[MBZ] OT: Viruses, Trojans
Malwarebytes found PUM.Hijack.Sta.. and removed it. Not much info on Google about it. Here's one comment: It's a Potentially Unwanted Modification. Emphasis on potentially unwanted. That means a setting that *may* have been changed by malware - or something you may have knowingly changed yourself. I wouldn't be too concerned by it. The main thing is that mbam found no further traces of zbot. http://forums.v3.co.uk/showthread.php?t=210459page=2 Is PUM.Hijack.Sta. a Trojan Zbot? Could this have been causing problems with another members sending/receiving emails? Should AVG Antivirus have caught it? Since AVG is seemingly under new ownership, and since it's daily scans are much shorter than previously, I'm wondering if AVG is as good under the new ownership as it was under the previous ownership? If not, which is a good free antivirus program? Hans, If I recall correctly, the steering gearbox has to be removed to reseal it, and there are special tools required for installing the seal. No special tools per se to get the guts out, but you do need a special spanner to get the internal piston apart and to set the internal friction. We did the one out of my new 300D to swap into my brother's 300E after it blew it's seals too -- not a bad job. Does anyone know if a tandem pump was ever made with v-belt pulleys? It seems like the simple thing would be to replace the PS pump with a tandem pump. Then a SLS head is not needed, as the tandem pump provides the SLS pressure. The tandem pumps I have seen on the 124 wagons all were made for serp belts. I believe the 85 TD has v-belts. Since you are so close to PGA, why not drive over there and ask them if a tandem pump can be modified to fit your OM617? This was in refernece to the SLS head-free 1985 300TD. [MBZ] 1980 300SD Modulator Valve
To all...a very Happy New Year... This is an odd request, but I thought maybe...so I'll ask. The transmission modulator valve on this car has a plastic piece that connects to the valve on one side and the vacuum line connects on the other end. Mine is cracked and causing the tranny to shift hard. My Indie tried to epoxy it, but no joy as it is not holding (something about too much oil on a plastic part for the epoxy to hold). Anyway, would anyone have an old valve with a good plastic vacuum connector? I'd be happy to pay for the part and shipping. MBUSA says they have 5 of these connectors and they are all in Germany. I don't want to order the whole valve as I don't need the valve and it's about 4 times more expensive than just the connector. Thanks for any leads, parts, assistance. [MBZ] Help! I hate my Becker Monza
My '78 240D came with a Becker Monza, it seemed like a nice enough box but there are a couple things about it that are driving me CRAZY! #1. It'll decide it doesn't like whatever I'm listening to and seek another station. This seems to frequently happen when I'm listening to NPR, apparently its a Republican. #2. It'll decide it doesn't want to go to the preset I've chosen, the display shows -- and it stays on the station its on. Sometimes if I chose a preset 3, 4 or 5 times it'll go, sometimes now. #3. Sometimes it'll beep LOUDLY (loud enough you can hear it outside the car with the windows up) and the display shows No TP. Apparently my Republican radio needs toilet paper. #4. It'll allow you to select radio stations on a .1 basis even though those stations don't exist. I'm a station flipper which means I have to hit next twice for every one band advancement. This is just poor design in my estimation. #5. Its too choosy, the seek function is just about useless because it'll only lock onto super strong stations. In my area that means it'll only lock on to the classical station. Apparently my Republican, toilet bound radio is a fan of Wagner... Anyway unless I can resolve the first 3 issues this thing is outta here. I never thought I'd say this but I'd even take one of those stupid big screen tuner kid radios over this stupid thing. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Help! I hate my Becker Monza
Curt, Sounds like you're got a radio designed for the european market. I don't think Becker ever sold a US version of a Monza. It also sounds like a digital radio, which means its probably not original since these really started in 1979. And, it sounds like you need a tuneup/repair. Not surprising after 25-30 years of service. The guys at Becker Autosound can do this for a reasonable price: http://www.beckerautosound.com/ Its also possible you have an antenna issue. Check all connections, ensure the antenna is well grounded, and that its all the way up. Re: [MBZ] W123 TDC
