Well, actually the NV4500 is fine. But I thought Dodge didn't
get those until late '90s - like the same time as the 24v
engine. Which means it's to new (read "expensive") for my
budget for beater farm truck duty.

I think I neglected to mention part of my motivation is my
2-door doesn't have enough passenger space, so 4-door is high on
the list of requirements. And I don't think Dodge made those
long enough ago.

Sounds like it would fit my needs fine. Now to find a 4-door,
4-wheel drive, 1-ton, single wheel under my price cap. GM 6.2
is also on the list.

Hmmm, that's going to be hard to spot on a driveway inspection,
isn't it? Even if I test the coolant and the necessary
additives are present that doesn't mean they have been there all
along.

Thanks for the report. :)

Of course, I want a diesel. I'd prefer a Cummins, but I'm not

So I'm looking further - but I don't know much about the Fords.
A '92 will be a non-turbo, right? I have heard the 7.3 turbo is
a pretty good engine. What about the normally aspirated?
What's to watch out for?

I'm after a sturdy work truck, not a high speed machine. I will
expect it to pull 7000 lbs of trailer - but I don't need it to
outrun my tired 240 when loaded. :)

So what's the word on these old engines? Trouble - or a good deal?

Re: [MBZ] Totalled car

2011-04-19 Thread Loren Faeth

Kaleb,

So glad to hear that Regina is ok. As someone else said, cars can be
replaced, people not. That said, it is really tough to lose a car
that is rare, or has been in the family for a long time. Like an
E430 or an 87 TD. It is luck that nobody else was in the car and
that Regina is unhurt.

Its a fact of life now that we are overrun with illegal aliens, and
other members of the 47% of the population that live off the 53% that
pay taxes. Few or none of the 47% have car insurance. That is why I
will not go without uninsured motorist, but ours is to cover the loss
of the car and medical, and is not that expensive compared to the
basic liability. It is a really unfortunate that in OK the uninsured
Motorist insurance is such a ripoff.

If whoever hit Regina is a citizen, then you should be able to find
out if they have a job. If so, the suggestion someone made about
small claims may be the best route to follow. When it gets to
garnishment, you may get some action, but most of the deadbeats will
quit work and then only work for cash after that. At least you might
recover part of the value of the car, assuming ins won't pay
anything. Bummer any way it goes down, it seems at this point.

When my daughter got broadsided in her SL, I was so glad she was in
an MB. IN a lesser car, she could have been killed, being hit on the
driver's side. When she got broadsided in my SDL, I was really
bummed about the car, but still very glad she was in a MB. When
Arleen got rear ended, again I was very glad she was in an MB. In
each of these cases, they walked away from what could have been a
very serious accident.

Best wishes to all of you.

BTW, Anna got the Idle air control yesterday. Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Mileage and windage

2011-04-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Yeah, you can be astonished sometimes. Makes you wonder just how bad
the milage is in those pickups where the hood is higher than a tall
man, eh? Gotta be terrible.

Back a million years ago, I drove up to pick up my sister at Purdue
in our old 1968 Ford wagon with a 240 six cylinder. Used less than a
quarter tank going up, more than 3/4 tank coming back, so I suspect
the milage difference was similar. 35 mph tailwind on the way up,
same wind the opposite direction on the way back.

PGA might sell you a used line for $50 or so. Last new one I bought
was $125. It PAYS to keep the plastic and metal holders for the
injector lines clamped down tight.

Last time I bought a set, it was maybe $350. Six or eight years
ago. Wish I'd kept the five used ones.

Ah, that makes sense. Bummer. On the up side it looks like this

For the very short term, I put in a stretchy 3/16" neoprene washer

it will bounce out of the compartment. :) I plays my games and I takes

[MBZ] Mileage and windage

2011-04-19 Thread OK Don
We drove the ML320 to DFW and back on Sunday. There was an
approximately 30mph wind from the South SouthWest all day. I filled the tank
before we left town, filled it just North of the airport on the way back,
and again as soon as we got back to town. I was driving with the cruise
control set to the speed limit, 70 most of the way, 60 the last 30-40 miles
or so (Texas is weird that way).

Going South, with the headwind, we got 20.3mpg. Coming home with a tailwind,
we got 26.3mpg.

