Re: [MBZ] W123 vacuum locking question

2011-02-23 Thread Dieselhead
Been a while since I was under the floormat of a 123 with a vacuum
pump, but if you pull up the driver side floormat, You should be able
to plug off the line going to the trunk until you get a new part.
The tool of choice is a golf tee.

On Tue, 22 Feb 2011 15:01:56 -0500 andrew strasfogel
astrasfo...@gmail.com wrote:

The vacuum locking system on the 1985 300CD leaks down in about 4 hours
 after locking the car.

Having trouble-shot the vacuum system on our '82 240D/3.0 over the
weekend, I have a fresh memory about the system -- I expect the coupe's
system to be similar to the sedan. Our leaks were so bad, the vacuum
system could barely shut off the engine.

Opening the master (driver's door) lock does not result in opening any
other door. (exception: when the vacuum is lost, the gas flap opens
 automatically).

That's how things are supposed to work -- the FUEL filler flap is
single-action, locking only. When it looses locking vacuum, the spring
included on the vacuum element pushes it to the open position. That way,
you will always be able to fill the tank.

I have not pinpointed the source of the leak but suspect it's the oldest
vacuum element in the car - the trunk lock servo.

That's the one that was leaking on our car -- BOTH the lock and the
unlock sides! They cost $62.

This morning, I opened the master lock and went back to the (still
locked) trunk to open it manually by inserting the key in the lock,
turning it clockwise and pushing in the button simultaneously. The
trunk sprung open as expected, but what I did NOT expect was that it
REMAINED unlocked afterwards even though the vacuum power had already
 dissipated. Can someone explain this?

Ummm ... counterclockwise?

The lock and the vacuum element both move a little flap into position or
out of position to transfer the inward motion of the button to the
unlocking mechanism. By opening the trunk with the key, you moved the
little flap into position and when you pushed on the button, it opened
the trunk. When you took out the key it was left in position because
using the key apparently moved the vacuum element's diaphragm, too.

To get to the trunk vacuum element, open the trunk and pry out the
plastic cover on the vertical portion of the inside of the trunk just to
the left of the lock. You will be able to see the locking (yellow/red)
and unlocking (yellow/green) Tecalan hard lines, two pieces of black
rubber tubing to connect the hard lines to the vacuum element, and the
vacuum element itself (ours is blue, like in
http://img.wpac.com/live/thumb/W01331624741VDO.JPG).

The vacuum element is held to the sheet metal by two self-threading
screws with 8 mm heads. Take the screws off and fish the element out
through the hole, twisting it in a vertical direction to disconnect its
arm from the arm that connects to the locks little flap.

Once you have it out and the hard lines disconnected (DO NOT bend them
too sharply, they will break), you can check it out with your MityVac.

Right now, pending receipt of the element from Rusty, the two pieces of
rubber hose for our car are pushed onto the legs of a galvanized fencing
staple to maintain vacuum-tightness for both the locking and unlocking
sections of our vacuum system.

Bad news mao, they crushed the 240D. They brought out four 190Es and
an E300, but those don't do either of us any good.

Sorry it didn't work out this time, I will keep an eye out if they get
another; this yard tends to turn over at least two rows every week,
though this was the first 123 I've seen in a few months.

Posting to list so if someone else finds one they know to speak up.

4kw charge rate? Must be 240v.

I'd like to know what sort of MPG you'd see if you drove it gently and never

Hey Craig, that was very helpful. The only part of this procedure I am
slightly wary of is disconnecting and then re-connecting the servo rod to
the locking mechanism:

...Take the screws off and fish the element out through the hole, twisting

Somese there is a crucial little clip that holds everything together and
likes to fall down into an impenetrable crevice. I hope that is NOT the
case with the trunk lock mechanism!

unlocking mechanism.

[MBZ] 240D vacuum troubleshooting

2011-02-23 Thread Curt Raymond
A couple weeks ago my '78 240D started not shutting down good. Today was
relatively warm so I figured it was time.

Turns out the passenger side rear door had broken the open line right where it
goes into the door. I managed to break the close line too. What a horrible
place to have a break. I ended up cutting long pieces of hose and running them
down to nearly where the hard lines turn at the floor inside. It was much too
hard to work with at the original break...

Anyway doors lock and unlock again and the car shuts down, a good day.

No, it is NOT the case with the trunk lock mechanism. I didn't take a
picture of it and it's hard to describe. When you open it up, look at it
carefully and I think you will see what I mean -- the vacuum element's
actuation rod is a piece of flat sheet metal the end of which is folded
in a tight U. This U piece slides over the flat arm that connects to the
lock's little flap.

No, you would have to block two lines off in the passenger's footwell and
then you would not have the fuel flap locking. The only way to block off
only the lines to the trunk's element is in the trunk, just like I did it.

