Are you saying you found engines on car part and tried to email them and no
response? Most of those salvages do not do a good job with email so you have to
call them. Who cares about mileage at this point on those cars, a compression
test would be much more important and informative

lookups, but phone and fax is how they work with customers. I'm gussing
that since their email address is out on car-part.com and other sites,
90% of their email is spam. What isn't spam is from people who want to
play a 20 questions game. So it's just not worth their time.

Very often you will get mailbox is full bounces when emailing salvage

2012-08-11 Thread John Freer
Oh yeah! There are two troublesome systems in the R129's. The SRS
system is prone to failure and the ECU can cost 1500.00 plus labor.
Can't operate the car if a failure occurs due to the seatbelts
tightening up and air bags, roll bar, etc will be non functioning.
Early on sophisticated electronics that were not ready for prime time.
Labor is extensive as the seats have to be taken apart to get to the
seatbelts, etc

Hydraulics for the tops include 11 rams which can run 5,000.00 if they
need to be replaced. Non use is one big cause of failure and the other
is leaking rams. I was looking at a 1997 SL320 and during the test
drive, the salesman in the passenger seat had oil dripping down from
the front pillar onto his fancy suit pants! I passed on this one as
the SRS light came on as we drove and the seatbelts tightened up which
was mighty uncomfortable!

[MBZ] Engine Additives

2012-08-11 Thread Jerry Herrman
I have a number of old cans of engine additives that I may never use. Does
anybody know what is in these cans? They do not list ingredients, except to say
petroleum distillates. If you swallow it, call a doctor, and do not induce
vomiting.
This one is called Therm-o-Lube ring and valve free conditioner for top engine
performance. Not sure if the top refers to the part of the engine, or to the
performance. The manufacturer is 1963 Thermolube, Inc. It could be from that
year.
It promises, among other things, the following:
- reduces friction to a minimum
- removes carbon and sludge
- more mileage
- frees hydraulic lifters and piston rings

Curiously, it does not say it is flammable.
Might this just be a detergent? Would it be useful in an older engine? Might it
have any other uses today (killing weeds, wood preserver, termite preventer,
etc.)? I ask because I need to dispose of clutter and I have a tendency to not
dispose of things that I might need some day.

[MBZ] BuckyBalls in your oil

2012-08-11 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Listers:

I have been doing some reading lately about nanotechnology, and have come
across some seemingly reliable comments about lubricants consisting of a
lightweight synthetic carrier and fullerenes (C60 specifically) that
apparently work very well as a clock and watch lubricant. Some of the
favorable reviews come from established members of horology forums (fora?).
I also see that some companies are selling kits intended for use in
automotive and other engines. Some of the automotive additives seem to rely
on nano particles other than fullerenes.

I have ordered a minuscule amount of the C60 based oil to try out on guns,
an old clock, small motor bearings and bushings and such. I am not likely
to dump any of this stuff into my crankcase until I am convinced that it
will do only good and certainly no harm! I am curious to hear if any of
you out there have any knowledge or experience with these lubricants or
other products using fullerene or quasicrystal technologies.

For those who aren't familiar with fullerenes or C60:

C60 is one of the many allotropes of carbon, such as graphite and diamond.
C60 is a soccer-ball shaped molecule consisting (duh!) of 60 carbon atoms
forming 20 hexagonal and 12 pentagonal facets. Each carbon atom has 4

I have had mixed success with car-part. They had dozens of the part I
needed for my f100, and very knowledgeable people answered the phone at the
two or three places I called. Shipping was fair and it was done in 10
minutes.

When I've tried to order parts for Mercedes I usually end up with we don't
carry parts that old, I don't care what the inventory says or answers to
questions that are completely incorrect, if the part is what they claim.
(I have been told there are not supposed to be electrical contacts on a
Mercedes alternator, for example.) I have also shown up at a yard and had
them break a part trying to get it off, received obviously broken parts,
and so on.

