An Omega labeled Alligator brown strap was fitted. It is now too pretty to

Ahh for that you want to consult Terry Marsh:
http://terrence.marsh.faculty.noctrl.edu/lantern/index.htm
Unfortunately I didn't find yours there. When you say straight glass is it
really 4 panes of glass? Is the S.M.B really S.M.P? In which case what
you've got there is an SMP Mil Spec. http://www.lampenmaxe.de/smp.php

Mil Spec are Coleman designed lanterns made of the military by 3 different
manufacturers, Coleman, AGM and SMP in order of descending quality. SMP
lanterns (IIRC) were made with prison labor...

Mil Spec lanterns are notoriously hard to light and VERY loud and fiddly. Lord
only knows why we stuck our armed forces with them when Coleman had a bunch of
other good designs.

Stamped into the bottom of the tank  is US S.M.B 1984.  It

This was in a box with other stuff at a recent auction.

Honestly? No and no.
I didn't realize the case of the dropped zero until I'd already buttoned up and
the snow started in earnest. I'm thinking slightly too loose new bearings are
better than too tight old munched bearings with at least 3 different grease
formulations (judging by the color people have added grease over the years but
never removed any). When the snow stops I'll go back out and tighten. It looks
as though my dial indicator isn't really up to the job so I'll wing it. I did
that on my '83 240D and had 25,000 trouble free miles.

The MB grease comes in 150g tubes so I use just around half, this is my fifth
bearing with that game, 25k on the 240, 10k on the other 190D. Other than not
replacing the races the first time I did the other 190D and ruining a bearing
set that way I think I'm doing okay.

[MBZ] Old AMG catalog for Manfred...

2011-01-08 Thread E M
Sorry for the delay Manfred, but I was a bit busy over the holidays. I've
tried to reduce the size of the pics as much as I can, while still keeping
the image clean enough so that the text can be read. Not sure the best way
to do this, but I'll post a number of messages to the list, each with a
picture. I think that is the best way, as combining them all in one message
would be waaay to big. Due to the size, they'll have to wait approval, so
I've number the pictures firstly in page order, than page content, so those
not interested can just delete them.

Again, this was a catalog from the mid eighties if memory serves, when AMG
were still independent. These catalogs were not given out, I paid $15 1985
dollars for it. I think they charged to keep it out of the hands of common
riff-raff, and yet I still managed to get my hands on a copy! :-) hee hee

2011-01-08 Thread Bob Rentfro
Everything I've ever towed I've used a truck to yank it around with so
weight was never an issue.

So what must the dry weight of a camper trailer be knowing the E320 can tow

 Buy one of these:

I bought one for my '95 E320 wagon and its very nice. Installation was
quite easy with the included wiring harness. No modification to the car's
wiring was necessary, everything plugged in. The euro ball is fixed and
 about 2.

You can kind of see it in this picture:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/5298585478/

You can probably get a US aftermarket one also. I went with the german one
due to the much higher weight rating and higher quality wiring harness.

Re: [MBZ] Buick straight eight (was More Holes)

2011-01-08 Thread Robert Bigham
Buick Straight Eight Lore:

The engine we are writing about was first used in the 1936 Buick
Roadmaster. There were earlier Buick Straight Eights, IIRC. The
last year for the 1936-derived engine was the 1953 Series 40 Buick
Special. Other series had the new for 1953 nailhead V8.

In 1953 I was one of a group that traveled from Central Texas to
the Big Bend National Park and points nearby in a 1941 Buick Super
Club Coupe. The club coupe was packed with people and stuff.

The Buick had what was called compound carburetion. It had two
carburetors, one of which functioned all the time, and the second
when the driver stepped on it. I remember several times seeing the
speedometer vault from about 60 mph to about 90 mph when he stepped
on it. The straight eight was not underpowered in the least.

As I remember the car had three little square or rectangular holes in
the chrome trim in the vicinity of the hood release (on the side of
the hood near the back) that might have been the first tentative
ventiports, although the story is that they came after the War, not
before.

Those were the days.

search cal+321 frequently because I have a Seamaster cal 321 black

traditional case - but that is the way they did things in those dark

seem to be fewer Seamaster chrono usually. This may be your gold

1984 would be S123 chassis, I assume with OM617. AFAIK, only the yanks and the
japs, and maybe the canuks, ever got a turbo on their OM617. I've seen a couple
of euro S123, both of them were 617NA with 4sp manual trans and cloth seats.