The tool of choice is a golf tee.

I have two painted golf tees, and they leak when put in the end of the
rubber connectors (I tried). The galvanized fencing staple (like one with
which you secure barbed wire) seals well and is only one thing in there
instead of two.

Oh, and I forgot to add the procedure I wrote up in 2002 (with minor
corrections since) to my original posting:

Subject: Re: [DIESEL] vacuum line ID

X-Mailer: Sylpheed version 0.7.4 (GTK+ 1.2.10; i586-pc-linux-gnu)

 It is a W123

Like Larry said, you need a MityVac.

In the engine compartment, tapping off the vacuum pump to brake booster
line, you will have a single check valve (to permit air to flow toward the
vp-bb line and not the reverse). This will have a rubber cross connected
to its output. Check the check valve with your MityVac for one-way flow
only.

The brown line goes to the engine shutoff via the ignition switch.
The yellow/grey line goes to the vacuum reservoir in the trunk.
Check these two lines with your MityVac to see that they hold vacuum. It
will take a LOT of pumping to check the vacuum reservoir.

The yellow line goes to the master door vacuum switch. Take apart the
driver's door and remove the master switch from the door. Don't disconnect
the vacuum lines, but thread everything so they come out of the door below
the window. Remove from the master switch the rubber tubing connecting the
center (yellow) line to the master switch. Plug the end with a golf tee.
Go back to the engine compartment and check the yellow line with your
MityVac to see if it holds vacuum.

Back at the driver's door, connect your MityVac to the rear line on the
master switch. This is the locking line (probably yellow/red). If it
doesn't hold vacuum you have a locking circuit problem. Now, connect your
MityVac to the front line on the master switch. This is the unlocking line
(probably yellow/green). If it doesn't hold vacuum you have a unlocking
circuit problem.

The two locking/unlocking lines go from the master switch to the rear
outside part of the driver's footwell. Here they split into two. One pair
goes to the rear driver's side door element. Check both lines and see that
the button goes up and down. The other pair goes across the car to the
rear of the front passenger footwell. Here they split for the front
passenger's door element, the rear passenger's door element, and the fuel
flap/trunk elements. Check each in turn. The yellow/grey line for the
vacuum reservoir also goes through this area (it looks like there are
three lines going to the front passenger's door; the vacuum reservoir
line is the third).

The fuel flap element requires removing the right wheelwell insert in the
trunk. Once there, paritally loosen the ff element's mounting bolts and
slide it up to where the screws will pass through the enlarged holes.
Don't loose the spring or washer on the end of the actuation rod.

The trunk element is accessed by removing the plastic plate on the inside
of the trunk by the lock.

All of this is described in Group 80 of the chassis shop manual. SOMEWHERE
on Mickey's ftp site (ftp mickey1.dns2go.com, user mercedes, pass diesel)
I have see PDF files of the various sections of the shop manual, but I
couldn't find them last night. Maybe someone else (Mickey?) can tell you
where.

Hope that helps.

Re: [MBZ] W124 AT Shifting into Rev Problem

Well, I only have 18K miles on the present filter/fluid (total miles are 190K)
- I usually change at 30K so I guess that means tranny time? I assume it uses
enough Special Tools to make it difficult for the home mechanic to attempt?
I'd really rather not replace the AT at this time but I guess most would say
the same thing - Time to check with Rusty - I assume he offers a warranty?
I'll go to Rusty's website and browse -

Thanks for the help ---

I'd try changing the filter and fluid. If that doesn't fix it, call Rusty
and get a rebuilt one on the way, or Kaleb for a used one.

  Hello -
After working uneventfully for 4+ years, I shifed into reverse and it only
*slowly* engaged and started to move – especially once I gave it some gas.
It had never done this before – I checked the fluid level and it was a
little low – like 1/4” below the low mark – I topped it off and it only got
 slightly better.

 It’s a 91 300D W124.
Any ideas? Any vacuum lines that might be culprits?

 TIA -

Did you notice the under-dash assembly? It certainly doesn't look like
something someone wuld repair a single component in -- and it all goes into
the body in one piece. It also looked like the chassis with drivetrain is
seperate from the body - then mated as two parts. I'm guessing they are
welded together, not bolted, making the unibody chassis.

Don't place an order on my recommendation - wait till someone with BTDT
experience chimes in --
I've only had to deal with one dead tranny - in the SLC. The TC ground
itself into little pieces, and spread them throughout the tranny - no doubt
about that one.

Yeah, dish soap does a number on wax, dawn/palmolive would work,
likely anything that's tough on grease or etc.

I follow up with windex whenever I do a windshield, helps keep it nice
and streak free.

OK List Folk, is there someone here who does advocate waxing car
 windows?..

OK. There is nothing wrong with waxing all the glass except the windshield
 which would be foolish.
