meets the
body, both the inside and the outside. If for some reason you can't
get the
inside pieces at the top off (some will just slide right off) then
you can
exchange the whole mast body holder on the top of the antenna motor
box.
It's just held in with one small screw which you remove and then
pull the
tube out of the box after taking the mast out of the tube. Make
sure you get
the screw back into the hole in the mast holder tube when you push
the tube

back into the box.

From your description of the problem I think you may have a problem
with
the clutch on the retraction/extension wheel. Just take the whole
thing out
and take the cover off the motor box and plug the power back in and
you will
see what moves and what doesn't. There is a wheel in there with a
clutch in
the center which connects the motor to the wheel and arms on the
wheel that
click over a counter on a switch system to shut the motor off after
a set
number of rotations of the wheel. If the clutch slips too much the
nut will
turn with the gears and shaft but the wheel will not turn so the
antenna and
the counter on the switch is not moved and the motor keeps running.
Oh, you
will need to get the antenna into the full down position in order
to get the
unit out of the car. If you are good enough at contortions you may
even be
able to do the whole thing in place but for me it was easier to
take it out.

When you get the cover off the motor box you will see the wheel
with a big
nut in the center and a tab bent up to keep the nut from moving.
Bend the
tab down and tighten the nut 2-3 flats, NOT TURNS, and bend the tab
back up.
Connect the electrical plug and test to see if the nut is tight
enough for
the wheel to move right. If not and the antenna still sticks and
doesn't

move without a little help then go through the whole process again to
tighten the nut an extra flat and test again. You don't have to put
the
cover back or the whole thing into place in the car just hold it
and have
someone operate the key. Leave the antenna switch in the full up
position

and the radio on.

Do not tighten the nut more then 1 flat at a time after the first
adjustment or you may get it too tight and burn out the motor if
for some

reason the antenna gets hard to move later.

While you are in there make sure that the pinch wheel at the bottom
left of
the wheel is moving right and maybe give it just a drop of oil at
the pivot

and on the center of the pinch wheel.

Just went through this whole thing a couple of months back after
replacing
the antenna mast on my 83 300TD. Now if I can find a new suspension

Hi Jim -
Yeah, I think that's what it needs - complete removal, detailed cleaning and
check the gearbox for proper operation.

I checked the manual and found 8231.pdf to contain info saying to clean the
mast with cleaning pad (looks like a standard Hirschmann cleaning pad) then
wipe with clean cloth.

I suspect the antenna has gunk (technical term) in the connections so as Jim
and others are probably right that it should come off for cleaning.

I wonder if I should replace the inner tracking thingie when I'm in there?

Always did for me. Try taking your 'clean' antenna mast out and
glugging acetone into it from below, let it soak in then work the
mast in and out by hand. See how much crap oozes out along the

It would be better to have the donor car next to your car. I would
guess that the best way is to remove, as John says, everything
heat/AC related under the dash, including the dash wiring harness,
and the parts under the hood, and the engine compartment wiring
harness. You would have to note the positions of the components and
label all the wiring connections.

It would be a good time to replace the dash pad also, as you would
have the dash stripped nearly enough to replace the pad.

It is probably easier to change the evap in a 124. That is

I hear that the primary reason that the Canadian economy is doing better than
the US economy is that our housing
industry is still strong. We are still building and people are still paying
higher prices for homes. There is a
suggestion that that is a bubble that will ultimately burst.

On the rising prices issue, I also note an ad in the local paper this week for
7/16 aspenite sheathing for almost
$11 per sheet. Last summer I was paying between $7 and $8 and it had been
cheaper in the spring. I think it was

Have not looked elsewhere to see if that is the going rate but suspect it is.

Was in Lowes and Menards on Wednesday but did not think to check the prices

Except on computers and stuff of that nature.

I have a laser printer, copier, fax, scanner machine with 2 paper trays etc
that I bought a number of years back.
It is a Panasonic Workio and I paid through the proverbial nose for it - I
think close to $5K. In any event, it is
considered obsolete and there are apparently no software upgrades for it to
permit me to readily move up to Windows
7. I can go no further than XP I think, although Vista might work. In any
event, the service fellow - it is on an
annual contract for repair, maintenance, and toner - tells me I might want to
just get a new one as the current
model is only about $1K to buy brand new.

