Re: [MBZ] 450SL
On the /5 BMW motorcycles the cure to run on unleaded regular in place of leaded premium was dual plugs (drilling and tapping the heads for a second plug, then adding a second coil etc) and then when the valves caused problems, or preventatively, adding hardened seats. Valves were not replaced unless they were worn beyond limits, and then with the standard valves. The 450 needed premium leaded. I'd say put in the plugs with the 2 or 4 grounds, and try it on 10% ethanol gas. I think that will work. If you get pinging, the try adding a hot coil to put more fire to the plugs. The ethanol raises the octane rating. I have run all the MB gassers I ever had on regular unleaded with 10% ethanol and had no problem, but the 450 engine may be a little higher compression than the standard MB Gasser. I was going to say the same, I've got a '52 Farmall that hasn't seen leaded fuel in 20+ years. Hasn't ever had a lead substitute either. Re: [MBZ] 450SL
Actually, the myth was that the lead oxide produced an ablative coating -- that is, one that wears away but doesn't wear the underlying seat -- and protected the valve seats in cheapo crap Detroit motors with the valve seat (and guide) machined directly into the cast iron of the head. This is bunkum -- the lead oxide acts as a grinding compound on the valve seats, not a lubricant or ablative coating or any such nonsense, to say nothing of the lead oxide powder that got into the oil and goes through the filter. All you have to do is look a the seat when you take the valve out and see the nice, shiny ring on both valve and seat, unless there was so much crap on it that the valve didn't seat at all, which wasn't uncommon. Nor was a wad of melted lead oxide on the spark plug! Remember lead fouling where the deposits melted at high speed and load and shorted the plugs out? After all the screaming and bullshit, it turned out that not only was there no damage from using unleaded fuel in such engines, they typically lasted 100,000 miles longer when unleaded fuel was used. GM didn't stop using directly machined valve seats and guides until they started using aluminum heads, and the buggers go forever. Don't forget, leaded premium had up to 4 grams of lead per gallon in it -- you could get lead poisoning by pumping gas! [MBZ] 300SD AC compressor?
The Mamabenz threw the compressor belt the other day. I recharged the system (converted to 134) a coupla weeks back and it was BLOWING COLD (sorta) but the compressor was making graunching sounds, and the belt was squeaking and sorta floppy, though it seemed fairly tight at rest. I figured the compressor was on its last. Probably why the belt let go. I have a new set of belts to replace them all, so was gonna do that anyway, but probably should get a new compressor to keep mama happy. I have not particularly followed all the discussion on that -- what compressor would be appropriate or readily available (i.e., somewhat affordable), and considering the 134 conversion. The 79TD has a compressor on it that seemed to work the one time I put in a can of R12 (which soon leaked out), but don't know if that is where it was leaking or what. Possible swap? Or one from a junker? Or a new one of some sort? Hi Dwight - You wrote thought you were the oil guy :-) I kinda saw that coming! But I learned long ago there's always someone who knows more than I do - which is true for anyone IMO. Where are you located? (I know, I could look it up, but where's the fun it that?) I guess the Richmond Va area rec'd the new formulations first? I need to check the M1 site to see what they say. Rich mentioned a thread about oil recently - I missed it. It's been a tough summer. I've been preoccupied - the knee I had replaced last June is failing - so mobility is harder at the time I need to be up and around - plus, I'm doing some new stuff work wise which takes a lot of time. I'll either get a new knee next month or a spacer (Yuck - that's a bad option) which will be needed if infection is found during the surgery. Pre-surgery tests have been negative, but the doc is very cautious. If the spacer is used, it'll be in for 2-3 months and I won't be able to put weight on it. Fun, Huh? I'm running 5w-40 in both the 2.5T cars - run colls just fine, and stays at 85C even when it's 100F outside, after a highway run, and has 1.5 bar at idle. The other heats up to 105C in the same conditions, but still has 1.5 bar at idle. It's probably getting time to send samples in again - I'll check. Re: [MBZ] Was: Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts Now: Oil
Who cares? If it meets the CI-4 standard thats good enough for me. The car was leaking a quart in ~800 miles and I was changing at 3,000 miles so I used the cheapest oil I could get. The new Red 190D will get Mobil 1 5w40 and after analysis will probably get changes around 12,000 miles. The old car still had clean analysis reports at 15,000 but the engine sounded different so I changed and backed down to 12,000 mile changes. -Curt Date: Sat, 24 Jul 2010 10:07:45 -0400 From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts Message-ID: m16305x9am@cs.indiana.edu Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com writes: The Car Quest brand 15w40 is cheaper by the gallon than ANY oil at the big FLAPs too and only marginally more expensive than the cheapest Wal-Mart has. [MBZ] M1 5w40
We used to go through this all the time, I'm glad we're down to a couple times a year. IIRC Marshall said there were 3 MB blessed M1 formulations, 0w40, 15w50 and 5w40. What is now bottled as 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck used to be 5w40 Truck and SUV (that name is now used on a 5w30 I believe) and is the same stuff (less a boron tracer) as Delvac 1. Supposedly Delvac 1 met a slightly more stringent spec than the 0w40 or 15w50 but all are good oils. My '85 190D had a steady diet of 5w40 for 90,000 miles with no issues whatsoever. I liked it because it was thin and allowed easy starts in the winter time while not pouring out of ever seam like the 0w40. My '83 240D back before I went super discount had at some point each of the M1 formulations. The 0w40 made the car start much better in extreme (-20F) cold but leaked very badly even back before that engine leaked at its worst. 15w50 leaked much less and was still easier to start with in the winter time than conventional oil and the 5w40 was someplace in the middle. I get M1 5w40 at Autozone, about once a month they have a deal with 5 quarts and a filter for $25 at which point I usually get 10 quarts (five in the morning and five in the afternoon). I usually get a filter for the Ranger and put it in the truck when that goes to Spee-Dee for a change for which they credit me $5. I've also been using M1 5w40 in the motorcycles. When I first changed to it I noticed that shifts got a little more crisp. I also think my Honda CB900f has gotten a bit easier to start. Its a 4cyl and those bikes are notorious for hard cold starts and sometimes difficult restarts when fully warm. -Curt Date: Sat, 24 Jul 2010 10:16:57 -0400 From: Larry T l02tur...@comcast.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts Message-ID: 210e1d6de6da49368c0d6a1ebecc4...@laptop Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original I needed oil for our '91 300D (182K mi) and finally found some at Advance Auto - M1 Turbo Truck in 5W40. Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts
Both 5w40 and 15w40 should act like straight 40 weight when they are (all) hot. The difference between the two is that when the 5w40 is cold, it behaves like 5 weight at the same temperature (whatever is specified), and the 15w40 behaves like 15 weight... In between the specified low and high temperatures, the viscosities will be in-between the low value and the high value. Iirc, the M1 formula M is only available in 5w40, and is MB 229.51 approved (for all MB's) The current FASP (factory approved service products) list should show for certain. -- John W Reames jwrea...@comcast.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Jul 24, 2010, at 10:16, Larry T l02tur...@comcast.net wrote: I needed oil for our '91 300D (182K mi) and finally found some at Advance Auto - M1 Turbo Truck in 5W40. Re: [MBZ] M1 5w40
I don't think the Boron tracer was used to differentiate a retail vs commerical offerings. If I remember, the Boron tracer helped differentiate CAT DEO 5w40 from Mobil branded 5w40. I have not had much success with the 0w40 and have stuck with 5w40 occassionally using 15w50 in some MB's. My Jeep 4.0, Subaru, Kubotas, and Dodge truck all get some variant of Mobil 5w40 or Chevron or Mobil 15w40. The farm equipment generally gets 15w40. With new emissions requirements, I believe the Delvac formulations are now different whereas before we believed them to be the same. -Original Message- From: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com Sender: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com Date: Sat, 24 Jul 2010 10:23:18 To: Diesel Listmercedes@okiebenz.com Reply-To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] M1 5w40 We used to go through this all the time, I'm glad we're down to a couple times a year. [MBZ] Totaled Car
It just occurred that I had not updated the list on our Altima being totaled last month. Here's how it played out: It took the stealership almost two weeks to get the car checked out. I had to wail on them to the point where they wouldn't take my calls. Too bad the claims person at the insurance company we made the claim against was on vacation - I think she could have pushed them to get things done in more timely manner. Anyway, more about that shortly. I got a call from their settlement person, who gave me the amount they would total the car out at (about $5300). Once I sent them the title they would send me the check by overnight carrier. I did so and received the check shortly after. Very prompt and accommodating. I had also made a claim against them for the per diem, arguing that even though they were willing to provide a rental for my son, he couldn't do it as he was not 18. My point was that he had to rely on friends and acquaintances to haul him around for the duration of his stay, thereby incurring expenses to do so. They paid us $25/day for the duration of the claim period, which was about three weeks. I think we got about $600.00 for that. Now the last thing - his return airfare. Since it's the responsibility of the insurer at fault to make you whole I'm thinking they should pay for his return fare, since his car was totaled and it would have been his way back. They balked a little on this, but prevailing wisdom ruled, and they reimbursed me for the cost of his airfare, too. All in all it was not an unpleasant experience. The only bad part was trying to work with the dealer they had the car taken to, as they were total asses. I fixed their wagon, however, as I expressed my displeasure about this to the claims person, who had someone call me and take down all of the information (including dates, times, and names) to follow up. Apparently, this stealership has just recently signed on to work with this insurer, and they were very interested in feedback regarding their work. Anyway, the youngster now drives a really nice red 2005 Ford Focus ZR5 SES that I found for him through a local Ford dealer I know. Despite being a bad experience, it ended up being a good one, for the most part. The insurer was Encompass. Re: [MBZ] CL Scam?
Given the wording I would say scam, note they make no mention of the car they want to buy, don't indicate that they want to see/drive the car and it just seems like an standard scamail, spewed out by the thousands. However one way to see if it's a scam is to google their email address, which in this case does not come up, or use the body of the email and google that and guess what, entering: hanks for the prompt response to my mail.I will be buying from you so please kindly withdraw the advert from C.LIST. Please be informed that i will be paying with a certified check from my Bank .I will need the following details to mail the payment as soon as possible. 1.Name to be on the payment _2.Home address__ City_State _ Zip Code___3.Cell phone #__I will make arrangements for the pick up as soon as you have your money .I am completely satisfied with the advert and the payment will be delivered within 2-3 working days.** I use a hearing impaired phone # and will receive your calls via email ** Thanks Brings up 616 results, hmmnh busy buyer. I would recommend not replying, if they are really interested in the car they will write again. Hendrik Kaleb C. When my parents' car got totaled last year, that's what Farm Bureau wanted to do. Give the free and clear title in exchange for a verbal promise of a check. But that's how we do business. Well, the way I do business is not to give away my car without a written agreement. I think they ended up sending the check to the agent, who exchanged title for check. Fun, Huh? I'll be looking for that sample -- ;-) LarryT 91 300D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
