Re: [MBZ] Change of plans: restoring Marlene Diederich... a new blog
Message: 7 Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2011 16:48:22 -0800 Hi Kevin, Yes, that is a deliberate alternate spelling of 'Marlene Diederich'. As I explain in the blog: A word about the name: I have owned the car for 12 years now, and I have never been able to successfully arrive at a name that really fits. If I was going to choose a name, which I have never done for any of my cars, I wanted something Germanic, something meaningful, and something... catchy. My wife likes the car, so I wanted to include her in the selection... and I suggested Diederich, a family name. She thought the name should be feminine, which I couldn't argue with having come up with several male names that just didn't make it. So a feminine name... to be combined with the Diederich family name Hmmm. What about Marlene, my wife asked? BINGO! Marlene Diederich it is!! :) http://mercedesdieselrebuildingdiederich.blogspot.com/ In the case of my no-show buyer... I had arranged my afternoon to accomodate him... I had spoken to him around 10 am Saturday, arranging for a 2:30 pm appointment... 4 1/2 hours away. He doesn't show up, pissing me off. No phone call, nothing. Then, about 24 hours later, on Sunday, a truck with three strange guys arrives in my driveway around 2pm. I am thinking what the hell is this? Well, it's my no show buyer. I told him the appointment was yesterday and he missed it, and that the car was no longer for sale. He blamed the confusion on his 'new medication' I am thinking it was his 'self-medication'. The whole experience was just kinda creepy... and I was left with the feeling that he wasn't so much interested in buying the car as he was in 'casing the joint.Good grief, who needs that? Re: [MBZ] compression testing
It depends on the tester and the adapter you are using. They have adapters for either the glow plug or injector holes. You dont want the engine to start so you have to have the fuel shut off by holding down the stop leaver while cranking. You usually use a remote start switch for this or have someone crank from inside car while you are holding the leaver and checking the readings on the guage. Re: [MBZ] compression testing
I just remember how I do 61x engines thru the glow plug hole. I remove the entire injector line assembly and keep the ports on the ip covered with a rag to keep fuel from shooting way up while cranking. The heat shields can be problematic to get out if they are stuck but usually turning over the engine will pop them out, watch it as sometimes they have quite the velocity. Engine should be warm and you should give it a full 8 cycles. I disagree with the statement about the quantity of fuel that comes out. It is certainly enough to spray high. The '78 slave is different than the '83 slave, as to why I couldn't say... They are not interchangeable, the holes won't line up to put the later slave on my car. As the question 2, no, in fact I have to squish the rod down a little to get the bolt to line up at the top of the pedal. Thats why I'd assumed the rod I have is too long, if it were shorter it seems to me the action part of the pedal would move down into the normal range. -Curt Date: Fri, 04 Mar 2011 14:20:00 -0500 From: MG trainpain2...@yahoo.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] '78 240D clutch rod Message-ID: 4d713b60.7000...@yahoo.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Curt, You finally said something that clicked with me. I've always wanted to do this ;) BZZZTTT! Wrong! The '78 uses a different slave, the bolt holes don't line up. I spent probably an hour under the car trying to make it work. '78 is indeed a 123, I think they started in '77 but its got some transitional elements, the throttle pedal actuates on the wrong side of the engine for instance... You're right that the later 123 clutch slave is the same as the 201 but the EARLY 123 uses the same as the 115 which is different. To see this in action go to Rusty's site and look up a '75 240D, a '78 240D (which shows both) and an '85 190D. -Curt Date: Fri, 04 Mar 2011 16:36:40 -0500 From: Rolf r...@winmutt.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] '78 240D clutch rod Message-ID: 4d715b68.6090...@winmutt.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed I have mixed and matched slave cylinders from all kinds of w123's with no ill effect. I will be interested to see what parts work. I know that the only master that I could use was the dealer - my labor (son) was not going to waste his time if I did not purchase dealer part - which worked. He had already wasted 6 hours trying to fit non dealer part. Problem was the cylinder bleed port could not be attained with cylinder mounted - perhaps it needed the shorter rod, I don't recall. And then, we did the slave. Again, I wasn't going to waste my labor time - my deal is I purchase dealer parts, or I do the labor. Even then, the dealer did not have the correct part, but the slave was easier to get to and without any removal labor, it was determined that the dealer part was wrong, so the car came off the lift. A call to Classic center arrived at proper part number and lower cost at dealer. The correct slave for me looks much like the '85 190D slave at Rusty site - i.e. mount holes appear offset from center of cylinder, whereas '78 mount holes are in line with center of cylinder. [MBZ] California Version - 1985 300TD
I have been looking for a 1985 300TD and checked one out today. However, it's the CA version 300TD with a catalytic converter and different air cleaner. The owner says that the transmission is also different than the normal 1985s, and that the car starts in 2nd gear. I was wondering whether I could swap out this engine with the 1985 300D engine in my wagon and mate it with that (normal) 1985 transmission without a lot of custom work. Good idea or not? Re: [MBZ] California Version - 1985 300TD
Whether it actually starts in 2nd or not may actually be a simple misunderstanding on the part of the PO. As far as I'm aware, all of the 722.3 transmissions used in later 123 and 126 models stay in second when stopped UNTIL you touch the accelerator, whereupon they instantly kick down to first. You should be able to feel this behaviour by taking your foot off the brake at standstill and see what the creep is like vs having the shift lever in L. And frankly, on most of them the modulator and transmission are worn enough that you can feel the bump when it kicks down to first. If it doesn't kick down, the cable probably just needs adjusting. It wouldn't surprise me that the PO wouldn't be aware of the above: I've met plenty of Mercedes mechanics who didn't know it either. Personally I love the earlier transmissions that start in second and do NOT kick down unless forced, because every time it doesn't shift is one less bit of wear on that band/clutch pack. As you know, the 85 has a higher stall speed on the torque convertor, so it should be even more capable of starting in second without seeming sluggish. And you could always kick down if you needed the extra kick... But as I said, I suspect this is probably just the PO not understanding that the design is for it to be in second to prevent creep, but then to kick down immediately when you apply the accelerator... The TDM will clarify what the normal build was for that year, but I don't have it with me to check. Andrew Strasfogel wrote: I have been looking for a 1985 300TD and checked one out today. The Albatross (240D) started exclusively in second, unless you either floored it or moved the shifter to L.
