Had no real trouble driving 55-60 on the freeway in the S210 4matic, but marveled at the number of fwd Pontiacs (mostly Grand Ams and G6s) flying by at 70+. Could sort of see two strips of concrete in the right lane most of the way, the longer I drove the more pronounced the ridges between the lanes got, until changing lanes to pass made me quite nervous. Used my alias email account to make an inquiry on an R129 at a dealer down in Sarasota. Nice car, good history, low miles, reasonable price. I asked about dealer fees and if I could have a PPI done at MB of Sarasota. Our fees are 6% Taxes, Tag Fee and $599 Dealer Fee. You are welcome to take the Mercedes to have an Inspection before your purchase but keep in mind as you know they are in business to make money so they will suggest that you do much more than you have to do. Hmm. So you're not? My reply: Thanks for the offer, Peter, but in my opinion anyone who buys a used car without a pre-purchase inspection is a fool, as are those who pay dealer fees. I'll continue to look elsewhere. Good luck with the sale. Now he gets conciliatory: I would like for you to have the vehicle inspected by your mechanic and unfortunately all dealers have a dealer fee. Please reconsider and I will work with you on the price to overcome the dealer fee. Allow me to earn your business, Asshat. reminds me why I hate dealers. No it is not greed in particular, it is just that hospitals (or ERs specifically) are just really poorly operated and managed. Not to say I told you so, but the Reagan Revolution was only a revolution in the same way the engine rotation is a revolution -- the whole idea was to undo the banking regulation and tax system that had protected us from market and banking collapses that happened every couple years before the 1911 Federal Reserve creation and Anti--Trust laws. Obvious then, obvious now, and unregulated capitalism (really unbridled speculation) breeds depressions and currency collapse like cold fronts breed storms. Re: [MBZ] OT: FYI - Oz gun laws and the US
A little perspective: There are about 30K gun deaths annually in the US, roughly the same as the number of automobile deaths. But about 20K of these gun deaths are suicides. So roughly 10K of the annual gun deaths are accidents or unjustified homicides. Source: http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/united-states http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motor_vehicle_deaths_in_U.S._by_year To put all that in context, there are about 200K deaths from medical errors in the US annually. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_malpractice Despite greater lethality, almost nobody argues to outlaw cars or doctors. Why? Because they see value in cars and doctors but not in guns. Why? Because (1) they believe what they see on TV; they have never personally been victims of violent crime and (2) they believe the political and economic freedom they experience daily in the US have always been that way and will always be that way, no matter what. This is in spite of the fact that most of the humans on this planet do not enjoy such freedom. The freedoms in the Bill of Rights were not selected at random. Giving in to piecemeal attacks on any these rights is a very slippery slope. Re: [MBZ] OT: Bilateral Knee Replacement
Thanks Larry. Sorry to hear of your tough experiences with knee replacement! Yes, PT is phasing out. I started with 3X per week and am down to 1X. I should be done with it in a couple of weeks. I have gone from a walker to a cane and actually don't need the cane for walking on level ground. I probably could drive, but SWMBO is my willing chauffeur. I put a thick foam pad on the passenger seat of the Crown Vic to make ingress and egress easier. My plan is to make the recovery easier if a little slower, as long as it does not inhibit complete recovery. My surgeon says that X-rays and all other indicators are good. There is still some pain but usually tolerable. I'll take Tylenol before bed if the pain is costing me sleep. I have a Schwinn 203 exercise bike that has given me good joint flexibility and will help restore my leg muscles. I am already seeing better function at some tasks than before the surgery. It looks so far like I have been lucky with this. I hope your knee replacements are still going well? Ihope the pain has subsided? By now I hope the PT will have helped build up your leg muscles some so walking and driving are becoming easier? My left knee replacement went a little less successfully - the 1st try lasted 53 weeks before it failed - they thought the joint failed so we did another - it failed at 55 weeks. It was damaged also as the xrays indicated and there was concern it would break completely so they removed it and put a antibiotic spacer in while we did tests to see if I was allergic to the adhesive - turned out i was and that's why the 1st 2 failed. about a week after getting the results of the allergy tests the doc found a press-fit joint which he installed immediately. But he wanted me to stay off of it for 6 weeks so the tissue, etc could grow over and onto the new joint. So a total of 8 weeks where I could not put weight on my left leg - it amazed me how quickly I lost muscle in both legs from lack of use! The PT was excellent and I was up and walking quickly but now, about 9 months after that ordeal I still get tired if I spend too much time walking or standing. I'm 63 so 5 years younger than you . FWIW. My prayers are with you - I hope your strength and stamina return quickly - it's no fun to depend on others for even simple tasks. By now, 2 months after your surgery I woud guess you are still receiving pt or possibly phasing out of it? Are you driving yet? that was always a milestone for me because of the freedom it allows. Sincere best wishes for a quick recovery! [MBZ] Took Mom car shopping