I get that Mercedes are relatively rare vehicles so I don't expect random
junk yards to know them like Kaleb, but it does seem like there is a clear
difference shopping for parts for a 77 300D versus a 72 F100, and I don't
really understand why. I don't think they are trying to scam me but they
seem less likely to go out of their way to do any actual work for me.
(Maybe Mercedes drivers have the reputation for being tight wads? :)

Anyway, I'm glad that Glenn got exactly what he wanted, will have a
warranty for a few years as he breaks the engine in, and will hopefully be
able to drive his TD another few hundred kmi before giving it up. I'm
looking forward to getting stuck behind him one day when I'm cruising the
Blue Ridge Parkway in my solar-powered, fuel celled, flying Kia in the late
2030s. :)

Re: [MBZ] BuckyBalls in your oil

2012-08-11 Thread Peter Frederick
It's not going to hurt anything, they are very tiny spherical
molecules with a metal atom in them. Sometimes called nano-diamond,
which implies that they are abrasive when they are not.

They coat metal parts, sort of filling in the voids in the surface
texture with VERY slippery molecules.

The only drawback is that they wont' necessarily stay put, so it's
just like the teflon additives in the late 70's. Worked great while
they were in there, but they left with the oil when you changed it,
and the added cost (a couple bucks a quart in the 80's) wasn't worth
the small gain in performance and wear resistance.

I've heard good things about nano-diamond lubricants for watches, but
have not yet tried any, as my current skills at watchmaking are
minimal enough it would be VERY hard to tell if the oil made any
difference. In the case of watches and similar equipment, the problem
with loss with oil change is much less, as if they do their job and
stay put, the oil can evaporate and the parts will be well lubricated
by the Buckyballs alone, so it won't be necessary to service the watch.

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300CD Klima relay - where is it?

2012-08-11 Thread Peter Frederick

Two things to check.

First is that there is suction past the interior temp sensor (in the
dash, I think). If not, the foam hose under the dash between the
plastic pipe and the fan box has fallen apart and you are getting zero
air movement past the sensor from the fan, resulting wide variations
in temp control as random air movement changes the temp.

The second thing that does this is a broken wire or a defective temp
sensor. They are thermistors, so open or shorted is a problem,
otherwise they should read some resistance at room temp and change
with heat or cold.

Typically on a W123 the foam hose has fallen apart. Replace it with
some heater hose.

What's odd is that the ACC seems to be hunting wile operating,
clicking the compressor on and off and cycling hot and cold air.
Could this be the klima relay? The par number is 001-545-74-05. I
have two 1985 turbodiesels so could swap one out to test but I looked
under the hood and didn't see it. Where is it located?

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300CD Klima relay - where is it?

2012-08-11 Thread Dan Penoff
Yup.

If the foam bypass tube has deteriorated (broken down to dust and now missing)
between the air box and the thermistor in the dash, a piece of 1/2 black foam
pipe insulation will replace it perfectly and you'll even have enough left over
to use in another 20 years.

The easiest way to see is by taking out the glove box and looking up at the
bottom of the dash pad. You can also use the tissue test, which entails the
use of a small square of tissue that you place over the grille that covers the
thermistor in the dash while the system is running. There should be a very
tiny bit of resistance when you remove the tissue caused by the air being drawn
in through the grille. This works especially well in 124 chassis cars that
have the little helper blower at the base of the passenger side A pillar. The
124 grille is on the ceiling in the cluster of stuff containing the map lights
and sunroof switches.

Classic symptoms of a deteriorated foam tube under the dash, which can be
replaced with similar tube from hardware store.

[MBZ] 1984 300D fuel injector operation

2012-08-11 Thread Mike Esh
Does anyone have a drawing, diagram, or schematic of the fuel flow from the
tank through the injection pump and back? I removed all lines and hoses trying
to find an air leak and now I cannot get fuel to pump by cranking or with the
hand pump. I thought I had it labeled pretty well when i pulled things apart,
however I have tried so many combinations that now I am totally confused. Any
help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike in Michigan
