Re: [MBZ] OT - Water Softener Resin

2013-11-26 Thread MG
changes calcium with sodium so you end up with salt in the water.
How bad that is depends on how hard your water is and how much
salt you use on your food anyway as well as how much water you
drink. In combination with a reverse osmosis filter for drinking
which will take out the salt, it isn't too bad.

Doesn't a water softener just replace one set of dissolved
minerals for

another? Are they really good to use?

Sorry, I have no idea about yours--

Re: [MBZ] OT - Water Softener Resin

2013-11-26 Thread MG
first thing to do is to find out if it works like it should. Look
and see if there is water in the brine tank first. The amount of
water depends on how hard your water is. No water then it's a
control valve or timer problem or the hose between the valve and
the brine tank. If there is water in there then you need to
trigger the regeneration sequence and see if the whole sequence
runs like it should. Backfush first then brine water sucked out
of the salt tank and put into the softener. Then a long pause.
then a fast and a slow flush and then the replacement of the
water in the brine tank. if all that is working as it should then
the problem might be your resin. If you have a high iron
concentration you might try an iron cleaner to see if that will
bring the resin back. If that doesn't work then new resin. If
after you tried to start the regeneration sequence it just sits
there and doesn't do anything other then backflush then you may
have a timer out. If you try to start the regen sequence and the
valve motor doesn't change the valve but the timer moves wheel to
the different positions then the valve motor is bad or one of the
little micro switches needs to be replaced.

That's if you have an electrically operated softener. If it's a
Kinetico or other with a water powered valve system then there
are other problems that I won't go into but you will probably
have to get a Kinetico service guy to do the job as parts are
probably not available.

Our water softener is not working well.
Perhaps new resin is needed?
Is that remove and replace or is there more?
Someone online mentioned probably not resin but control valve - does
anyone know this?
Thanks.

Subject: [MBZ] Hood Stars and Ice

While driving to church Sunday morning, I noticed that the hood star on
our 1982 240D/3.0 was crooked. When we got to church, I got out and tried
to straighten it. Eventhough it had snowed and was in the mid-20s, I did
not think of ice. When I tried to move it, the star broke off in my hand.

So, Kaleb, do you have a W123 hood star? If so, how much?

Hold on a minute!

Is the car a W115 or a W123?

What I'm really asking is, are the glowplugs series-type or
parallel-type? The easiest way to tell which type is by looking at
the side of the engine. Series plugs have zig-zag "toaster wire"
between each glow plug. Parallel-type does not.

If you are referring to series style glow plugs,

! DO NOT CONNECT ONE TO A 12V BATTERY CHARGER OR BATTERY

If you do, it will almost instantly burnout! Each series glow plug
is only rated for a couple volts. Testing with 12 V will destroy
them.

I don't have a good way to test series plugs - partly 'cause on the
only car I had that used them I rewired and installed parallel
plugs.

I suppose you could use a headlight as a current limiter and
measure the voltage drop across the glow plug...

If I'm misunderstanding your comment about the glowplug relay being
under the dash and it really does have parallel glow plugs, then I
would just modify the test procedure I mentioned before. If at all
possible/practical, use the ammeter between the glowplug supply and
individual glowplug wires. If working under the dash is difficult,
or it's not practical to separate the glow plug leads to test them
one at a time, you could disconnect the wire at the glow plug and
test there. This tests the plug - but not the rest of the system.

By the way, what is meant by "i have done the WSM tests"?

a large man, a musician in bonnie raitt's band it seems, when bonnie comes
on the bus, visibly upset over some stalker, i believe his name was
"jeff." now given this situation, the best answer would be along the lines
of "well, you just sit down here, miss raitt, i'll make sure you have no
more trouble with this 'jeff' fellow tonight" i had to, in the best
tradition of "pull my finger", utter something along the lines of "geez,
man, your mom is really freaky deaky, wow" as i knew it would get a laugh
from this fellow and who can resist such a thing?

i imagine most of you will find this post mad or at least unclear, but i

heats up - if I use my Battery charger won't I cover that
hot/cold problem?

