variable damping, right?

That was one of the first things I checked to make sure there were no codes for
the suspension and no leaks and/or weird noises from the struts. Mine works
great, no problems.

When these things go bad, they can be replaced with regular struts without all
the electronic dampening/leveling. There are a lot of these old cars that have
had that done. I am sure it doesn't work quite as well without all the
computer assist stuff, but it will still be a nice riding car.

All old cars will need some sort of suspension work. I remember seeing the
receipt from the previous owner of my 90 300SEL. He spent over $10,000 on one
trip to the dealer to rebuild/replace the suspension components.

Kaleb wrote: that Northstar is a total piece of crap isnt it?

That is what I used to think. I always heard don't buy the first generation
Northstar. They were great technology and lots of power. AND in general, that
is probably a safe bet to avoid them because they have head gasket problems and
the midcase gasket leaks oil. HOWEVER, mine has already been fixed.

My Indy bought this car for his son to drive to college. I remember when he
got it in - it was a bought a year ago. It was a one owner car and the previous
was very picky about the car. But, he got hurt pretty bad at one of the local
aviation places and parked for the 3 years while he was rehabbing.

When my Indy got the car, it was totally filthy-covered in muck and mud. The
tires were all flat, and it would barely run. He yanked out the engine (which
is the only way to fix the midcase gasket) and fixed the head gasket including
all new head bolts, fixed the midcase gasket, new plugs, coils, water pump, and
of course all the fluids. He really fixed it up for his son to drive. But,
his son is a car guy too, and found a Audi TT convertible. So, the Cadillac
came back for sale.

The only problem with it is that a CD is stuck in cd player. It doesn't play.
So, if you hit eject, it tries to eject and says err. After that, the radio
comes on and everything works fine except the CD.

I had that. Turned out to be one of the springs that puts

a lot of eject cycle attempts before they'll get with the

Gotta open it up and look! (Only way to get the CD out

[MBZ] NEW EURO HEADLIGHTS - THANKS RUSTY

2010-02-09 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
I took advantage of Rusty's January sale on Bosch Euro lights and bought
a new set for my 124 wagon, and I'm sure glad I did. Finally made some
time to install them last night, and I was very pleased not only with
the performance but with the quality of the 'kit'. Included in the box
were the lights, two new signal/marker lights, new 6-pin connectors (to
fit the receptacles on the new lights), three bulbs per light
(headlight, fog light, running light), and new pins for wiring in that
running light, AND a nice instruction sheet with all the wiring colors
and pin positions. The price for new Bosch lights is steep, but getting
all the little extras to make the installation easy and complete takes
away some of the sting. The bulbs were all made in China (Gary bait -
let's see if he can resist...)

Seriously Rusty, I think you should have advertised all the contents of
the kit. Purchasing the side lights and the light bulbs and the
connectors separately would probably cost about $100, subtract that from
the overall cost of $400, and that makes purchasing a used set on
Fleabay for $200 or more not too attractive.

My car had a mixed set of Euro lights, one Bosch and one Depo. The
up/down adjusters were internally broken on both and the pieces were
missing, the car's front looked unbalanced due to the different lights,
and the Bosch lens has broken tabs and the Depo light has other plastic
broken on it. I'm going to hold on to them for parts for now, maybe try
to fabricate the internal adjustment bits.

Very respectfully,

err. After that, the radio comes on and everything works fine
except the CD.

I had that. Turned out to be one of the springs that puts pressure on
the eject roller had popped off its post. Put it back and it works
fine. (Some of them get sticky and need a lot of eject cycle attempts
before they'll get with the program, but it's a poor bet.)

I had that as well, in a F150 that was still under warranty. Took it
into the dealer, they didn't try to fix it at all just popped in a new
radio/CD unit.

I don't recall if we got the CD back in the end or not.

[MBZ] Connector

What is that round plug connector on the driver side fender on the 126

Me thinks it will be cheaper / faster to repair the auto car and get it
on the road, compared to any transmission swap.  What's the deal with
the other - is that the car that needs a new differential? Didn't you

I know it's not helpful or relevant for Snook's Caddy's problem, but

putting that little belt back where it should have been---it was

Re: [MBZ] Snook's Caddy was Re: One down and one to go

2010-02-09 Thread R A Bennell
How similar would the Northstar Caddy engine be to that in an Olds Aurora? My b
in l is a mechanic and he told a
horror story of a failed oilpan gasket in an Aurora. They had to pull the
engine and tranny and separate the two in
order to change the gasket because the exhaust loops through it somehow such
that you cannot get the pan off
without doing so. I don't recall all of the details but I do recall him saying
they used $3K in labour to change an
inexpensive gasket. While they had it apart they had a look at bearings etc and
he said all else looked good but
they wondered how long the new gasket would last. I think the issue is heat
from the exhaust cooks the gasket.

