[MBZ] Corvair and Globule warming

2011-12-02 Thread rogerhga
Guys,
I can only tell you my experience with TWO 1964 Corvairs. They ran great and
they did corner like they were on rails. I once took an Olds F85 small V8 off
the line at a redlight. I was a 4 spd manual and he was an automatic. I did not
experience any over steer or traction problems. Again, they would leak too much
oil. Mine ran great because I had a Chevy mechanic who told me how much I could
tweak the timing and points and not hurt anything. Really made the cars run
with a lot more power and better mileage as well. And yes I saw several wrecked
in junk yards when I was seeking parts (during college so I did most of my own
repairs), but then I saw a lot of equally smashed VW bugs and larger cars and
Ralph never attacked any of them. I always thought Ralph had a personal
vendetta against the Corvair and GM. And yes Fred, that 140hp turbo Monza was
something else! Just dreaming of the good ole days :-))

That is all fine and good if you live where you don't need traction.
Winter weather will send you spinning in a hurry with tires that hard.
On another note, what is the difference between US spec tires and the
rest of the world? Max pressure is usually 40psi on passenger tires here
but I see 50-65 max elsewhere.

Many people drive on tires that are over 10 years old and have never had an
incident. Some have also died doing the same thing.

Do you feel lucky?

One reason I put my loved ones in a Mercedes is to stack the odds in their
favor. I'm not going to undo that by trying to save $100 on tires.

Firestone used to have a production facility here in Cleveland a while back. I
knew the plant manager. He HAD to use Firestone tires on his car. He would only
put Michelin's on his wife's car. I admired his thinking.

Re: [MBZ] Corvair and Globule warming?

2011-12-02 Thread Rich Thomas

With the car or with the wife?

My auntie got a Corvair back in the late 60s or early 70s, used. I
remember it was a light metallic blue sort of color, with a blue
interior. It had this chrome kleenex box holder mounted on a swinging
arm under the glove box, it was really cool. You could reach down and
swing the holder out, grab a wipe, and when you hit it the spring would
swing it back in. Looking back, I really liked that car, both the
styling(it was the more rounded version) and the color. It might have
been the turbo, I vaguely remember my dad and uncles talking about it as
being sorta cool.

I had a buddy in high school who had an older one, clapped out in sorta
turd brown color in and out. He rigged up a hose from the dash to the
trunk, wherein he would stash a bottle of whiskey with the hose end in
it, and while driving around on a Sat night be able to take a little
toot off the whiskey. Very inventive. One morning we were all in
class, and heard all these fire trucks and such coming to the school.
So we go look out the window, his car was parked down the street a bit,
and see the firemen spraying the car, it was burning and belching
smoke. Turns out he had a left a roach smoldering in the ash tray, and
it flared up and burned the car up. This is your Corvair. This was
your Corvair on drugs. Somehow or other his parents discovered the
initiating event, and he was forced to ride the bus until he made enough
money (working at Mac's diner) to buy some other s--box, I think an old
clapped-out beetle.

I went to school with two brothers who had a whole stable of these that they
raced competitively.

Also had a retired teacher that lived next to me when I was growing up that had
a red one with almost no miles on it. People were always stopping to make her

My auntie got a Corvair back in the late 60s or early 70s, used. I remember
it was a light metallic blue sort of color, with a blue interior. It had
this chrome kleenex box holder mounted on a swinging arm under the glove box,
it was really cool. You could reach down and swing the holder out, grab a
wipe, and when you hit it the spring would swing it back in. Looking back, I
really liked that car, both the styling(it was the more rounded version) and
the color. It might have been the turbo, I vaguely remember my dad and
uncles talking about it as being sorta cool.

I had a buddy in high school who had an older one, clapped out in sorta turd
brown color in and out. He rigged up a hose from the dash to the trunk,
wherein he would stash a bottle of whiskey with the hose end in it, and while
driving around on a Sat night be able to take a little toot off the whiskey.
Very inventive. One morning we were all in class, and heard all these fire
trucks and such coming to the school. So we go look out the window, his car
was parked down the street a bit, and see the firemen spraying the car, it
was burning and belching smoke. Turns out he had a left a roach smoldering

Re: [MBZ] OT - Hydrogen as the fuel of the future?

2011-12-02 Thread Rich Thomas

Well, I guess there is still hope for me.

Back in the 70s when I looked at the hydrogen thing, I became aware of
the idea of Solar Power Satellites. Some of the hydrogen people had
soured on the Hydrogen Economy idea, mostly because of the economics of
it, secondarily on the technical aspects. I spent some time with some
of them, they had sorta exhausted the alternative energy funding for it,
someone pointed me to SPS. Very interesting idea, a lot of merits to
it, really the best way to do solar power. The concept has a lot of
merit, technically, economically, and environmentally, but not for
small-minded folks as it would require some bold action and thinking.
And require much less infrastructure disruption than hydrogen. It was
feasible back then, would be even more so today with the current
technological advancements though with Jimmah Cahtah we lost the mindset
to do big things in an Apollo-like manner.