The ML is not what you'd call aerodynamic, so I'm not surprised to see a
measurable difference, I just didn't expect it to be this dramatic. Almost
forgot, we had an extra 350 or so pouinds in the car on the return trip
(daughter and son-in-law plus baggage).

I've never measured/documented the wind effects on fuel economy before, so
thought this was cool.

Re: [MBZ] so much for installing new NSS

2011-04-19 Thread Dieselhead

Amen. Usually, I find the problem is the bushings in the shift rod.

you need to make sure the two "legs" of the actuator on the shift
lever are in the switch, then put it in neutral, loosen the screw on
the actuator, and adjust it so that the holes line up, then tighten
the screw. A drill bit of the proper size works well to get them
aligned.

Usually not a problem, but once in a while you get a switch that's
far enough off to prevent it from working with the old setting.

also make sure it's plugged in properly -- the lock ring has to be
completely released or the plug isn't seated.

Also, so the plastic bushings in the levers need to be replaced? A
sloppy shift rod from worn or missing bushings may not be moving the
switch correctly.

John Reames has a good writeup for 606 which has the same DV, that
marshall added to. I added my own notes. You can find it in
archives or I will send it directly if you want.

This afternoon (another warm day!) it got a lot worse all at once, and
just now I caught it in the act: one of the delivery valve holders (#3
from front) is spurting fuel. Seeing it reminded me that it was
repaired by the PO using silicon tape, and since it was working I'd
forgotten it.

Anyway I guess I'll take it off and see what I can see, hopefully it
will just be a simple adjustment in the cylinder and everyone will be
happy.

Thanks for all the help!

The first time I was at the fuel station, and it literally sounded
like a big truck started right next to me. At first I thought it was
just an echo, but then it went away. I guessed maybe it was the AC
compressor (first warm day, doesn't work anyhow), but I flipped the
climate control to EC after lunch and still heard it. Again heard
when I started out from work, and then when I picked the kids up from
school. Oddly, not at the Wal-Mart this afternoon, nor at the Sam's
 Club this evening.

Thus between the first occurrence and this evening, there were only
two starts where I did not hear the noise. I don't know how to
describe it except that the engine runs really loud - not a strange
sound, just an amplification of its usual sound - for a second or two
after startup, and it is obvious enough that I'm pretty sure I'd have
 noticed it before.
  - The oil pressure seems to come up as fast as usual, but maybe it
started leaking down for some reason? About 1K since last change,
that was the first change after the oil pan replacement. M1 15/50.
  - Might the starter not be disengaging? Is that really a failure
mode for a 603, and how would I be able to tell if that was it?
  - Could a fan/compressor/alternator clutch failure cause the engine
 to run louder?

By way of other clues, this was the first warm (mid-60s) day where I
made several short trips, and it was humid. Several of my stops were
on the order of minutes, and of course I noticed it at the same time
as the new fuel (and that from a new station).

Thanks for any ideas, recommendations, or suggestions to relax and
 embrace the louder clatta. :)

You have a couple of choices if the perp has insurance:

1.) You can let them provide the rental car, which will be something small and
inadequate, or;

2.) Some insurers will give you a per diem for a rental car. When my son's car
was totaled last year the insurance company gave me $25/day for a rental per
diem.

Ask up front.

You can self insure in OK - you just have to post the appropriate bond, etc.
indicting that you are financially capable of covering your liability should
you screw up and maim someone in there new Vette, Benz, whatever.
Insurance allows you to be financially responsible without have the actual
up front cash first. Your freedom ends where my nose begins, and that
includes your demonstrate4d ability to cover your risk when you engage in
risky behavior - driving on the public roads.

Re: [MBZ] Totalled car insurance

2011-04-19 Thread Hendrik & Fay

So what do you propose as an alternative to this "legalized scam"?
Operating a vehicle is a risky business because humans are not perfect
and make mistakes, thus the requirement for insurance.
I suppose it is the same in the US of A, insofar that those who have
assets, protect those assets with insurance, whilst those who live from
day to day, and have nothing, don't worry about covering themselves.
I have assets to protect and have to have insurance, it's only third
party property because my cars are not worth that much and I can afford
to buy another car if one gets written off but I cannot afford to pay
for someone else's car. That's a risk I take, in order to save a few
hundred dollars a year and if I do the math I am sure that I would have
saved the cost of the cars I have. It is a form of self insurance.
I am a fan of compulsory third party property insurance, which is not a
requirement in South Oz but is in some other Oz states. We do have
compulsory insurance for third party injury, which is part of a vehicles
registration (which may be a scam insofar that there is no choice of
insurer), however there are lots of people who drive without
registration or even licenses, so if you get hit by one of them you are
stuffed.

