Both the large and not-so-large wires at the starter can cause a no-charge,
no-lights condition.

The battery feed to the large terminal is normally a hefty black cable. The
less-hefty but still substantial red wire goes back into the loom, feeding the
entire vehicle, including the ignition switch, charge circuit, etc, etc.

On later W123 models from MY1982 and later there's a terminal strip on the
inner fender. Presumably the W201 has a similar connector. A problem there
would also cause a similar failure condition.

[MBZ] OT - computer question

2012-12-17 Thread Randy Bennell

I bought a Canon camcorder.
I have down loaded the manual in pdf form.

I would like to print the manual.
It wants to give it to me in a booklet size of about 2.5 X 3.5 which is
pretty small fo rmy old eyes.

Is there some way to make it print larger?

So far, I have failed to figure out how.

In Acrobat Reader there is an option in the print screen to fit to page or

Hit Print then look around on the Print Preview page that opens.

Yes, it will print both sides. Prints the one side and then pulls the
paper back in and prints the other side.
Works pretty good. My previous machien was supposed to do it but would
more often jamb than work. This one rarely has issues so they must have
resolved whatever caused the issues.

2012-12-17 Thread Peter Frederick
Clutch only requires a offset snap ring pliers and some means to hold
the clutch plate while you unscrew the retaining nut. Plate comes off
the front, clutch coil is held in by the snap ring. The seal stays
put, that's another snap ring deep inside and if you leave that alone
the clutch can be replaced with the system charged. The bearing can
be replaced as well, although it may be nearly impossible to drive it
off the housing with the compressor in place.

Do not lose the thick washer under the plate, it's necessary to get
enough space between the clutch plate and pulley. There are not
enough shims in the kit to make up for it, BTDT.

[MBZ] Inspecting for Rust and other questions for 85 123 Estate (five cylinder 240D)

2012-12-17 Thread Jerry Herrman
Well, Craig, thanks for clearing that up. I learn something new everyday. My
goodness, what an undertaking. I figgered there was a reason no one else asked
about this. It also answers the question of where do 300D's with manual
transmissions come from - some of them anyway.

I was fortunate to have a wrecking yard about a mile-and-a-half from our
house in Austin that had an imported European 123.130 (the exact same
type of car I was trying to make, but this one was that way from the
factory) in its stock. I got a number of parts from that car including the
transmission, driveshaft, pedal hangers, and maybe the correct OM617
manual transmission flywheel (though they could have had that in the
shop). It was in the yard because its #1 piston had come out the side of
the block. Coincidentally (or maybe not), the #1 port on the head into the
exhaust manifold was very carboned up.