I rang up the guy who was pushing the concept, one Peter Glaser, he was
out of town so I chatted up his secretary, she put me on to his
colleague Phil Chapman (who had been an Apollo astronaut), I ended up
working with them while I was finishing my thesis, then full time after
that (and met my wife there!). Phil was an Aussie, a pretty wild guy,
very smart (well, technically), he and I had a lot of fun together.
Peter had a very interesting background too, a Czech who fled the
jew-hating Nazis and commies and came to the US and did well. They were
both in some very interesting circles, Phil knew Arthur C. Clarke (and a
bunch of other sci-fi guys) pretty well, and introduced Peter to him and
they got along very well. One of those sci-fi guys came to Phil's (2nd
or 3rd, see technically smart above) wedding, I forget which one, but
I gave him a ride and we had a very interesting conversation.

I think one or more of these papers might have my name in amongst the
authors, I'll have to look at them sometime.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space-based_solar_power This is a pretty
good overview of the whole thing.

Here's some interesting news:

*Number of Americans acknowledging global warming rises -- poll *

An increasing number of Americans are once again embracing the idea that
there is global warming, according to a new survey released by the Pew
Research Center for the People the Press.

The survey, which the center has conducted annually since 2006, found 63
percent of respondents believe there is solid evidence of global warming,
marking the third year that figure has increased since it reached 57
percent in 2009.

But the percentage of respondents indicating their belief in global warming
still falls short of the 2006- to 2008-era surveys, which peaked at a high
of 77 percent.

The 2011 survey included 2,001 adults in a nationwide telephone poll
conducted Nov. 9-14.

The poll also found 38 percent of individuals thought that global warming
is a very serious problem, up from 32 percent in 2010, but still short of
the 45 percent who gave that answer in 2007.

The survey also reaffirmed deep divisions based on political affiliations,
with 77 percent of self-identified Democrats affirming evidence of global
warming and 43 percent of self-identified Republicans doing so. Sixty-three
percent of self-identified independent voters said global warming exists.

In addition, respondents split about the causes of global warming based on
their political affiliations, with 51 percent of Democrats blaming human
activity for global warming, while 19 percent of Republicans gave that
answer. Forty percent of independent voters identified human activity as
the cause of rising temperatures.

Did the poll ask, How much would YOU [i.e., not someone else like the
rich] be willing to pay each year [ or day, month] to alleviate what
you believe to be global warming? For such things like your electric
bill, your fuels, your manufactured goods, various taxes and fees, your
time, etc., or, say, as a fraction of your income or a total annual amount.

That would be interesting to know, and a lot more telling that a simple
I believe. Answering a phone poll question is nice and easy, but
putting your money behind it is the real test of one's commitment to
their opinion or belief; otherwise, it's just BS. I mean, we all
believe there should be no starving kids in the world, right? Or no
cancer. Or no whatever. And we would tell a phone poller that, but how
many people actually do much to alleviate it $-wise?

Rich,
You are looking at this issue too logically and with too much rationale. Global
warming is a personal issue like religion...some believe God is behind global
warming because we humans are inherently sinners while others think the Devil
is behind global warming just to scare us for fun. However, we all must
remember that there are lies, damn lies, then statistics / polls surveys.
And in the end it will be as the group Kansas said in their song all we are is
dust in the wind. Personally, I think it's the magnetic fields changing, but
then I could be wrong :-))

There is a sound deadening material that is sort of a gummy plasticy
sheet material with foil on the one side. Peel the paper on the one side
and stick it in place. Roll it down tight with a roller supplied along
with the product if I recall correctly.
Cannot recall exact name but my younger son literally covered as much of
the inside of the 98 F150 pickup cab as he could.
His effort was to improve the sound quality of his stereo. Not sure how
that was supposed to work given he had 2 amps under the seat and 2 huge
subwoofers behind the seat and tended to play god awful music.

It did make the truck quieter when the stereo was turned off.

We went to a highschool in Kenora called Beaver Brae.

There were then 2 highschools in Kenora and as a result quite a rivalry

Every fall there would be a football game between the schools and a pep

Janie and some friends painted the Beetle brown with flat water based

It was a Beaver. Looked really cute. They did a good job of it and it

[MBZ] More OT - HWT

2011-12-02 Thread Randy Bennell

How can you tell it is Friday afternoon?

I had a fun week. Monday about 6 PM we discovered our hot water tank had
sprung a leak. No flood as it is in the basement and on a concrete floor
about 2 feet from the sump pump pit.

However, it was leaking quite badly so it had to be fixed.
My wife and I went out Monday evening looking at new tanks but did not
get one. We went to 3 places. The first did not have the one I wanted in
stock. The 2nd did not appear to have what I wanted and by the time we
got to the 3rd place, they were more interested in closing than selling.
So, I went back Tuesday morning and got a tank and some of the other
odds and ends needed to swap.

We changed from a 40 US Gallon gas fired tank to a 60 Imp gallon
electric tank. The major reason to change was the idea that we will put
in a new efficient furnace in the near future and disposing of the gas
HWT will permit us to also remove the chimney (gas vent) so the house
should be tighter etc.