Anyway I am glad that Reggie is OK, I was a bit worried because she had
that drama with her neck when we visited, is she gonna get that checked out?

Insurance is legalized scam, pure and simple.
The objective is to provide a certain security in a place where you or
your property is harmed. Many times, it turns out insco end up to
help the perp more than you.
A true patriot would want freedom and deny the state's claim that all
drivers need insurance.
One further - the true patriot would claim the state has zero purview
to require a person to have a license - driving is a matter of
commerce. And the constitution - which I am reading does not cover
sovereigns anymore these days, thank you Barry - cannot limit the
exercise of commercial operations.
Liberty and freedom are things we assume - but things that have been
ripped from any grasp we may hope or wish we have. Liberty and
freedom do not exist.

1983 Mercedes 240D 4cyl diesel, Dark Green
Manual Transmission: 4spd
267,000 miles
In family since new

This is a good looking Mercedes, no wrecks, and has been in the family since
new so most likely I could answer any questions about the car. It needs a
couple of things, such as a front end alignment; just updated routine
maintenance that I have not had the time to perform. It is a second vehicle to
me and I don't need it so I'm looking for someone who can appreciate this car
and give it the time it deserves. Feel free to call, txt or email with any
questions. Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Do Chickens shriek?

2011-04-19 Thread Dieselhead
There should be a large square-nut/follower that rides on the long
threaded bolt. That is a split nut, and the nut should have a bolt
from the top eye of the alt through 1/2 of the split nut threaded
into the far side if the split nut. IF the split nut is flipped
over, the small bolt from the alt threads into the close side, and
there is NO clamping action.

In that case, it would do what you describe.

Normal tightening procedure is to loosen the clamp bolt, adjust the
tension, then tighten the clamp bolt.

Didn't you say that you just put this one back into service after a
long downtime? Are you sure that the tensioner is backing off or is
it the rust on the pulleys wearing the belts down and causing the
loosening?

It's coming loose, definitely. Belts aren't wearing.

Uh, the clamp bolt.

Usually, the rust keeps it locked solid.
Maybe try purple loctite?

What clamp bolt? This is the adjuster that sticks
out the side like it's making a right turn. Uses a
13mm wrench to adjust. No clamp bolt I can see,
it's supposed to have a tight enough friction fit
to stay put.

Which this one does not, and so it's now wearing a
lovely dab of blue locktite. We'll see how it goes.

Re: [MBZ] OM603/300SDL startup noise

2011-04-19 Thread Tim C
Okay, I need to break this down. I looked in the EPC but I have no
idea what I am seeing. I have never messed with an IP so I'd be happy
for pointers. :)

I pulled the DV cover open at work, scraped all the old silicon tape
out. The little metal ring that sits on top of the line is obviously
cracked; I assume that is supposed to be like a washer, pushing down
the cover of the fuel line, which then (correctly) sits in its little
cone in the DV. I don't see how I can get the fuel line apart to
replace the little washer.

To make the car work this evening, I put on some new silicon tape. I
also tried using one of my oil washers, but while it fit it didn't
seem to do anything useful, so I took it out lest it decompose into
the IP. Will pull out the silicon tape since it's not helping much,
if any; had to two-foot high idle it all the way home.

To make the car work tomorrow, what can I pick up today? Anything?
[Or is that, "go outside and fix the 300D"... :]

Will new o-rings and copper seals fix the fuel line leak? I thought
that was for below the DV. Or does that make it not run the fuel up?

Thanks,
-Tim

like a big truck started right next to me.

Re: [MBZ] so much for installing new NSS

2011-04-19 Thread Peter Frederick
you need to make sure the two "legs" of the actuator on the shift lever are in
the switch, then put it in neutral, loosen the screw on the actuator, and
adjust it so that the holes line up, then tighten the screw. A drill bit of
the proper size works well to get them aligned.

