Re: [MBZ] Going Asian
Valrico is not even close to Central Florida, which has a different climate and where most of the agriculture is either citrus or cattle ranching. In our area it is mostly strawberries and tomatoes. You start getting into citrus out by Lakeland, which is a good 30-40 miles from me. Ruskin, which is immediately south of us, is one of the largest tomato producing areas in the nation. Immediately east of us is Plant City, the center of strawberry (and some blueberry) production in the U.S. Plant City's economy is centered around the strawberry business, and nearly every tillable acre in the area is used to grow them. There were the occasional citrus groves, but they are long gone. The climate in the Tampa area is temperate enough that citrus does not grow well here, at least not as well as it does in Central Florida, where the summers are hotter and the rains more consistent. It also tends to get colder here in the winter, if you want to call it that. I am much closer to Tampa than Lakeland. I suspect you're basing your observations on interstate exits, which, if traveling I-4 from Tampa to Orlando, would have you believe that Lakeland is the next stop east once you leave Tampa proper. And there is still a lot of open space in our area. Just a few hundred yards from my house is a horse ranch that covers about 30 acres, and just east of that is another small ranch of 26 acres. 4-5 miles south of me a good friend owns a 400 acre cattle ranch. There is a fair amount of development, but there are still a lot of wide open spaces, too. Going south of me towards Ruskin and Parrish the land is almost completely agricultural. [MBZ] 617 Glow Plugs and More
Guys, Thanks for the previous clarification on the glow plugs for the 617 engine. Yesterday was warm here in the Atlanta area so I replaced my glow plugs (80 300SD) with the Beru regular tips that I had. Removed the old Beru which were the tapered tip. Old plugs looked ok with no carbon build up, reamed the plug hole with a stiff wire brush (gun cleaner), not much there, changed both filters, re-primed system, and NOTHING. It still just cranks the same and won't start. It cranks slow which now makes me think the starter has gotten too weak to crank fast enough. The battery is only about 3 months old (Bosch group 49) and seems ok. I've checked the relay fuse, ok. I've checked all wiring to glow plugs, looks ok. Fuel in pre-filter looks nice and clean. Can you guys think of anything else I might check? I'm not a DIY guy so I don't have electrical test gauges, etc. I just hate to pay a tow bill to my Indie just to have him laugh and tell me it's something simple I overlooked. Now, I could tow it to start it because I've done that before (35 mph, 2nd gear, starts right up if battery dead), but the tranny is old and I don't want to stress it. Thanks for any suggestions. Agreed, you need to check it see if you're getting power at the plugs from the relay. Does the light on the dash come on? It's also possible for the GP relay fuse to look ok, but actually have a small crack that's not immediately visible. So remove it and inspect carefully. [MBZ] 617 Glow Plugs and More
Jaime, etc., Because of the slow cranking, I'm starting to lean away from the glow system. The relay fuse did look good when I checked it as well as the wiring contacts inside the box. Are there any connections I'm not seeing that could cause slow cranking? I just had the alternator replaced about 2-3 months ago because it killed the old battery and put in a new battery as well. It was starting ok, then now it won't. I guess the starter or solenoid could have just gotten tired also, or there could be a wire somewhere not providing a good solid connection. I'll try to get under it again and look at the starter connections later this afternoon if the rain holds off. Thanks guys, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] 617 Glow Plugs and More
It sure can. One day my 82 SD wouldn't start. The GP fuse looked good. But when I loosened one of the screws that holds the fuse, half of the fuse fell out. It was cracked totally through at the bend but that was not visible with the fuse installed. You need loosen one of the screws to check that fuse (and do that before you kill the battery by extended cranking). As an editorial comment, troubleshooting electrical stuff without a meter is like being blind and deaf. -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Jaime Kopchinski It's also possible for the GP relay fuse to look ok, but actually have a small crack that's not immediately visible. Thanks, Gerry ___ Hi Fred, I have regular Malwarebytes and AVG which turned up nothing, but a local newspaper columnist who is usually right about computer problems says that some rootkit viruses are undetectable and that their presence has to be detected by what they do to your software such as blocking the use of email clients, CD uploads and downloads, and several other functions. Microsoft addressed this problem by creating Win Defender Offline. Of course, there may be no virus and the 2006 cheap laptop may be dying. If I could figure out some way to put WInXP on a Win7 laptop, that would solve the problem. WinXP is simple compared to Microsofts and Apples later programs. I'm interested in what people write in emails; not in having to fiddle around with software. It's enough to drive me to Damn Small Linux (DSL). (grin) (End of rant.) Or a dying starter. When they get old, the resistance goes high in the winding and they draw amazing amounts of current without turning fast enough. Normal draw is around 900 amps. Bad starter will draw 2000 and still not turn fast enough to start the engine. Minimum engine speed is 100 rpm, if it appears to be turning slowly you have a bad starter or a discharged battery. Re: [MBZ] 617 Glow Plugs and More
First thing to check is the ground cable on the battery. Remove the battery end and clean it up with a wire brush. Also clean up the terminal on the battery. Then disconnect the other end of the ground cable where it connects to the chassis. Clean both the chassis and the terminal on the end of the cable with sand paper or whatever you have until its shiny. Also inspect the cable itself. Any breaks in the insulation, bulging, or visible corrosion might indicate a bad cable. This alone might make a big difference. You can also check both ends of the ground strap to the engine... I forget where it is on a 300SD, but this will be a dirtier and more difficult job. How slow are we talking about here regarding the cranking? I'm still thinking you have glow issues. A good cheap way to see if the glow plugs are doing anything is by watching the interior light. Turn on the light, then switch the key to the accessory position. Watch the light carefully and switch the key to on to star the glow plugs. The light should dim somewhat. If it doesn't, your glow plugs aren't working. Did you get a volt meter yet? This one looks super cheap and reasonably effective: http://www.amazon.com/INNOVA-3300-Hands-free-Digital-Multimeter/dp/B001O1X65A/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8qid=1386293969sr=8-4keywords=voltmeter Jaime On Thu, Dec 5, 2013 at 12:31 PM, roger...@comcast.net wrote: Jaime, etc., Because of the slow cranking, I'm starting to lean away from the glow system. [MBZ] happy hunting
#1 boy's w140 is having minor issues. Fan clutch may be messed up. Lots of rattles and clanks from that area. Standard door lock vac failure, radio dead, biodegraded wire harness. As luck would have it, a local scrap yard that also operates a PnP got a new w140 in. So, I had #1 boy drive me up there and we spent a few hours scouring it. I was really there attempting to snag a SLC instrument cluster, but the steering wheel was frozen hard. Anyway, we got all the parts he needed and a few more that could be useful. Had it not been so cold out, we might have made off with more. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
