Modern lubricants don't go bad and get gummy like the old natural oils did About two years ago I acquired a very beat up old Omega that I thought would be worth having restored. After easing the dents out of the case and polishing out the scuffs and scratches, throwing away the non-Omega crystal and cheap metal band, a correct crystal was installed after a complete cleaning. Honestly? No and no. I didn't realize the case of the dropped zero until I'd already buttoned up and the snow started in earnest. I'm thinking slightly too loose new bearings are better than too tight old munched bearings with at least 3 different grease formulations (judging by the color people have added grease over the years but never removed any). When the snow stops I'll go back out and tighten. It looks as though my dial indicator isn't really up to the job so I'll wing it. I did that on my '83 240D and had 25,000 trouble free miles. The MB grease comes in 150g tubes so I use just around half, this is my fifth bearing with that game, 25k on the 240, 10k on the other 190D. Other than not replacing the races the first time I did the other 190D and ruining a bearing set that way I think I'm doing okay. -Curt Date: Fri, 7 Jan 2011 20:04:34 -0700 From: Craig diese...@pisquared.net To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] ATTENTION CURT!!! [MBZ] Old AMG catalog for Manfred...
Sorry for the delay Manfred, but I was a bit busy over the holidays. I've tried to reduce the size of the pics as much as I can, while still keeping the image clean enough so that the text can be read. Not sure the best way to do this, but I'll post a number of messages to the list, each with a picture. I think that is the best way, as combining them all in one message would be waaay to big. Due to the size, they'll have to wait approval, so I've number the pictures firstly in page order, than page content, so those not interested can just delete them. Again, this was a catalog from the mid eighties if memory serves, when AMG were still independent. These catalogs were not given out, I paid $15 1985 dollars for it. I think they charged to keep it out of the hands of common riff-raff, and yet I still managed to get my hands on a copy! :-) hee hee Ed 300E...that had dreams of being a HAMMER when it was younger. :-) -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Everything I've ever towed I've used a truck to yank it around with so weight was never an issue. So what must the dry weight of a camper trailer be knowing the E320 can tow 4400Lbs? Installation was quite easy with the included wiring harness. No modification to the car's wiring was necessary, everything plugged in. The euro ball is fixed and about 2. You can kind of see it in this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/5298585478/ You can probably get a US aftermarket one also. Re: [MBZ] Buick straight eight (was More Holes)
Buick Straight Eight Lore: The engine we are writing about was first used in the 1936 Buick Roadmaster. There were earlier Buick Straight Eights, IIRC. The last year for the 1936-derived engine was the 1953 Series 40 Buick Special. Other series had the new for 1953 nailhead V8. In 1953 I was one of a group that traveled from Central Texas to the Big Bend National Park and points nearby in a 1941 Buick Super Club Coupe. The club coupe was packed with people and stuff. The Buick had what was called compound carburetion. It had two carburetors, one of which functioned all the time, and the second when the driver stepped on it. I remember several times seeing the speedometer vault from about 60 mph to about 90 mph when he stepped on it. The straight eight was not underpowered in the least. As I remember the car had three little square or rectangular holes in the chrome trim in the vicinity of the hood release (on the side of the hood near the back) that might have been the first tentative ventiports, although the story is that they came after the War, not before. Those were the days. 5. Good idea to have them listed. Also, be sure to get a few clear pictures of you wearing the watches. A friend had a very hard time making a claim on a ring, after it was stolen. It was included in his policy, but the insurance company seemed to put the onus on him, to prove that he in fact was previously in possession of the ring. Both watches sound very nice. If not worn often, or only for special occasions, might be worth keeping them in a safety deposit box at the bank. Re: [MBZ] Wheel bearings
I have had success tightening the bearing until I can feel the resistance to spinning the tire increase. Then I loosen it 1/3 turn for general use, or 1/4 turn if I want it tight. I never had a .0001 dial indicator, so I can't tell you if it on the spec for sure. I can say that it is tight enough the steering does not wander, and loose enough so that the bearings don't overheat and burn out. I have probably a cumulative million miles on MBs done this way. I have never had a bearing failure. If the thread pitch is 1mm, 1/4 turnlosens the bearing and then you get maybe 1/8 mm of free play. .040/8 would be .005, which is too much (by a factor of 10) by the book. Perhaps most of the 1/4 turn relieves the stress on the bearing and I end up with the correct .0006. This only way to check for sure is to get a very accurate dial indicator and try to get a reading. If you were doing serious track competition, it should be measured. For my use, this works fine. When you are out in the field it is not possible to check this by the book so it is good to know there is a by feel method that works. :-) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] watch costs
I've become partial to the Bulova Accutron lately. I like the smooth motion of the second hand and the hum when you hold it to your ear. Luckily, mine is one that nicely handles the new, wrong voltage, battery. That having been said, I dug out the old Hamilton wind-up watch that my Dad set aside when he bought an auto-wind Omega in the '60s, and wound it up two days ago - with one wind the next day, it's still within a minute of correct time. Not bad for a watch that has been sitting in drawers for 50 years or so. The secret to watch photos is broad, diffused light. I pulled out a bunch of stopper bottles, and had one I had sorta forgotten about -- and Ipswich Brewery Oatmeal Stout bottle, not quite a liter size but pretty big. Quite appropriate! Sounds like you had some tasty brews, I bought a bunch of various 22s for Thanksgiving and Christmas and we had quite a selection, that was fun tasting and sharing a bunch of different brews. relng...@aol.com wrote: I haven't taken any watch pictures. The non-professional pics I've seen are never too good. Maybe I'll play around with it a bit. Photographing suggestions. * Don't use the flash. It will make the picture flat - and probably cause glare. A bright windowsill on a cloudy day can work very well. * Make _sure_ the watch is in focus. If you can't get it to focus when the camera is close enough to the watch to fill the frame, try setting the camera for it's highest resolution and then crop the picture so the only thing left in the picture is the watch. * A tripod can be very helpful to avoid jiggles. * A black - or a white - background can be impressive, but it's also tricky for the automatic meter. The meter will do a better job if the background is the brightness of medium gray. The color doesn't matter so long as the brightess is the same as medium gray. * A background with color may confuse the auto-color circuit and make the watch colors wrong - or maybe enhance them. If you don't like the coloring of the final image, experiment with colored backgrounds. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