Usually not a problem, but once in a while you get a switch that's far enough
off to prevent it from working with the old setting.

also make sure it's plugged in properly -- the lock ring has to be completely
released or the plug isn't seated.

Also, so the plastic bushings in the levers need to be replaced? A sloppy
shift rod from worn or missing bushings may not be moving the switch correctly.

Re: [MBZ] Totalled car

2011-04-19 Thread Rich Thomas
If the car was not worth a lot, or the damage was less than$nk (where n
is like 3 or 5 depending on where you are) you can go to small claims
court, which a pretty minimal effort thing, and get a judgment. If the
defendant does not show up, you win. If the def does show up and you
win (likely) then the judge will tell the def to pay up or work out some
kind of plan. If the def fails to do that on schedule then you can get
them arrested for contempt, etc. and liens on stuff. At least that is
how it worked in Mass when I took some jackleg mechanic to SCC when he
screwed up a brake job on my truck back when ("forgot" to put in some
parts, cost me $400 to put them right plus what I had paid him). When a
deputy showed up with an arrest warrant at his house, and his wife
answered the door, that got HER attention which promptly got HIS
attention and monthly checks from HER. I'm sure it cost him more in the
long run ( heh heh) than it would have to just pay up.

Same story here.
Only one add point - check the entire bracket, as it was cracked in my
car and I drove it that way for a couple years before we took a good
look and found it was cracked, resulting in frequent loosening of any

Interesting... here uninsured/underinsured is a very small additional cost, so
cheap you'd be foolish not to have it. I'd drop collision before I dropped
uninsured if I were trying to pinch pennies.

N, OK is not a no-fault state; no, uninsured is not part of a standard
policy - it's an additional cost item, close to the same cost as standard
insurance. I do have it, as we've only had one case where the other party
had insurance, despite the law. However, I have a fraction of the number of
cars to cover that Kaleb has.

You should be able to include legal expenses as damages. I would say,
forget it if you have to "pay" a lawyer, some work on contingency but
maybe not for an uninsured case - at least that was our experience

Re: [MBZ] Totalled car

2011-04-19 Thread Allan Streib
If the other party have no insurance and you don't have uninsured/underinsured
coverage I'm not sure your insurance company will help you much as they are not
on the hook for anything. They only subrogate claims they have to pay to their
insured. Is OK a "no fault" state?

If you have to sue the other party it's unlikely you'll get any money. If they
had money they would have insurance. That they don't have insurance tells you
they think they have nothing to lose.

If they happened to be leasing the car you could in theory sue the lessor as
the owner of the vehicle. I'm not sure how that works in practice however. If
they were leasing the car they should have been required by the terms of the
lease to have insurance. The lessor probably has their own backup coverage
though.

If you have to hire a lawyer, forget it. You'll end up owing him more than
your losses.

Allan

Re: [MBZ] OM603/300SDL startup noise

2011-04-19 Thread Tim C
This afternoon (another warm day!) it got a lot worse all at once, and
just now I caught it in the act: one of the delivery valve holders (#3
from front) is spurting fuel. Seeing it reminded me that it was
repaired by the PO using silicon tape, and since it was working I'd
forgotten it.

Anyway I guess I'll take it off and see what I can see, hopefully it
will just be a simple adjustment in the cylinder and everyone will be
happy.

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks,
-Tim

Re: [MBZ] Totalled car

2011-04-19 Thread Tim C
My lesson, as I posted yesterday, came from this very forum: go
through your own insurance company. If you don't have rental you can
pay out of pocket, and the insco will subrogate and you might even get
reimbursed... though probably not going to get money from a stone.

Glad Regina's okay.

On the up side I hear Geico is a real bear if you're on the receiving
end, so maybe you should be happy the assailant dropped it.

Ditto! Can you buy the car back from the insurance co and maybe part
it out, or swap the engine into something else? 210s are old enough
by now that there's got to be some with bad engines out there for
cheap.

Yeah, it looks weird, doesn't it? I know I've seen SEC-style grills
for W124s that looked better-integrated than that, probably in the
Performance Products catalog. This one's probably some kind of

I'm definitely going to go take a look at this thing considering how
low the asking price is---if nothing else maybe I could sell the grill

Yep. He did say that the trim varied among cars, some was wide,
some was narrow. I'd learned on the Chevy that you had to put it
in first, and he did mention that he personally would not do trucks
like that. Unlike some of the guys in the biz, he would tackle the
gasketed cars. But it was apparent that it wasn't his first choice!
I, however, was not about to try to tell him his business. The only
reason I was there was to check out the state of the frame, which
was pristine.