I just bought an Acer i7 chip machine with 6 or 8 Gigs of RAM (can't recall and
it is not here ) and a terrabyte of
hard drive etc for just under $1K. I could not buy the parts and put one
together for the cost in the local Staples
store.

I think your situation has been helped tremendously by your bankers, who
seem to have maintained sobriety and skepticism and thus avoided the
sub-prime mortgage mess that our politicians/investment bankers/mortgage
lenders/aspiring home-owners have gotten us into. It is clear to me
that if the bankers and mortgage lenders here in the U.S. of A. had
shown more fiscal sense than greed, we would not be in nearly the mess
we are in now. The whole stinking pile of do-do required many actors to
do their part, and if one class of actors had refused to participate
then maybe things would have turned out a little different.

OK, I'll stop with the politics now, even though I'm flying under the
flag of economics...

I hear that the primary reason that the Canadian economy is doing better
than the US economy is that our housing industry is still strong. We are
still building and people are still paying higher prices for homes.
There is a suggestion that that is a bubble that will ultimately burst.

On the rising prices issue, I also note an ad in the local paper this
week for 7/16 aspenite sheathing for almost
$11 per sheet. Last summer I was paying between $7 and $8 and it had
been cheaper in the spring. I think it was under $7 early last year and
rose as the summer came.

Have not looked elsewhere to see if that is the going rate but suspect
it is.

Was in Lowes and Menards on Wednesday but did not think to check the
prices there as I had not yet seen that ad.

Are y'all seeing prices rising?

I was in Grand Forks ND yesterday. My good wife loves Kohl's and we
don't have them here so we have to go south once a month so she can get
another purse. May need to build on to the house in order to store them
soon.

In any event, I bought 4 trailer tires mounted on wheels in Menards on
March 17 for $44 each. Yesterday, the same things were $54. Quite a hike
in a bit over a month.

I've wanted to do straw, but it's labor intensive, concrete is not the ideal
stucco material, and the really good stuff like lime plaster takes skill to do.

Prefab domes erected by owner beat paying a contractor to assemble anything
else.

I'm leaning towards a sort of split level two story of conventional
construction. The garage floor will be a few feet higher than the basement
floor. The garage ceiling will be level with the first floor ceiling (13' or so
garage height), and the 2nd floor will be on top of the first floor and garage.
I figure it would take about $25k worth of materials to enclose 2000 sq feet of
living space and 700sq feet of garage. Exterior walls of 2x6 conventional
construction packed full of cellulose, wood basement with 2x8 walls, garage
foundation of foam lego blocks poured full of concrete.
Lots of untinted windows on the south side, with enough low-e glass on the other
three sides to make it legal (stupid California wankers sticking the whole
country with an air conditioning centric building code). Either that, or put
low-e glass all around on the plans and just install proper stuff on the south
wall, hope the inspectors are too stupid to notice. I think I could do the whole
thing for $60k and three months of my time.

One time I was looking at a Menard's house kit, and asked a builder friend how
much he'd charge (labor only) to build the frame. He quoted me $25k IIRC. You
know how many months I'd need to work to earn $25k? And now many weeks it would
take an inexperienced carpenter to frame a house? It'd be far better to take a
leave of absence and DIY.

Re: [MBZ] Prices rising? now SIPs

2010-04-30 Thread Rich Thomas
We're doing a timber frame addition. The frame can go up quickly (3-4
days as it is shipped all cut and ready to erect) and the SIPs are
probably another 4-5 days as they will be mostly cut at the fab
facility, some trimming on-site. I can have the whole addition up and
dried in less than 2 weeks, then I can start doing all the other work.
Much faster than a stick frame structure, and will be much better
insulated (though that aspect is not a huge issue here). I am more
interested in speed and the timber frame is aesthetic, and SIPs and
timber frames just make sense. SIPS for standard stick construction
will save money initially and in the long run too (construction labor
and insulating value) so that sorta offsets the higher initial cost for
material. Insect resistance is better too (good benefit for me).