Assuming you can't find, or don't trust the mark on the crank, and its pointer... Remove #1 Injector line, cap injector and pump remove injector remove prechamber ring (special tool) Remove prechamber (Special slidehammer puller) Now the official way is to use a dial indicator bolted to the head. I never had that, so I never did that. My BMW R75/5 came with a small rod for finding/confirming TDC. I use it. It is about 3/16 dia and 8 long with the ends rounded. I watch the cam as you slowly rotate the engine in the proper direction After the intake lobe closes the intake valve, turn a little further, then stick the rod in the cyl as you rotate. It helps to have a helper hold the rod. At the instant the rod stops rising, mark the crankshaft pulley at the pointer. Rotate 2-3 degrees more, until the rod starts to descend, and mark the crank pulley at the pointer again. After you have done this 3-4 times and corrected for any tardiness in marking the crank pulley, TDC should be in the middle of the marks. This procedure is in the OM621 book, and I htink it is in the 616/617 book also, with the part numbers of all the special tools. If you want quicker to confirm the timing mark is reasonably near, pull a GP and fir a 1/8 hose nipple to an old GP body. Put 3' or so of 1/8 vacuum hose on the nipple after it is installed in #1 Hold the other end near your ear while you turn the engine. Same process Mark the crank where it stops blowing in your ear, and again when you hear it start to draw air in. TDC roughly in the middle between the marks. Not as accurate. Can someone provide a quick/dirty description of how to find/set TDC in a W123 ('85 300TD)? TIA. G. M. Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Mercedes 1985 300td wagon - as is - $1000 (Plainfield, MA)
I would not be surprised that maybe some euro with SLS in 84-85 might have a tandem pump with v-belt pulley. MB often does one off things in transition years. Witness the 1981 only auto trans for the 240D with no cable or other secondary input. 100% vacuum only. If PGA or the classic center could identify such a model, then the pump should bolt on the OM 617. What about the euro 84-85+ - 500 SEL 126? did it have the pump on the head? It is also possible that you can take the pulley off the PS pump and bolt in on a tandem pump. I am just suggesting that spending a little time in a junkyard looking at tandem pumps, and knowing the pulley bolt pattern for your PS pump pulley and the bolt pattern for mounting the PS pump, you MIGHT come up with a solution easier than removing a good engine and replacing it with a questionable engine. I know there were at least 2 different tandem pumps. At least one type is a Vickers. The one I rebuilt on the 88 TE was a vickers, and I had to have every number off the pump to get the right kit. I wouldn't want to mess with that either. Hi Jamie, True enough, this car probably came with a Europa. The Monza seems nice but it also seems like it doesn't fit with what I want from a radio, it also doesn't have an Aux port... I've got a newish (last year) Kenwood thats going to go into one of the cars (it was in my '85 190D) but I can't decided if it should replace the Monza or the Grand Prix in the '84 190D. -- Kaleb C. [MBZ] 2.5 turbo problem
Wife calls this morning says the car is running rough and has no power. She gets to work and says there is smoke pouring out the back. My immediate thought is the head gasket blew between #1 and timing chain. Re: [MBZ] 2.5 turbo problem
Could be a number of things, but the most likely is a blown head gasket. Are you SURE it's not oil smoke? A bad turbo can suddenly dump oil into the intake. Check each cylinder by cracking the injection line, a dead one could be either very low compression (check the camshaft for seriously worn lobes) or a blown head gasket. Check the coolant for pressure and oil, of course. I have seen via a friend on PeachParts a 2.5L head that spalled off something terrible, caused very low compression and pretty much totaled out the engine. No indication prior to serious bad running and noise. If you have two poor cylinders, but not a single dead one, it's likely the gasket has blow between them. They can also blow out on the last one at the firewall (#5 in this case) into the bolt holes and/or the oil return passage. If you did blow the front cylinder into the chain case, likely you also have a bent #1 rod and subsequent cylinder damage. We do have 5 rods and pistons available for a stock engine (original 1986 300SDL) if you need one. [MBZ] Radio funnies
Got around to pulling the nasty Blaupunkt aftermarket radio in the 300D today -- antenna stopped working a while back. I have the original that was swapped about 4 years ago or so to get a CD player, but I'm somewhat less than excited about the Blaupunkt and wanted to yank it. So I pulled it out and stuck the factory replacement in there (not the original, it's a warrenty replacement, factory recon). No response from the radio. I thought the worst I would get would be a line across the display, but I get nothing at all. Haven't checked the fuse yet (on the radio) and will have to make a run to the local electronics supply store and get some heat shrink tubing -- all the wires on the conversion harness have been spliced by stripping back and twisting them together, then adding lots of electrical tape. Too lazy to solder or use a cheap crimp connecter, drives me nuts. Might explain why it worked erratically, eh? Funny thing is that the antenna now works off the dash switch with or without the factory Becker! At least that isn't blown up! Any hints on why the blasted factory radio doesn't work? I assume it has power, and I did not energize it with the alarm wires off (although I may have plugged in the 5-wire cable first at some point). It's always something, eh? Thanks, Russ, good to know. A full feature version of M-Bytes is only $25 per year and it appears that it can be programmed to update and run at whatever interval you choose.