On both my 240Ds to tighten the bolt I first have to loosen the (17mm I

It's coming loose, definitely. Belts aren't wearing.

What clamp bolt? This is the adjuster that sticks
out the side like it's making a right turn. Uses a
13mm wrench to adjust. No clamp bolt I can see,
it's supposed to have a tight enough friction fit
to stay put.

Which this one does not, and so it's now wearing a
lovely dab of blue locktite. We'll see how it goes.

I checked my records, and find that there was a spate of
spontaneous belt loosening three years ago, no mention of
boltery. From this, and the state of the exposed end of
the bolt, I suspect that the nut has been missing a _long_
time, perhaps since I got the car. (In 2002.)

Need a w'shield for 78 240D -- any suggestions?

You could do what we did. Call glass guy, he comes out
with a new one and manages to crack it after five hours
of trying to get it installed, and stomps off in disgust,
no charge. It's better than the one he replaced, anyway!

There are 3 bolts that have to be loosened.

Now I see what's going on! The 17mm nut on the top alternator
bolt is missing altogether. I put in one from the junk box
(w/lock washer) and tightened it. That oughta help, and it
certainly explains the suddenness of the problem.

So... bumper shocks... can I just pull a good-looking pair out of the
junkyard? Looks like a simple three-bolt assembly through the trunk,
I assume the bumper attachment is similar? What's the proper name, if
I should buy new?

Not sure you can, or would want to buy new ones. New SDL bumpers
are near-unobtanium by now, and were shockingly expensive the last
time SWMBA was rear-ended in ours. (Not our dime that time.)

Re: [MBZ] Wife rear-ended... continued...

2011-04-19 Thread Tim C
I do not have the wherewithal to make major modifications to SWMBO. :)
In 66% of her rear-end collisions this year she had stopped for
someone in front of her, so I can't really lay blame except maybe her
reactions are too abrupt. She claims to be okay, wouldn't go to
hospital or ob, and went on about her day after, so...

Looking the SDL over, there are two obvious bits of damage: a
quarter-sized gouge out of the driver's side rear bumper, and a clear
rotation in the bumper (those little shock things? are different sizes
now). From the scuffing it looks like the impact was mostly on the
left 3/4 of the bumper, which absorbed most of the energy by lifting
the back end of the car (or pushing the assailant under it, whichever
you prefer :). I am very glad she was in the SDL, it would have been
a lot of damage - and probably a more painful impact - in the
plastic-tastic Ford.

So... bumper shocks... can I just pull a good-looking pair out of the
junkyard? Looks like a simple three-bolt assembly through the trunk,
I assume the bumper attachment is similar? What's the proper name, if
I should buy new?

Thanks,
-Tim

What is this "go get" stufff? Jim seems to just look in the nearest pile and
find what will work, I don't think I ever read anything from him about "go

You are late again. After I got the cam right, the IP was 22 BTCD.
More than one tooth. Gotta go get a 7/16 bolt for the Catheyesque IP
lock, but before the weather gets decent again, the real deal will
probably show up from Mr. Q

Re: [MBZ] Do Chickens shriek?

2011-04-19 Thread Russ Williams

Jim,

There are 3 bolts that have to be loosened.
2 on the alt one top one bottom and one where the bracket mounts to the
block.
If you don't loosen them the adjusting bolt will bend DAMHIK. when you
get the Alt

adjusted tighten them back up. They are either 15 or 17 mm.

Didn't you say that you just put this one back into service after a

It's coming loose, definitely. Belts aren't wearing.

Uh, the clamp bolt.

Usually, the rust keeps it locked solid.
Maybe try purple loctite?

What clamp bolt? This is the adjuster that sticks
out the side like it's making a right turn. Uses a
13mm wrench to adjust. No clamp bolt I can see,
it's supposed to have a tight enough friction fit
to stay put.

Which this one does not, and so it's now wearing a
lovely dab of blue locktite. We'll see how it goes.
