Re: [MBZ] Engine Vacuum Couple Hose hookup 240D

2012-11-21 Thread RDeafBoy
I drove to my buddy's garage 30 miles away to stay overnite so that I could
adjust my valves on a cold engine. I have a '83 240d. When I went to hook
up the black vacuum plug, all the 5 nipples broke apart. I then had to pull
the hoses out the plug to directly connect them to the vacuum lever units
just so I could get home. I got a new black plastic engine vacuum couple
that goes on the top the valve cover. It still doesn't shift right.
Could someone forward me a picture of the correct vacuum hose setup
that enters into the black rubber plug? There are 5 hose connections on the
exterior side.[ 6 on the inside ].Again this is for a 240D setup. You could
send the pic offlist if you want.
Thanks for your help. And Happy Thanksgiving
everybody.

the road. He took out 3 of them but had the sense to throw himself down on
the seat so he did not get hurt. Try that today with bucket seats and
consoles and shoulder belts etc. Back then the car had a bench seat and no

Thanks.

Found the problem. It was barely noticeable inside the woven cable
bundle that comes out of the trunk lid. A rough spot, with the
woven cover pulled away some. I decided to investigate, and when I
cut and pulled the woven jacket away, there were 5 wires. 3 cut in
two. 2 with damage to the insulation. After repair, all the lights
work. The jacket was not damaged.

I did not find it until I crawled into the trunk and felt along the
wire bundle.

So, the grounding points are ok. Just a cut wire, but hard to find.

2012-11-21 Thread Rich Thomas
I have related this story in the past, which I remember from being a
teenager. We were visiting my mother's friend who was a nurse, and
related the story that she was driving to work one morning at like 5AM
in her VW bug. Comes around a curve and there is a mule in the road,
which she hits and proceeds on a bit until stopped. She gets out to see
what had happened, the mule had rolled up and over the bug and landed
back on its feet, was sorta shaking off the experience and ambled off.
The bug was undamaged other than some mule hair. She was rattled but
given the animal and the car were OK proceeded on to work.

This story made an awesome impression on me.

[MBZ] OM 603 head gasket

2012-11-21 Thread Dieselhead

Special message to Max and anyone else who has recently BTDT:

Looks like I get to change my first OM 603 head gasket. SDL has oil
smoke, and oil running out the exhaust. Turbo compressed air outlet
to the crossover pipe is clean as a whistle, so no turbo failure.

So, I need the obvious:
head gasket kit
head bolts (or carefully measure stretch)
valve seals
turbo seal kit if not included in the head set (orings for drain,
gasket for supply)

Injector nozzle heat shields (if not in head kit)
Hose and a plastic bag to seal up nozzle holders and DV unions in
lieu of a dozen capplugs of the right size.

Things that I probably don't need as they are recent:
valve cover gasket
injector line clips
Timing chain and guides

Things I may need:
17 head or 22 head (have one in Boston. Just need to get it west)

Anything I am missing on these three lists?

Any special tools needed aside from the special socket for the head bolts?

I may be taking the head off Fri or Sat. I won't get it back on
until Christmas time.

[MBZ] Fuul price WAS:124 license light problem

2012-11-21 Thread Dieselhead
Guzzlene was 3.29 when I left home on Sun. As I drove South, the
price went down. First fill ~40 miles from home was 3.08. Most
prices for the next 900 miles were 3.03 to 3.09 with a few 3.17.
South of Jackson, MS the prices went up again to 3.14 to 3.17.

I saw Dissel fuul for 3.65 to 3.99 No real pattern to those prices
in relation to Guzzeline.

When crude was in this range and GW was prez, gasoline was a buck
cheaper. Try to tell me fat georgie Sore ass is not raking in those
bucks while he breaks the country? 'Course GW was catering to his

Depending on how it goes, you might need the ball bearing thrust washer pin
puller for the chain guides. Might not since you indicate that you've
replaced them recently. I found that my usual bolt, stack of washers and a
socket did not work on the 603 head. New valve guides might be needed as
well ---
Be carefull pulling it all out if you leave the turbo attached to the head
as you pull it out - the turbo oil supply line likes to get catch and bend
in strange ways that make it a challenge to re-assemble. BTDT.

Good luck!

Not to sound like a broken record but when they do the alignment the first
thing that should be done is to check for proper ride height. Alignment
cannot be done correctly if the ride height is not right. How many 30 year
old cars still sit at the proper height?