That is what I used to think. I always heard don't buy the first generation
Northstar. They were great
technology and lots of power. AND in general, that is probably a safe bet to
avoid them because they have head
gasket problems and the midcase gasket leaks oil. HOWEVER, mine has already
been fixed.

My Indy bought this car for his son to drive to college. I remember when he
got it in - it was a bought a year
ago. It was a one owner car and the previous was very picky about the car.
But, he got hurt pretty bad at one of
the local aviation places and parked for the 3 years while he was rehabbing.

When my Indy got the car, it was totally filthy-covered in muck and mud. The
tires were all flat, and it would
barely run. He yanked out the engine (which is the only way to fix the midcase
gasket) and fixed the head gasket
including all new head bolts, fixed the midcase gasket, new plugs, coils, water
pump, and of course all the fluids.
He really fixed it up for his son to drive. But, his son is a car guy too, and
found a Audi TT convertible. So,
the Cadillac came back for sale.

The only problem with it is that a CD is stuck in cd player. It doesn't play.
So, if you hit eject, it tries to
eject and says err. After that, the radio comes on and everything works fine
except the CD.

I back fitted a euro 123 with a tachometer, and my car didn't even have
that port. The sender is merely a magnetic sensor that gets a signal
from a pin in the crankshaft balancer. My car had the pin, and even had
the holes in the inner left fender to mount the tachometer amplifier
port. You would need a tachometer, tach amplifier, and all the wiring
between (assuming you have the port and sensor already in place). I'm
sure your new O-scope can substitute, if the sensor is there. Look for
wires from the port to the engine, could be front of engine or rear at
flywheel.

had a problem as I always kept 100-200 lb of ballast in the trunk to keep
 the axle angle low.

They are eyecatchers, and that grille is arguably one of the most

2010-02-09 Thread LWB250
When I got my company Crown Vic it had a (cheap) aftermarket CD/radio head unit
in it. I had noticed that the car had the 6 CD changer in the trunk, which I
thought was odd since there was an aftermarket head unit.

Hmm.

I removed the CD changer to find that the top was pushed in due, no doubt, to
something in the trunk banging against it with some force. Since it had the
same style changer that the 300Es had, I was familiar with it.

I disassembled it to find that the crushed frame had kept the magazine from
ejecting, which is probably why they abandoned it. I was able to bend things
back to their original position, and get it to function on the bench.

Back in it went, and then I bought a factory take out head unit from a high
end car stereo guy I know in Vegas.

Plug and play after that. I rarely use the changer, as I prefer to listen to
podcasts on my iPod through the stereo, but it's still there and works nicely.

Gotta love those free fixes.

So on this particular car, the theory is that it made terrible noises,
oil spewing from the front, alternator and other lights came on and the
steering got heavy, but he (or she?) really decided the car was dead
when it started to overheat? And all this due to a neglected belt
tensioner which finally tore out of the front engine cover?

I once found a really beat 190D apparently abandoned in a parking lot

same fate?

Of course that covered the front of the engine with nasty diesel oil...
He's going to pull it apart a little and diagnose a little more but its
looking like for a couple hundred bucks I'll have a running '84 190D 2.2l

I hate auto trans but hesitate to have him put the manual trans in it now.

Re: [MBZ] 190D Parts car update

2010-02-09 Thread R A Bennell
It is so easy to jump to conclusions. Most of us have been there and done that
in one manner or another. I know I
am guilty of assuming things that I should be smart enough to check out first.

An Example if you will.

A couple of years back (or somewhere thereabouts) my big air compressor in the
garage started making knocking
noises. I assumed the worst since it is old, old (de Vilbiss (sp?) of 1947
vintage). I had changed the tank due to
concerns about the big ka-boom! that might take me and the garage out, but the
head and motor were still original.
I cleaned up the exterior of the head and painted it when I swapped tanks but I
don't think parts are available so
I did not open the case to have a look.

A year or two later, the thing started to make a bit of a knocking noise - not
terrible but enough to cause me
concern that it was on its last legs.

I bought a new compressor. I thought about replacing the head only but my
nephew got me a good deal on a unit with
the vertical tank so I went for it.
I later bought a new head similar to the one on the new compressor and hauled
it and the old compressor out to the
cottage with the thought that I could use it there and my younger son who is
becoming an auto mechanic might one
day like to have it.

It sat there over the winter and then last summer, I got around to removing the
old head so that I could check the
new head to see if the holes would line up for mounting etc.

I then discovered the source of the knock. The big pulley on the head was a bit
loose. It has a bolt through the
side of the hub that one tightens to squeeze the pulley onto the shaft. The
bolt needs to be a bit tighter.

