Raymond
I've had good luck making a sachet of ground coffee too. The coffee absorbs the
bad smells without really releasing any coffee smell. When I first got my 240D
back last summer it was pretty musty as it had sat for quite awhile and the
rear window seal has failed. A couple weeks of coffee helped (driving it has
helped even more).

The coffee grounds will also absorb moisture. To make the sachet I put some
coffee in a coffee filter and tape the outside edge together making a calzone
kind of shape.

You're giving him a lot of credit. Its usually "I drove about 100 miles
(meaning 80) and put in about 5 gallons of fuel (meaning 5.8) so thats about
45mpg"

Very few people even really know how to calculate mpg, never mind bothering to
use real numbers.

Given most of their lack of ability with basic English usage when writing
ads for ebay and craigs , I would be suspicious of their math skills as
well.  "Let's see, I drove 100 miles and put 5 gallons of diesel in it -
yeah, that sounds about like 45 mpg."

Re: [MBZ] Which of you screwed this guy?

2009-11-23 Thread Curt Raymond
I had bidding fever sell a snowmobile carb kit once. I'd paid $20 at a local
shop, then sold the sled without the kit and put the kit on the Bay where it
sold for $35.
Wow...

So I went and bought another kit for $20 which sold for $25 at which point I
realized I'd probably saturated the market and quit.

Best deal I ever had was when we were closing out of a building a work and
throwing away some old video capture cards. I took a crate of them home to see
if they were worth anything. Turned out they were worth $200 a pop... Made my
Christmas money on eBay that year.

At only 100K miles it sounds like it would make a awesome 300D if it has
been reasonably cared for - although it sounds like a bit of maintenance has
been neglected.

It sounds like he bought a car expecting perfection - and paid for
perfection - but he got a typical ebay special.  I wouldn't mind having a
nice 85 300D but would have to get it for less that $1500 - reasonable
considering the work needed.

If the description in eBay was not accurate seems he could get his money
back?    I came *real* close to buying a 91 300D on ebay and checked out the
things needed to get a refund if the deal went sour -  and accuracy of the
listing was important.

I agree with the others - he got all excited in the bidding and won!
Reminds me of some carburetor jets I sold on ebay a month or so ago - they
sold for $110 while I sell them on my website for $50!  A guy in France
bought them but I don't know why he paid so much unless it was bidding
fever.

quickly (blink)?

The RC oscillator capacitor is not the sort that, in itself,
fails. But if the solder joint to it goes bad, and VDO has
a long and rich history of MB solder problems over the long
term, then yes. The light effectively becomes connected
directly to the sender, and comes on a lot when it oughtn't.

Some have suggesting taking the intake to a machine shop for them to
clean in a tank, and I believe the cost is reasonable. I may try that
if I decide to have the '95's intake cleaned. I had to get a used
intake for my '87 from PGA, and it came fairly clean. I decided to try
to finish the job with brake cleaner, brushes and rags, and it took a
LOT longer than I thought it would.

old fashioned "messy-by-hand method" using lots of rags and any kind of

Anyone have a better method? I'm guessing a bead blaster might be

2009-11-23 Thread LWB250
Larry,

I got a degree in education, and before I graduated knew that I didn't want to
do it.  Between the lack of respect from students, administration that won't
back you up, parents who treat you as an adversary rather than a partner, and
accountability standards that are unrealistic, I realized it just wasn't the
sort of environment that I could be successful in and retain my sanity.

Re: [MBZ] FW: Puzzler of the day: oil level sender '87 300TD

2009-11-23 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
When you say a quart low, do you mean that the dipstick is reading at
the "add" mark? My complaint is that mine starts illuminating the
warning light when the level has just started to drop from the mid-point
between the "add" and "max. fill" points, and by the time I wait for the
level to drop to the "add" mark, the light is on continuously.

I've fixed all the oil leaks (resealed the injection pump, new vacuum
pump) and there is no oil spotting from the car now, so either the turbo
seals are letting oil into the intake manifold or the rings are bad or
the valve seals are bad or some combination of those three is going on.

You can try replacing the float assembly, but this is pretty typical
behavior for those things. Mine comes on occasionally when I'm about a
quart low, so does the one in my mother's 300TE at the same point.

The observation that you "burn" more oil completely full is typical
Benz. Do check for an oil leak at the shut-off lever and for oil from
the front seal (and turbo drain 0-rings) -- these three leaks
can be the source of your "consumption", as I know only too well.
I've got to fix all three on mine, hopefully next week in time for a
trip.

My old 300D with 270,000 miles use NO oil between changes when I had all
the leaks fixed.

If the description in eBay was not accurate seems he could get his money
back?I came *real* close to buying a 91 300D on ebay and checked out the
things needed to get a refund if the deal went sour - and accuracy of the
listing was important.

I agree with the others - he got all excited in the bidding and won!
Reminds me of some carburetor jets I sold on ebay a month or so ago - they
sold for $110 while I sell them on my website for $50! A guy in France
bought them but I don't know why he paid so much unless it was bidding
fever.