Yes - but all you will be able to tell is if it glows. I think
it's a lot easier to test it still in the engine.

I attached 12 AWG wire leads to an old automotive dash style
ammeter that reads -30 0 +30 Amps.

To use it, I pop the top off of the glow relay and unplug the
connector for the glow plugs. There is a contact for each glow plug
in this connector. I clip one meter lead to the fused side of the
big, screw-in fuse and then touch each glowplug contact, one at a
time. The socket has pin numbers molded into it, and these numbers
correspond to the cylinder number.

This method tests the supply 12V, the wire, and the plug. When
cold, a good plug draws about 20A (Well, on my meter it point
to the mark for 20 amps. I have not calibrated or tested the
accuracy of that meter...) It will drop back to about 15A
after 8-10 seconds.

Once the one wire is connected to the fuse, DO NOT LET THE
OTHER WIRE TOUCH CHASSIS GROUND!!! Or the big fuse will blow
and possibly so will your ammeter. :)

If the plug is bad, the current will usually be less. If it is
shorted it will be much more.

If the wire or connectors are in poor shape, the current will
be less.

If the supply voltage is low, the current will be less.

I have to say that my car was just not the same without the star. I missed

On the other hand, my Suburban had a hood ornament that I really disliked.
I had the vehicle painted when it got old and needed some rejuvination and
one of the things I had the shop do was remove the hood ornament and weld

I have to say that my car was just not the same without the star. I
missed it.

On the other hand, my Suburban had a hood ornament that I really disliked.
I had the vehicle painted when it got old and needed some rejuvination
and one of the things I had the shop do was remove the hood ornament and
weld the hole shut.

So, Kaleb, do you have a W123 hood star? If so, how much?

Should be able to get one through Gary.
I got one through Rusty a few years back when some lowlife jerk

Buy a new S and all that will be taken care of for you.

I even read of the heresy of the new E being available with a poseur
star in the grill instead of where it belongs. Kinda like the
wankerfication of the Jaguar with the little growling kitty face instead
of the leaper. Wankers all.

Re: [MBZ] Hood Stars and Ice

2013-11-26 Thread Richard Hattaway
The stars are unique... the only hood ornament that, in the correct atmospheric
conditions, will condense water on your windshield as you drive down the road.
IE, no rain, but heavy humidity, cool, etc.  You'll get a big cloud of water in
the center of the windshield.

I promised myself that if it ever took the shape of a star I would take a
picture of it.  Never did, however.  Guess I didn't get the right conditions..

IIRC, you could buy a new one for less than $20 ten years ago.
Now it seems the W124 star has replaced it.

Re: [MBZ] dan gordon will be pleased to wear

2013-11-26 Thread G Mann
That poor hat in the link is so pristine it hardly looks worn. It has no
character. I would have to wear it at night or turn in my man card. No way
could I be seen in public with it on. Show up at a roundup with that on
and every real wrangler would know you were a sissy city slicker dandy
boy. Besides, you would have to stand for all the drinks for the real
cowboys.

Required components for a "real " hat. Sweat stain at the head band at
least 2 inches into the crown [sweat must be mixed with dirt as evidence of
"realness"]. Stomp marks from more than one animal where you lost the hat
but not the fight to control it.. The oral provenance of a mixture of
sweat, more sweat, animal sweat, swamp mud, blood...[some animal, some
human, some your own] , smoke from camp fires and outdoor cooking smells.
This "man perfume" says you and the hat are one, have been for decades, and
upon pain of death can not be separated. Extra points for a bullet hole or
two and a good story about how you threw the hat over a poisonous snake
then shot it while laying sleeping on the ground... near the open
campfire... before dawn... and saved the sheila...

It's not a hat.. it's a bloody crown.. cause you are king of your kingdom..
own it.. hahaha.

That's the new variety of red light cam.
When it sees you accelerating on red, it blows a big stop strip in front of you.
Notice the camera car started slowing down when the light turned yellow, and the
crash car was behind the camera car at the time.