The bumpers on this one look kind of small, (euro), the seats might be velor
(euro), the tranny is auto and the headlamps are USA. Oh, and it's got hubcaps
when a USA car would have come standard with bundts. I'd say its a converted
euro with an automatic. The VIN should tell you what engine it has (or
originally had)

Andrew wants a 1985 turbo wagon, I think the non-California version.

Wasn't the turbo to do with having room for it, as the steering wheel was on
the other side of the engine bay on left hand drive cars? If that's true,

[MBZ] MB clock WAS: OT Watch question

2011-01-08 Thread Dieselhead
I have a very nice 50s- 60s VDO style clock with a 3 face set in an
Aluminum block. I think it was a MBCA or MB Dealer item. We got it
as a prize at an MBCA meeting. It looks very much like a 108 clock,
but is about 50% larger.

I just looked on the MBCA and mBUSa sites and neither show the clock.
MBCA tends to have items for several years, so my guess is that it
was a dealer item.

If that is NLA, a 108 clock is nice, if smaller.

Good idea to have them listed. Also, be sure to get a few clear pictures of
you wearing the watches. A friend had a very hard time making a claim on a
ring, after it was stolen. It was included in his policy, but the insurance
company seemed to put the onus on him, to prove that he in fact was
previously in possession of the ring.

Both watches sound very nice. If not worn often, or only for special
occasions, might be worth keeping them in a safety deposit box at the bank.

advanced search utility, title+description, any ebay, any country.  I
search cal+321 frequently because I have a Seamaster cal 321 black
dial of the same vintage.  I hate the cushion case, prefer rather the
traditional case - but that is the way they did things in those dark

seem to be fewer Seamaster chrono usually.  This may be your gold

BZZT, WRONG. Mind your decimals. These bearings are supposed to be tight.

 0.01 / 25.4 0.0004.

 0.006 is easily discernible motion.
0.0006 feels totally unyielding to the hand.
The least I can feel is about 0.002-0.003

That's right, on a typical dial indicator graduated in thousandths, I
set the play to be about half of one segment on the dial, or maybe a
little less. It's an estimate, but a dial indicator that read
ten-thousandths (or hundredths of mm) was not something I felt was worth
the cost.

I found that even tightening the allen-head screw to lock the nut in
place changed the play by a few thousandths. So what I had to to was
get it just slightly too loose (something closer to .001), then when I locked
the nut in place it
ended up being correct.

[MBZ] 140 update

2011-01-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
the brand new glow plug wiring harness arrived from Rusty
yesterday so today I put it on and put the intake etc back on
(made MUCH easier by my purchase of HF allen T wrenches. Still no
glow plug light. I stole the one off my 91 350SDL and it glows
and starts fine. I guess maybe the shorting out fried the old
relay. I tell you having never messed with pulling heads,
replacing rods etc I am sure nervous the whole thing will fly
apart. BTW, this is the engine I just replaced the #1 rod with
the updated heavier rod. Just from my observation I dont sense
any different vibrations even though the weight does not match the
other rods. Will see what time holds for it though.

Probably S.M.P. There's a bit of rust right there and so the

Technically most of us on those lists went along when it got to be

Actually the vets list was never part of the original diesel list,
it was its own separate list which Richarde hosted after Alex as
you said. When the meltdown happened, I kept the vets list
separate and there is still a v...@okiebenz.com list. There is
never any traffic there though and I suspect you are correct most
of those people moved over the the main list (diesel or otherwise)
at some point.

Now that I know what to look for (mil spec, smp) I'm finding info.

One comment about what to do with it.

The other way is to what I have done which is to clean
the lamp and put it on a shelf to be admired but never
  run.

Actually I realise I am wrong there is a third way which
is to dig a big hole and carefully place the lamp at the
bottom and backfill - preferably with a good strong

[MBZ] MB clock WAS: OT Watch question

2011-01-08 Thread Dieselhead
I looked closer at the MB clock. On the face it says Mercedes
Benz. On the back it says Mercedes Benz Classic. There is a
tag on it with 6-6-04-3098. So, Maybe it came fro the Classic
Center. It is nice, and I really like it. It is in a 4 x 4 x 1
block of aluminum.

