Re: [MBZ] The E420 Lives!
Nice tip Philip. I had a master machine shop guy tell me some of that many years ago but he didn't explain it and I failed to grasp it well enough to use it to my benefit. You did good, now I'll use it. Thanks Harry Reusing copper seal rings generally works fine _IF_ you anneal the copper before re-installing. Since copper work hardens, and hardens if it is heated and allowed to cool slowly (opposite of iron) then the process to anneal is to get it hot and cool it quickly. I learned this trick when working on light aircraft. 1. Fire up a propane torch (gas stove, ox-acetylene, etc) 2. Hold the ring in the flame. Don't use your fingers. :) I like using a wire 'cause it doesn't act as a heat sink and the ring heats up pretty evenly. 3. Once the copper reaches glowing red, quench it in water. (Be careful in sunlight. It can be harder to see the glow and its possible to make the copper molten.) Now the copper is full-soft and will easily conform to the sealing surfaces. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The slip clutches can wear out and fail; had it happen on a 91 corolla; back in 2000, the motor alone was $300. With the w210 (canbus versions), the rear motors are smart insofar as they have the door control module integrated with them. The fronts are separate from the door control module. Not doing this only disables the express up/down feature on that window. (you have to do the same thing when reconnecting the battery and it is documented in the OM. And don't even get me started on all those wretched Subies and Dodges that don't even have shrouds in their 'fog' lamps, which are much more like blinding high beams mounted down low than anything suitable for use in extremely foggy conditions. On an MB, if you find yourself needing to open your driver's door in order to see the stripe, in order to stay on the road as you creep along, you can turn on the fog lamps instead (and perhaps turn off the lows) and creep along in more safety and comfort. _That_ is what fog lights are for. Re: [MBZ] More W124 rear suspension rebuilding
Update: after about 15(!) hours I finished the job. Stopped twice to eat. I was rather sore on Sunday morning... Sad news for OK Don: the Sir Tools $100 bushing press did not survive unscathed. It worked great on the '95 car, but my '87 wagon proved to be made of firmer stuff (or perhaps rustier/older). The center bolt, with Acme threads, stripped while trying to pull out the old bushing. I finally figured out a way to use the HF ball joint C-clamp in combination with the ST press and got'er done, but probably lost a few hours messing around with that bushing alone. A new center bolt will make the tool usable again - have sent inquiry to seller to see if they can do a warranty replacement. I was also slowed down because I ordered one wrong strut - I was confused about the whole M10 vs. M12 issue and mis-matched the bolt kit vs. the strut. I think that for future reference, the proper thing to do is order all M12 stuff when replacing all the struts - the wheel carrier mounting points will accept the M12 but would need the sleeves for the M10 bolts. While figuring out the problem, I spent some time consulting the FSM and then my order vs. the EPC and found my mistake. New order to Rusty forthcoming; next side SHOULD go faster. Of note, the outer bushing for the spring link was totally shot; these joints have accordion rubber boots on each side, and the old joint had no rubber boots left and thus no grease but lots and lots of play. -Max From: Max Dillon meadedil...@bellsouth.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sat, December 11, 2010 2:26:07 PM Subject: [MBZ] More W124 rear suspension rebuilding Dieselvolk, This a.m. I dove into rebuilding the rear suspension on my '87 wagon. Started by pulling the spring link on the right side, and replaced the inner bushing using a piece of 3/8 acme threaded rod. Took about 2.5 hours to do that. Incidentally, the sleeve for the inner bushing is not tapered on this car like it was on my '95 E300. Replacement bushing is same part number as for the '95. The original bushing in this '87 300TD has a head at one end of the inner-most sleeve, which I had to cut off in order to get clearance to push the bushing out. My theory is that the 124 wagons are more complex / more expensive to maintain and repair, but the owners for the most part are frugal (compared to average MB owner) and don't keep them up well so the end result is a car that will need a lot of $$ and time invested to bring back to a reasonable driving condition, where as a 123 wagon is much less costly to make the same repairs (one can easily spend $1000 on rear suspension parts for a 124, as I've recently discovered, twice...). -Max From: andrew strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Mon, December 13, 2010 11:00:42 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] who wanted a 300D? Re: [MBZ] Unhappy Brake Noises
Can you apply a little air pressure and get the stuck piston to move out? Once you can see the bore, you can condemn or rebuild. I finally have a small air compressor and used this method when I rebuilt the calipers on my '95 E300, works pretty slick but you need to modulate the pressure and use something other than fingers to 'catch' the piston. -Max (fingers much better now, thank you). I think these have insert bulbs and are not sealed beams. I also assume they are not original as they have Volvo imprinted in the glass. The problem I have is that there is a huge difference between high and low beam. I find the low beam does not provide sufficient view ahead and unfortunately most of the time it is not possible to use high beam due to other traffic. The SLS struts for the 124 wagon are not the same as the 123 I'm pretty sure; I replaced my leaking struts last summer with a $150 used set in really nice condition. Re: [MBZ] W123 Transmission manual