The guy doing the actual construction work is an architect/builder that
does LEED/green construction, and had a SIP facility at his site but
got out of that and has outsourced to another local facility (or
something, not quite sure how they worked it out). I went up there and
visited the plant which basically consisted of a big glue squirter and
a hydraulic press to squeeze a stack of panels and foam and 2x's
together until the glue set up, and some work benches where they cut the
panels before shipping if that was specced. Fairly low tech, you could
pretty much do the same thing with a big stack of concrete blocks. A
4x24ft x 4.5 panel weighed maybe 150lb if that, fairly easy to deal
with. The foam comes with some holes cut for wire chases, and the
panels are marked so you know where they are.

I made a little blog if you are interested to follow the project, right
now I am waiting for the county to give me my permits, hope to have that
next week and get the foundation started soon thereafter if the concrete
guy ever gets back to me (he says he is starting to get busy, and is my
gating factor now).

I've been driving it for the past two weeks. That's how I know it
probably needs a new pump. When I put weight on the back with the
engine running the back doesn't come up. However if I drive down
the road with the load, in a few blocks with the bumps and all
the back end will come up from 15 at one mark on the bumper to
17 or within 2 of the normal ride height of 19 for that same
point. I guess that's not too bad with about 650 lbs back of the
wheels (5 bags of portland). It accelerates faster then the sedan
I have does and starts better. The engine sounds real good but
the transmission still occasionally slips on the 2-3 shift. I
still think it has something to do with the valve body (sticking
valve) but I'm not worried enough about it to go in after it.

[MBZ] '84 300D Hirschmann auto antenna gremlin(s)

2010-04-30 Thread glenn brown

Since there's been considerable talk recently regarding Hirschmann antennas, I
thought I'd query you guys as to what may be causing the Hirschmann auto
antenna on my '84 300D to be inoperative. Some of you may recall that I
replaced the left rear quarter panel last fall and removed the Hirschmann
antenna when this work was done (Note: I've previously removed the antenna to
clean the innards and reinstalled and all was fine). Upon reinstallating the
antenna after the left rear quarter was replaced and painted, I had a heckuva
time getting rid of a buzzing sound when the radio was on and
connected/reconnected the antenna numerous times and the automatic rise/lower
function of the antenna worked all during this time until I finally got rid of
the buzz and then the rise/lower function disappeared. I've since mechanically
raised the antenna mast and left the antenna unplugged . . . cheaper that way.
I just measured the continuity across the little motor (red green wires) in
the Hirschmann antenna case at 0.7 ohm. I've also measured voltage at the plug
which plugs onto the pins on top of the Hirschmann antenna case:

 Pin 6 = Gnd.

 Pin 1 to pin 6 = 0 VDC

 Pin 2 to pin 6 = 0 VDC

Pin 3 to pin 6 = ~ 11.3 VDC whether key/radion is on or off

 Pin 4 to pin 6 = ~ 12 VDC radio on; ~ 0.05 VDC radio off

 Pin 5 to pin 6 = ~ 12 VDC radio on; ~ 0.05 VDC radio off

Anyone got any clues? TIA.

copying/fax without a PC attached (i.e. internally) at that price.

FWIW standalone scanners are relatively cheap, and are often available
at thrift stores. :)

John/Craig, I also use HP, but my parallel scanner isn't supported
anymore. I can use it as a copier into the LJ5 though...

I just bought an Acer i7 chip machine with 6 or 8 Gigs of RAM (can't recall

hard drive etc for just under $1K. I could not buy the parts and put one
together for the cost in the local Staples

I've noticed that too, PC manufacturers are really doing an amazing
job keeping assembly margins low.

Yep, and the plus model is a smudge faster, but more importantly, it
duplexes.

Plus the 4/4+/5 series (no suffix or m suffix only) are some of the
cheapest per page, based on consumable costs.

Rated life of cartridges is/was conservative, and you would get quite
a bit more than the label said (10-20%!!!), plus no expiration date
chip in the cartridges, and no documented microdot date/serial number
encodings...

Grounding. There's a big knot of grounds back there, it
might be partially messed up. The new panel might have ended
up insulated from the rest. How's the braided ground cable
that goes to the antenna mast? Three things to check right