Thursday was adventure day for me. Mom was told the '90 Camry was too long in the tooth for the toyota boys to bother fixing, sell it to them for $500 and get a new, safe, car. That was Dad's car, and his birthday was 12/13, but he has been underground for more than six months. Hurt Mom's heart to have to let go of his car. She drives a corolla. It was making a noise. She dropped it at the dealer for service and I got to take her out to do test drives. Mother is 84. She is not sure if she it coming or going. She is getting a dog this weekend, but made sure the breeder would take it back if she passed prior to the dog. The new car is for hauling dog around, since she thinks her car would be too small. Really a back up car, for when her car is in the shop. But I scratch my head, since I am usually enlisted to ferry Mom to the service visits. She was afeared that the corolla was on its death bed, since it was making a noise and has 83k on the clock. She has been increasing her budget over the past three weeks from $7k to 20K, and going from a used car to looking at new. Then she gets concerned that she will be pushing up daisies before the end of the 72 month term. New? Used? Lots of cash? Finance? Trade her car? Get rid of all old cars and just use the new one? Is it too small to drive 700 miles to Montana? COME ON! Like I will allow her to drive to see my sister? Not on her life. She lost her own house keys in a five minute exchange with me a few months ago when I gave her back the keys to the Camry. I would chauffeur her in the S430 instead of a rattle trap japanese car on a ten hour trip. Anyway, the first dealer was Hyundai with an Elantra hatchback. Those are some real ricer cars now. All made for the tuner market to put body kits, neon, wings, and rubber band wheels. And what is the deal with putting the window sill at shoulder height? The new compact cars are all egg shaped with horrid visibility. Mom has neck issues and can not swivel her head enough to see a dang thing out the windows. From the exterior it looked like there was a cantaloupe resting at sill level. At least the sales guy was nice and did not pressure her to buy right that moment. He knew he had the car she needed, but Mom was not so sure. Next stop was back to the toyota folks, as they had called mid test drive to let her know the noise was a clogged catastrophic converter. If you drive all of five miles a day in little trips, there is no way the thing can do its job. Give us $159 to fix it now. She decided not just yet. We did look at the Scions. Another ovoid car. Mom hates black interior. All small cars come in black interior. No sight lines. Buckboard seats. Aviation control panels with flashing lights and too many buttons/levers/ switches. The used Honda Fit was sat in, but not started. We left without a test drive. When she got back into her own car, she was happy as a clam. I figured as much. Next visit was to see the Subaru dealer. Dropped my car off at her house and we went in her car. Better to compare what she is currently driving, instead of the dissonance of crawling into a tinfoil and lint built jalopy, from a fine German engineered car. The Subaru rode better, but was the same black and nasty with poor visibility and hard seats. The sales gal pulled all the classic tricks, from snagging the paper work out of the Corolla, to taking moms keys, and being pushy for details and filling out the sales forms. I was less than amused, so told mother that since the car is for hauling a new dog, she should really hold off until said puppy arrived and she was certain she was going to keep it. That did not go down well with the Subaru gal. Got Mom home and pointed out that her car is a fine car and should be able to transport a pooch with no troubles. Get the puppy protecting device at the dealer for $100, then buy a doggy seat belt harness, so the god is well secured and not able to bounce around, slobbering on the driver. Mother seems to think the dog will be quite large. It is a setter and looks a bit small to my eye. Then again, the last setter of that breed we owned was good sized to me. But I was all of nine years old the last time I saw that pooch. As an adult, the dogs are smaller. I shared my adventure with a neighbor over coffee while decorating holiday cookies. His advice was to get her ensconced in a Mercedes. Comfort, visibility, safety, and large enough for a setter to hang out in the back seat. clay ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Fwd: FYI - sensible Oz gun laws
I take mild offence at your suggestion that our gun laws are nanny state. Sure we have a ship load of nanny rules but the gun ones are pretty sensible. I am not going to get into an argument about it, as the article pretty much sums up my feelings. Anyway Klebby better email that fella selling the panzer 140 and ask if the gun compartments will fit a desert eagle. I was less than amused I would have been less than amused, too. And been a little pushy myself. How did she get Mom's keys? My last dealings with a car person were when I visited a Japanese-import dealer in Santa Fe because they had sent us a flier about a contest they had. The guy wanted to ask me about my car situation before going on to the contest. I told him I was driving a '95 Mercedes E320. He said that would need repairs. I said, Not too much. He then said, But it does get expensive when it does need repairs. I said I did my own work and that I had just replaced the water pump mounted on the side of the block and the serpentine belt idler. He understood he wasn't going to get a sale out of me and took me over to the contest area. That was a rip-off, too. The 89-91 Toyota Camry was the most stolen car in the USA for about a decade. They are dead reliable and 300k miles out of them is normal. They are a soul-less appliance, but a good appliance. Some dealer mechanic is probably driving it. She drives a corolla. What year? How many miles? If she is 84 she has maybe 10-15 more years of driving left, tops. Probably should just keep the Corolla. Especially since she is familiar with it and comfortable driving it. Rick My two cents.