The way torrents work is: Find a torrent from one of the many Torrent sites for the subject you are looking for - but before you do that, donload and install one of the torrent downloaders like utorrent or bittorrent (www.bittorrent.com) Click Download on the Torrent for the desired subject - the Open when the menu pops up. It will open Bit torrent or utorrent as you chose and request a location to save the downloaded file. it will take a while to download depending on how many people are also downloading the same file. After you download a file you are asked to leave your utorrent/bittorrent open so the file you downloaded can be downloaded by others. The more who do this, the faster downloads occur. I've had 1 hour TV programs download in 10 minutes and car images take weeks. Once the file is downloaded you can view it if the form is pdf or similar. If it is a rar file you will have to get a translator. But no big deal regardless. As with anything having to do with the net and downloads, it's a good idea to have a effective antivirus in effect. I use Norton provided by Comcast which has caught all the bugs so far. I know it is considered illegal to download copyrighted material - unless it is considered a library or a loan from a friend - then it's OK - but digital libraries are a no-no. Just so you'll know the official line.. Let me know if you have any questions. Re: [MBZ] Headlights Q
I can look again but I believe it says H3 on the lens. I thought that normally, 2 lamp systems had larger diameter than 4 lamp systems back in the day when we all used sealed beam lamps. Am I wrong? In any event, these definitely have both high and low beam. The 115 has only 2 lamps obviously apart from the fog lights. They work ok too as additional close light but not too good for travel at highway speeds - if I remember right, they also go out when one switches to low beam. I do not do a lot of night driving any more but find that I need much more light than I once did. I drove the MB back from the lake 2 summers ago in the dark and it was an awful trip. I felt like I was driving through a tunnel for a good part of it. Part is 2 lane and much of the 4 lane part is close enough to the other side that one cannot run on high beam most of the time. Add to that the concern about wildlife on the road and it is not a pleasant trip. So, I am looking for better light in case I have to do it again. I had a set of the Bosch in a Chevy back in about 1975 and remember them as being good. I also had a single one in my 1979 Goldwing. I think I still have it but only one so I don't think I want to do this until I have two and it won't get actually installed until April likely as it is cold here and the car is in the garage for the duration. I put the battery tender on it yesterday and that is about all I will likely do with it until the weather warms up a lot unless I decide to haul seats inside and work on them in the basement. Not so. I can show you h3 headlights with hi-low. The /5 BMWs all came out with H3 headlights. The /6 series came out with the h4. Mr/Mrs/Ms Dieselhead, i have seen several applications of H3s where they were used in separate High and Low lamps (my 1150 Oilhead is one example), but if you can just how me a link to any spec anywhere that states that H3 bulbs have more than one filament, i'll believe you. so far, i've never seen any reference to any H3 bulb that had more than one filament, especially since they have a completely different base than H4s and only single-wire leads instead of connectors. (i checked again briefly just for giggles, but didn't find anything like a dual-filament H3 listed anywhere, including Osram/Sylvania and Hellas websites.) doesn't mean it didn't happen, but i've yet to see it and would appreciate it if you can help show me an example. cheers! e On 13/Dec/10 13:58, Dieselhead wrote: Not so. Dieselvolk, I'm putting together a Rusty-gram to get the rubber and hardware bits so that I can rebuild the rear suspension on my '95 E300. I'm planning to go whole hog: differential to sub frame mounts, sub frame to body mounts, and all the various bushings and torque arms and struts that hold the wheel carrier in position. I'm expecting at least a boat ride at this year's Rusty-Q, as I've probably already made two or three of his boat payments. ..My first memory is the headlamps on 1985 1/2 Ford Escorts, but there might have been an LTD or Thunderbird or something with fixed headlamps before then. Or I might be wrong in remembering Ford as the innovator that got the law changed... Back in the sixties the furrin car accessory stores in Washington started importing Euro lights and they sold very well. Lucas, Bosch, Hella, Marchal etc. And everybody with sealed beams in a post-66 Porsche wanted the twin H-1 units. The state cops began pulling over a few people and harassing them about their lights. Finally, the local car clubs got together, wrote a new State regulation allowing their lights and hired an attorney to present it to the State Commission On Equipment for approval. The entire Commission consisted of a State Patrol Captain sitting behind an old green metal desk in Olympia. In due course, he approved the change in wording and the Legislature OKd it. The Feds didn't like that a State had the temerity to overrule them but when the lights were made legal in a driver's home state, they couldn't be ticketed elsewhere. Something similar happened in re: XKE covered headlights in California but I can't recall when, being no student of Jags. If they're lighting up any road such that you could drive faster than about 20MPH with them alone, then they're mis-aimed IMHO. And don't even get me started on all those wretched Subies and Dodges that don't even have shrouds in their 'fog' lamps, which are much more like blinding high beams mounted down low than anything suitable for use in extremely foggy conditions. I share your irritation. The cars that have their sharp-cutoff low beams aimed exactly horizontal should be ticketed, too. On an MB, if you find yourself needing to open your driver's door in order to see the stripe, in order to stay on the road as you creep along, you can turn on the fog lamps instead (and perhaps turn off the lows) and creep along in more safety and comfort. I've driven in those conditions in a blizzard. The car I was driving, though, didn't have fog lights. The electronic speedometers do tick. There's a stepper motor that drives the odometer chain. Our later 107's and the 126's do this. The high-miles 107 ticks louder than the others. That's a relief; thank you for that bit of information.