There is no way to adjust the rear. If it is eating tires on the inside on
the rear there is either loose parts or sagged springs.

they attach to the subframe. Diff mount, unless that was recently
done. I used a 3/16 drill to drill out the rubber on the control arm
bushings so they can be pushed out with a c clamp. Your son may have
access to a press to press them out. There is more than one way to
get them out. New ones press in with Dawn lube. Same lube for
subframe bushings. On my 240D, removing the subframe bushing bolts
took a 6' cheater and all my strength with my feet against a 12 x 12
that was holding up the rear of the car.

Use a lot of caution to have big blocks or cribbing under the car.
An old fashioned 2 arm air bumper jack would be a good thing to have
under the back bumper as a safety.

Rusty has available eccentric rear control arm bushings. I used
them. It was not too much correction. So I think that is worthwhile.

Not terribly hard other than the subframe bushing bolts. Use
neverseez on the subframe bushing bolts and the control arm bolts if
you choose to. (careful to keep the neverseez off the rubber.)

I have not seen saggy springs on MBs newer than 1962. K'lebs paper
delivery TD may be an exception. Gross overloading could ruin
springs. Anecdotal evidence says that sometimes the springs are too
short. (sprung)

Front, I have not had to mess with ...yet. Other than ball joints,
tie rod ends, center link and idler bushings. But I have not had to
change front subframe bushings on anything.

126 107, 108 etc have the same rear end problems. I never fixed the
first SDL until I put new bushings un the control arms and subframe
mounts.

As others have said: get the ride height right first. The rear
subframe/diff mount and control arm bushings are the way to do this
in the rear. If the front is out of adjustment, then similar may be
in order.

One other thing that most people neglect: Shocks. Many people get
sold shocks from snears or other garbage. (mon-row) The ride height,
and suspension geometry will not be right without the proper upward
force from the shocks. If the bilsteins are dead, replace them
before alignment. If the shock are not the proper pressurized
shocks, dump them and get bilsteins, even if they are used.

The 'mercuns have lernt, since most of the deetriot iron now uses
similar suspension to MBs of 25-30 years ago. So snears and mon-row
will sell you mcPherson strut cartridges and even gas pressure
shocks. My experience with these are that they are not worth the
money. Best to use OEM shocks on MBs, Yeah, I know, it gets pricey
for an old car.

I bought used bilsteins for the car I put your engine in.

Brought that along this trip. I figured this head is longer and more
awkward, and depending on how much hardware I leave hang on
it...could be heavier than a 4 cyl iron head. (621/615/616)
Therefore, an engine hoist might be prudent for lifting the head.

BTDT.

Good luck!

I have managed so far with sockets and washers etc.

I am not sure how much i will leave in the car and what I will leave
on the head. I'm thinking the turbo may be best to leave hang on the
exhaust pipe. But I can remove the drain tube and supply tube first.

Re: [MBZ] OM 603 head gasket

2012-11-21 Thread Peter Frederick

Some notes from my head gasket job a couple years back:

Make absolutely sure that oil supply pipe is free of the block when
you attempt to remove the head, mine leaked after straightening it
back out, never did get fixed (car was wrecked soon after).

You need all new head bolts, if you re-use them they always fail to
keep the gasket sealed. Gas engines are fine, the diesel is not.

Absolutely check the valve guides, they are a known weak point. Easy
to fix. Make absolutely POSITIVE that the machine shop installs them
to factory specs (very little clearance) -- it's common around here to
want them very sloppy for some reason. I got a rebuilt head with at
least 0.010 side clearance, had to have the job redone before we
could use the head (and new valve seats to boot).

For just a gasket change, leave the injectors in, don't clean the
pistons, and don't clean the head except in the seal area. Knocks
like crazy for a couple days if you shine it all up. If you need to
check for cracks, clean it, otherwise leave the carbon on.

You can leave the turbo and exhaust manifold in place, much easier.
However, you should also check the turbo for condition -- if there is
ANY front to back play or roughness in rotation, the bearings are
shot. It' not impossible for the front seal to be OK and the rear to
leak, the damage is usually done by coked oil on the main shaft and it
can eat out the rear seal first.

Good luck -- your car will run MUCH better after you put the new
gasket in. I need one as well, but it will have to wait until I get
the suspension fixed, I'm out of free cash.

Thanks.
About carbon and cracks: My experience is that the cracks show up in
the carbon- IF you can keep it dry. So, I like to inspect the head
with all the carbon in place. Keeping it dry is the hard part.
Knowing where to look for cracks is also a good thing to know. Aside
from the prechamber to the valves, as in the iron heads, I am not
sure where else cracks on the aluminum heads.