So, I spent (even though I got a really good deal on the new compressor and the
new head) about $1,100 for
something I did not really need. The old compressor was fine and doing the job.
By the time that I learned of my
mistake, I had had both the compressor and the head for so long that I could
not in good conscience try to return
either. I had destroyed and tossed the crating too. I know I cannot likely sell
either for any sort of profit or
probably even a break even situation so, I now have 2 big compressors and a
spare head that will work on either.
Not really a bad sitation all things considered but I might have chosen another
purpose for that money given the
opportunity. I have to say I am relatively happy that the old head is sitll
usable. I debated about putting the new
head on the one at the lake but think I might as well put the old one back and
let the new one wait.

I have another comment I want to make on that subject too, but this is getting
long so will do that in a separate
post.

Of course that covered the front of the engine with nasty diesel oil...
He's going to pull it apart a little and diagnose a little more but its

[MBZ] One of the problems with being an amateur mechanic etc

2010-02-09 Thread R A Bennell
I mentioned another issue and will post it here.

I don't know about you folks but I tend to buy tools that I find on sale and
think I might ultimately need or want.
I have two items that I bought in that manner that have come back to haunt me.
My problem is that I may buy
something and let it sit for a long while before ever actually using it. Then,
if it causes problems, I may not be
able to return it for a credit or trade.

I bought an air sander - one of those long narrow units that does a back and
forth movement. Not an expensive one
by any stretch but probably good enough for the limited use I might give it. It
sat in the shop for a long while
and was not used as I was not trying to do any autobody work at the time. The
first time I used it, it fell apart.
The base that holds the sand paper detached from the body of the machine. The
base is rather thin aluminum covered
on the bottom with a rubber pad on which one fastens the sand paper. There are
bolts at each end that hold this to
the part on the bottom of the body, that moves back and forth. The aluminum is
a bit soft I guess and the bolt
holes elongated and the bolts pulled through. My initial thought was that I
could repair it but it has sat for a
while waiting for me. A week or more ago, I was looking at it and my son
suggested I just take it back and ask for
a replacement since it is clean and looks unmolested. The store from which it
came has a good reputation for taking
care of folks. I tried it but they declined as they no longer carry the exact
model. The ones they have now are
similar but a different color so they could easily tell it was not current
stock.

My second example relates to a DeWalt jigsaw. I bought it a couple of years ago
when I thought my son had managed
to lose one that I have had for a long time. The old one showed up and as a
result I did not make much use of the
new one. I was not happy with it when I did and assumed maybe I had the wrong
blades for it. It turns out that I
have the right blades and I suspect the saw is defective. Everytime I try to
use it, it bends the blade. I took it
back and explained and asked them to help but they no longer have that model
and thus declined. I cannot take it to
the shop for repair as it would likely cost about what I paid for it to have it
fixed. So, I am faced with tearing
it apart to see if I can determine what is wrong with it. Grrr!

I hope I do not end up with the same issue with the spare compressor head that
sits out at the lake and won't
likely be used for a long while.

You can download all the parts lists, exploded drawings, etc. from the
Dewalt web site (or some link off it, servicenet or something like
that), which helps with taking them apart and putting them back
together. Parts are fairly inexpensive, check to see if there is a
service center nearby, they might have parts in stock.

Re: [MBZ] Connector

2010-02-09 Thread Jim Cathey
What is that round plug connector on the driver side fender on the 126
and I think the 123 too. It has a screw cap on it, and looks like
about 6 holes with a wire bundle going to it, but does not seem to do
anything. Is it a monitor port for something?

It is the diagnostic port. Among other signals the engine tach
signal is there. On the 617 diesels, like the 123 and 126, there
is a tachometer amplifier screwed in there that drives the dash
instrument. (Early 123's didn't have a tach, later ones did.)

The sender is a VR sensor, just a coil of wire around a metal
post that goes near a metal post spinning on the harmonic balancer.

The stock tach sender is a circuit right out of National Semiconductor's
app note for a tachometer.

The connector design is perfectly good, but the execution was
faulty in that the pins are just a little too short. As things
age and oxidize they begin to make poor contact.

Yeah thats the plan. Angie and I will trade it and the 240D back and forth. I
plan to continue to slam the miles on the 240D since although it burns more
fuel its been super cheap to own. If I'm faced with a big repair on it I'll
send it to the junker and drive the 190D full time while looking for a new
toy car.

I bought the 240D with the plan of learning how to work on cars. Now I know how
to do brakes, exhaust, upper control arms, water pump, alternator belt, LED
dash lights, steering wheel removal, ODO fix and improved my welding. Not bad
for the maybe $1600 I've got in it total for price and parts and in the
meantime I've put around 14,000 miles on it.

they grab. I adjusted them out to where I do not think they were
doing anything at all, I have noticed they have now self adjusted
back to what is probably correct, but grab real bad. What causes
this? Is it something in the MC sending too much pressure to the
back or something? Is there some sort of valve in there that is
supposed to control this?

Any specs on the connector, like which hole is what?

It's on the car's schematic, usually found in the ETM.
