Re: [MBZ] Selectric

The Selectric is still considered to be the best typewriter ever built

In one sense, and I like them a lot. I used to take 'em apart
in typing class when nobody was looking. Got a couple around
here myself. But they're pretty high-strung. Best in a
Ferrari sense, rather than a 240D sense, I'd say.

Everybody used to think they were electronic, and they're not.
There's a motor. If you wanted to bad enough you could run 'em
with a treadle and a belt.

2012-05-30 Thread Michael Canfield
Right.. 185mph is better than 1.85mpg. Lol

A good friend of mine is a Caddy nut, he had some that had names as long as
the car. Fleetwood Brougham De'Elegance or something close to that.
Another long time family friend has the DTS I think, it is ridiculous
fast. He ordered it special(he has that kind of money) and was a bit upset
that GM Special Performance Division couldn't build his with the 6 speed
manual.

Must be nice to be loadedhe has a garage full of 30's Victorias, all
perfect, most hot rodded. The floor is shiny, smooth tile to make wiping
up the drool easier. Amongst the Vic's are a couple sweet woody wagons and
an engine he offers up for sale, used, for 15 grand. It made one run in a
Vicky, he punched it, it stood straight up in the air in a wheelie and he
decided that was a bit hot for the street.

Gotta go see him sometime soon and drool over the toys.

I have a Selectric here too but it no longer works. I let it sit for a
couple of years and now it needs to be cleaned and lubed. Not sure it is
worth it.
However, I also have one of the IBM Actionwriters with the daisy wheel
instead of the ball. It works fine. Does not feel as solid as the
Selectric did but certainly does what I need a typewriter to do. Did not
pay a whole lot for it. $50 if I recall.

I think I paid a whole lot more for the Selectric - $300 maybe but that
was also almost 30 years ago.

The system was good enough to self police when we could enter real feedback.
Now, nobody gets spanked for being a jerk in a way that warns other buyers or

words you enter, not the numerical score that is impacted if you mess people up.

I sold a timing chain and tensioner to a stupid Aussie. He was all bent
about normal shipping cost, so I found a way to put it in a priority flat
rate envelope to get it there for ~$13 rather than ~$30. So, he starts
complaining right after I sent it because it didn't show up in 24 hours to
freakin OZ! Next thing I know he complained to fleabay and they refunded
his money with my money. No questions, but Bam! done, money gone, product
 gone. See ya. no appeal.

So the guy claims he never got it and the priority envelope has a tracking
number, but I find out the PO does not track it because it is international.
Can you say Screwed? Yup. Nice!

Prior OZ shipment went without a hitch, but no more international sales for
me, unless it is to Hendrik. At least there are two honest Aussies for one

[MBZ] New G-Wagen

Took a trip with my daughter in her GL320cdi and by the time we got
to our destination the car was riding very rough over bumps and bouncing
up and down like it had no shocks. Daughter said she could smell something
running hot. The dealer said he could see the front
end setting low, about a foot off the pavement, so he gave us a loaner and
kept
the car. About the same time on the trip, the air conditioner started
working

the

hydraulic suspension pump and the A/C pump and a bearing was hanging or
the belt was going bad. It has about 150K miles.
While waiting for the loaner car, looked at a new G wagen. Big ugly, boxy

Yes. For proper playback, the total number of bits needs to be downloaded
to your computer. Buffering allows the downloading to get ahead of the
playback in case the rate of downloading should later drop. If it doesn't
recover in time, you get choppy playback.

Re: [MBZ] Jeep oil filter adapter o-rings fixed! (was TORX allens)

2012-05-30 Thread Brian Toscano
I changed out the o-rings on the oil filter adapter of my Jeep tonight.
The dealer keeps these in stock, so they are probably a common repair item.

Over the years Jeep has used a hex head bolt, a 9/16 allen bolt, and a
T-60 bolt. Mine had the T-60 head so I bought a Duralast socket at
AutoZone for $4.99. There is limited space between the bolt and the frame
rail, so using a standard ratchet or breaker bar is not possible. A 12mm
box end wrench fits well over the T-60 bit. However, there was too much
deflection in the wrenches and that T-60 bolt wasn't budging.

I ended up putting removing the bolt from underneath the engine with a
piece of flat steel about 24x1 that had a 3/8 square drive on the end.
 There was just enough room.

I was surprised to find out that only 2 out of the 3 o-rings installed on
the adapter/bolt. The one missing was a big o-ring on the center bolt that
I would like to believe it was never installed at the factory rather than
think its somewhere inside the engine! The smaller o-ring appeared fine,
and the o-ring that goes between the block and the mount itself was
flattened and hard.

I put it all back together with a new filter.

I have always thought allen was synonymous with hex - but

Yes, Allen is a tradename for internal hex just as kleenex is a
tradename, but is used as generic for snotrag. Allen has been used as
 generic for internal hex.

Phillips is a specific design of cross-slotted screwdriver, but the name
of the design is unknown. It is simply a phillips screw or screwdriver.

Torx is also a tradename that has come to be used as a generic.

Re: [MBZ] New G-Wagen

2012-05-30 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
Hey there now, my mom drives one of those things and she ain't no rapper
gangsta or soccer mom:) I think it has great looks but agree that they should
have kept it a bit simpler and more utilitarian. I drive it quite often and
must say that it has incredible build quality that puts a smile on my face
every time. Nothing in the current Mercedes line-up comes close but then again
I have very cynical views towards modern cars.

end setting low, about a foot off the pavement, so he gave us a loaner and kept
the car. About the same time on the trip, the air conditioner started working
intermitently. All I could think of was that a serpentine belt drives both the
hydraulic suspension pump and the A/C pump and a bearing was hanging or
the belt was going bad. It has about 150K miles.
While waiting for the loaner car, looked at a new G wagen. Big ugly, boxy
thing that looked like a cross between a Jeep Wagoneer and a Hummer.
Coming home the loaner car was a C300 that didn't ride as good as my '83
300D.

Re: [MBZ] Electric oil pumps etc.

2012-05-30 Thread RELNGSON
...An electric oil pump?! Amazing. I guess they are pretty convinced of
 its
 reliability...

The days of direct drive AC compressors, oil pumps, water pumps and
open/closed thermostats are disappearing. I don't know what BMW and Audi are
doing
but Porsche and MB are adopting this technology because it reduces power
requirements and thus improves fuel economy.

Engines simply don't need full oil pressure all the time but just maintain
enough for cooling bearings and maintaining the oil cushion and it varies a
lot. Engine driven cooling fans are no more because a variable speed
electric fan does it better and thermostats are variable to better maintain
engine
temps along with the fan speeds because of emission requirements. AC
compressors don't have clutches any more because swash plate designs allow
refrigerant pumping as needed instead of the all or nothing designs of the
past.

My M272 powered C300 uses a swash plate compressor so the sag in power is
never felt because the plate angles vary depending on cooling needs. Same for
the engine thermostat. And, the big electric fan behind the radiator is
never heard if the windows are closed and then only on high speed.

So far at 4 1/2 years none of these components has so much as hiccuped.

No, but its a pain to have to change a timing belt every 100,000 miles for