However that sort of thing comes with a cost. I had to cap off the gas
and the vent from the HWT to the main vent that the furnace uses. Just
replaced the pipe where it had been attached rather than patching it.
Since the new tank is physically larger - electric does not recycle
quite as fast so bigger is needed to maintain the hot water capacity -
the plumbing had to be moved etc.

These things are bulky and heavy so it is not an easy job to do. I got
the old one loose, the gas capped and the vent changed on Tuesday
afternoon as well as running out to get more supplies. My younger son
came by on his way home from work and we carried the old one out and the
new one in. Not easy to set into the hole behind the furnace as the
water meter and the laundry tub make for a small opening. Got it in
without hurting ourselves. Empty it weighs about 185# according to the
box. I figure at 61.5 imperial gallons it must weigh about 800# full of
water.

Wednesday, I worked on the plumbing. Changed over the water feed line as
the new one fills at the bottom and the old one filled from the top.
Also pulled the drain valve and installed a stub and a T etc and more
valves and a check valve as I intend to hook up a thermal siphon to
provide faster hot water in the 2nd floor bath. Also ran out to get
wire etc to feed from the panel over to the tank. That is another story
that I will touch on in a minute.

Did not get the plumbing finished until about 9:30 Wednesday night. Then
did the wiring and finally finished up about 11:30 Wednesday night. Let
me tell you I am more used to sitting in a chair all day than working
like this. I was dead tired and then stiff and sore yesterday. Today is
better.

The wire issue was something I stewed about for a bit. I have an oddball
panel in the house. GE. So, it is somewhat difficult to come up with
breakers. I had a spare set of 40 amp but not 25 or 30 which is what was
called for. I thought I might just up the wire to #8 instead of #10 but
that makes it much more difficult to work with. So after a bit of
mucking about, an idea dawned on me. I just used the # 10 and borrowed
the breakers for the AC as I will not need it in the near future. Long
before spring I can get another pair of breakers. Menards in Grand Forks
has them and I can get a set soon.

My wife wonders why I do things like this myself instead of just calling
someone in to do it. I might have done so if it meant just swapping a
similar tank as that would have been fast and easy. If I have to stand
there and watch the tradesman, I might as well be doing it. Besides, I
do a better job as I care about my house.

I wonder what her father thought of that. There are times when I am

Re: [MBZ] More OT - HWT

2011-12-02 Thread Rich Thomas
You can run a 30A breaker box off the main panel -- run it off the 40A
breaker you have (with #8 wire) then wire the WH right to the 30A-out in
the box. Don't know about where you live, but code here requires a
cutoff at the water heater electrical connection, so a small breaker box
would do that well (as would just a big throw switch, but since you have
the breaker issue...). The idea is that you can actually see the power
is off before you fool with the heater.

I had to replace my water heater right after I got hit by the truck
while riding my bike. The thing died Sat night, after my ride Sunday
morning I was going to Lowes to get a new one and put it in that
afternoon. So instead I come home hurting like hell, to take a cold
shower, ugh. I rested up the rest of the day and went and got the thing
Mon morning after the doctor visit (and another cold shower), still
hurting bad despite the drugs. Then the door in the closet was too
small for the new higher-insulated unit to fit, so I had to tear out the
door/framing to get a new door, reframe it all, put in the new door and
trim Ended up being a 2-day job, Not Fun but the nice hot shower
was very nice.

Re: [MBZ] bypass Chrysler servo?

2011-12-02 Thread Scott and Gwen Ritchey
The HVAC servo controls electrical, vacuum, and coolant flow functions. If
the coolant flow valve isn't stuck (e.g. it only leak) you can bypass the
servo coolant flow control and still use the servo for electrical and vacuum
functions. My '79TD came this way with a manual shut-off valve in the
coolant line. I lived in FL at the time so I left it off all the time but I
suppose the PO opened the hood and manually set the valve as needed. Also,
the older manual HVAC system used a manually operated valve (which may still
be available) that was controlled by a push-pull cable that ran into the
cabin. There is also a pricey (like $700) kit from Unwired Tools that
replaced the servo completely but you have to be really committed to the car
to spend that much.

There were some articles on the servo some years back so I loaded them up on
my site in case you want to read or download. Warning: the files are a
couple megs each. http://kittrellcommunitywatch.dyndns.org/servo

Many on this suite don't like George Murphy but he seems to be the expert on
these servos. Maybe this helps.

I want to temporarily bypass the removed servo in my W116 so I can have
some heat until I can either repair or replace it. I am planning to
just plumb the heater core directly to the circulating pump (should act
basically like the servo water valve is wide open) but do I need to
jumper any of the electrical or vacuum connections to get the fan to
run? Since defrost should be the failsafe I am thinking if I just plug
all the ports on the vacuum connector and select the Defrost pushbutton
on the console I should be able to get by with that?

valves and a check valve as I intend to hook up a thermal siphon to
provide faster hot water in the 2nd floor bath.