Re: [MBZ] Wheel bearings

2011-01-08 Thread Dieselhead
I have had success tightening the bearing until I can feel the
resistance to spinning the tire increase. Then I loosen it 1/3 turn
for general use, or 1/4 turn if I want it tight. I never had a .0001
dial indicator, so I can't tell you if it on the spec for sure. I
can say that it is tight enough the steering does not wander, and
loose enough so that the bearings don't overheat and burn out. I
have probably a cumulative million miles on MBs done this way. I
have never had a bearing failure. If the thread pitch is 1mm, 1/4
turnlosens the bearing and then you get maybe 1/8 mm of free play.
.040/8 would be .005, which is too much (by a factor of 10) by the
book. Perhaps most of the 1/4 turn relieves the stress on the
bearing and I end up with the correct .0006. This only way to check
for sure is to get a very accurate dial indicator and try to get a
reading. If you were doing serious track competition, it should be
measured. For my use, this works fine.

When you are out in the field it is not possible to check this by
the book so it is good to know there is a by feel method that
works.

Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu writes:

I found that even tightening the allen-head screw to lock the nut in
place changed the play by a few thousandths.

Err.. I mean a few ten-thousandths.

So what I had to to was get it just slightly too loose (something
closer to .001), then when I locked the nut in place it ended up
 being correct.

That having been said, I dug out the old Hamilton wind-up watch that my Dad
set aside when he bought an auto-wind Omega in the '60s, and wound it up two
days ago - with one wind the next day, it's still within a minute of correct
time. Not bad for a watch that has been sitting in drawers for 50 years or
so.

The secret to watch photos is broad, diffused light. I have a hemisphere of
about 15 diameter made of frosted plastic, with a port on one side that I
set over the watch, point an appropriate temp light at, and shoot away. It
makes nice photos of shiny things like watches.

Re: [MBZ] Buick straight eight (was More Holes)

2011-01-08 Thread Dieselhead
I love it! That would be a great car for just tooling around to the
grocery , church and hardware store.

A useful car for 5 k. Right in there with 123s, 124s, and 126s

All tyhis talk about the ventiports reminded me that I've always liked the
idea of the straight eight engines - long and powerfull image, etc. So I
went looking and found this speciman -

Made in my birth year no less. Luckily, my wife said NO.

[MBZ] Sorta OT -- Oatmeal Stout

2011-01-08 Thread Rich Thomas
I bottled some oatmeal stout today, it has been bubbling away for 2
weeks, finally decided it just needed to go in the bottles. It looks
like what I suck out of the Benzes when I change the oil. Smelled a lot
better though, I hope it tastes good!

Second time today I've heard about oatmeal stout. Interested to hear what
your impressions of it are later. I had a bottle of Dutchy Originals, Old
Ruby Ale, 1905 tonight, along with some Coombe Castle, Port Wine Cheddar.
Living pretty high. It will be back to Diet Coke and Doritos tomorrow. hee

I pulled out a bunch of stopper bottles, and had one I had sorta
forgotten about -- and Ipswich Brewery Oatmeal Stout bottle, not quite a
liter size but pretty big. Quite appropriate! Sounds like you had some
tasty brews, I bought a bunch of various 22s for Thanksgiving and
Christmas and we had quite a selection, that was fun tasting and sharing
a bunch of different brews.

My Scotch Ale should be ready to crack open next weekend, and I have
another batch to brew (an Oktoberfest) but need more bottles! I guess I
know what I need to do

I haven't taken any watch pictures. The non-professional pics

Photographing suggestions.

 * Don't use the flash. It will make the picture flat - and
probably cause glare. A bright windowsill on a cloudy day
   can work very well.

 * Make _sure_ the watch is in focus. If you can't get it to
focus when the camera is close enough to the watch to fill
the frame, try setting the camera for it's highest
resolution and then crop the picture so the only thing left
in the picture is the watch.

 * A tripod can be very helpful to avoid jiggles.

 * A black - or a white - background can be impressive, but
it's also tricky for the automatic meter. The meter will
do a better job if the background is the brightness of
medium gray. The color doesn't matter so long as the
brightess is the same as medium gray.

 * A background with color may confuse the auto-color circuit
and make the watch colors wrong - or maybe enhance them.
If you don't like the coloring of the final image,
   experiment with colored backgrounds.
